Margaret Sophie Foster, 78, of Cottonwood, Ariz., formerly of New Ulm, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999 in Cottonwood.
Graveside services were held Jan. 3 at Cottonwood Cemetery.
She is survived by her daughter, Jean Schenk and husband Peter of Cottonwood; cousin Dorothy Smith of Owatoma; three nephews and two nieces.
She was preceded in death by her husband Gerald in 1995.
She was born in New Ulm in 1921. When she was nine years old, her father died and she and her mother moved to Colorado. She returned to New Ulm in 1943. She married Gerald Foster on Sept. 3, 1948 in New Ulm. They lived in Courtland, where they owned and operated a grocery business for 30 years. In 1952, when her daughter was two, she contracted polio, which she eventually conquered. In 1984, the couple moved to Arizona. Since 1994, she has lived with her daughter and son-in-law except for nine months spent in a nursing home. She was a life-long Catholic.
Memorial donations may be sent to the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 995, Cottonwood, Ariz. 86326.

Roger "Mickey" R. Oachs, 68, of Mankato, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000 at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester.
Services are 2 p.m. Monday at St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mankato, with burial and full military honors in Sterling Cemetery, Sterling Township, Blue Earth County.
Visitation is 3-6 p.m. Sunday at Mankato Mortuary, and will continue Monday one hour prior to services at the church.
He is survived by his wife Gloria; daughters, Rosanne Reed and husband Perry "Joe" of St. Cloud and Mary Winkelman and husband Jeffery of Mankato; son Randy Oachs and wife Sue of Mankato; six grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; sisters, Lorna Hanson of California, Doris Mattingly, Florence Standfest, Beulah McComb, Birdell Loe and Whilma Smith, all of Mankato; sisters-in-law, Barb Oachs, Helen Oachs and Marlene Southworth; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, six brothers and one sister.
He was born July 8, 1931 in Blue Earth County to William and Minnie (Ward) Oachs. he married Gloria Rosin on June 15, 1952 in Nicollet. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict from 1952 until 1954. He worked at North Star Concrete for 40 years before retiring in 1993. He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Mankato and Eagle Lake American Legion.

Mary Ann (Mrs. Leo) Sturm, 61, of 902 North Minnesota in New Ulm died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000 at the New Ulm Medical Center in New Ulm.
Mass of Christian Burial will 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm with burial in the Catholic Cemetery in New Ulm.
Visitation will be Sunday from 4-8 p.m. and 7:30-10 a.m. on Monday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. There will be a parish prayer service at 7 p.m. Sunday evening at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm.
She is survived by husband, Leo Sturm of New Ulm; daughter, Katherine Gentz of New Ulm; sons and daughters-in-law, Randall and Kimberly Sturm of Sumner, Wash., Lee and Jane Sturm of New Ulm; five grandchildren; brother and sisters-in-law, Donald and Laura Roiger of Plymouth, and June Roiger of Zimmerman.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Robert Roiger.
She was born April 5, 1938 in New Ulm to Edward and Lorraine (Williams) Roiger. She attended the Holy Trinity Catholic School and graduated from New Ulm public school. She married Leo Sturm June 5, 1956 at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in New Ulm. After marriage she worked at Kraft for thirty years, retiring eight years ago. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, and of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm.

John D. Piepgras, 67, of Lake Crystal, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000 at Madelia Community Hospital.
Services are 11 a.m. Monday at Pilgrim Funeral Home, Madelia, with burial in the Riverside Cemetery, Madelia.
Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service.
He is survived by daughters, Brenda Mosser and husband Pat of Madelia and Kathy Broste and husband Scott of Hanska; sons, Ric and wife Jane of Madelia and Dave and wife Mary of Cokato; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Lucille Ott of Cherokee, Iowa, Ruth Pouliot and husband Red of Winter Haven, Fla., Helen Mather and husband Lowell of Madelia and Frannie Hullinger of Minneapolis; and special friend Diane Knutson of Madelia and her children Michelle Knutson of Madelia, Larry Robinett of Wichita Falls, Texas and Gary Robinett of Abilene, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and sisters, Irene Hylen, Vivian Nicklasson and Viola Johnson.
He was born Sept. 29, 1932 in Lake Crystal, to David and Elizabeth (Fischer) Piepgras. He grew up in Lake Crystal and attended school there. He married Helen Burley on April 6, 1953. He served in the U.S. Army 1953-1954 during the Korean Conflict. When he returned, they farmed in rural Madelia. Helen died in 1974. He continued farming until retiring in 1998. In 1979 he met Diane Knutson and they spent the past 20 years together. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Madelia VFW and American Legion.

Leona Lydia Weihe - Funeral Services for Leona Lydia Weihe, 89, of Arlington, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church. Twila L. Roiger, 46, of St. Clair died Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2000 at Immanuel-St. Joseph's Hospital in Mankato.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. today at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Mankato with burial in Glenwood Cemetery.

Mildred Walters, 74, of Hanska, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000 at Madelia Community Hospital.
Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, New Ulm, with burial in Cambria Cemetery.
Visitation is 4-7 p.m.Monday and 7:30-10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Firle Funeral Home in New Ulm. A parish prayer service will be held 6:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
She is survived by her daughter Darlene Walters and husband Roger Griebel of Mankato; grandson Scott Walters of Milwaukee, Wis.; brother Leo Filzen of Arkansas; sister Norma Walters of New Ulm; nephew Doug Walters of New Ulm; other nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband and two sons.
She was born Sept. 21, 1925 in New Ulm to Ferdinand and Anna (Postel) Filzen. She spent her youth in New Ulm and attended St. Mary's Catholic grade school. She worked for a few years in the New Ulm area. She married Evan Walters April 15, 1953 in Judson. Together they farmed in Butternut Township for many years, moving to Hanska in 1975. After her husband died in 1990, she continued to live in Hanska, where she worked for Brown County. She was a member of Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, New Ulm.

Leonard J. Riederer, 76, of Springfield, formerly of Sleepy Eye, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000 at St. John's Lutheran Home, Springfield.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with burial in the Church of the Martyr's Cemetery, Leavenworth.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Monday and 7:30-10 a.m. Tuesday at Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye. There will be a parish prayer service at 7 p.m. and a Catholic Aid rosary at 4:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
He is survived by brothers, James of Apollo, Penn., Wilbert and wife Agnes of Bird Island, Brother Cletus of Quezon City, Philippines and Gerald and wife Lorell of Comfrey; sisters, Alyce and husband Florian Sprenger of Sauk Centre, Marie and husband Arnold Hillesheim of Springfield, and Marlene and husband Tom Johnson of New Ulm; sister-in-law Mary Ann Riederer of Springfield; and many nieces and nephews
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, John and Eugene; and nephew Dean.
He was born Aug. 14, 1923 in Mulligan Township, Brown County, to Leo and Matilda (Platz) Riederer. He attended District 70 schools in Mulligan Township and worked as a farm laborer until 1977. he also worked at Sanborn Manufacturing, Springfield, until retirement. He lived in Springfield and Sleepy Eye, and became a resident of St. John's Lutheran Home in May 1999. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, the Catholic Aid Association and Holy Family Society.

Joseph L. Holmes, 63, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000 in Edina.
Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Excelsior, with burial in Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis.
Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Monday and one hour prior to services at the church. There will be a prayer service 7 p.m. Monday at the church.
Huber Funeral Home, Excelsior, is in charge of arrangements.
He is survived by his wife Joan; children, Paul and wife Caroline, Michelle Howe and husband Curt, Karla Hovey and husband Rick, Kevin and fiancee Kirsten, Maureen Toft and husband Ron, and Aida Paulson and husband Wade; eight grandchildren; mother Helen Holmes; sisters, Bernadette, Cathy, Veronica and Maryanne; and many nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his son Patrick; father Lawrence; and brother Cyril.
He was born July 18, 1936 in Leavenworth. He served in the U.S. Army and was a retired research technologist with printing products at 3M. He was a member of Knights of Columbus, St. Mary's Catholic Church, Stillwater, and Santa Catalina Catholic Church, Tucson, Ariz. He was also a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity.

Margaret H. Kreft, 88, formerly of Gibbon died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at Franklin Health Care Center.
Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Gibbon with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 4 - 8 p.m. today and continues 7:30-11 a.m. Tuesday at Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in Gibbon and one hour before services Tuesday at the church.
She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Marilyn and Billy Messner of Gibbon, Karen and John Sommer of Winthrop; son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Merle Kreft of International Falls; son, Douglas Kreft and friend Peggy Olson both of Pine River; 19 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; 11 stepgrandchildren; 28 stepgreat-grandchildren; two stepgreat-great-grandchildren; twin sister, Mildred Lind of Winthrop; brother, Alden Olson of Winthrop Good Samaritan Center; and a sisters-in-law, Evelyn Olson of Winthrop Good Samaritan Center.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Helmuth Kreft on Nov. 16, 1978; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, all in infancy; sister, Edith Olson; brothers, Hilder and Elliot Olson; and brother and sister-in-law, Burton and Bernice Olson.
She was born Sept. 21, 1911, in Gibbon to Hans and Minnie (Lunderborg) Olson. She attended District 56 school and graduated from Gibbon Public High School in 1929. She attended Normal School for teachers training in St. Peter. She taught for several years in Gibbon and Lafayette areas. On Feb. 4, 1933, she married Helmuth Kreft at Immanuel Lutheran parsonage in Gibbon. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Gibbon and was a member of the church's ladies guild.

Jerold Melzer, 78, 804 N. Garden St., died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at Immanuel-St. Joseph's Hospital, Mankato.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, New Ulm, with burial in Linden Lutheran Cemetery, rural Hanska.
Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at Firle Funeral Home, New Ulm, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church Wednesday.
He is survived by his wife, Audrey; sons, Dale Johnson of Waterville, Howard and wife Christie of New Ulm, Jim and wife Mary of Eden Prairie; grandchildren, Jeremy Melzer of Minneapolis, Megan Melzer of New Ulm; sister, LaVerne Melzer of Hanska; brothers, Henry Jr. and J. Arden, both of Hanska; brother-in-law Earl Nelson and wife Gloria of Hanska; sister-in-law, Ruby Schmiesing of New Ulm; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and son, Darrell Johnson ion 1971.
He was born Aug, 18, 1921, in Madelia to Henry and Gertie (Hanson) Melzer. He grew up on the family farm and attended rural school. He married Audrey Nelson on May 23, 1953, in Kenyon. The couple farmed in Linden Township near Hanska until retiring in 1988. They moved to New Ulm in 1997. He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, New Ulm, and was a former member of Linden Lutheran Church, rural Hanska. He was a member of Hanska Lions Club and was active in the DFL party and 4-H.

Gloria (Mrs. Harold) Klement, 69, of rural Gibbon died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at her home.
The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Augustana Lutheran Church in Gibbon with burial in the Catholic cemetery in Gibbon.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Tuesday and 7:30-9 a.m. Wednesday at Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in Gibbon, and continues one hour before the service Wednesday at the church,
She is survived by her husband, Harold Klement of rural Gibbon; daughter and son-in-law, Katherine and Richard Schnobrich of rural New Ulm; sons, Thomas and Allan Klement both of rural Gibbon; five granddaughters; one grandson; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Helen Swenstad and special friend Bill Williams of Nashwauk; brother and sisters-in-law, Frank and Sharon Papke of Glencoe, and Leona Schroeder of Fairfax; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Leo and Flora Klement of Faribault.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Frederick Papke; sister-in-law, Lorine Kelly; and a niece, Laurie Klement.
She was born April 9, 1930, in Winthrop to Frebert and Florence (Olson) Papke. She graduated from Winthrop High School in 1948. She married Harold Klement on July 22, 1951, at St. Willibrord's parsonage in Gibbon. She worked at various jobs including being bookkeeper for the Custom Farm Services and Minnesota Feeder Pig Markets. She retired in 1995. She was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church in Gibbon, Ladies Aid, and was a past member of the church choir.

Mervin R. Cooke, 64, of North Mankato, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at Immanuel-St. Joseph's Hospital, Mankato.
Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at Woodland Hills Funeral Chapel, Mankato, with private burial.
Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and one hour prior to services in the funeral home chapel.
He is survived by his wife, Marty; daughter, Debbie Rowcliffe of Mankato; son, David of Mankato; stepson Troy Hauser and wife Karen of N. Mankato; stepdaughters, Doreen Oachs and husband Rodney of Mankato and Sheri Hauser and fiance Bob Olson of Mankato; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and brother LaRue and wife Joyce of Fridley.
He was preceded in death by his father and one brother.
He was born March 3, 1935, in Jackson to Harland and Bertha (Paulson) Cooke. He married Myrtle Gulden on June 21, 1975, in Mankato. He was a truck driver for Cliff Viessmann Trucking for 11 years.
