Walter H. Thygeson
The Thygeson families in Minnesota, Illinois and California were saddened by the death of Commander Walter H. Thygeson, USN, ret., on Sat., Apr. 29, 2000, at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego. He was the fourth of eight children and the first of the Thygeson clan born in Proctor to Niels and Arlie Thygeson. He was born on Aug. 26, 1910, after their relocation from Abbotsford, Wisc. Walt and his sister May attended Duluth State Teachers College after his graduation from Proctor High School in 1928. May graduated in 1931 followed by Walt a year later.

Walt joined the Naval Reserve in 1934 and trained on the USS Paducah while locating his first teaching job in Bagley. He married Duluth’s fairest lady, Doris Bloom, in 1936. His ability to establish auto repair curricula in high schools was becoming widely recognized when WWII broke out. Ensign Thygeson was ordered to San Francisco and assigned to the destroyer USS Sands as chief engineer. From 1941 to 1943 he was the officer in charge of landing craft maintenance on the West Coat. He was promoted to Commander in 1944 following his establishment of the U.S. Navy ships preservation training facilities on both the east and west coasts.

Following the war he remained in San Diego as a teacher, service station owner and inspector for mine sweeper construction at a local ship yard. He retired in 1970 after more than a 25-year career with the Navy civil service as a transportation engineer. He was a Proctor Journal subscriber for 55 years.

He is survived by his wife Doris, son David Walter, brother Merle Aren of Rolling Meadows, Ill., two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren

He was preceded in death by his daughter Joan Stevens, his sister Bessie May, and his five brothers Thomas Martin, Niels Arlie, Robert Michael, Lloyd George and Harold Arthur also known as Tom, Niels, Duke, Tiss and Joe.

Burial was at Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery.

Wilmer O. Swanstrom
Wilmer O. Swanstrom, who was born in Proctor, died Wed., Apr. 26, 2000 in his Zim home. He was 74.

Wilmer grew up in Beaver Bay and graduated from Two Harbors High School, class of 1943. He was a longtime area resident, where he worked as a millwright for International Multi-Foods and resided in Zim since 1988.

Wilmer is survived by his wife, a son, four daughters, 14 grandchildren, a great-granddaughter, a brother and two sisters.

Maybelle Florence Holets
Former Proctor resident, Maybelle Florence Holets, died Sat., Apr. 29, 2000 in Nopeming Nursing Home. She was 86.

She was born in and graduated from Two Harbors. She moved to the Twin Cities to work during the Great Depression. She married Harold Holets on July 25, 1942 in Two Harbors, moved to Meadowlands, then Proctor and later to Morgan Park, where she had lived with her husband for the last 49 years.

Maybelle enjoyed knitting, crocheting, handiwork, cross-stitch embroidering, baking, plants and flowers.

She is survived by her husband Harold of 58 years, a daughter, a son, three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Burial was in Lakeview Cemetery in Two Harbors.

Loren W. Crittenden
Mary E. Johnson of Pike Lake is saddened by the death of her brother, Loren W. Crittenden. He died Tues., May 16, 2000 in a Duluth hospital. He was 26.

Loren was born in Duluth.

He is survived by a daughter, his mother Mary Crittenden of Duluth, three other sisters, three brothers, three nephews and a niece and two cousins.

Robert “Bob” K. Fermenich
Robert “Bob” K. Fermenich, who lived in Saginaw and drove buses for the Proctor Public Schools for over 32 years, died Mon., May 15, in Okeechobee, Fla. He was 75.

He was born in Duluth. He married Myrtle Anderson. They were married for 57 years. He also worked as a janitor for the Caribou Lake School until his retirement in 1983.

Survivors include his wife Myrtle, children Judy (Edward) Howard of Saginaw, Robert L. “Pete” (Gaye) Fermenich of Pompano, Fla. and Jean (Jerry Nowak) Oswell of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., nine grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Viola Seeley, Lorraine Erkkila of Proctor is mourning the death of her mother, Viola Seeley. She died Wed., May 17, 2000 in Duluth. She was 85.

She was born in Duluth and graduated from Denfeld High School. Her husband Robert J. MacIntyre died in 1947 and she raised all six children by herself.

She is also survived by two other daughters, two sons, a brother, 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Burial was in Sunrise Memorial Park.

Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Betty M. Gaus
Services were held earlier in the week for Betty M. Gaus of Solway. She died Thurs., May 11, 2000 in a Duluth hospital. She was 69.

She was born in Duluth. She graduated from Alborn High School in 1947. She married John F. Gaus.

She was employed at the Duluth Air Force Base Credit Union for ten years as manager and loan officer. She retired from St. Mary’s Medical Center in 1995 as patient account representative. After retirement, she worked at Northern Collections, Inc. in Cloquet. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Culver and enjoyed working with people and resolving problems.

She is survived by her children John F. (Joanne) Gaus, Jr. of Duluth, Linda (Garry) Rainis of Maple Valley, Wash. and Susan (Steven) Pechauer of Biloxi, Miss.; her father Stanley McEachen of Oklahoma City, Okla.; grandchildren Cynthia Sahu, Valarie Rainis, Jennifer Scott, Steven Pechauer, Nathan Gaus and Shannon Koecher; a great-grandson Quincy Sahu; a stepsister Kathy Baghin of Oklahoma City, special aunts Jennie B. Nelson of Duluth and Phyllis Hoiem of Twig, and a very special friend Richard Trepanier of Duluth.

Interment services were in Solway Township Cemetery.

Nancy Lawien
Services were held for Nancy Lawien. She died Tues., May 23, 2000 in her Birch Point Road home following a long battle with ovarian cancer. She was 57.

She was born in Duluth. Nancy was a hairdresser before working at the University of Minnesota-Duluth in the Food Service Department for more than 18 years. Nancy was a full-time mother, loved playing bridge, roller skating, fishing on Caribou Lake and anything that resembled Elvis.

She is survived by her husband Clarence, parents Kenneth and Edna of Duluth, a son John (Lizette) of Duluth, daughters Wendy (Tim) Wysocki of Cloquet and Heidi Lawien of Reno, Nev., grandchildren Christian and Corbin Lawien and Whitney and Lexus Wysocki, a special brother-in-law George Lawien and many loving and faithful relatives and friends, including those at UMD, the bridge club and the roller rink.

Burial was in Park Hill Cemetery.

Michael Lee Mulvaney
Mary Ellen Gray of Proctor is saddened by the loss of her brother, Michael Lee Mulvaney. He died Sat., May 21, 2000 in Cloquet. He was 55.

He enjoyed reading and walking in the park.

Burial was in Sandy Lake Cemetery, Blackhoof Township.

Arthur R. Dallmann
Arthur R. Dallmann, who attended Beartrap School in Grand Lake Township, died Sat., May 27, 2000 in Cloquet. He was 78.

He was born in St. Louis County. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Saginaw.

Arthur married Ann Dahl on May 12, 1948. He was a veteran of the Army during World War II where he was awarded the Bronze Star and the Pacific Theater Medal. He was a bricklayer for 40 years, working for Billman Home Center until retiring in 1987. He also worked for the Mesabi DM&IR Railway for 10 years.

He was a member of Hebert-Kennedy VFW Post 3979 in Cloquet.

He is survived by his wife Ann Jean of Grand Lake Township, a son Randy of Saginaw, a daughter Jean “Edie” Dallmann of Culver, a brother Walter Dallmann of Cloquet, sisters Rosella Amborn of St. Paul and Lucille Dallmann of Stanley, Wis., a grandson Fritz Arthur Linder of Culver, nephews Gary Dahl of Cloquet and Billy Dallmann of Saginaw, and several nieces and nephews.

Private burial will be held at a later date in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery.

Signe Klara Krokum
Services were held last week for Signe Klara Krokum. She died Tues., May 23, 2000 in Lakeshore Lutheran Home. She was 92.

The former N. Second Ave. resident was born in Strommen, Norway. Signe came to Proctor in 1927, where she married Ludwig Krokum the following year. They made their home on Vinland Street. The Krokums moved to Minneapolis for a time until returning to Proctor in 1983, residing at Railview Apartments.

Signe was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and its Ladies Circle. She was also a member of the Trinity

Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star and AARP. The Krokums celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary in July 1999.

Signe is preceded in death by her parents and four siblings.

She is survived by her husband Ludwig, a son Rodney (Audrey) of Cincinnati, grandchildren Candy Ploetz, Scott Krokum Lee Krokum and Lucy Krokum and seven great-grandchildren Nicholas, Jacob, Ryan, Jennifer, Kerry, Alex and Travis.

Interment was in Lakewood Cemetery, Minneapolis. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Gayle G. Carlson
Gayle G. Carlson, who was born in Proctor and was a lifelong area resident, died Wed., May 31, 2000 in a Duluth hospital. She was 80.

Gayle was a 1937 graduate of Proctor High School and had worked at the former Cozy Corner in Proctor. She loved to cook and bake.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Carl E. Carlson in 1992.

She is survived by her brother Glenn (Bonnie) Thoreson of Murphy, N.C., nieces and nephews, and special neighbors James Gross and Diane Anderson.

Inurnment was in Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.
