Ernest “Ernie” W. Maki
Debbie Tibbets of Pike Lake is mourning the death of her father, Ernest “Ernie” W. Maki. He died Tues., Jan. 25, 2000 in a Cloquet hospital. He was 68.
He was born in Cook. He attended school in Orr and later graduated from Cloquet High School. He married Bette Lehto on May 25, 1957.
Ernest worked for Cloquet Implement for 21 years and later for Boldt Construction until his retirement in 1995. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Hebert Kennedy VFW Post 3979, both of Cloquet. He was also a former board member of the Brevator town board.
He is also survived by his wife Bette of Cloquet, three sons, another daughter, ten grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and his special canine companion “Rusty”.
Burial was in Pine River Cemetery.
William E. Stebner
Irene Stebner and Kathy Cartwright of Proctor are mourning the death of their son and brother, respectively. William E. Stebner died Fri., Jan. 29, 2000 from injuries caused by an automobile accident. He was 48.
He was born in Duluth and had lived in the area. He worked for Standard Brick and Supply Co.
He is also survived by his two sons and five other sisters Gloria (Keith) Pearson of Esko, Marie Schilling of Esko, Nancy Campbell of Cloquet, and Jane Nelson and Dolly Andrews of Duluth.
Burial was in Sunrise Memorial Park.
Albert Thomas McGovern
Albert Thomas McGovern, who was a lifelong Proctor resident working on the DM&IR for 38 years and serving on the city council, died Sat., Feb. 5, 2000, in his Almac Drive home. He was 84.
He was born April 9, 1915, to Felix H. and Margaret (Valentine) McGovern. He married Alice Dorothy Archambeau on Nov. 27, 1937, in Duluth. He retired in 1975 as a conductor. He was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church, DM& IR union, Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen, and a former member of Proctor Moose 1302.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Dennis on Sept. 14, 1969, a granddaughter Teresa Rewald on April 4, 1994, great-grandsons Michael and Anthony Rewald, brothers Lawrence, George, Bernard and Earl, and a stepbrother Lawrence Dupras.
He is survived by his wife Alice, daughters Mary Lou Mosca of Milwaukee, Margaret “Peggy” Rewald of Proctor, Carol (Ted) Thompson, Dawn Strom and Patricia (Sam) Michelizzi, all of Duluth, sons Terrance (Cathie) and Thomas (Toni), both of Duluth and Gerald (Susan) of Gilbert, 32 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Entombment was in Sunrise Memorial Park Cemetery Mausoleum in Hermantown.

Roseanna B. Bush
Marjorie Lind of Proctor and Keith Bush of Pike Lake are mourning the death of their mother Roseanna B. Bush. She died Mon., Jan. 31, 2000, in a Duluth hospital at the age of 84.
She had been a resident of Nopeming Nursing Home for the past year. She was born in Groningen, Minn. She was a longtime Duluth resident. She was a 1933 graduate of Sandstone High School and a homemaker. She was a member of Elim Lutheran Church for more than 50 years.
She is also survived by two other sons, Blaine of Huntington Beach, CA. and Curtis of Brevator, two other daughters, Marilyn Reno and Betsy Amendola both of Livingston, TX, a brother, Robert Nelson of Finlayson; a sister, Alice Bagge of Askov; 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Burial was in Oneota Cemetery. Pastor Jim K. Hagen officiated.

Jack Ryan Swanson
Jack Ryan Swanson, son of Nicole Marie and Matthew Charles Swanson, was stillborn on Jan. 25, 2000, at St. Mary’s Medical Center.
He was preceded in death by his maternal great-grandparents Herbert and Gunvor Anderson and paternal great-grandparents Paul and Marvil Swanson and Charlotte Roning.
Survivors include his parents Matthew and Nicole Swanson and brother Ian David of Midway Township, maternal grandparents Chris and David Brenna of Proctor, paternal grandparents Bill and Deneise Swanson of Big Fork, Mn., maternal great-grandparents Marvin and Joyce Brenna of Proctor, paternal great-grandfather Dennis Roning, Hills, Minn. and four uncles.
Burial was in Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.
Mary S. Mitchell
Jerry Mitchell of Proctor is mourning the death of his mother, Mary S. Mitchell. She died Wed., Jan. 26, 2000 in Duluth. She was 90.
The longtime West Duluth resident was born in Duluth. She had attended Irving School.
She was a member of St. James Catholic Church, Catholic Order of Foresters, Daughters of Isabella, Women of the Moose Chapter 580 and American Legion Post Home.
She is survived by three other sons, a foster daughter, two brothers, three sisters, 12 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Burial was in Oneota Cemetery.
Ruth Ann Haugland
Services were held earlier this week for Ruth Ann Haugland. She died Thurs., Feb. 3, 2000, in Duluth at the age of 75.
She was born in Minneapolis, Mn.
A Proctor and Duluth area resident all of her life, she was a Navy Wave veteran of WW II. She was a homemaker and attended Forbes Memorial Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her first husband Paul Francis Sullivan, her parents. Her brother Peter Stafford and sisters Margaret Condon and Doris Wilmot.
Survivors include her husband of 39 years Larry Haugland, daughter Peggy (Clarence) Douville of Wrenshall, sons Timothy (Sue) Sullivan of Stillwater, Paul (June) Sullivan of Eveleth, Peter (Claudia) Sullivan of Proctor, Patrick (Peggy) Sullivan of Cromwell, Larry Haugland, Jr. of Saginaw, brother David Marklund of Proctor, grandchildren Steven, Ryan, Kimberly, Jeffrey, Jamie, Nicole, Maria, Christina, and several nieces and nephews.

Sadie A. Purtilo
Diane Fremling is mourning the death of her mother, Sadie A. Purtilo. She died Sat., Jan. 29, 2000, at the age of 88.
Sadie is also survived by her sister, her son, four grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
Marshall “Mike” G. Zebott
Services were held last week for Marshall “Mike” G. Zebott who died Wed. Feb. 9, 2000 in his Third Street home. He was 84.
He was born in Proctor on Feb. 15, 1915, to Herman and Emma (Larson) Zebott. He was a 1933 Proctor High School graduate and attended Duluth Business College for two years. He was a seaman first class with the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II. On July 10, 1943, he married Doris Eklund in Duluth and together they raised two children. He was employed with Duluth Missabe and Iron Range Railway for 38 years as a machinist helper, retiring in 1975. He was an avid bowler and golfer.
He was a member of the I.A. of M. Union for over 50 years and a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Proctor.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Harold Zebott and a sister Eva Naslund.
He is survived by his wife Doris, a son Richard of Buhl, a daughter Diane (Dennis) Granley of Proctor, grandchildren Denise, Mike, Wendy, Mark and Michelle, a great-granddaughter Tasha and a niece Karen.
A service was held Saturday in Immanuel Lutheran Church, Proctor. The Rev. Mark A. Osthus officiated.
Burial was in Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.
Herman Robert Schafer, Robert H. “Bob” Schafer of Proctor is mourning the death of his father Herman Robert Schafer. He died Tues., Feb. 1, 2000 in a Duluth hospital. He was 90.
Herman was born in Philadelphia and lived in Duluth for 70 years. He retired as custodial superintendent at the St. Louis County Courthouse in 1976.
Herman was a life member of Moose #1478 and attended Asbury United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife Myrtle in 1989, his parents, two brothers, two sisters, and a granddaughter.
He is also survived by a brother Henry of Miami, Fla., his special friend Dorothy Shallen of Duluth and her family, six grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
Burial was in Sunrise Memorial Park with arrangements made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.
Dennis Leroy Morrison
Steve Morrison of Proctor is mourning the death of his father Dennis Leroy Morrison. He died Wed., Feb. 9, 2000 in a Duluth hospital. He was 54.
He was born in Ironwood. He attended school in Ironwood, graduating from Luther L. Wright High School in 1963. He was a tradesman. He worked at Reserve Mining Co. in Silver Bay.
He was past president of the Eagles Club in Farmington, Minn. and a member of the Aurora Athletic Club.
He is also survived by his parents Robert and Mildred Franti Morrison of Ironwood, his wife Diane, a daughter, a grandson, a brother, two sisters and aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
