Rosemarie Patrice Tamillo
Rachelle West of Proctor is mourning the death of her mother Rosemarie Patrice Tamillo. She died Tues., Feb. 8, 2000 in a Duluth hospital. She was 72.

The Duluth resident was born in Cloquet. She worked as a bookkeeper at Twin Ports Grocery and St. Mary’s Medical Center. She was a former member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, a member of St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church and Legion Post 71.

She is also survived by a son, two other daughters, two sisters and three grandchildren.

Burial was in the Polish Catholic Cemetery.

Ruby E. MacDonald
Services will be held tomorrow, Fri. for Ruby E. MacDonald. She died Mon., Feb. 14, 2000 in Lake Haven Manor at the age of 90.

The former Second Ave. resident was born in Eldred, Minn. and lived in Crookston, Fargo, Bemidji and Proctor. She was a bookkeeper for various companies including Singer Sewing Machine Co.

She was preceded in death by her parents John and Sophie Hanson, her husband James H. and her son Thomas.

She is survived by her daughter-in-law Barbara MacDonald of Proctor, two granddaughters Lori MacDonald of Duluth and Kim (Steven) Elmer of Toivola, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 9 until the 10 a.m. services Friday in Bell Brothers Chapel. Rev. David Dusek officiating. Burial will be in Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Maurice “Morrie” P. Dahmen
Maurice “Morrie” P. Dahmen, who was born in Proctor, grew up here and graduated from Proctor High School in 1946, died Sat., Feb. 19, 2000 in his Scanlon home. He was 71.

He was born Jan. 19, 1929, in Proctor to Oliver and Minnie (Kelszenberg) Dahmen. He served in the Marine Corps on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Phillipine Sea. He worked for the DM&IR Railway in Proctor.

He was united in marriage to Marilyn Holmes at St. Casmir’s Catholic Church in Cloquet on August 21, 1954. He graduated from the University of Minnesota-Duluth with a teaching degree and later received a double master’s degree in education from UMD and the University of Wisconsin-Superior. He taught and coached in Cass Lake and then at West Junior High School’s physical education department in the Duluth school system.

He also taught adaptive physical education in Duluth for many years. He and his wife owned Landmark Realty Property and the Grand Avenue Dairy Queen in Duluth from 1969 until the present. He also operated the Safari Cafe at the Duluth Zoo from 1986 to 1988. He was on the Scanlon City Council for 18 years. He was a member of the Moose Club, the American Legion, Eagles Club and St. Rose Catholic Parish in Proctor.

He is survived by a daughter Kim (Brad) Nelson of Duluth, a son Troy Dahmen of Minneapolis, grandchildren Matt Nelson, Andrew Stransky and Gus Nelson and a special friend Ann Lundsten.

Services were held Wed. in St. Rose Catholic Church, Proctor. Interment was in Oneota Cemetery with full military rites.

Diane Marie Habert
After a nine-year battle with ALS Diane Marie Habert died Fri., Feb. 18, 2000 in her Saginaw home. She was 44.

She was born in Long Beach, Calif., and moved to the Duluth area in 1962. She graduated from Proctor High School in 1973 and married Stephen R. Habert on Aug. 28, 1988. She has worked for the airport restaurant, St. Ann’s Residence and Neal Bort Catering. She was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church and Teamsters Union Local 346.

Surviving are her husband Stephen, a son Mike (Emma) Higby of Moose Lake, her mother Mary Haar of Duluth, her father George Haar of Carlton, a grandson Ian Higby of Moose Lake, a sister Eileen (Ted) Beaupre of Esko, nieces Lori (Chris) Anderson of Cloquet and Lisa (Cory) Renshaw of Isle, a nephew Brian Bailey of Minneapolis, grandnephews Trevor Bailey of Esko and Jett Anderson of Cloquet, special nurses from Interim Healthcare Services, and her special friends Patches, Baby, Dede and Harriet.

Services were held Mon. in St. Rose Catholic Church, Proctor. The Rev. Father James Bissonette officiated. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Maxine Lambert
Services were held earlier this week for Maxine K. “Max” Lambert. She died Sat., Feb. 26, 2000 in a Duluth hospice at the age of 84.

The former Proctor resident was born April 18, 1915, in Negaunee, Mich., to James and Jane LaJoie Vercelline. She came to Duluth as a child and lived in Duluth and Proctor for most of her life. She attended Denfeld High School and married Wendell C. Lambert in 1939 in Duluth. Max enjoyed knitting, crocheting, fishing with her husband on the Gunflint Trail and bowling. She was a member of Lady Trainmen Tidal Wave Lodge 160.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Wendell in 1988, a sister Mary Mason and a brother Fritz Vercelline.

Survivors include daughters Wendy Carlberg of Proctor and Sandra (Raymond) Tigue of Munger, sons Arthur (Karen) of Alborn and Tim of Duluth, a brother Edward Vercelline of Duluth, grandchildren Toni Rae, Eric, Birgitta, Kristen and Hunter, and great-granddaughter Lyndsey Rae.

Inurnment was in Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Leonard Kinney
Leonard Forest Kinney, who was a founding member of St. Louis the County Rescue Squad, died Tues., Feb. 22, 2000 in Veterans Hospital, Mpls. He was 72.

The Boundary Ave. resident was born in Duluth to Forest and Ethel Kinney. He served in the Navy during World War II. He had worked with Interlake Iron for 15 years and retired from Pettibone Corp. in 1982 as a welder and general foreman. He attended Forbes United Methodist Church, was a founding member of St. Louis County Rescue Squad where he was a scuba diving instructor and was a member of VFW Post 137 and American Legion Post 432 in Warba.

He is survived by his wife Lillian, daughters Lenette (Rocco) Ierino of Duluth, Linda Kinney and Lorrie Kinney of Proctor, a son Leonard E. (Becky) of Hermantown, a brother Kenneth Kinney of Fontana, Calif., grandchildren David, Teresa, Jason, Jodi, Allan, Michael and Krystal, great-grandchildren Derek, Christian and Ella and many friends.

Services were held Saturday in Forbes United Methodist Church.

Burial was in Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Winifred Irene “Winnie” Eklund
Winifred Irene “Winnie” Eklund, who was a community activist in Duluth and was named Woman of the Year in 1983, died Sat., Mar. 4, 2000 in her Village Drive home in Proctor. She was 84.

She was born in Cloquet. The family left Cloquet on the last train to Duluth during the Cloquet fire. She graduated from Denfeld High School in 1935. She married Carl Eklund. She was a beautician for various businesses including setting hair at Bell Brothers Funeral Home until retiring in 1982.

She was a member of St. James Catholic Church. She served as the district chairman with the March of Dimes. She was the first woman appointed to the Parks and Recreation board, a member of the first committee for Educational TV, which started WDSE/TV Channel 8 and a YMCA board member. She was general chairman of Women’s Institute and a member of its advisory board.

She was past president of the West Duluth Women’s Club, Merritt P.T.S.A., Duluth Council of P.T.S.A. and District P.T.S.A. She was a member of the state board P.T.S.A. serving in the P.T.S.A. for 22 years. She was general chairman of the Duluth Day Luncheon in 1974.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years Carl Eklund, daughters Donna (Bill) Ongalo of Angora and Kathleen (Don) Stanley of Proctor, a sister Katherine Sampson of Duluth, a brother Louis (Jan) Doucette of Duluth, five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Burial was in Oneota Cemetery.

Adeline Louise Rice
Sharon Glen of Proctor is mourning the death of her mother Adeline Louise Rice. She died Mon., Feb. 28, 2000 in Hibbing at the age of 91.

She was born in Chisholm and was a lifelong resident.

She married George Rice, Sr. in Chisholm and she was a homemaker.

She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Chisholm.

Adeline is also survived by her son, another daughter, two sisters, a daughter-in-law, ten grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and many relatives and special friends.

Inurnment was in Chisholm Cemetery.

Marvin O. Brenna
Services were held earlier this week for Marvin O. Brenna. He died Fri., Mar. 3, 2000 in his Ugstad Rd. home. He was 81.

A resident of Proctor for 61 years, Mr. Brenna was born in Eden Township, Gully, Minn. He married Joyce Emberg in Proctor Sept. 8, 1948. He was employed as a machinist with the Duluth Missabe and Iron Range Railway for 32 years, retiring in 1972. Following his retirement, he operated Brenna’s Home Repair for many years. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving as a ball turret gunner on a B-17. He completed 25 missions and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and three Oak Leaf Clusters. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Proctor, the International Association of Machinists, Proctor American Legion, Proctor Area Historical Society, DM&IR Veterans Association, the Eighth Air Force Historical Society and the 96th Bomb Group.

He was preceded in death by his four brothers and a sister and his great-grandson Jack Swanson who died in January.

Survivors include his wife Joyce, daughters Kristine Lyons of Moose Lake and Kathy Wolffe of Knife River, a son David (Chris) Brenna of Proctor, sisters Inez (Andrew) Gordon of Klamath Falls, Ore., Gladys (Philip) Megordon of Palm Beach, Fla., and Vivian (Halvor) Rijke of Gully, Minn., grandchildren Chad (Becky) Brenna, Nicole (Matt) Swanson, Becky and Adam Wolffe, great-grandchildren Jessica Taylor, Ian Swanson and Cole Brenna.

Service was held Monday in Immanuel Lutheran Church, Proctor, the Rev. Mark Osthus officiating.

Interment was in Oneota Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Carl William Gustofson
Carl William Gustofson, who moved to Proctor 57 years ago to work on the DM&IR Railroad, died Wed., Mar. 8, 2000 in his St. Louis River Rd. home. He was 81.

He was born in 1918 in Absaraka, ND to Gustav and Hannah Gustofson. He married Olivia Ann Larson, January 11, 1940 in Tintah, MN. Carol was a member of Knights of Columbus, Legion of Mary and St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.

Carl is preceded in death by his son James and granddaughter Carrie.

He is survived by his wife Olivia, three daughters Mary Smestad (Daniel), Ann Fairbanks (Skip Hofstrand), and Elizabeth Schwartz (Dave), five sons John, Joseph (Deb), Jerry (Connie), Gustof (Wendy) and Roger (Peggy), eight grandsons, 17 granddaughters and 13 great-grandchildren. The family wants to extend a special “thank you” to Dr. Skip Hofstrand for making it possible for us to spend our father’s last days at home with family.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.
