Hilda Schmidt Ernst
Hilda Schmidt Ernst, 79, of Cottage Grove, Ore., formerly of Mt. Lake, died April 21, 2001, of cancer.
Memorial services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m., at Lakeview Gospel Church in Mt. Lake.
Interment will be at Mt. Lake Cemetery in Mt. Lake.
Hilda P. Pankratz was born Nov. 21, 1921, to John and Helena Pankratz in Mt. Lake.
In 1940, she married Willie Schmidt at Gospel Mennonite Church in Mt. Lake. A year later the couple moved to Kelsey, then to Freeman, S.D., in 1947, before returning to Kelsey in 1952. They lived and farmed near Kelsey until 1976 when they retired to Thatcher, Ariz., and built a home in nearby Pima.
The couple moved to Cottage Grove, Ore., in 1996. Willie died in 1999.
In 2000, Hilda married Albert Ernst in Cottage Grove.
Hilda enjoyed crafts, cards, reading traveling and helping others. She also took special interest in the mission work in Tiawan of her nephew, Rodney Van Schooten.
Memorials are preferred to The C&MA, Box 35000, Colorado Springs, CO 80935, with a designation “Work Special — R&C Van Schooten.”
In addition to her first husband Willie, Hilda was preceded in death by a son, James Schmidt in 1969; a daughter, Dorothea Greene in 1998; a grandson; and three brothers and two sisters.
Survivors include her husband, Albert of Cottage Grove; a daughter, Verlean (Bill) McCoy of Creswell; three grandchildren; and six sisters.
Dudley Grunewald
Dudley Grunewald, 64, of Windom died April 26, 2001, at his home in rural Windom.
Services were held Monday at American Lutheran Church in Windom with Rev. Stephen Norby officiating.
Special music was provided by Carol Vought, organist.
Pallbearers were Ronnie Schmidt, Ronnie Vought, Glen Grunewald, Jason Flaherty, Ernie Ysker and Scott Benson.
Honorary pallbearers were Dustin Grunewald, Renae Lenoir, Ashley Lenoir, Nicholas Lenoir, Dylin Lenoir and Danielle Grunewald.
Interment was at Lakeview Cemetery in Windom.
Anderson-Schmidt Funeral Home of Windom was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
Dudley John Grunewald was born June 30, 1936, to Ernest and Ethel (Martin) Grunewald in Dale Township of Cottonwood County. He received his education in rural schools in Cottonwood County.
Dudley worked for Tony Downs Foods in St. James for several years.
In 1957, Dudley married Bernice Horkey in Windom. They lived in Dale Township, Kinbrae, Wilder and Bingham Lake.
He worked at the tile factory in Windom for several years until going to work for Double E, pouring cement slabs for grain bins.
Following the death of his wife, Bernice in 1984, Dudley continued to work at Double E until heart problems in the early 1990s forced an early retirement.
Dudley enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Pamela; three sons, Norman, Roger and Curt Grunewald; and four brothers and four sisters.
Survivors include his children, James (Kathy) Grunewald of Mt. Lake; Tammy (Dominic) Lenoir of Windom; and Patricia Grunewald and Timothy Grunewald, both of Windom; nine grandchildren; his brothers and sisters, Norma Renczykowski of Meadowlands, June Horkey and Ernest (LaRae) Grunewald, all of Windom, Donald Grunewald of Jeffers, Ray (Flossie) Grunewald of Motley and Rich Grunewald of Brainerd.
Alma Vatndal
Alma Vatndal, 97, of Mt. Lake, formerly of Butterfield, died April 30, 2001, at Good Samaritan Village in Mt. Lake.

Esther Swartz of Holdingford, formerly of Jeffers, died April 30, 2001, at West View Terrace in Holdingford.

Leslie Neitzel
Leslie Neitzel, 53, of Maple Grove, formerly of Mankato and Windom, died May 1, 2001, at Dakota Communities on 75th Ave. Care Center in Maple Grove.

William Utterback
William Utterback, 84, of Manly, Iowa, formerly of Windom, died April 30, 2001 at Manly Care Center in Manly.
Services will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m., at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City with Rev. John Gannett officiating.
Interment with military honors provided by Mason City Veterans Memorial Assn., will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.
Visitation will be held Thursday from 3 to 6 p.m., at Bride Colonial Chapel inManly, and Friday for one hour prior to services at church.
Edna Miranowski
Edna Miranowski, 96, of Westbrook, died May 7, 2001, at North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale.
Services were held Friday at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Westbrook with Monsignor Paul Evers officiating.
Special music was provided by Betty Rupp, organist.
Lector was Cleo Miranowski.
Pallbearers were Leonard Eigenberg, Alfred Eigenberg, Gregg Miranowski, Gery Miranowski, Gene Engler, Arlo Engler and Bob Kuehl.
Interment was at Westbrook Cemetery in Westbrook.
Almlie Funeral Home of Westbrook was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
Edna Margaret Kuehl was born Jan. 27, 1905, to Christ and Mary (Jans) Kuehl in Cottonwood County near Westbrook. She was baptized into the Christian faith and received her education at country schools.
In 1927, she married Paul Miranowski at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dundee. They lived and farmed together on a farm near Heron Lake.
In 1973, they retired and moved into Westbrook.
After Paul’s death in 1979, Edna continued to live in Westbrook before spending the last few winters with her son, Bernard, and his wife in Brooklyn Center.
Edna was a past member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Windom and a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Westbrook since 1973. She was a member of the church’s women’s group and served as a Religious Ed teacher.
Her leisure activities included ceramics, gardening, canning, baking, quilt-making and crocheting.
In addition to her husband Paul, Edna was preceded in death by a son, Franklin, in 1977; three brothers, Elmer, Orville and Roy Kuehl; and two sisters, Helen and Mabel.
Survivors include her son, Bernard (Evelyn) Miranowski of Brooklyn Center; six grandchildren; two sisters, Mildred Engler of Windom and Hilma Clifford of Van Nuys, Calif.
Adrian “Pat” Coulson
Adrian “Pat” Coulson, 82, of Comfrey died May 13, 2001, at his home in Comfrey.
Services will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m., at First United Church of Christ in Comfrey with Rev. Jeff Minor officiating.
Interment will follow at Congregational Cemetery in Comfrey.
Visitation will be held Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m., and Friday from 7:30 to 9 a.m., at Sturm Funeral Home in Comfrey. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Adrian “Pat” Coulson was born Feb. 14, 1919, to Bert and Carrie (McCartney) Coulson in Windom. Pat attended and graduated from Jeffers High School in 1938, then worked as a farm hand in the Jeffers area.
In 1941, he joined the U.S. Army, serving most of his military career in the South Pacific during World War II.
He was discharged in 1945 and returned to Windom to purchase a small neighborhood grocery store, which he operated for a year, before working with Bob’s Clothing Store in Windom.
In 1946, he married Beatrice Christensen at the Congregational Church in Comfrey. The couple moved to Comfrey in 1947, where Pat worked as a parts man for Reinhart Farm Service, the Oliver machinery dealer in Comfrey.
In 1951, he began working as a bulk truck driver for Tri-County Coop in Comfrey. He retired in 1984 and Pat and Bea spent time traveling.
Pat was a long-time member of First United Church of Christ in Comfrey and Albin Johnson American Legion Post 244 in Comfrey.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ethel Schopper and Goldie Ison, and a brother, Archie Jass.
Survivors include his wife Bea Coulson of Comfrey; two daughters, Andrea (Russ) Eigen of Annandale and Mary (Bill) Augustin of Buffalo; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a brother, Vivian Coulson of Jackson.
Martha Hallum
Martha Hallum, 84, of Windom, formerly of Heron Lake, died May 13, 2001, at The Cottage Hospice in Luverne.
Services will be held Friday at Amo Lutheran Church, rural Storden, with Rev. Alan Buresh officiating.
Interment will follow at Amo Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Storden.
Visitation will be held Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Anderson-Schmidt Funeral Home in Windom.
Martha Andrena Olson was born May 18, 1916, to Ole Olson and Sadie (Sampson) Olson in Springfield Township of Cottonwood County. She received her education at the Red, White & Blue Schoolhouse in Springfield Township, then helped on the family farm.
In 1944, she married Carroll Hallum at Amo Lutheran Church, rural Storden. They lived in Battle Creek, Mich., for a short time, then returned to Minnesota and began farming in the Heron Lake area.
Martha was employed as a nurse’s aid at Lakeview Home in Heron Lake from 1971 until her retirement in 1981.
She was a lifelong member of Amo Lutheran Church, where she was baptized, confirmed and married. She was active in the WELCA, the church’s women’s group, and enjoyed its quilting ministry.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carroll in 1976.
Survivors include her children, Carl (Anita) Hallum of Adrian and Susan (Eldon) Kolander of Rockton, Ill.; and four grandchildren.
