Minnie Sperl, 88, of rural Comfrey, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at St. John Lutheran Home, Springfield.
Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye, with burial in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Sleepy Eye.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today and 9-11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
She is survived by her sister, Arlene Cook, of rural Comfrey; cousins, Donald "Duke" Cook of rural Comfrey, Mel and Marie Cook of rural Comfrey, Ivona Helget of New Ulm, Leon Schwartz, of Summit, S.D. and Bertha Green of Sleepy Eye.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Bernard, in 1974.
She was born Aug. 8, 1912, in Mulligan Township, Brown County, Minnesota to Harry and Mary (Nowak) Cook. She attended District 42 country school in Brown County. She married Bernard Sperl on Nov. 2, 1931, in Sleepy Eye. They farmed for many years in Mulligan Township. After her husband died, she lived with her sister on the farm until moving to the St. John Home in Springfield in February 2000.

Alvin Huls, 71, of Hector, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at the Renville County Hospital, Olivia.
Services are 2 p.m. Monday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hector, with burial in the Hector City Cemetery.
Visitation is 1-4 p.m. Sunday at Hughes Funeral Home, Hector, and one hour prior to services at the church.
He is survived by his sons and daughter-in-law, Curtis and LuAnn of Glencoe, and Rick and fiancee Tammy Grejtak of Hector; four grandchildren; mother, Mathilda, of Hutchinson; brothers and sisters-in-law, Rudy and Marjorie of Hutchinson, Wally and Ruby of Buffalo Lake, and Ellsworth and Phyllis of Buffalo Lake; sister and brother-in-law, Lois and Delbert Ufkes of Hector; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, George, and his wife, Marjorie.
He was born Nov. 6, 1929, in Worthington, to George and Mathilda (Wiechman) Huls. He married Marjorie Nenow on April 15, 1952, in Hector. He worked for several farmers in the area, and in 1965 he purchased land southeast of Hector and farmed.

Ernest J. 'Ernie' Herriges, 95, of 1008 S. Broadway in New Ulm, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at the Divine Providence Home in Sleepy Eye.
Mass of Christian burial is 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm with burial in the Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation is 10 a.m. until time of service at the church.
Minnesota Valley Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Eileen Herriges, a resident of the Divine Providence Home in Sleepy Eye; daughter and son-in-law, Rita and Dale Benson of Mazeppa; grandchildren, Jill Erwin of Vancouver, Wash., Matthew Erwin of Rochester, Brian Erwin of Zumbrota, Lynnsey Benson of Mazeppa; great-grandchildren, Michael, Gabriel and Nathaniel Erwin; and sister, Agatha Swanson of Seattle, Wash.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters and seven brothers.
He was born on Aug. 21, 1905, in Madison to Gerhard and Louise (Vetter) Herriges. He married Eileen O'Malley on Sept. 3, 1935, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm. They lived in New Ulm. He worked at various jobs in New Ulm and since 1946 he owned and operated a real estate and general insurance company in New Ulm. He was past president of the Izaak Walton League, the Swan Lake Preservation & Improvement Association, and the Minnesota River Watershed Association. He served as secretary and manager of the Brown County Fair for 23 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus 1076 in New Ulm where he was a past Grand Knight, past Faithful Navigator - Fourth Degree and past National Delegate. He was active in many other organizations and clubs. He belonged to St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm where he served on the finance committee and was an usher for more than 40 years.
In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials be given to the donor's choice.

Lauretta M. Johnson, 78, of Fairfax, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at the Fairfax Community Home.
Mass of Christian burial is 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Fairfax with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Sunday and 7:30-8 a.m. Monday at Hauser-Hantge Funeral Chapel in Fairfax; and continue one hour before services Monday at the church. There will be a parish prayer service at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral chapel.

Geraldine Petersen, 90, of Redwood Falls, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at Redwood Area Hospital, Redwood Falls.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Redwood Falls, with burial in Redwood Falls Cemetery.
Visitation is 3-5 p.m. Sunday at Nelson Funeral Home, Redwood Falls, and will continue one hour prior to services Monday at the church.
She is survived by sons, James and wife Veronika of Rosemount, William and wife Sharon of Redwood Falls Robert and wife Marilyn of Carson City, Nev.; daughter, Mae Ann Petersen and husband Serge Pare' of Delhi; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ervin; son, Joseph; four brothers; and four sisters.
She was born on Nov. 1, 1920, in Redwood County, to Hurbert and Elizabeth (Hunting) Stitz. She lived with her family in Redwood County and attended Redwood Falls Schools. She married Ervin Petersen on Sept. 23, 1939. They lived in Redwood Falls until 1973, when they moved to Alexandria. She moved back to Redwood Falls in 1992. She was a nursing assistant at Redwood Falls Hospital for 17 years, retiring in 1973. She was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church and the V.F.W. Auxiliary.

Elmer 'Spike' Nehls, 87, of Las Vegas, formerly of New Ulm, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at his daughter's home in Las Vegas.
A combined memorial service will be held for him and his wife in New Ulm at a later date, following his wife's death.
Firle Funeral Home of New Ulm is handling the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Nehls, of Las Vegas; son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Nancy of Palitine, Ill.; daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Charles Stoltzman of Janesville, and Patricia and Richard Heymann of Las Vegas; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Dorothy Ibberson of Sleepy Eye; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Norman; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
He was born Feb. 22, 1913, in New Ulm, to John and Amanda (Schlumpberger) Nehls. He attended St. Louis School of Nursing in St. Louis, Mo. He married Dorothy Belland on June 9, 1938, in New Ulm. They lived in Marshall and Waseca before moving to New Ulm, where he worked for Waseca Mutual Insurance Company. They lived in Las Vegas for the past 10 years. He belonged to St. Peter's Episcopal Church in New Ulm; Charity Lodge 98 A.F. & A.M. of New Ulm, the Zuhrah Shrine Temple in Minneapolis, New Ulm Toastmasters and many other local civic organizations.

Viola Glaeser, 91, a resident of the Winthrop Good Samaritan Center, Winthrop, formerly of Moltke Township, Sibley County, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at the Winthrop Good Samaritan Center.
A memorial service is 3 p.m. Saturday at the Winthrop Good Samaritan Center.
Minnesota Valley Funeral Home, New Ulm, is in charge of the arrangements.
She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Fleischaker of Las Vegas, Nev.; and eight grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Winfred.
She was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Moltke Township, Sibley County.

Rose Goblish, 94, of Morgan, formerly of Bechyn, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at the Gil Mor Manor, Morgan.
Mass of Christian burial is 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Bechyn, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 10:30 a.m. until services at the church Tuesday.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and Joe Hoffmann of rural Sleepy Eye; son and daughter-in-law, James and Becky Goblish of Dunwoody, Ga.; foster son and daughter-in-law, John and Mariann Horejsi of Vienna, Va.; six grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William V., in August 1986; sister, Maria Horejsi; and brothers, Edward Horejsi and Anton Horejsi.
She was born July 8, 1906, in Beaver Falls Township, Renville County, to John W. and Anna (Novy) Horejsi.She married William V. Goblish on Sept. 9, 1929, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Bechyn. They lived in Vesta for four years before moving to a farm in Beaver Falls Township, Renville County, where they farmed until 1967. They then moved to Tucson, Ariz., and lived there for 26 years. In 1987 she moved to Minnesota and lived in New Ulm and then Sleepy Eye. In 1996 she became a resident of the Gil Mor Manor in Morgan.
She was a member of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, New Ulm, and a former member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Bechyn.

Lauretta Johnson, 78, of Fairfax, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at Fairfax Community Home.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Fairfax, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Sunday and 7:30-8 a.m. Monday at Hauser-Hantge Funeral Chapel, Fairfax and one hour prior to services at the church. There will be a parish prayer service 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral chapel.
She is survived by daughter Julie Johnson of Fairfax; sister and brother-in-law, Delores and Sylvester Brunner of New Ulm; brothers, Harold Voltin of New Ulm, and Sylvester Voltin of Glenwood; and three aunts.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Clara Voltin, and two sisters-in-law.
She was born Feb. 12, 1922, in Ridgely Township, Nicollet County, to Henry and Clara (Zollner) Voltin. She lived in New Ulm for several years and worked at Union Hospital. She returned to Fairfax and worked at the Ren-Fare boarding home and Fairfax Public School under the Green Thumb. She also worked at Fairfax Community Home. She retired in Fairfax. She moved to Fairfax Community Home in October 2000.
She was a long-time member of St Andrew's Catholic Church, where she belonged to the Christian Mothers.

Clara A. (Mrs. John) Singer, 94, of Coral Springs, Fla., formerly of New Ulm, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at her home.
Mass of Christian burial is 11 a.m. Monday at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, New Ulm, with burial in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery. Visitation is 4 - 7:00 p.m. Sunday and 7:30 - 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home, New Ulm. The Christian Mother's Society will pray the rosary at 4:00 p.m. at the Cathedral. There will be a parish prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
She is survived by her husband, John, of Coral Springs, Fla.; son and daughter-in-law, Jerome and Marlene, of Tamarac, Fla.; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and daughter, Audrey Petersen.
She was born Nov. 12, 1906, in Sleepy Eye. She married John Singer on June 20, 1932, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye. They lived in New Ulm until moving to Spring Valley in 1989. In 1996 they moved to the Lake Villa Maria Apartments in Sleepy Eye. In July 2000 they moved to Coral Springs, Fla.
She was a member of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm and the Christian Mother's Society.

Andrew Zupfer, 80, of St. Paul, formerly of New Ulm, died at his home Friday, Jan. 26, 2001.
Mass of Christian Burial is 10 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 840 E. 6th St., St. Paul, with burial in Union Cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Sunday at Mueller Mortuary Parkway Chapel, 835 Johnson Parkway at E. 7th St., St. Paul (651-774-9797).
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn; sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Susan, and Danny and Diane; daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra Thompson and Debra and Larry Jr. St. Sauver; 12 grand children; and seven great grandchildren.
He was a lifetime member of Painters Local 61.
In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred.

Angeline Mertz, 96, of Sleepy Eye, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at St. John Lutheran Home, Springfield.
Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Tuesday and 7:30-9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye. A parish prayer service will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
She is survived by a niece, Shirley Hendley, of Sleepy Eye; a nephew, John of Sleepy Eye; and several cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother and sister-in-law, Ray and Rose Mertz.
She was born June 9, 1904, in Leavenworth Township, Brown County, Minnesota to John J. and Mary (Warta) Mertz. She attended rural District 43 and St. Mary's School. She lived on the family farm until entering St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield in 1991. She belonged to St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Alan Ladd, 52, of Stevens Point, Wis., formerly of Sleepy Eye, died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at his home.
Visitation is 4:30-8:30 p.m. today at Boston Funeral Home, Stevens Point.
A visitation at Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye is set for 10 a.m. to noon Friday at Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye, followed by a graveside service in Home Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine; daughters, Jessica Grace Huggins and Jocelyn Ray Ladd; a sister, Colleen and her husband Richard Kokkila.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Francile Ladd.
He was born Nov. 24, 1948, in Sleepy Eye to Howard and Elaine Ladd. He served as first lieutenant in the Army during the Vietnam era and was stationed in Korea. He received a B.A. degree in business, an M.B.A. in industrial relations from the University of Minnesota, and an Executive MBA from the University of Michigan. He was a general manager of district operations for Wisconsin Gas Company.
A memorial is established in his name for the Alan Ladd Scholarship Fund in lieu of flowers.
