Christopher L. “Ed” Gagne
Services were held yesterday for Christopher L. “Ed” Gagne, who died Sat., July 22, 2000 at the age of 44 following a long battle with manic-depression.

He was born March 14, 1956 in Duluth to Robert L. and Dorothy (Chapinski) Gagne. He attended St. Rose Catholic School in Proctor and graduated from Proctor High School in 1974. He married Peggy L. St. Marie on Aug. 6, 1994, in Duluth.

He worked for the Duluth Missabe & Iron Range Railway for more than 25 years and was a warehouse foreman. He was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church, the Transportation and Communications International Union, and the DM&IR Veterans Association.

He was an avid fan of the Twins, Vikings, Dukes and the University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs. He had other passions, including painting, matting and framing pictures.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Stan and Gen Chapinski, paternal grandparents Andre and Lumina Gagne, and his brother Matthew Gagne on Feb. 15, 1991.

He is survived by his wife Peggy, a son Nathan of Duluth, his parents Bob and Dorothy Gagne of Proctor, three brothers Mark (friend Mary Jo Jobin) of Proctor, Paul (Marie) of Proctor and Peter (Brenda) of Ankeny, Iowa, a sister Mary Beth Stagner of Eagan, Minn., Nathan’s mother Laurie of Duluth, father-in-law and mother-in-law Ken and Lorraine St. Marie of Duluth, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews, uncles, aunts and cousins. He will be sadly missed by his loving walking companion Sadie.

Burial was in Oneota Cemetery.

Evelyn E. Marsyla
Rudy Nikko is mourning the death of his sister, Evelyn E. Marsyla. She died Thurs., July 13, 2000 in her Kettle River home following an 18-month battle with ovarian cancer. She was 76.

Survivors also include four daughters, six other sisters and brothers, eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and many friends.

Burial was in Holy Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Silver Township.

Estelle Ann Cobb Hernesman
Estelle Ann Cobb Hernesman, who graduated from Proctor High School, died Wed., July 19, 2000 in Itasca Nursing Home in Grand Rapids. She was 92.

She was born and raised in Forbes, Minn, where she attended schools. She married Arvid A. Hernesman in Hibbing, where they lived until 1942. Then they moved to Grand Rapids and bought the Rapids Flour and Feed Mill.

Estelle was a homemaker and was active in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and the Girl Scouts.

She is survived by her daughters Margaret (William) McDonald of Grand Rapids and Etta Martin of Portland, Ore., daughter-in-law Joan Hernesman of Grand Rapids, sisters Margaret O’Neil and Gertrude Sellars, both of Hibbing, Theresa Moline of Duluth and Etta Olson of St. Paul, a brother Peter Cobb of St. George, Utah, 24 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren and ten great-great-grandchildren.

Burial was in Itasca Calvary Cemetery, Grand Rapids.

Joseph “Butch” Skorich
Mildred Bonneville and Marie Baril, both of Proctor, are saddened by the loss of their brother, Joseph “Butch” Skorich. He died Tues., July 18, 2000 in a Duluth hospital. He was 84.

He was born in Duluth. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Normandy invasion. He married Doris Berggren in Duluth and worked for Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railway for 37 years, retiring in 1977.

He is also survived by his wife Doris, two brothers and several in-laws, special nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and nephews.

Burial was in Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Barbara Y. Lundholm
Jeff Lundholm of Pike Lake is mourning the death of his mother, Barbara Y. Lundholm. She died Wed., July 26, 2000 in her Duluth home. She was 65.

She was born and lived her entire life in Duluth. She was a merchandiser for the Gibson Greeting Card Co. She enjoyed knitting, walking with friends and traveling.

Barbara is also survived by a daughter, three grandchildren, three sisters and a brother, and many nieces and nephews.

Norman Alexander McNeil
Norman Alexander McNeil, who was born in Proctor Aug. 3, 1909, died Mon., July 31, 2000 in Chris Jensen Nursing Home. He was 90.

He was born to John Robert and Mary Bell (Walters) McNeil. On July 5, 1929, he married Alice E. Pearson in Virginia and together they raised two sons.

The McNeils lived in Virginia from the 1930’s until 1947. Norman worked as a brakeman and conductor with Duluth Winnipeg & Pacific Railway for more than 30 years until his retirement in 1974. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen (UTU).

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers John and William McNeil, a sister Viola McNeil, a grandson Gerald R. McNeil, and a daughter-in-law Adeline McNeil.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years Alice, two sons Norman R. McNeil of Proctor and Gerald L. (Louise) McNeil of Gordon, three grandchildren Craig (Kristen) McNeil of Duluth, Charmain McNeil of Duluth and Raymond (Denise) McNeil of Proctor, three great-grandchildren Craig G. and Anastazia McNeil of Duluth and Rachel McNeil of Duluth, many cousins, Nieces and nephews and his very special friends Lori McNeil and Todd Huberty of Hermantown.

Visitation from 10 until the 11 a.m. service today (Thursday) in Immanuel Lutheran Church of Proctor. The Rev. Mark A. Osthus officiating. Interment will be in Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Rodger C. Powers
Services were held earlier this week for Rodger C. Powers. He died in his King Manor home, Thurs., Aug. 3, 2000, the day after his birthday. He was 72.

He was born in Grand Forks, N.D. He grew up in Grand Forks, attending area schools and also attended mortuary school in Cincinnati. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and re-enlisted in the Army in 1951, serving in the Korean War for 16 months. He was employed by Northern Pacific Railway as a brakeman for 20 years, retiring in 1969.

He was a member of New Hope Lutheran Church, a volunteer at the Gospel Mission and enjoyed reading adventure novels.

He is survived by his sons Jeffrey of Alexandria, Minn., Eugene of Saginaw, Gerald of Proctor, Jonathon of Duluth and Rodger of Proctor, daughters Virginia Novak and Kathleen Powers, both of Los Angeles and Valerie Larson of Duluth, 19 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, brothers Gene Powers of Grand Forks and Roy Powers of Alabama, and a sister Bonnie Hadland of Bismarck, N.D.

Burial was in Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Albert F. Anderson
Albert F. Anderson, who was born in Proctor in 1919, died Sat., Aug. 5, 2000 at the age of 81.

Albert lived most of his childhood and retirement years in the Superior/Lake Nebagamon area. He was the owner and founder of Anderson Electric in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where he worked from 1959 to 1989. He was a former president of Sundial School in Fort Lauderdale, a former Boy Scout leader, former fishing guide on the Brule River, former member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Lake Nebagamon.

He is survived by four sons, who live in Florida, a daughter of Superior, seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild and a brother Joseph (Kathy) Anderson of Illinois.

Burial was in Pine Ridge Cemetery, Brule.

Edgar H. Skog
Edgar H. Skog, who was born in Solway Township and drove school bus for the Proctor school district, died Sat., Aug. 5, 2000 in Nopeming Nursing Home. He was 87.

He was born in Solway Township to Herman and Selma (Andreason) Skog. He was confirmed in Salem Covenant Church in Duluth and had been a member of Mission Covenant Church in Adolph. He married Magnhild “Munnie” Collander June 20, 1942, in Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Proctor. They lived on the family farm, which they purchased in 1947. He and Munnie farmed and drove truck together until 1964 when his ill health prevented him from continuing to work.

When his parents passed away he became a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, where Munnie has been a member since the age of seven. He was a member of the senior citizen groups at the Lincoln Park (West End) Senior Center and the Esko Senior Center.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Evald, a sister Ruth Winquist, brothers-in-law Emil Winquist and Arthur Erickson, a nephew Donald Erickson and a niece Virginia Erickson Smith.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years Magnhild “Munnie”, children Dr. Laurence (Dr. Judith) of Vienna, Va., Wendy S. (Barry) Worthington of Charleston, S.C., Jeffrey of Munger, Minn. and Julie Anne (Michael) Skog-Johnson of Munger, a sister Elsa Erickson of Fish Lake, Minn., grandchildren Jeremy Skog, Scott and Amy Skog, Brianna Skog Thygeson and Nathan Johnson, many nieces and nephews and many grand-nieces and nephews.

Burial was in the Solway Cemetery.

Harlan H. Onraet
Harlan H. Onraet, who graduated from Proctor High School, died Mon., July 31 in a Duluth hospital. He was 46.

He was born in Duluth and was a self-employed contractor.

Harlan is survived by his son Garrett, daughters Melissa and Nacol of Duluth, his mother Elaine of Hermantown, brothers John (Dina) of Duluth and Timothy (Rita) of Deer River, sisters Lynn (Sherman) Turcott of Duluth, Rachel Onraet of Salt Lake City, Elizabeth Standley of Oliver, Jacqueline (Edward) Brown of Minneapolis and Amy Onraet (Kenneth Johnson) of Duluth, and several nieces and nephews.

Interment was in Sunrise Memorial Park.

Sylvia M. Horvath
Diane Davin of Proctor is mourning the death of her mother, Sylvia M. Horvath. She died Tues., Aug. 1, 2000 at Nopeming Nursing Home. She was 85.

The Meadowlands resident was born in Castlewood, S.D. She spent most of her adult life in Elmer Township caring for her family.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Meadowlands.

She is also survived by her husband Steve, three sons, another daughter, three sisters, five grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Burial was in Rosehill Cemetery, Meadowlands.
