Roger Krick

Roger Krick, 52, of Westbrook died Nov. 5, 2001, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Sioux Falls, S.D.
A memorial service will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m., at Grace Lutheran Church in Westbrook with Rev. Roy Williams officiating.

Special music will be provided by Deloris Winter, organist; and Eunice Christensen, soloist.
Honorary pallbearers will be Rodney Boeck, Jerry Steen, Dean Winter, Don Paplow and Al Pearson.
Interment with military rites provided by the Westbrook VFW and Westbrook American Legion will be at Westbrook Cemetery in Westbrook.

Visitation will be held tonight (Wednesday) from 5 to 8 p.m., with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service, at Westbrook Funeral Home in Westbrook.
Roger Duane Krick was born July 6, 1949, to Roy and Elsie (Heeren) Krick in Slayton. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Westbrook.

Roger graduated from Westbrook High School in 1968. In 1970, he entered the U.S. Army and served in the Vietnam War from 1970 to 1973, spending his tour of duty in the Vietnam War where he received a Purple Heart. Following his military duty, he returned to the Westbrook area.

In 1975, Roger married Connie Clark at First Lutheran Church in Dundee. The couple settled in Westbrook and, in 1976, Roger was confirmed into the Lutheran faith at Grace Lutheran Church in Westbrook.
He was self-employed throughout much of his life, working as a farmer, driving truck and working on road construction crews.

In 1990, Roger and Connie moved to their country acreage where Roger enjoyed watching finches and blue birds. He also enjoyed trips into Westbrook to play cards and, in earlier years, enjoyed hunting, fishing and dancing.

Survivors include his wife, Connie of Westbrook; three children, Heather of Chanhassen, and Heath and Dustin of Westbrook; his siblings, Connie (Gary) Messer of Coon Rapids, Dennis Krick of Westbrook, Carolyn Krick of Minneapolis, Nancy (Rodney) Boeck of Westbrook, Janell (Jerry) Hospital of Fairfax, Va., Marcia (Steve) Reed of Lino Lakes, and Karen Krick of Mankato.

Helen Hardies

Helen Hardies, 97, of Windom died Nov. 4, 2001, at Sogge Good Samaritan Community in Windom.
Services will be held today (Wednesday) at 11 a.m., at Anderson-Schmidt Funeral Home in Windom with Father Andrew Olsem officiating.

Interment will be at Lakeview Cemetery in Windom.
Helen M. Wattawa was born July 28, 1904, to John and Anna (Ployhardt) Wattawa in Rock Valley, Iowa. Her family moved to the Pipestone area and settled near Woodstock, where she attended school.

In 1939, Helen married William Hardies in Pipestone. The couple lived in Pipestone until 1947, when they moved to Windom where William was employed by the Peter J. Schweitzer Co.

Helen cared for their family of three children.
After William died in 1987, Helen continued to make her home in Windom. She moved to Sogge Good Samaritan Community in 1993.

Helen enjoyed baby-sitting in her home as well as cooking, canning and gardening. She also was skilled in many forms of needle work, crocheting and lace work.
In addition to her husband William, Helen was preceded in death by her son, Richard Hardies; a daughter, Theresa Messenbrink; and a sister, Blanche Kieffer.

Survivors include her daughter, Judy Bunde of Sioux Falls, S.D.; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Lavern Crispin

Lavern Crispin, 78, of Windom died Aug. 17, 2002, at Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne.

Services were held Thursday at Anderson-Schmidt-LaCanne Funeral Home in Windom with Rev. Stephen Norby officiating.

Casketbearers were Mark Crispin, Harold Crispin, William Crispin Jr., Micah Crispin, Steve Hogen and Howard Haugen.

Interment with military honors provided by American Legion Post 206 of Windom was at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Windom.

Lavern C. Crispin was born July 6, 1924, to Walter and Alma (Spintig) Crispin in Heron Lake. He received his education at the Oak Grove Country School and later in Windom schools.

In 1944, Lavern enlisted in the U.S. Army at Fort Snelling.
He served in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II, where he was injured during combat and received the Purple Heart Award.

In 1946, Lavern was honorably discharged and returned to the Windom area where he farmed until his health forced him to retire.

He was preceded in death by five brothers, Kenneth, Leland, William Sr., Robert and Cecil Crispin; and one sister, Thelma.

Survivors include his sisters-in-law, Sophie Crispin and Jeanette Crispin, both of Windom.

Herman Vossen

Herman Vossen, 83, of Windom died April 29, 2001, at Windom Area Hospital.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Windom with Father Andrew Olsem officiating.

Interment will follow at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Cemetery in Windom.

Visitation will be held at the church tonight (Wednesday) from 3 to 9 p.m., with a scripture service at 7:30 p.m., followed by a Knights of Columbus Rosary. Visitation will continue Thursday at the church from 9:30 to 11 a.m.

Anderson-Schmidt Funeral Home of Windom is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Herman Joseph Vossen was born May 2, 1917, to John and Kathrine (Statz) Vossen in Watkins. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Watkins and began receiving his education in Watkins schools.

In 1940, Herman married Dorothy Bulfer.

Herman’s career began in 1939, when he worked for six months as a Pope County 4-H leader, then for three months with the Soil Conservation Service in Houston.

He graduated from the College of Agriculture in 1941 and acced a position as assistant county agent in Freeborn County. Two years later, he became Cottonwood County extension agent, holding that position for 25 years.

During that quarter century, Herman received his MS degree and also attained the rank of professor at the University of Minnesota.

In 1966, he accepted a position as livestock specialist for the University of Minnesota project in Chile. After his return to Minnesota in 1968, Herman became Area Extension Livestock Specialist at the Southwest Experiment Station in Lamberton.

He retired in 1980 and has been an active volunteer since then.

Since 1991, Herman has been fighting cancer.

Herman was most known for his contributions to the Cottonwood County Fair. In fact, he was known to many as “Mr. County Fair,” and also had one of the fairground’s buildings named the Herman Vossen Exhibit Building.

In 1943, he began reorganizing and developing the Cottonwood County Fair. With the aid of county farmers and businessmen, he helped develop the fair into one of the top county fair’s in Minnesota. Herman served as the fair’s director and secretary manager.

In addition to the fair, Herman also was elected Executive Vice President of the Minnesota Beef Cattle Improvement Assn. (MBCIA) He also was a volunteer for the University of Minnesota’s Mediation Program.

Herman was also a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Windom, serving on the church council and as chairman of the administration and finance committee.

Over the years, Herman has been honored with many awards. He has been honored by state beef and pork groups, various 4-H and FFA groups and for soil conservation.

He also received the Cottonwood County 4-H Friend of 4-H award in 1985 and inducted into the Minnesota Livestock Hall of Fame and honored on WCCO as Today’s Good Neighbor in 1986.

He was also named a Mayor’s Medal of Honor winner by Windom Mayor John Galle in 1998 and was awarded the Rural Stewardship Award by the Windom Chamber of Commerce.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jean Ellison; and two brothers, Frank and Eugene Vossen.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of Windom; six children, John Vossen of Plymouth; Mary Vossen of Santa Rosa, Calif.; Pat Vossen of Forestville, Calif.; Joseph (Beth) Vossen of Prescott, Wis.; Dr. Dennis (Debbie) Vossen of Forestville, Calif.; and Paul (Marisa) Vossen of Sebastopol, Calif.; seven grandchildren; a son-in-law, Maurice Ellison of Minneapolis; one sister, Margaret Vincent of White Bear Lake; and four brothers, Leo (Lucille) Vossen of Watkins, Richard (Marie) Vossen of Hutchinson, Bernard (Teresa) Vossen of Waite Park and Elmer (Julia) Vossen of Cold Spring.

Kyle Licklider

Kyle Licklider, 15, of rural Renville, grandson of Kermit and Gladys Lillegaard of Windom, died April 29, 2001, at North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale.

Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m., at First Lutheran Church in Renville with Rev. Lee Hallstrom officiating.

Special music will be provided by Jeremy Haug, organist and pianist.

Pallbearers will be Jeremy Schmidt, Max Abbas, Chad Bryan, Cory Ashburn, Andy Dikken, Shane Fitzner, Kyle Thompson and Adam Roschild.

Honorary pallbearers will be Corey Lang, Brent Clemenson, Sonja Cleary, Carrie Enesvedt, Erin Feldman, Steph Dahl, JoEllen Johnson, Jenny Zieske, Kayla Maurice, Katie Meyen, Katie Wertish, Brittney Owen, Lindsay Zaske, Stephanie Stromberg, Nicole Rath, Nikki Lang, Chris McClurg, Chris Novotny, Chris Potter, Matt Wulf, Mitch Peterson and Vanessa Slagter.

Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery in Renville.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m., tonight (Wednesday), with a 6:30 p.m. prayer service, at First Lutheran Church in Renville. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.

Dirks-Blem Funeral Service in Renville is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Kyle Daniel Licklider was born Aug. 31, 1985, to Daniel and Sandra (Lillegaard) Licklider in Olivia. He was baptized at First Lutheran Church. He grew up in rural Renville and attended Renville County West Public Schools.

He was presently a freshman at Renville County West and participated in pep band and choir.

Kyle was also a member of First Lutheran Church and its senior league.

His hobbies included riding snowmobile, dirt biking, boating, wakeboarding, tubing water-skiing, playing drums and fixing anything mechanical. He also enjoyed music, spending time with friends and his dog, “Nash”.

Survivors include his parents, Dan and Sandie Lillegaard of Renville; two sisters, Mandy (fiance Kristoff Basemann of St. Paul) Licklider of Indian Hills, Colo.; and Megan Licklider of Renville; his Norwegian brother, Eivind Ullevoldsaeter of Nittedal, Norway; grandparents Kermit and Gladys Lillegaard of Windom and U.T. “Tom” and Violet Licklider of Renville; and a number of aunts, uncles and cousins, including Mark (Cheryl) Lillegaard and their daughters, Jessica and Brandi, of Windom.

Alberta Kleven

Alberta Kleven, 91, of Westbrook died April 23, 2001, at her home in Westbrook.

Services were held Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Westbrook with Rev. William Klavetter officiating.

Special music was provided by Tasha Nelson, organist; and Kaye Adelmann, soloist.

Pallbearers were Harold Olson, Dick Anderson, Bob Villa, Eric Villa, Steve Erickson and Roger Erickson.

Interment was at Westbrook Cemetery in Westbrook.

Westbrook Funeral Home of Westbrook was in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Alberta Marie Anderson was born Sept. 8, 1909, to Albert and Lena (Gunderson) Anderson in Algona, Iowa. As a small child, she moved with her family to the Westbrook area.

She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Westbrook in 1923.

Alberta enjoyed sports and played on a women’s basketball team that played games in the school’s attic. She graduated from Westbrook High School.

In 1928, Alberta married Jens Kleven. The couple lived on the family farm until 1948 when they moved to a farm in Banner County, Neb.

In 1969, they retired and moved to Lake Minnewaska before returning to Westbrook in 1975.

Alberta was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and WELCA.
She also enjoyed cooking, making lefsa and watching sports.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jens in 1988, and three sisters, Ruth, Corrine and Sara.

Survivors include many nieces and nephews as well as sister-in-laws, Olga Erickson of Westbrook and Helen Kleven of Wheatland, N.Y.
