Helen C. Jobin
Larry Jobin is mourning the death of his mother, Helen C. Jobin. She died Tues., Oct. 10, 2000 in her daughter Roberta’s home. She was 85.

She was born in Duluth. She married Raymond J. Jobin in 1939 in Duluth.

She was employed at Woolworth’s, the Peking Inn and National Foods. She was a meat cutter and wrapper at Gershgol’s Market for many years and worked at Red Owl prior to her retirement.

She was a volunteer at the West Duluth Senior Center, where she served meals. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church and its St. Margaret’s Guild, the Women of the Moose in West Duluth, the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 1116 and the Walking Club at the West Duluth Senior Center.

She is also survived by another daughter, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.

Evelyn M. Wagner
Lloyd Wagner of Twig and Susan Newman of Munger are mourning the death of their mother, Evelyn M. Wagner. She died Sun., Oct. 22, 2000 in Nopeming Nursing Home of Alzheimer’s disease at the age of 74.

She was born in Duluth and lived in Hermantown most of her life, marrying Bud Wagner in 1948. She graduated from Denfeld High School and worked at Marshall Wells Co. for eight years as a billing-machine operator. After raising her family, she worked at Chris Jensen Nursing Home as a clerk typist for 12 years.

During World War II days, she knitted many pairs of mittens for “Bundles for Britain”. Evelyn was a member of the Hermantown Community Church.

She is also survived by her husband Bud, another daughter, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Interment was in Hermantown Cemetery.

RoseMarie Ginter
RoseMarie Ginter had a dream of replicating her parents’ general store, which they lost in the Depression, in the old Proctor Bank Building. Poor health thwarted her success in Proctor and on Mon., Nov. 13, 2000 she died. She was 69.

Ginter, a Hermantown resident, was always optimistic about her project and Proctor. Born in North Prairie, MN, she began her teaching career at 19 in a one-room school house. She received a special education degree from University of Minnesota, Duluth in 1971 and taught in the Hermantown Public School for more than 20 years. She was married to Joyce Aleshire from 1950 to 1975.

Rose loved geography and politics, thus her enthusiasm for the Nov. 7 election kept her going a bit longer. She was thrilled to have shook hands with Bill Clinton. She also attended a dinner for Hillary Clinton and met Al Gore and Bob Dole. She was a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa sorority, which is known for its philanthropy, since 1980.

Rose is survived by seven children and their partners, seven siblings, 15 grandchildren, a great-grandchild and nieces and nephews.

Visitation will take place 5:30 to 8 p.m. Fri., Nov. 17, with wake prayers at 7 p.m., and also 9 a.m. until the 10 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Saturday at St. Lawrence Catholic Church. Entombment will be in Sunrise Memorial Park. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Betty J. Erickson Berg
Services were held for Betty J. Erickson Berg. She died Mon., Nov. 6, 2000 in Nopeming. She was 67.

Berg, who made her home on Proctor’s Fifth Street, was a lifelong area resident.

She had worked in the dress department in Glass Block downtown. She married Donald C. Berg on Valentine’s Day in 1950, and they were married for 42 years. Donald died in 1992. Her parents were Arvid and Margaret Rose Berg.

She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Proctor.

Betty is survived by her children Linda (Steve) Olcott and Donald A. (Julie) Berg, all of Duluth and Gerald C. (Sue Leonard) Berg of Crosby; grandchildren Todd, Brian and Michael Olcott, Wendy Berg and Rebecca and Amanda Berg and many other loving family and friends.

Burial was in Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Holly Louise Johnson
Cynthia Johnson of Proctor is saddened by the death of her sister Holly Louise Johnson. She died Sat., Nov. 11, 2000 at the age of 41.

The Superior resident attended school in Eveleth and Aurora-Hoyt Lakes, where she graduated. She also attended Wisconsin Indian head Technical College in Superior and the University of Wisconsin-Stout, where she graduated with honors in December of 1999.

She is also survived by her parents Donald and Jeanette Johnson, a brother, a niece, a stepdaughter, two stepbrothers, and a stepsister.

A memorial service will be held Fri., Nov. 17, in Zion Lutheran Church, Superior.

Kenneth Warren Peterson
Kenneth Warren Peterson, who was born in Proctor, lost his battle with cancer Sat., Nov. 11, 2000. He died in his Duluth home at the age of 74.

He worked for the Duluth school system as a painter for many years. He was an active member of the Hunters Park Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses for more than 45 years.

He is survived by his wife Marie, his sisters Edna Mattson of Duluth and Ruth Campbell of Chubbeck, Idaho, his brother Earl Peterson of Port Richie, Fla., children Dale, Ray, Michael and Janine, grandchildren Candice and Lisa Johnson, Rachel Kreitz, and Jeremy, Nathan, Benjamin, Ryan and Kelly Peterson and great-grandchild Belamie Peterson.

A memorial talk will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sat., Nov. 18, in the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 4602 W. Arrowhead Road, Duluth.

Keith L. Dayton
Teresa Ritchie of Saginaw is mourning the death of her father Keith L. Dayton. He died Mon., Nov. 13, 2000 in Nopeming Nursing Home. He was 54.

The former Hoyt Lakes and Cloquet resident was born in Mobridge, SD. Keith moved from South Dakota to Hinckley as a young child and graduated from Hinckley High School in 1964. He worked on his parents’ farm in Hinckley until 1966, when he moved to Cloquet and worked at Diamond Brands from 1966 to 1971 and then Erie Mining (LTV Steel Co.) in Hoyt Lakes, until he retired for medical reasons in 1999.

Keith is also survived by his wife Margaret “Billie”, two other children, three granddaughters, three sisters, his stepfather and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Visitation today, Thursday, from 9 a.m. until the 10 a.m. service in Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th St., Cloquet. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Carlton.

Morris F. “Mike” Meier
Services were held earlier this week for Morris F. “Mike” Meier, Jr. He succumbed to cancer Sat., Nov. 18, 2000 in his Vinland Street home following a two-year battle. He was 73.

Mike was born in Duluth and had graduated from Denfeld High School in 1945. He married Dolores Lund in Duluth on Aug. 28, 1954.

He served in the Navy and worked as the Grassy Point Draw Bridge operator for the Burlington Northern Railroad, the former Northern Pacific Railroad, and retired in 1988 after working for over 40 years.

Mike was a popular area guitarist and entertained people for 50 years. His first band, “The Melody Mates”, played at the CIO Steelworkers Hall weekly for seven years. After forming the “Mike Meier Band” he entertained at the former Highland Supper Club for eight years. He also played at numerous weddings, clubs and nursing homes.

He was a member of Elim Lutheran Church and served on the church council. He served as Cub master for the Proctor Pack at Forbes United Methodist Church, and also served on the Proctor Village Council. He was a member of Euclid Masonic Lodge 198 AF&AM, Scottish Rite-Valley of Duluth, Aad Temple Shrine and the Shrine Band. He also belonged to the West Duluth American Legion Post 71, West Duluth VFW, National Association of Retired Veterans Employees and Hanging Horn Lake Association.

Mike is survived by his wife Dolores, sons Michael C. and Mark S., both of Duluth, daughters Mary (Keith) Carlson of Moose Lake, Marcia (Michael) Bauman of Monticello, Minn. and Dr. Melanie Meier of Duluth, and grandchildren Matthew Monette of Duluth and William and Michaela Bauman of Monticello.

Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Marion Gusa
Martha Jonland is mourning the death of her mother, Marion Gusa. She died in Hermantown Thurs., Nov. 2, 2000 at the age of 75.

Marion Lucille Backlund was born in Holt. She grew up in Holt and graduated from Newfolden High School in 1943. For a brief time, she worked at Ben Franklin in Thief River Falls.

Marion married Raymond Gusa in 1943. Since their marriage, the couple had lived and farmed in Spruce Valley township of Marshall County near Middle River.

Marion was a long-time member of First Lutheran Church where she was active in Sunday school, Lutheran League, Ladies Aide, quilting and serving as a church delegate. In 1996, she was named Outstanding Senior Citizen for the State of Minnesota. She served on the Marshall Country Group Homes board of directors and as vice president of the board of directors of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). Marion was president and secretary of the Marshall County Council on Aging and president and vice president of the Northwest Chapter of the Minnesota Senior Federation. She was vice president of Branch 8129 of Lutheran Brotherhood and was a Lutheran Brotherhood fraternal leader at First Lutheran Church in Middle River. She was president of the Holt Keenagers senior citizens group and was also a member of the Middle River Seniors and Middle River Community Club.

Survivors also include her husband Ray, a son, four other daughters, 18 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, a brother, and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Interment was in First Lutheran Cemetery in Middle River.

James W. Zembo
Cindy Jorgenson of Proctor is mourning the death of her father James W. Zembo. He died Sun., Nov. 19, 2000 in Foxboro.

He is also survived by his wife Nancy, another daughter Carrie Kent, a son Scott, brothers Jack and Robert, a special uncle Frank Zembo and grandchildren Nicole, Krista, James, Aaron, Alex, Alan and Rachael.

Service will be 11 a.m. Friday in Downs Funeral Home, Superior.
