Willis “Scoop” E. Carlson
Services were held recently for Willis “Scoop” E. Carlson. He died Mon., Dec. 20, 1999 in Carlton. He was 89.

The former Proctor resident was born in Cloquet and graduated from its high school in 1928.

He worked in a CCC camp in northern Minnesota in the 1930’s. He attained a degree in business from Duluth Business College. He married his wife of 58 years, Carol in Proctor on Sept. 20, 1941, and moved to Cloquet. He served in the 357 Infantry, Medical Detachment, 90th Infantry Division, Air Corps Radio Squadron and 97th Fighter Squadron in Italy until 1945. He worked as a bookkeeper for several businesses in Cloquet. He then moved to Carlton in 1952 to join public service as Carlton County auditor for 23 years, retiring in 1975.

He was a former member of Carl Anderson American Legion Post 262, Moose Lodge 1274 and Eagles Aerie 1163, the Hebert-Kennedy VFW Post 3979 of Cloquet; and served as secretary and on the board of the Carlton Library. He was a life member of Nicholson-Sellgren VFW Post 2962 of Carlton.

He helped start the Carlton Senior Center, and was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church in Carlton.

He is survived by his wife, Carol; daughters Karen (Leon) Mills of Rogers, Ark., and Linda Newlon of Cloquet; grandchildren Jeffrey and Jonathan Brustad, Julieann (David) LaBelle, and Bethany and Jacob Newlon; a great-granddaughter, Amanda; and sisters Elsie (Earl) Anderson of Mineral, Va., and Agnes Jugasek of Proctor.

Full military rites were accorded. Spring interment will be in Hillside Cemetery, Carlton.

Irvin E. Hanson
Services were held last week for Canosia born Irvin E. Hanson who died Wed., Dec. 22, 1999 in Duluth. He was 78.

He was an Army veteran of World War II and saw action in Normandy, Northern France and Germany. He was in the service from May 1942 until he was wounded in July 1945, for which he received the Purple Heart.

He married Betty L. Childs June 2, 1945, in Duluth. He was a light equipment operator for the city of Duluth Parks and Recreation Department, retiring in 1978.

He was a member of the former Highland Presbyterian Church and First Presbyterian Church. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans and American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, serving on the city and county employees local union board for many years.

Irvin is survived by his wife of 54 years, Betty; a daughter, Carol (Charles) Kniep of Duluth; a son, Gerald Hanson of Duluth; grandchildren Eric and Crystal Hanson of Duluth; a brother, Herbert (Arlene) Hanson of Mapleton, Minn.; a half-brother, Wesley (Verna) Hanson of Hermantown; a half-sister, Esther Ugstad of Hermantown; a stepsister, Helen Hanson of Duluth; and many nieces and nephews.

Entombment was in Sunrise Memorial Park.

Jo Ann Oppenneer
Jo Ann Oppenneer, who grew up in Proctor and attended its schools, passed away suddenly Wed., Dec. 15, 1999 in Yuma, Az. She was 64.

The Belmont, Mich. resident was born Nov. 28, 1935 in Duluth, the daughter of Rudolph and Gladys Johnson. She married Jerald Oppenneer Mar. 1955 in Proctor. They wintered in Yuma.

Survivors include her husband Jerald, sons Randal (Diane) of Grand Rapids and Daniel of Sand Lake, a daughter Heidi (David) Harper of Cedar Springs, her mother Gladys Johnson and brother Wayne (Shari) Johnson, both of Proctor, her mother-in-law Mae Oppenneer of Grand Rapids, brother-in-law Bernard Oppenneer of Belmont, six grandchildren, two nephews and one niece.

A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Memorials to the Memorial Garden Fund of Peace Lutheran Church in Sparta, Mi. or the charity of your choice would be appreciated.

James E. Bryant
James E. “Jim” Bryant, who was the voice of the Proctor Rails’ hockey team for a quarter century and along with his brother Ernie owned Bryant Garbage Service, lost his battle with cancer Sun. He died in a Duluth hospital at the age of 57.

Services are today, Thursday at 11 a.m. in Forbes United Methodist Church, 33 Grove St., Proctor. Pastors Steve Elder and Dan Richardson will officiate. Burial will be in Oneota Cemetery.

Jim was born Nov. 30, 1942, in Duluth to Clinton and Eileen Warnock Bryant. He had lived in Duluth and Proctor for most of his life, living the last 31 years in Proctor. He attended Barber College in Rock Island, Ill. and then worked as a barber in Brainerd and Duluth for five years. He then became co-owner in Bryant Garbage Service from 1970-1991. He worked for Thompson Spirit Valley Disposal and Waste Management until 1998. Jim served in the Minnesota Air National Guard. He was involved in Proctor Youth Hockey for many years and was Proctor High School hockey announcer for 25 years. He was a member of R.L.D.S., Jack Meade Gun Club and Proctor Moose Lodge No. 1302 for over 30 years. Jim married Susan A. Baker on Jan. 30, 1965 in Bethesda Lutheran Church, Carlton.

He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing golf with his sons. He will be sadly missed and always in the hearts of his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother Eileen, brother Ernie, and hunting dogs Misty and Ebony.

Survivors include his wife Sue, daughter Kelly (Jerry) Daveau of Cloquet and granddaughters Ashley, Courtnie, Shannon and Haleigh; sons Kristopher (Tara) Bryant of Duluth and unborn grandson James Hamilton, and Kerry (Lori) Bryant of Proctor and granddaughters Alyssa and Karlyn, father Clinton Bryant of Duluth, brother John (Joanne) Bryant of Proctor, and several nieces and nephews.

Burial will be in Oneota Cemetery. Memorials to St. Mary’s Hospice or Duluth Clinic Oncology would be appreciated.

Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Henry Horak
Henry Horak, who was a Pike Lake area resident most of his life, died Sat., Jan. 1, 2000 in Nopeming Nursing Home. He was 96.

He was a welder in the shipyards, was co-owner and founder of Arrowhead Sand & Gravel and Duluth Ready Mix; owned and founded Duluth Agrigats and owned Garfield Liquor Store until he retired.

He was preceded in death by his wife Violet (Ruth) Horak in 1986; a son Donald; grandsons Darren and Brian; his parents; a brother; and two sisters.

He is survived by sons David (Joanne) Horak of Cloquet and Rodney (Carol) Horak of Duluth; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Entombment was in Sunrise Memorial Park, Hermantown.

Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Nancy L. Smith
Dave Fulda, Jr. of Proctor is mourning the death of his mother, Nancy L. Smith. She succumbed to cancer Mon., Dec. 27, 1999 in a Duluth hospital. She was 64.

The lifelong Superior resident was born in Superior and graduated from the former Cathedral School. She worked for the National Bank of Commerce for 22 years and before that as a telephone operator for the former Wisconsin Telephone Co. She was a member of the Holy Assumption Catholic Church and was affiliated with the Fond du Lac Community Church. She married Brian “Mike” Smith in Michigan.

She is also survived by her husband Brian “Mike”, four other sons, a daughter, her mother, three stepsons, a stepdaughter, a brother, a sister and several nieces and nephews.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.

Genevieve G. Johnson
George Roland of Saginaw is saddened by the death of his sister, Genevieve G. Johnson. She died Sat., Jan. 1, 2000 in a Duluth hospice. She was 75.

She was born in Buhl and was a lifelong Hermantown resident.

She married Oliver Andrew Johnson on Aug. 15, 1942, in Duluth. She was a homemaker and a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and Christ Lutheran Church. She was a member of the Duluth Accordionaires auxiliary and served as vice president of the Esker Trail Cabin Owners Association.

She is also survived by two sons, three daughters, two other brothers, three sisters, an aunt, ten grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Burial was in Sunrise Memorial Park.

Thelma L. “Babe” Nelson
Nancy Olson of Proctor is mourning the death of her mother, Thelma L. “Babe” Nelson. She died Sun., Jan. 2, 2000 at the age of 88.

The Duluth resident is also survived by a son, six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Burial was in Graceland Cemetery.

Gene A. “Grandma Cookie” Jakubek Wood
Gerri Napoli of Proctor is saddened by the death of her mother Gene A. “Grandma Cookie” Jakubek Wood. She died Mon., Jan, 3, 2000 in her Duluth home. She was 73.

She was born in Hopkins, Minn. She worked as a secretary for St. Germain Paint Co. for 12 years. She also worked in housekeeping for St. Luke’s Hospital.

She is also survived by her son, seven grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

A gathering of friends will be held at 10 until the 11 a.m. memorial service Friday in Williams Lobermeier Funeral Home. The Rev. John Napoli officiating. Inurnment will be in Oneota Cemetery.

Myrtle Jane Elizabeth Thorburg Erickson
Lois Lennartson of Midway is saddened by the death of her sister, Myrtle Jane Elizabeth Thorburg Erickson. She died Dec. 20, 1999.

She was born in Duluth. She married Everett W. Erickson on June 13, 1943, in Midway, Minn. Everett died in 1993.

Jane was a homemaker and taught piano and was an elementary school music teacher in Reeds Springs. She moved to Fort Collins 15 years ago from Benkelmen, Neb.

Jane was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and was a church organist and piano accompanist. She was a member of Sarah Circle of Presbyterian Women, Aspen Club and the exercise group at Skyline Mobile Community. She loved attending her grandchildren’s athletic and musical events and playing cards and games.

Jane is also survived by one son Michael Erickson of Birmingham, Ala., four daughters Cathy Schelly of LaPorte, Janet Erickson of Birmingham, Debbie Poindexter of Overland Park, Kansas and Christine Piper of Littleton, two other sisters Lindus Lennartson of Duluth and Marian Wickland of Peoria, Ariz. and 16 grandchildren.
