Hazel A. Fermenich
Hazel A. Fermenich, who lived in Saginaw for many years where she was a housewife and farmed with her husband, died Thurs., June 22, 2000 in Nopeming Nursing Home. She was 97.

The Midway Township resident was born in Clarion, Iowa. They moved to Proctor in 1983.

She was a former member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Proctor, active in the Warba and Duluth Flower Clubs, taught Sunday school and served as president of 4-H.

She was preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Nora Pyle, her husband Valentine in 1984 and a daughter Caroline Watters.

Hazel is survived by her son Ellsworth V. (Lorraine) Fermenich of Cloquet, a sister Clarion (Donald) Haluptzok of Cloquet, four grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, 20 great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Burial was in Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Richard J. Ballantine
Richard J. Ballantine, who moved to Proctor last year and was part of the Byrd Expedition to the South Pole, died Fri., June 23, 2000 in a Duluth hospital. He was 75.

He was born in Markville, Minn. and then moved to Omaha, Neb. He has been a quality-control inspector for AT&T, where he worked for over 45 years. After retiring from AT&T, he worked for a while for Lucent Technologies. He served with the Navy during World War II. He attended Asbury United Methodist Church and had been active in the Omaha VFW.

His parents were Ralph and Hattie Ballantine. His son Richard R. served in the U.S. Marines and died during the Vietnam War.

Surviving are his wife Patricia, daughters Connie (Larry) Marinovic of Omaha, Kathy (John) Taylor of Omaha, stepchildren Ronnie, Cary, Brad and Penny Ballantine, Sherry Foss and Wendy Demenge, sisters Norma (Jack) Rose of Fort Meyers, Fla., Carol (Denny) Juvland of St. Paul, brothers Ray (Sandy) Ballantine of St. Paul and Lee (Peggy) Ballantine of Osceola, Wis., and six grandchildren.

Burial was in Bethany Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Combined Duluth VFW Honor Guard. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Ethel Mae Albertson
Ethel Mae Albertson, who was born in Midway and was a Missabe Miss for the DMIR during World War II, succumbed to cancer Sat., July 1, 2000 in Nopeming Nursing Home. She was 75.

The Ratika Road resident later worked for St. Scholastica and was active in all aspects of Pine Hill Lutheran Church for many years.

She was preceded in death by her husband Gordon in 1986 and a brother Leroy.

She is survived by a son Larry G. of Duluth, daughters Judy A. (Bob) Woods of Newport, Minn. and Susie M. (Bill) Szeyeczyk of Grand Forks, N.D., sisters Florence (Gene) Borg of Duluth, Mary Anderson of Cloquet, Martha (Joe) Snyder of Isanti, Minn. and Virginia (John) Sandholm of Roseville, Minn., brother Don (Rose) Nolin of Duluth and John (Karen) Nolin of Crystal Lake, Ill., grandchildren Brian, Bobbi Jo, Sandra and Brenda, three great-grandchildren Melissa, Brandon and Brittany and many nieces and nephews, and special friend Irene Parker.

Burial was in Sunrise Memorial Park.

George W. LaLonde, Sr.
George W. LaLonde, Sr., who moved to Proctor 20 years ago, volunteered as an instructor for the Proctor Junior Golf League and was active in neighborhood community work, lost his battle with cancer Fri., June 30, 2000. He was 63.

The North Sixth Avenue resident was born in Sioux Lookout, Ontario. He came to the U.S. at age 5, grew up in Hermantown and had been a Proctor resident since 1980. George was a graduate of Hermantown H.S. and a peacetime veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in Germany. He had been an employee of U.S. Steel’s Duluth Works, Lyons Ford and Bankers Life and Casualty Co. of Kenosha, Wis., Dart Transit and then Jeff Foster Trucking from 1990 until the present time. Among his numerous awards, he received the One Million Mile Accident Free award from the American Trucking Assn. George married Karen Tuomi-Spindler on Dec. 2, 1983 in Tennessee. He was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church and the Proctor Golf Assn. George was an avid golfer and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his father Francis in 1983, his mother Corrine in 1981 and special companions Muffy, Gizmo and Walker.

Survivors include his wife Karen (Tuomi-Spindler) LaLonde, mother-in-law Elma Tuomi of Proctor, children Barbara (David) Christianson of Belle Plaine, Minn., Chuck Spindler (Kayleen) of Proctor, George (Tammy) LaLonde, Jr. of Superior, Kim Waldal (Jason) of Roseau and Donald LaLonde (Diane) of Duluth, brothers Leo (Virginia) of Aurora, Jerry (Cathie) of Palo, Jim of Sturtevent, Wis., Bob (Darla) of North Pole, Alaska and Tom of Duluth, 15 grandchildren and dedicated companions Wizzer and Sparky.

Burial was in Oneota Cemetery. Memorials to the family may be made at First Nat’l Bank of Proctor, 211 Second St., Proctor, Minn. 55810.

Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Roger James “Bud” Malley
Services were held earlier this week for Roger James “Bud” Malley. He died Fri., July 7, 2000 in his Brook St. home. He was 82.

He was born in Duluth and attended Denfeld High School. He married June Agnes Bonnier in Cleveland, and together they raised nine children. Bud was a maintenance welder with U.S. Steel for more than 40 years, retiring in 1979.

He was a very active member of St. Rose Catholic Church. Bud was also a volunteer driver with Meals on Wheels from 1970-1998, a member of the Steelworkers Union and Steelworkers of America (retired).

He is survived by his daughters Carol (Richard) Hessevick of Grand Rapids, Marilyn Allen of Proctor, Susan Malley of Knife River and Deborah (Tom) Williams of Eden Prairie, Minn., sons Donald (Marion) Malley of Babbitt, Wayne (Betty) Malley of Duluth, Martin (Pam) Malley of Omaha, Neb., Daniel (Mary) Malley of Proctor and Richard Malley of Proctor, sisters Tyse (Walt) Cameron of Billings, Mont., Bea (Glenn) Olson of Fergus Falls, Minn., and Babe Wiita of Duluth, 22 grandchildren and a loving extended family.

The Rev. Father James Bissonette officiated at Tuesday’s service. Burial was in Oneota Cemetery.

Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Ray John Gamache
Services have been held for former Pike Lake resident Ray John Gamache. He died July 5, 2000 in Franciscan Health Center. He was 77.

He was born in Duluth and was a 1942 graduate of Denfeld High School. From 1940 to 1946, he pitched for the American Legion Junior Baseball Club and the West Duluth Cubs.

After signing a contract in 1940 with the National Association Professional Baseball League, he played for the Grand Forks Chiefs and the Duluth Dukes.

In 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was a staff sergeant as a physical training instructor in Miami Beach, Fla. After his discharge, he returned to baseball until 1946. He later became a member of retail clerks, working many area businesses, retiring from Anderson Furniture Co.

He is survived by his sisters Joyce (Neil) McNeil and Louana Johnson, his children John (Alma) Gamache, Jean Ksicinski and Gary (Shannon) Gamache, grandchildren Misty, Ray, Andrew, James, Dan, Amanda, Mike and T.J. and his special companion Gloria Christensen.

Burial was in Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Carl E. “Ed” Johnson
Services were held last week for Carl E. “Ed” Johnson. He died June 30, 2000 in his Munger home. He was 83.

He was born in Duluth. He married Rosella Bartlett on July 26, 1940. He worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps camps and sailed the lakes in the 1940’s. He was a World War II veteran, having served 1944-46. He worked at National Iron for 36 years and retired in 1982. He was a boat racer in the late 1940’s and 1950’s and enjoyed hunting with friends and family. He was a member of the American Legion Post 71 and VFW Post 6320.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Rose in 1978, a brother Arnold E. and sister Lillian E. Miskulin.

He is survived by his loving companion Marion Pearson, daughters Margery (Albert) Stelzer of South Milwaukee, Bonnie (Frank) Siiro of Munger, grandchildren Laurie (Scott) Smart of South Milwaukee, Dan Siiro of Gordon, David (Wanda) Siiro of McHenry, Ill., Sandra (George) Schrader of International Falls, Brenda (Steve) Shouts of Munger, great-grandchildren Jared, Kara, Brandon Smart and Amanda Siiro, and step-great-grandchild Bill Schrader, sister-in-law Elaine Johnson and brother-in-law Rudy Miskulin.

Services were in Bell Brothers Chapel with burial in Oneota Cemetery. Military honors accorded by the Duluth VFW Honor Guard.

Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Betty L. Ecklund
Services will be held tomorrow, Friday, for Betty L. Ecklund. A former Pike Lake and Twig resident for 30 years, she died Mon., July 17, 2000 in a Duluth hospital. She was 76.

She was born in Duluth. She had lived at Nopeming Nursing Home for the past two years. She attended Denfeld High School. Betty was owner and operator of the former Shoppers City Beauty Salon and Lavender Beauty Salon. She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Twig and a former Sunday School teacher and Sunday School superintendent.

She enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, spending time at the cabin on Island Lake, gardening, traveling and playing parlor games, especially Scrabble.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Robert A. “Bob” Ecklund, stepfather Pearly Klawitter and sister Alice Anderson.

Survivors include her children Richard “Dick” Jugasek of Duluth, John (Sylvia) Jugasek of Monroe, N.C., Jane (Paul) Bergquist of Saginaw, Tad Janczak of Esko and Robert Ecklund of Grand Lake, grandchildren Jason (Missy Zapp and her children Kylee and Shawna) Bergquist, Jodi (Brad) VanValkenburg, Heidi (Scott) McLeod, Heather (fiancee Chad Carlson) Bergquist, Mark Bergquist, Angela Ecklund, Clarissa Lind and Sarah Janczak and great-grandchildren Jared, Brenan and Ramsey VanValkenburg.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. today (Thursday) in Bell Brothers Chapel, and continue from 10 until the 11 a.m. service Friday in Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Twig, Rev. Marshall Moen officiating. Burial will be in Grand Lake Cemetery. Memorials to Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Twig, would be appreciated. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Marie E.C. Thompson
Elvina Wigington of Proctor is saddened by the death of her sister Marie E.C. Thompson. She died Sun., July 16, 2000 in a Duluth hospital. She was 79.

She was born in Whitehall, Wis., and had lived in the Duluth area most of her life. She was a former member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Proctor and before moving to Lake Haven she had lived in the McCarthy Manor and Hillside Gardens.

She was preceded in death by her husband John “Rusty” Thompson in 1988.

She is survived by five stepchildren, five other sisters, a brother and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation is 12:30 until the 1 p.m. service today (Thursday) in Sunrise Memorial Park Mausoleum. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.
