Eleanore White
Eleanore White, who has lived in Proctor for over 60 years, died Sat., Mar. 11, 2000 in a Duluth hospital. She was 77.

She was born in 1922 in Brooks, Minn. She was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter Janice White, brothers Robert, Victor and Jim Daoust and a sister Delima Kokkinen.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years Earl, four sons Bill (Carol) of White Bear Lake, Minn., Don (Pam) of Proctor, Greg (Mary) of Hermantown and Tom (Kathy) of Superior, three daughters Gail (Chris) Palmer of Arlington, Texas, Nancy (Ben) McKnight of Duluth and Patricia (Gary) Nelson of Munger, three sisters Dorothy Stokke of Brainerd, Doris (Emmett) Ree of Moose Lake and Catherine (Earl) Conway of Rifle, Okla., 16 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Eleanore was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed.

Fr. James Bissonette of St. Rose Catholic Church officiated. Burial was in Maple Hill Cemetery, Hibbing. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Arvid J. Sorvari
Alma Tuomi is saddened by the death of her brother, Arvid J. Sorvari. He died Wed., Mar. 8, 2000 in Maplewood, Minn. He was 87.

He was born in Hibbing. He married Dorothy Cernota in 1941. He lived in the Meadowlands area most of his life and was a farmer, logger and truck driver for Coons Construction.

He is also survived by his son, three other sisters, four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Inurnment was in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Elmer.

Richard “Dick” S. Johnson
Richard “Dick” S. Johnson, who built his own home on Midway Rd. in the 1930’s and lived there for over 60 years, died Tues., Mar. 7, 2000 in Nopeming Nursing Home. He was 94.

He was born to Charles and Caroline Johnson in Hermantown and attended the Adolph School. Dick married Helen Nelson in 1943 in Duluth. He was employed by the Duluth Missabe and Iron Range Railroad for 40 years, retiring in 1970 as a crane operator. Dick was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church in Midway Township.

He was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.

Dick is survived by his wife of 57 years Helen, his son Richard “Rick” (Kathy) of Hermantown and his two grandsons Matthew and Benjamin.

Burial was in Augustana Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Floyd R. Brause
Floyd R. Brause, who moved to Proctor as a child with his family and went on to graduate from PHS in 1936, died Mar. 9 in Anchorage, Alaska. He was 80.

He graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College in 1944. He was called to the ministry and was ordained from Augustana Lutheran Seminary (later Chicago Theological Seminary) in 1947 with an M.A. in Theology. He served congregations in Sandstone-Dell Grove and Brainerd, all in Minnesota, before moving with his wife and three children to Alaska in 1959 where he founded and served St. Mark Lutheran in Anchorage and Joy Lutheran in Eagle River as pastors. He also served briefly as pastor in Welkom, O.F.S., Republic of South Africa. He retired in 1985.

He enjoyed canoeing and hunting in Minnesota and Alaska, deep-sea fishing in his boat, “Scruffy” in Kachemak Bay and woodworking.

He was preceded in death by his parents Katherine and Carl and his brother Raymond and sister Irene.

He is survived by his good partner and wife, Lucille, of 54 years; sons Alan (Marly Helm), Corey, Jay and life-partner Gene Dugan; four grandchildren, and five nieces in Minnesota; family and friends Linda and Bill Greene, JoAnne Zito Brause, Pastor Les and Ruth Peterson, Harry and Phyllis Knutson and Glen and Norma Groth.

Sharon Gay Hicks Rudolph
Sharon Gay Hicks Rudolph of Schaumberg, Ill., died Feb. 19 at the age of 55.

Born Mar. 29, 1944, to the late Sterling and Carol Hicks, she graduated from PHS in 1962.

Sharon is survived by her son Russell (Jen) Rudolph of Lake of the Hills, Ill., daughters Laurie Birch of Houston, Texas, Suzanne Esquivel, Lakewood, Colo., and Denice (Jim) Glowinke, Naperville, Ill., brother Toddy (Kathy) Hicks, sister Judy (Ed) Baker, four grandchildren and best friend Bill Stupp.

Carl. A. “Archie” Lind
Sandy Maki of Proctor is mourning the death of her father Carl. A. “Archie” Lind. He died Sun., Mar. 19, 2000 in Chris Jensen Health Center. He was 82.

He was born in Kinghurst Township (Itasca County). He graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1936.

He was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) from 1936 to 1939. Archie married Violet Wothe.

Archie worked his entire life in the auto repair business, both as a mechanic and body repairer.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church and the former St. Matthew’s American Lutheran Church. He was a member of Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Ionic Masonic Lodge and Aad Temple. He belonged to Moose Lodge 1478 and the Elk’s Lodge and was a lifetime member of the National Association of Civilian Conservation Corps Alumni.

Archie enjoyed hunting, fishing and woodworking.

Archie is also survived by two sons, six grandchildren, a great-granddaughter, a brother-in-law, two sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews.

Interment was in Park Hill Cemetery.

Kenneth James Pollard
Kenneth James Pollard, who settled on Grand Lake in Saginaw following his retirement to enjoy the outdoors and fishing, died Wed., Mar. 8, 2000. He was 82.

He was born in Buffton Township, Ottertail County, Minn. He entered the Navy in 1936 as a Commissary Steward. He served 21 years of active duty, achieving the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He remained active with the Naval Fleet Reserve Association until his death.

During his naval career, he served on 14 seagoing ships. He sailed the world twice, survived the bombing at Midway Island and witnessed the signing of the Japanese Surrender from the crow’s nest of a destroyer tied next to the USS Missouri, a distance of less than 85 feet.

He settled in New York Mills, Minn., in 1957, working at various positions in the area including heading the City Water Department for six years. He later returned to sailing as a Merchant Seaman on the Great Lakes ore boats. He also continued to be active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars, area politics and the neighborhood.

He is survived by two sons, a sister, two brothers, a foster daughter, six grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Lyle Francis Talbot
Lyle Francis Talbot is being mourned here by his father James “Reggie” Talbot of Proctor and his brother David Talbot. He died of lung cancer in his Great Falls, MT home. He was 56.

He was born in Duluth and graduated from Fergus County High School in Lewistown. He was a member of the Montana Air National Guard 1964-70 and moved to Great Falls in 1966.

He married Frances Fisher in Lewistown.

After moving to Great Falls, Talbot worked for Jensen Food Sales and Hawk Electric. In 1970, he moved to Havre and worked for Great Plains Supply, then lived in Bozeman from 1972-75, working for Gallatin Homes in Belgrade.

He returned to Great Falls in 1975 and worked for Lumber-Yard Supply until 1983. He worked for Americana Expressway from 1984 until 1990, then began his own business as a freight broker, TSR Enterprises.

He was a member of Holy Spirit Parish and attended Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

He enjoyed street rods, golf and squirrel-watching.

Survivors also include his wife Frances of Great Falls, son Jesse (Teresa) of Great Falls, sister Patricia (Ken) Funk of Redding, Calif., three other brothers Joseph “Ron” (Ardis) of Duluth, Michael “Butch” (Arlene) of San Leandro, Calif. and granddaughters Ashley and Brittany of Great Falls.

Curtis Wayne Kroll
Curtis Wayne Kroll, a lifelong area resident and a Proctor High School graduate, died Thurs., Mar. 23, 2000 in Duluth. He was 58.

He had worked for Halvor Lines and Curtis Oil and Tire.

He was preceded in death by his mother Mabel A. Kroll in 1994.

Curtis is survived by his aunts Bertha Kroll and Mabel E. Kroll, both of Duluth, many cousins, and special friend Jan.

Burial was in Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Lucille V. Seline
Lucille V. Seline, who had lived in Twig for more than 50 years, died Mon., Mar. 20, 2000, in Duluth. She was 72.

She was born in Duluth. She was raised in Canyon. Lucille was a graduate of Alborn High School and attended Duluth Business University. She had been an employee of the Target store for 15 years. Lucille bowled in the Hilltopper Bowling League and was bookkeeper for the Sportsmen’s Bowling League at Skyline Lanes. She enjoyed bingo and adult volleyball at Caribou Lake School.

She had attended St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Canyon and was a former member of the Grand Lake Fire Sirens.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her former husband, Raymond “Swede”, in 1991.

Lucille is survived by her son Alan (Diane) Seline of Hermantown, daughters Beverly Seline and Nancy Seline of Twig, a sister Gloria (Leonard) Obeidzinski of Carlton, a brother Dirk (Diane) Carlson of Saginaw, grandchildren Lonnie Seline, Rhonda Seline and Charles Brown, a great-grandson Kodi Seline and many nieces and nephews.

She will be sadly missed by her cats Morris, Dolly, Tiffany and Jerilyn.

Burial was in St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Canyon. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.
