Henry “Hank” Richard Stei
Henry “Hank” Richard Stein, who was born in Proctor, died Wed., Dec. 22, 1999. He was 76.

He was born Aug. 26, 1923 and served in the Navy in World War II. He worked over thirty years as regional sales manager for an electrical wholesaler. He worked 13 years before his retirement as the owner of an Insty Prints in Houston, Tx.

He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years Barbara J. Stein, children Diane and Jim Alm of Houston, Tx., Dr. Richard H. Stein of Jaffrey, N.H., Michael N. and Gina Stein of Santa Barbara, Ca., his grandchildren Scott and John Gruber of Houston, Tx. and Matthew and Emily Stein of Santa Barbara, Ca., and brother Walter and Merle Jean Stein of Osterville, Ma., sister-in-law Rose Stein of Proctor, Mn. and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held Dec. 28 at Lakewood United Methodist Church in Houston.

Aubin James Klassen
Aubin James Klassen, six-week-old son of Diane Anderson and Peter Klassen, died Fri., Jan. 7, 2000, in St. Mary’s Medical Center.

He is survived by his parents, grandparents Shelly Anderson and Allen Anderson, both of Saginaw, Edie (Nelson) Bonds of Florida and Perry (Brenda) Klassen of Duluth, great-grandparents Norma Nichols of Saginaw, James Nichols of Superior, Joanne Anderson of Saginaw, and Greta and John Klassen of Alborn, great-great-grandparents LaVerna Kubis of Carlton, Viola Linder of Duluth and Ilde Harder of Carlton, his godparents, a special cousin, and many special friends.

Interment was in Culver Cemetery.

Grace H. Kela
Grace H. Kela died Sat., Jan. 8, 2000, in St. Mary’s Hospice.

She was born and raised in Hermantown and attended the former Garfield and Proctor schools. She worked at Lake Haven Manor for 12 years.

She is survived by a son James W. (Jacquelyne) Carlson of Green Bay, a daughter Janice (Michael) Budge of Webster, Wis., a sister Ethel Witte of Cloquet, a brother Raymond Stebner of Hermantown, eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Interment was in Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Gertrude M. “Bunco” Russell
Gertrude M. “Bunco” Russell, who lived in Proctor and worked on the DM&IR Railway as a switch tender, died Tues., Jan. 4, 2000 in Hibbing. She was 97.

She was born in Finland. She was a graduate of Virginia High School and married Arthur R. Russell in Virginia.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Hibbing, was active in and treasurer for Vasa Lodge, a member of the Hobby Club at church, volunteered at the University Medical Center-Mesabi and was known as the “mitten lady” at church bazaars.

Gertrude is survived by daughters Lorraine (Richard) Davis of Las Vegas and Janet (Robert) Eck of Minneapolis, a son-in-law Raymond Lee of Hibbing, 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandson and two nieces.

Interment was in Hibbing Park Cemetery.

Ella B. Christen
Services were held last week for Ella B. Christen. She died Mon., Jan. 10, 2000, in Nopeming Nursing Home. She was 92.

The former Railview Apartment resident was born in Wrenshall and grew up there.

Ella was a charter member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wrenshall and Redeemer Lutheran Church in Duluth, the Ladies Guild, Railview Action Club, AARP and Senior Coalition, and was a volunteer at Railview Apartments.

She is survived by daughters Beatrice (Al) Bassi of Duluth and Della Hendrickson of Brainerd, sons Walter G. (Janet) of St. Cloud and Robert C. (Jackie) of Duluth, 12 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandson and nieces and nephews.

Burial was in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery in Wrenshall.

Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Randolph R. Bernu
A memorial service will be held today for Randolph R. Bernu of Pike Lake. He died Mon., Jan. 17, 2000, in Duluth. He was 85.

The Vaux Road resident was born in New York Mills, Minn. and was raised in Cherry. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran, having served during World War II. Randolph farmed on the old homestead in Cherry and also worked as a lumberman. In 1968, Randolph moved to the Pike Lake area. He was an avid flying enthusiast.

He is survived by his sister Carmen (the late Harold) Greene of Duluth, a nephew Douglas Greene of Duluth and a niece Shannon Gruber of Alamo, Calif.

The memorial service will be at 10 a.m. in Sunrise Memorial Park Mausoleum. Inurnment will be in Sunrise Mausoleum.

Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Pearl Helen Longtin
Pearl Helen Longtin, who was born in Proctor over a century ago, died Sun., Jan. 16, 2000, in Grand Rapids.

She was born on Oct. 27, 1899, and was raised in Coleraine. She married Joseph L. Longtin in 1922 and moved to Cloquet before settling in Grand Rapids.

She is survived by daughters Joyce Hodgson of Van Nuys, Calif., Roma “Puzzy” (Jesse) Riehle and Bonnie Mears, both of Grand Rapids and Polly Jetland of Plymouth, Minn., a son Dale (Pat) Longtin of Edina, Minn., a very special granddaughter Dewella “Dudy” Brough of Van Nuys, and 86 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A private family memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday in Rowe Funeral Home in Grand Rapids. Burial will be in Itasca-Calvary Cemetery, Grand Rapids.

Stanley Edward Whitney
Services will be held today for Stanley Edward Whitney of Proctor. He died Sat., Jan. 15, 2000, in a Duluth Hospice. He was 64.

Stanley was born in Duluth, graduated from Hermantown High School and was a longtime resident of Hermantown and Proctor. Stanley worked as a laborer.

He is survived by brothers Dale (Shirley) of Mount Morris, Mich. and Larry (Becky) of Hermantown, a sister Donna Johnson of Eau Claire, Wis. and nieces and nephews.

Service is at 1 p.m. today (Thurs.) in Bell Brothers Chapel. Burial will be in Union Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

J. Alfred “Al” Dillan
J. Alfred “Al” Dillan of Duluth and Proctor died Sat., Jan. 22, 2000 in Benedictine Health Center. He was 101.

He was born in Brainerd, Minn. and moved to Proctor in 1927 and lived there until he moved to Duluth in 1957. He was Director of Safety for the Duluth Missabe and Iron Range Railway Co., where he worked for 36-1/2 years and retired in 1963. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War I and was awarded the Victory Metal. Al graduated from Brainerd High School as Valedictorian and in 1922 graduated from University of Minnesota with honors earning a degree in Math and Social Sciences. Following college, he returned to Brainerd, where he served as director of the YMCA. On June 20, 1925, he married Dorothy Crossman and moved to Proctor where he served as Director of the Proctor YMCA. In the 1930’s, the Proctor YMCA changed to the Employees Association for DM&IR. He was a very active member of Forbes United Methodist Church where he served as choir director, superintendent of education and Sunday school teacher. Al later became active with Glen Avon Presbyterian Church. He was Past Master of Euclid Masonic Lodge #198, A.F. & A.M., a member of Scottish Rite-Valley of Duluth and was a 33 Degree Honorary Mason. He also belonged to the Aad Temple Shrine, Keystone Chapter #20 Royal Arch Mason, Duluth Consistory of Knights Templar, St. George Conclave and Red Cross of Constantine. He was also a former member and past commander of the Proctor American Legion, and Honorary member of the Legion of Honor-Order of DeMolay, past Patron of the Proctor Chapter Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the Euclid Chapter Order of the Eastern Star. Al was a member of the Norsmans Federation, Minnesota Alumni Association, and was founder and Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop #25 in Proctor. He was also Charter member and past President of the Proctor Masonic Club.

Al was a former President of the Proctor Credit Union, served 14 years as first chair of the Advisory Council of Unity-Order of DeMolay and for 12 years served as Chairman of the St. Louis County Selection Services Board No. 5.

Al was an original inductee of the Proctor Hall of Fame.

Survivors include his wife Dorothy, two sons J. Alfred, Jr. (Fran) Dillan of Poulsbo, Wash. and William (Kay) Dillan of Duluth, two daughters Dorothy Ann (Alan) Raun of Cumming, Iowa and Virginia (Ray) Wehde of Palm Desert, Calif., a sister Ruth Heinzel of Brainerd, 18 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren.

Burial was in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery. The family prefers memorials directed to the Dillan Scholarship Fund of the Greater Proctor Foundation.

Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Terrence Raycraft
Terrence Raycraft of Bay View is mourning the death of his mother, Alice G. Carlson. She died Sat., Jan. 22, 2000 in the Lake View Home. She was 88.

The Two Harbors resident was born there and graduated from its schools. She worked as a buyer in retail department stores, Scandinavian Cooperative in Two Harbors, Friemuth Department Store in Duluth and Johnson Department Store in Cloquet. She lived in Ely from 1970 until returning to Two Harbors in 1975. She was a member of the United Church in Two Harbors.

She is also survived by three stepsons, a stepdaughter and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Burial was in Lakeview Cemetery.

Jimmy Ray Carr
Services were held yesterday for Jimmy Ray Carr of Saginaw who died Sun., Jan. 23, 2000 in a Cloquet hospital. He was 38.

He was born in Troy, Ala. He married Susan Larson on Feb. 13, 1981, in Yakima, Wash. He worked as a carpenter for 18 years.

He is survived by his wife Susan, sons Kenny, Nathan and Joshua at home, his father James Carr of Pensacola, Fla., his mother Dorothy Creighton of Sumner, Wash., brothers Johnny (Evie) Carr of Seattle and Daniel (Karen) Carr of Puyallup, Wash., many nieces and nephews, and his faithful dog Maria.

Burial was in Maple Grove Cemetery, Cloquet.

Former Proctor Mayor Jimmie A. Amundson
Services were held last week for former Proctor Mayor Jimmie A. Amundson. He died Tues., Jan. 25, 2000 in Duluth. He was 86.

He was born in Wolf Creek, Wis. He retired as a conductor in 1967 from the DM&IR. He built numerous homes in the Proctor area. In 1982, he ran unopposed for mayor and served one term. He was a member of Moose Lodge 1302 in Proctor.

He is survived by his wife Shirley Amundson, sons Lowell (Jeanne) Amundson of Council Bluffs, Iowa and Jimmy (Ronnie) Amundson of Corning, Calif., a daughter Nancy (Nick) Royer of Racine, Wis., a stepson Steve (Arlene) Okstad of Proctor, stepdaughters Kathy (Bob) Hanson of International Falls, Diane (Tim) Zawistowski of Toledo, Ohio and Janice Erickson of Esko and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Rev. Jeffrey Holter officiated. Interment was in Oneota Cemetery.
