Florence Franta, 90, of 300 North Broadway, New Ulm, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001 at the New Ulm Medical Center in New Ulm.
Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. George Catholic Church in West Newton Township, Nicollet County, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Tuesday and 7:30-10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. A combined rosary will be prayed at 6:30 p.m. by the St. Cecilia Court of the National Catholic Society of Foresters and the St. George Catholic Aid Society, and there will be a parish prayer service at 7:30 p.m., both Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
Florence is survived by a daughter, Marlys Schlumpberger of New Ulm; a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Dianne Franta of rural New Ulm; six grandchildren; four great grandchildren; by a sister, Gladys Ries a resident of the Divine Providence Community Home in Sleepy Eye; and a brother and sister-in-law, Hugo "Steve" and Marcie Reinhart of Rochester.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edwin Franta on May 1, 1960; by three brothers, Alvin, LeRoy, and Robert Reinhart; and also by a son-in-law, Jim Schlumpberger on Nov. 20, 2000.
Florence was born Dec. 21, 1910 in New Ulm to Robert J. and Dora (Dauer) Reinhart. She attended country school in Lafayette Township, Nicollet County and later the Holy Trinity School in New Ulm. On Sept. 25, 1934 she married Edwin Franta at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm. After marriage they farmed in West Newton Township, Nicollet County, Florence continued to farm until 1970. She then work in the Deli Department at the Randall Value Center in New Ulm for several years. In 1990 she moved to the Broadway Haus. Florence was a member of the St. George Catholic Church and a member of the altar society, the St. Cecilia Court of the National Catholic Society of Foresters where she held the office of president for 42 years, the St. George Catholic Aid Society, and the Golden Age Club.

Darrel W. Benson, 74, of Fairfax, died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at Fairfax Community Home.
Services are 11 a.m. Monday at United Methodist Church in Fairfax, with burial with full military rites by the Fairfax Honor Guard, in Ft. Ridgely Cemetery, Ridgely Township, Nicollet County.
Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Sunday and 7:30 -8:30 a.m. on Monday at Hauser-Hantge Funeral Chapel, Fairfax. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church Monday.

Frederick E. Bode, 63, of Litchfield Township, Meeker County, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at his home.
Services are 11 a.m. today at Zion Lutheran Church, Litchfield, with burial at a later date.
Visitation is one hour prior to services at the church.
Johnson-Hagglund Funeral Home, Litchfield, was in charge of arrangements.
He is survived by his wife Karen; sons and daughter-in-law, Shawn and wife Kelly Goeb of Moose Lake, and Shannon of Glenwood; two grandchildren; mother, Minnie of Courtland; brother, Waldemar of Searles; sisters and brothers-in-law, Elizabeth and Stuart Firnhaber of Murrieta, Calif., and Naomi and Lloyd Voges of Courtland; father-in-law, Elvoin Kamrath; brother-in-law, Gary and wife Teeny Kamrath; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Edwin; and nephew, Mike Bode.
He was born Oct. 30, 1937, in Courtland Township, Nicollet County, to Edwin and Minnie (Sperl) Bode. He played trumpet and harmonica with Country Dutchmen. He married Karen Kamruth on June 24, 1964, in Courtland. They lived in Courtland until 1970, when they moved to Litchfield. In 1992 they moved to Star Lake.

Orville Raddatz, 69, of Morgan, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at Springfield Hospital.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Morgan, with burial in the Redwood Falls Cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today at Redwood Valley Funeral Home, Redwood Falls.
He is survived by his wife, Myrtle; daughters and sons-in-law, Beverly and Bob Hoffbeck of Clements, Evelyn and Delwin Junker of Comfrey, Marilyn and Ben Williams of Overland Park, Kansas, Karen and Quint Dooley of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Carol and Dave Roberts of Aurora, Colo.; 15 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and sisters and brother-in-law, Elviera Raddatz, and Elaine and Melvin Just.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He was born Jan. 12, 1931, in Redwood Township, to Otto and Clara (Ott) Raddatz. He married Myrtle Kuehn on Aug. 17, 1952, in Vesta. The couple lived on the family farm. In January 1992 they moved to Morgan. He served on the District 63 school board; taught Sunday school for several years, and served on the church council at Bethany Lutheran Church, Wabasso. He was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Morgan. He was the founder of the Haymakers, an old-time dance band. He played concertina.

Donald J. Soukup, 59, of Morristown, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at Hennepin County Medical Center, Minneapolis.
Mass of Christian burial is 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Faribault, with burial in Meadow Ridge Memorial Park, Faribault.
Visitation is 11:30 a.m. Saturday until the time of services at the church.
Parker Kohl Funeral Home, Faribault is in charge of arrangements.
He is survived by his fiancee, Alice Seibel, of Morristown; children, Joseph of Faribault and Constance Soukup of Duluth; grandson Dustin; brothers and sisters-in-law, Tim and Lena of Olivia, and Joe and Jean of Sleepy Eye; sisters and brothers-in-law, Pat and Fritz Reddy of Burnsville, Joyce Schwartz of New Ulm, Louise Forster of Sleepy Eye, Mary Lu and Jim Schwartz of New Ulm, Sylvia Ruiz of New Ulm, and Rosie and Gordy Carlson of Richfield; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He was born Nov. 25, 1941, in Sleepy Eye, to Sylvester and Constance (Sensac) Soukup. He worked as a custodian at various companies, including Martin Luther College.

Erna August Toren, 93, of Franklin, formerly of Palmyra Township, Renville County, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at Franklin Healthcare Center.
Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at Swedlanda Lutheran Church, Palmyra Township, Renville County, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today and 7:30-8 a.m. Saturday at Hauser-Hantge Funeral Chapel, Fairfax. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church Saturday.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Jean Toren of Franklin; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Lauretta Marlowe of Fairfax and Gertrude Drusch of Aberdeen, S.D.; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Rudolph A. Toren in March 1992; son, John Toren on June 4, 1992; brothers, Otto, Ferdinand, Robert, Elmer and Henry Drusch; sisters, Rose and Ruby, and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
She was born Dec. 18, 1907, in Eden Township, Brown County, to Albert and Anna (Muenchow) Drusch. She married Rudolph A. Toren on April 5, 1943 at the Lutheran Church in Eden Township, Brown County. They lived in Bandon Township and Palmyra Township, Renville County. She lived on the farmsite until she entered the Franklin Healthcare Center on Nov. 5, 1997.
She was a longtime member of Swedlanda Lutheran Church where she was active in the Ladies' Aid.

Darrel W. Benson, 74, of Fairfax, died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at Fairfax Community Home.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at United Methodist Church, Fairfax, with burial in Fort Ridgely Cemetery with full military rites by the Fairfax Honor Guard.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Sunday and 7:30-8:30 a.m. Monday at Hauser-Hantge Funeral Chapel, Fairfax and at the church Monday, one hour prior to the service.
Memorials are preferred to the Alzheimer's Foundation.
He is survived by his wife, Anna, of Fairfax; son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Young of Bossier City, La.; daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Thomas Lyngholm of Apple Valley, Joy and Jim Evenson of Gibbon and Lea Anne Gapstur of Williamsburg, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; a great grandson; sister-in-law, Dorothy Benson of Mesa Ariz.; a niece, Joan Herr of Lebanon, Pa. and relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, James; and a brother, Frederick.
He was born July 11, 1926, in Estherville, Iowa to John and Harriet (Wratten) Benson. He graduated from Dawson High School in 1944. He entered the U.S. Army on June 21, 1945. He served with the 3505th AAF base in World War II. He was discharged on Nov. 13, 1946. He married Anna Marie Byrne on April 10, 1950, in Moorland, Iowa. He worked as a depot agent for the railroad in Terril, Iowa; Winthrop and Fairfax. They lived in Mesa, Ariz., and Spirit Lake, Iowa, before moving back to Fairfax in 1998. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last April. He entered Fairfax Community Home last August. He belonged to United Methodist Church, Fairfax; the American Legion Club and was a volunteer firefighter in Iowa.

Raymond Holtz, 79, of Stewart died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001.
Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Stewart, with spring burial in the Stewart City Cemetery.
Arrangements are with Hughes Funeral Home, Hector.

Della Hopman, 95, formerly of Sunset Apartments in New Ulm, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at Fairfax Community Home in Fairfax.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm with burial in the Lutheran Cemetery in New Ulm.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Sunday and 7:30 - 8:30 a.m. Monday at Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm, and will continue for one hour prior services at church.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and Duane Bode of New Ulm; a son and daughter-in-law, James and Dorothy Hopman of Red Wing; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one great great-granddaughter; a sister, Marie Wendt of Rhinelander, Wis.; sisters-in-law, Erma Wacker and Alice Erickson, both of New Ulm; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Albert Hopman; a granddaughter, Linda Hopman; five sisters and six brothers.
She was born Aug. 9, 1905, in St. James, daughter to Henry and Marie (Habel) Wacker.
She married Albert Hopman Nov. 26, 1926, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in St. James. They moved to Elgin, Ill., where she worked for the Elgin Watch Company. They returned to Minnesota in 1928 and lived and worked in Butterfield, St. James and Ormsby. They moved to New Ulm in 1951, where she worked at Woolworth's and then at Dr. Martin Luther College in the Library until she retired. She was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm and the Ladies Aid at church.

Jerome Hanson, 79, of Lake Crystal, and formerly of Hanska and Madelia, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at Lake Crystal Health Care Center.
Services are 11 a.m Wednesday, at Zion Lutheran Church in Hanska with burial in the New Ulm City Cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Firle Funeral Home in Hanska and continues one hour before the service at the church. A Mason service is 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Duane "Bud" Richter, 66, of 909 3rd North St. in New Ulm died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at his home.
Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm with burial in the Lutheran Cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Tuesday and 7:30-8:30 a.m. on Wednesday at Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm and one hour before the service Wednesday at the church
He is survived by his wife, Virginia "Mickey" Richter of New Ulm; daughters-and sons-in-law, Becky and Mike Groebner of New Ulm, Georgia "Joie" May of Eden Prairie, Sherry and Jeff Rose of New Ulm, and Shelly Berg of New Ulm; grandchildren, Bryan Drahota, Brandon Drahota, Mandi Ahlbrecht, and Chuck Ahlbrecht III; mother, Hilda Richter of New Ulm; and brothers and sister-in-law, Craig "Sonny" and Denise Richter of New Ulm, and Lee Minnick of Engelwood, Colo.
He was preceded in death by his father, John "Hans" Richter, Jr.; and grandson, Wesley Drahota.
He was born June 3, 1934, in New Ulm to John "Hans" Jr. and Hilda (Cordes) Richter. He attended St. Paul's Lutheran School in New Ulm and graduated from New Ulm Public High School. On Aug. 21, 1954 he married Virginia "Mickey" Liebl at the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm. He had worked for the New Ulm Theatre, then the Wearwell Garment Factory, and for Kemske Paper Company. He retired in in 1996. He was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, New Ulm Bowling Council, New Ulm Bowling Association, New Ulm Baseball Association. He was inducted into the Bowling Hall of Fame and the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Mabel Johanna Sandau, 93, of 715 S. German St., New Ulm, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at Ebenezer Luther Hall in Minneapolis.
Services are 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m.today and 7:30-10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Firle Funeral Home in New Ulm, and continues one hour prior to the services at the church.
She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Carrol Tammen of Hastings, Betty and Robert Helmen of Minneapolis; son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Julie Sandau of New Ulm; son-in-law, Albert Thiesfeld of Waconia; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; brother, Walden and his wife Ellen Holmgren of Los Angeles, Calif., and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar in 1987; daughter, Donna Thiesfeld; brothers Algot, Andrew, Elmer and Victor Holmgren; and sisters, Pauline Pohl, Hilvina Peterson, Cecelia Kent and Alma Peterson.
She was born Feb. 4, 1907, to Andrew and Emma (Swanson) Holmgren in Mankato. She spent her youth in Blue Earth County and attended country school.
She married Oscar Sandau on Aug. 16, 1928, at Grace Lutheran Church parsonage in Mankato. They lived in New Ulm. She worked as a licensed beautician in Mankato and New Ulm and was later employed by the New Ulm garment factory, Pink's Department Store, and Muesing Drug. She moved to Ridgeway on German in January 1999 and became a resident of the Ebenezer Luther Hall in Minneapolis in December 1999. She was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm.
Memorials are preferred to the donor's choice.

Jerome Hanson, 79, of Lake Crystal, formerly of Hanska and Madelia, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at Lake Crystal Health Care Center.
Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Zion Lutheran Church, Hanska, with burial in New Ulm City Cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today at Firle Funeral Home, Hanska, and one hour prior to services at the church. A Masonic service is 7:30 p.m. today at Firle Funeral Home, Hanska.
He is survived by his aunt, Delores Koske of Milwaukee, Wis.; stepson and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Jeanne Brudelie of Hanska; stepdaughter, Edythe Dankert of Minneapolis; two stepgrandsons; a stepgreat-grandson; a brother-in-law and his wife, Wallace and Joyce Hetle of Madelia; and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Adeline; and step son-in-law, Ron Dankert.
He was born March 12, 1921, in Linden Township, Brown County, to Henry and Alvina (Lodes) Hanson. He graduated from New Ulm High School in 1939. He married Adeline Brudelie on July 3, 1963, in Linden Township. They farmed in Linden Township until retiring in 1984. They lived in Madelia until Adeline died in 1999. He moved to the Lake Crystal Health Care Center in November 2000. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Hanska and Charity Lodge 98 A.F. & A.M. He was a 50-year member of the Masons.
Memorials are preferred to Charity Lodge 98 A.F. & A.M. or the Shriner's Hospital for Crippled Children.
