Thomas Shaw
Thomas Shaw of Vinland Street died Mon., Aug. 14, 2000 at Franciscan Health Center. He was 82.

He was born in Duluth to Jule Lowell and Olive (King) Shaw. He was an Army veteran of WW II, serving in the European campaign. He married Edna Olby on May 17, 1946 in Duluth. Tom worked for the DWP railroad for 20 years as a carman and later as a bus driver for the Proctor School District #704, retiring in 1978 after 20 years of service.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Edna in 1995, his brothers Howard and Harold, and sisters Ruby and Lucille.

Survivors include his three sons Thomas (Mary) of Hermantown, Michael (Mary) and Gary (Pat), both of Duluth, four brothers, four sisters, four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Family services will be 11:00 a.m. today, Thursday, at Bell Brothers Chapel. Burial will be in Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Dolores “Dee” M. Lund
A memorial service will be held today (Thursday) for Dolores “Dee” M. Lund of W. Dale Place. She died Tues., Aug. 15, 2000 in St. Mary’s Medical Center.

She was born in Duluth to Oscar and Pearl Moe, attended Munger elementary school and graduated from Proctor Sr. High School. She was employed by Bridgeman Russell, Chun King, Jeno’s and retired from Tyson Foods. She was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church.

She is survived by five daughters, 13 grandchildren, a sister and a brother James Moe of Munger.

The memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. in Johnson Mortuary Chapel. Rev. Carl Palm officiating. Memorials may be directed to St. Mary’s Hospice.

Matthew Leroy “Matt” Maki
Dorothy (Aarre) Suomela of Proctor is saddened by the death of her brother, Matthew Leroy “Matt” Maki. He died Tues., Aug. 1, 2000 at the age of 65.

The Chisholm resident was born at home in Jordan Location east of Chisholm. He attended Chisholm schools and lived in DeKalb, Ill. during his senior year. At 17 he enlisted in the Navy in 1952 serving in the Korean War.

He was associate sculptor on the Iron Ore Miner Memorial Statue erected at the entrance to Ironworld USA.

He is also survived by four sons, two daughters, and seven grandchildren.

He requested cremation and no funeral service.

Karl E. Ruthenbeck
Karl M. Ruthenbeck of Proctor is mourning the death of his father Karl E. Ruthenbeck. He died Sat., Sept. 2, in Duluth at the age of 86.

The Virginia resident was born in Okabena, Minn. He was a graduate of Okabena High School. He received a bachelor’s degree from St. Olaf College and a master’s degree from South Dakota State University. He married Helen Kohl June 12, 1941, in Clinton, Minn. Karl published the Okabena Tribune and was employed by the Polk County Star for two years. In 1938, he bought the Clinton Advocate with brother Alvin and published the Wheaton Gazette. In 1946, he moved to Virginia to teach printing and graphic arts in the Virginia schools until his retirement in 1977. Additionally, Karl worked part-time for the Mesabi Daily News from 1946 until 1977.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Virginia, the Northland Singers, Minn. Education Association and the Virginia Reelers Square Dancers.

Karl is also survived by his wife, a daughter, another son, two sisters, three brothers, six grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Inurnment was in the Greenwood Cemetery, Virginia.

Albin O. Kohs
Services have been held for Albin O. Kohs of Saginaw. He died Tues., Aug. 29, 2000 in a Duluth hospital. He was 90.

The Seville Road resident was born in Saginaw and was a lifelong Saginaw resident and had been an employee of Duluth Winnipeg and Pacific Railway Company for 45 years, retiring Jan. 8, 1975. He married Edna M. Forsell 64 years ago in Duluth.

Survivors include his wife Edna, two sons Kenneth (Betty) of Saginaw and Lyle (Barbara) of Bozeman, Mont., two daughters Janet (Bob) Willeck and Gloria (Chester) Hanson, both of Saginaw, a sister Minnie of New York, 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Burial was in Sunrise Memorial Park.

Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

James R. Cox
Jane E. Anderson of Pike Lake is saddened by the death of her brother James R. Cox. He died Thurs., Aug. 31 in a Duluth hospital. He was 76.

He was born in Duluth. He was a 1942 graduate of Lakewood High School. He began his 32-year career as a roofer before moving to Seattle in 1967, where he worked for three and one- half years for the Boeing Corporation during the construction of the first 747s. He returned to Duluth in 1970 and resumed his career as a roofer. He was a member of the Roofers Union Local 96; the Cloquet Moose Lodge 1274; AARP and the Senior Coalition. He was a former member of Pike Lake Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder.

He is also survived by his wife Lois, three stepdaughters, five stepsons, more than 45 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, several cousins, many dear friends and his loyal companion, Lucky.

Burial was in Sunrise Memorial Park.

Franklin Young
Military honors were accorded Franklin Young when he was laid to rest over the weekend. He died Wed., Sept. 6, 2000 in a Duluth hospital. He was 72.

He was born in Stark, Fla. and had lived in the Proctor area since 1967. He was a senior master sergeant in the Air Force, retiring in 1972 after 26 years. He had served in many countries around the world including Korea and Vietnam.

He was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church in Proctor and the Retired Enlisted Association.

He was preceded in death by his wife Marguerite in 1997.

Franklin is survived by his son Andrew F. (Kathleen) of Hanford, Calif., a sister Jackie Stokes of Floral City, Fla. and grandchildren Ashten and Noah.

Burial was in Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Lee E. Hurley
John Unger of Midway is saddened by the death of his sister, Lee E. Hurley. She died Tues., Aug. 8 in her Coleraine home. She was 88.

She was born in Grand Rapids. She was a lifelong resident of Itasca County and a graduate of Greenway High School, Coleraine.

Lee and Bryan had owned and operated grocery stores in Lawrence Lake and Taconite and with her brother John. Lee had owned and operated the Hi-Style Beauty Salon in Grand Rapids for 15 years.

She is also survived by two daughters, six grandchildren, another brother and a sister.

Interment was in Itasca-Calvary Cemetery, Grand Rapids.

Agnes Irene Kuhlmey
Agnes Irene Kuhlmey, who had lived in Proctor since 1945, died Thurs., Sept. 7, 2000 in a Duluth hospital. She was 88.

She was born in Queen Township in rural Fosston, Minn. She attended “Lone Pine”, a one-room log school, and Fosston High School. She had worked for the DMIR and the Universal Match Factory. She married Arthur J. Kuhlmey on Nov. 29, 1947. She was a homemaker, who loved flowers and gardening. She was a member of Duluth Gospel Tabernacle.

She was preceded in death by her parents, seven sisters, three brothers, her husband Arthur and her son Gregory A.

She is survived by a grandson Philip Kuhlmey of Kent, Wash., sisters Alice Erickson of Proctor and Bertha Ongstad of Portland, Ore., a brother Hommer (Connie) Lee of Portland, a daughter-in-law Shirley Kuhlmey of Federal Way, Wash. and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Burial was in Oneota Cemetery. Memorials preferred to Duluth Gospel Tabernacle Mission Fund. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Dorothy Mae Helmin
Services were held earlier this week for Dorothy Mae Helmin of Saginaw. The former Proctor resident died Thurs., Sept. 7, 2000 in her home. She was 64.

Dorothy married Marcell Helmin in Foley, Minn., in 1953. She enjoyed teaching religious classes at St. Raphael’s Catholic Church.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her father Joseph and stepfather Lester Solt.

She is survived by her husband Marcell, children Julie White of Minneapolis, Marcell, Jr. of Texas and Shannon (Randy) Swanson of Harris, Minn., grandchildren Christian White and Joshua, Jessica, Matthew and Mike Swanson, her mother Harriet Solt, sisters Delphine Norell of Florida and Doris Orvis of Pine City, Minn. and many nieces and nephews.

Interment was in Solway Township Cemetery.

Eigil Pedersen, 86,of Sleepy Eye, died on Friday, March 26, 2004, at Sleepy Eye Hospital in Sleepy Eye, Minn.
Service will be held at Faith United Methodist Church in Sleepy Eye on Tuesday, March 30, at 10:30 a.m. The clergy will be Pastor Donn Rakow. Interment will be at Home Cemetery in Sleepy Eye.
Visitation will be on Monday, March 29, from 4:-8 p.m., and on Tuesday from 7:30-8:30 a.m. at the Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye. Visitation will continue 9:30-10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church.

Memorials are preferred to the Sleepy Eye Hospital and the Faith United Methodist Church in Sleepy Eye.
Eigil "Pete" Pedersen was born February 16, 1918 in Lake Benton, MN, the son of Barthold and Dora Pedersen. Eigil attended grade school and high school at Arco, Minn. He continued to work in the Arco area for a while and on June 28, 1941 he married Marvelyn Welsand at English Lutheran Church in Arco. Their children are James, who lives in Chaska, Minn. and Danny, who lives in Memphis, Tenn.. After Eigil served with the Military in Europe, they came to Sleepy Eye and he was hired by Al Beech. He worked at Beech Electric from 1945 to 1971 as a licensed electrician and refrigeration service man. In 1972 he established his own refrigeration business known as Pedersen's Service and continued working through retirement. He was actively involved with the community by holding a number of offices in the Faith United Methodist Church. He was a 20-year member of the Sleepy Eye Utilities Commission, a lifetime member of the American Legion and VFW. He was involved in the Keystone Masonic Lodge and also a member of Eastern Star. His pleasures included gardening and raising roses, plus spending time in his workshop.
He is survived by her wife of 63 years, Marvelyn of Sleepy Eye; sons, James and his wife Susan of Chaska and Danny and his wife Saundra of Memphis, TN; a sister, Vivian of Tyler, MN; grandchildren, Ryan and Erik; two great-grandchildren; and many friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents Barthold and Dora Pedersen; in-laws, Otto and Mary Welsand; brothers-in-law, Carl Pedersen, Ronald Van Stelten; and Ernst Hansen. Eigil enjoyed life and always found time for being with friends and family.

Henry (Hank) William Stoks Mass of Christian Burial for Henry (Hank) William Stoks, 83, of Minneota, Minn., will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 30, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Marshall.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m., Monday, at Rehkamp-Horvath Funeral Home in Marshall with a CCW rosary at 4 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue Tuesday from 8:30-10 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Cemetery in Taunton, Minn.
Henry is survived by his wife, Marie, of Marshall, children and spouses, Shirley and Roger Przybys of Marshall, Ken and Jody Stoks of Apache Junction, Ariz., Tom and Diane Stoks of Sleepy Eye, Mike and Danette Stoks of Marshall, Joann and Mark Evjen of Dawson, and Dennis and Pam Stoks of Norwood Young America; and 14 grandchildren:

Elvira Loftness, 92, of 106 East 12th Street in Gibbon, died Sunday, March 28, 2004 at the Fairfax Community Home in Fairfax.
A graveside committal service will be held at a later date. There will be no visitation or reviewal.
Minnesota Valley Funeral Home of Gibbon is in charge of the arrangements.
Elvira is survived by her sisters and brother-in-law, Irene Carson of Minneapolis, Elaine and Dr. Donald Mason of Novato, California; brothers and sister-in-law, Melvin Wichelman of St. Cloud, Dr. Delbert and Betty Jane Wichelman of Oakland, California; daughter-in-law, Terry Fitzgerald Sieck and her husband, Larry of San Diego, California; stepson, James Loftness and his wife, Rita of Battle Lake; stepdaughter, Suzanne Gilman and her husband, John of Green Bay, Wisconsin; nieces; nephews; and friends.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Leo Fitzgerald; second husband, Gerhard Loftness; a son, Dr. Ronald Fitzgerald; and sisters, Lenora Kelly, and Corrine Hess.

Janice Mae Buggert, 68, of Mesa, Ariz., died Tuesday, March 30, 2004, at her home, of cancer.
She is survived by her husband Fremont Buggert; son, Danny Buggert of St Peter, Minn.; daughter, Kari Buggert of Mesa, Ariz.; her mother, Jocelyn Zieske/Sasse of Sleepy Eye, Minn.; sisters, Betty Trebiesch and Marion Rolloff of New Ulm, Minn.; and three grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
She was born May 1, 1935, in Redwood County, Minn., to Fredrick and Jocelyn Zieske
