James L. 'Fred' Friedrich, 47, of Courtland, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at the Methodist Manor in Storm Lake, Iowa from a brain tumor.
Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm.
Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Wednesday and 7:30-10:30 a.m. Thursday at Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm; and continues one hour before the service Thursday at church.
There will be a second service at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Barker Funeral Home in Alta, Iowa, with burial in St. John Lutheran Cemetery in rural Alta. Visitation is 1-8 p.m. Friday with the family present from 5-8 p.m.
He is survived by his wife, Charlene "Char" Friedrich of Courtland; daughter, Lisa Friedrich; son, Chad Friedrich, both at home; father, Harold Friedrich of Alta; sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Richard Symonsbergen of Nebraska City, Neb.; brothers and sisters-in-law, David and Patricia Friedrich of Alta, Iowa, and Duane and Elizabeth Friedrich of Houston, Texas; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Wayne and Donna Johnson of Alta, Iowa; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Annette and Patrick Petersen of Alta. Iowa, and Byron and Mary Johnson of Ankeny, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Frances Friedrich.
He was born Sept. 5, 1953, in Storm Lake, Iowa, to Harold and Frances (Bremer) Friedrich. He was a 1971 graduate of Alta High School in Alta, Iowa. He graduated from DMACC in Ankeny, Iowa, in 1973.He married Charlene Johnson on Aug. 7, 1976, in Alta. He worked in sales and management positions in Marshalltown, Iowa; Sioux Falls, S.D.; Omaha, Neb.; Batavia, Ill.; Slinger, Wis.; and New Ulm. He most recently worked as a district salesman for Pace Inc. of Brandon, S.D., representing the state of Minnesota. He received the Salesman of the Year Award in October 2000. He was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm where he served on the board of elders for a three-year term.
The family prefers memorials to the American Brain Tumor Association, St. Paul's Lutheran School or Minnesota Valley Lutheran High School.

Wallace 'Wally' Karstens, 69, of rural New Ulm died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, at New Ulm Medical Center.
Services are 11 a.m. Friday at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm with burial in the church cemetery. Military rites will be conducted at the cemetery by the New Ulm veterans organizations.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Thursday and 7:30-8:30 a.m. Friday at Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm; and continues one hour before the service Friday at the church.
He is survived by his wife, Helene Karstens of rural New Ulm; daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and Gerald Reinhart of Palmer, Alaska; son, Jerry Karstens of New Ulm; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law, Deloris and Edward Kokesch of Gibbon, Bernice and Edward Fischer of Gibbon, Marlene and Warren Albrecht of Mankato; brother, Arnold Karstens of Mound; sister-in-law, Sharon Karstens of rural Lafayette; brother-in-law, Harold Kokesch of Spring Park; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Eva Kokesch; sister and brother-in-law, Ila and Verdell Pfeiffer; and brothers, Everett, Henry and Orville Karstens.
He was born Nov. 4, 1931, in Morris to Henry and Lydia (Baak) Karstens. He attended Swanville Country School. He worked as a carpenter for George Arndt in New Ulm. He worked for Isberner Oil until he entered the United States Army in February of 1952 serving in the Motor pool during the Korean War. After his discharge in November of 1953, he returned to New Ulm and continued his job at Isberner Oil as a mechanic. He married Helene Ellanson on Sept. 15, 1975, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. He later worked for Kraft Foods in New Ulm, retiring March 1, 1989. He also farmed in Linden Township until 1992. He was a member of the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm and the Oscar Haugen American Legion Post 365 in Hanska.

Earl Hahn, 61, of rural Gaylord, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at Bethesda Lutheran Hospital, St. Paul.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, New Auburn, with burial in the High Island Cemetery, New Auburn.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Thursday and 7-8 a.m., Friday at the Egesdal Funeral Home, Gaylord, and one hour prior to the service at the church.
He is survived by close friends, Tom Dietel of rural Gaylord, Gary and Carol Dietel of Glencoe; aunts, Elta Hillemann of Arlington and Marie Hillemann of Hutchinson and many cousins.
He was proceeded in death by his parents.
He was born July 2, 1939, in Glencoe to Arthur and Cora (Hillemann) Hahn. He graduated from Gaylord High School in 1957. He had Earl's Concertina Band for many years, performing in the Gaylord area. He taught concertina lessons at his home. He farmed on the family homestead in New Auburn Township. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, New Auburn and the High Island Conservation Club, New Auburn.

Frieda Ulmen, 91 of Mankato, died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, at Hillcrest Health Care Center, Mankato.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John the Baptist Church, Mankato, with burial in Calvary Cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m Thursday at Mankato Mortuary, with a rosary service at 6:30 p.m.. Visitation continues one hour before the service Friday at the church.
She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Kathleen Tharp of Longville, Dorothy and Raymond Cain of St. Peter, Jeanette and Charles Kruse of Janesville, Linda and Ed Schweiss of Springfield; 18 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; brother and his wife, Fred and Rosie Schimek of Eagle Lake; nephews, nieces and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, a sister and two brothers.
She was born Aug. 23, 1909, in Mankato to Joseph and Mary (Drummer) Schimek. She married Robert J. Ulmen on Nov. 26, 1930, in Mankato. She worked for Minneopa State Park as a custodian, Wilmes Bros. Produce as an egg candler. She worked at Minnesota State University as a cook at Daniel Buck dormitory and a custodian at Cooper Hall. She also worked at the snack bar at St. Joseph's Hospital and at St. Joseph's the Worker School as a cook for the school lunch program. She did catering from her home for more than 20 years. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Church, Holy Family Society at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and the Mission Guild. She was a 4-H leader for 25 years.

Matt M. Siegfried, 96, of Franklin died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at Franklin Health Care Center in Franklin.
Mass of Christian burial is 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Church of the Sacred Heart in Franklin with burial in the Birch Coulee Cemetery in Birch Cooley Township with military honors by the Martin Jensen American Legion Post 4308 of Franklin.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Home in Redwood Falls; and continues one hour before the service Saturday at the church.
He is survived by nephew, Robert Tretbar and wife Shirley of Franklin; niece, Rosemary Beckler and husband Harlan of Bird Island; sister-in-law, Idabelle Siegfried of Rogers; several nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews; and great-great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ben Siegfried; sisters, Elizabeth Farrell, Grace Buehner and Margaret Tretbar.
Matt Martin Siegfried was born on March 6, 1904, in Birch Coulee Township to Martin and Barbara (Kirchen) Siegfried. He attended country school in Renville County. He resided his entire life in Birch Coulee Township and took over the family farm in 1932. He served in World War II and was a member of Franklin American Legion Post 4308 for 55 years. He retired from farming in 1967. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Catholic Order of Foresters.

Franklin Buck, 82, of Leasburg, Mo., and formerly of the Arlington area, died Feb. 3, 2001, at his home.
Visitation is 9-11 a.m. Saturday at Fenske Funeral Home, Arlington, with burial in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Arlington Township, Sibley County.
He is survived by sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Jack Smyly of Eclectic, Al.; sister-in-law, Bernice Lieske of Arlington; friends, Charlie and Patsy Garavaglia and family of St. Louis, Mo.; nieces, nephews; other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Willard Edward Buck.
Franklin F. Buck was born on Aug. 24, 1918, in Sibley County, to Louis H. and Alma M. (Weihe) Buck. He grew up in rural Arlington. He graduated from welding school in March of 1941 in Minneapolis. He lived in many different parts of the country, using his skill as a welder (iron worker) in different occupations. He lived in Times Beach, Mo., California, and the St. Louis area. He moved to Leasburg, Mo., in 1987.

Fred Bowman, 77, of Comfrey, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at Lake Crystal Health Care Center.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday, at New Hope Lutheran Church, Comfrey, with burial at Faith Lutheran Cemetery, Comfrey.
Visitation will be 3-7 p.m. Sunday, 7:30-9:30 a.m. Monday at Sturm Funeral Home, Comfrey, and one hour prior to services at the church.
He is survived by daughters and son-in-law, Nita and Eldean Enderson of Glencoe, and Janelle Bowman of Plymouth; sons and daughters-in-law, Lee and Doreen of Darfur and Bruce and Bernie of LaBolt, S.D.; nine grandchildren; brothers and sister-in-law, Elmo of Comfrey, James and Carol of Brooklyn Center, and Floyd of Comfrey; sisters Mae Schwab of Sleepy Eye and Amy Bowman of Mankato; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife Jeanette, in 1996.
He was born on Nov. 23, 1923, in rural Comfrey, to Elmer and Alma Bowman. He married Jeanette Armstrong on June 4, 1955, in Comfrey. He worked for the Comfrey Grain Elevator. In 1962 he became general manager for the Farmer's Elevator Company of Darfur, for 27 years. He retired in 1989. He was a volunteer fireman in Darfur for 20 years, and a driver for Heartland Express and Meals on Wheels.

Margaret Sohler, 88, of rural Lake Crystal, died Friday Feb. 9, 2001, at Immanuel-St. Joseph's Hospital in Mankato.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Holy Family Catholic Church, Lake Crystal, with burial in Holy Family Cemetery, rural Lake Crystal.
Visitation will be 2-5 p.m. Sunday at Lake Crystal Mortuary, with a prayer service at 4.30 p.m., and one hour prior to services at the church.
Memorials are preferred to Immanuel-St. Joseph's Hospice or donor's choice.
She is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Kristine and John Pfeffer of New Richland; sons and daughters-in-law, Gene and Mary of Maple Lake, Richard and Wynn of Prior Lake, and Daniel and Lois of Lake Crystal; nine grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; sister, Till Meyer of Shakopee; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo, two brothers and two sisters.
She was born Aug. 28, 1912, in Mankato, to Louis and Clara (Augustine) Riederer. She married Leo A. Sohler on Aug. 9, 1936, in Mankato. She worked as a cook at the Hub Cafe in Lake Crystal and was the first cook at the Lake Crystal Health Care Center.
She was a charter member of Holy Family Catholic Church. She taught religious classes for many years and made sure the church was open for Sunday mass and special functions. She was a hospice and nursing home volunteer and a member of the C.C.W., Garden Club, Neighborhood Club.

Esther L. Lieske, 95, of Henderson, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at Good Samaritan Center in Arlington.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Arlington Township, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be 3-8 p.m. Monday at the Kolden Funeral Home in Henderson and one hour prior to the services at church.
She is survived by daughters; Ethel (Mrs. Orville) Beuch of Henderson, Lois Scherer of Redwood Falls, Carol (Mrs. Lowell) Pogatchnik of Finlayson, LaVonne (Mrs. John) Bangsund of St. Cloud, Dorothy (Mrs. Delmar) Peterson of Gibbon, Claire Dulgar and her friend Frank Shelton of of Maple Grove, and Lorraine (Mrs. Paul) Doring of Litchfield; 21 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Ellen; a great-grandson, Curtis Pogatchnik; five brothers, five sisters and two sons-in-law.
She was born June 4, 1905, to Martin and Rosina (Soeffker) Nagel in Arlington Township, Sibley County. She married Alfred Lieske on Aug. 21, 1929, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Arlington Township. She was a homemaker on their farm in Henderson Township, Sibley County. She also worked at Fingerhut in Gaylord, in the kitchen at the Good Samaritan Center in Arlington, and seasonally at Green Giant in Le Sueur. She was a lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran Church and was active in the Ladies Aid. She was active in the Sibley County Home Extension, a former 4-H leader and member of the Birthday Club.

Loretta R. Anderly, 79, of Arlington, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at the Sibley Medical Center in Arlington.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Jessenland, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Sunday at the Fenske Funeral Home, Arlington, and one hour prior to services at the church. Parish prayers will be 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
The Fenske Funeral Home of Arlington is in charge of arrangements.
She is survived by sister-in-law Violet Anderly of Arlington; and nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; sisters Agatha Dacey, Mary Marso and Helen Monahn, and brother Clarence Anderly.
She was born Jan. 10, 1922, to Edward and Grace (Trimbo) Anderly in Jessenland Township. She farmed all her life on the family homestead in Jessenland Township. She moved to Arlington in March 2000.
She was a lifelong member of St. Thomas Catholic Church, Jessenland, and a member of the Rosary Society.

Ryan Anderson, 15, son of Blair and Louise Anderson of rural Franklin, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, in rural Franklin, from injuries sustained while snowmobiling.
Services will be 4 p.m. Monday at the Franklin Elementary Gymnasium, with private burial at a later date.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. at the Nelson Funeral Home, Redwood Falls, and from 3 p.m. until the time of service Monday at the Franklin Elementary School.
He is survived by his parents; brother Justin, sister Marnie; grandmothers Ethel Anderson of the Fairfax Community Home, and Bea Schweiss of Fairfax; aunts and uncles Owen and Lori Anderson, Becky and Gary Hess, Jody and Dave Busch, all of Fairfax, Colleen Anderson and Carmen Anderson of Buffalo, Caroline and Greg Linden of Shorewood, Ruth and Bruce Swenson of Nicollet, Peggy and Tom Baldy of Brooklyn Park, Becki and Dick Schweiss of Hutchinson, Chuck and Barbara Schweiss of Delafield, Wis., and Tom Schweiss of Welcome; many cousins, friends and schoolmates.
He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Gordon Anderson and Gilbert Schweiss; great grandmother, Albertina Anderson and aunt, Geri Lynn Schweiss.
In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to Renvill County 4-H Ambassadors or the Cedar Mountain School District education program.
He was born Oct. 6, 1985, in Redwood Falls, to Blair C. and Louise (Schweiss) Anderson. He was a freshman at Cedar Mountain School and he was active in band, FFA, Cougar basketball, track and the SCMC cross-country programs.
He was a member of the Cornerstone Christian Church in Redwood Falls where he was active in the youth group and helped with the sound system. He was an avid sportsman enjoying hunting with his dad and friends. He ran for competition. He served as a 4-H ambassador. He won many awards with his sheep, pigs, goats, call ducks and dogs.

Melvin E. Tabbert, 70, of Gaylord, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at the Arlington Hospital.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Gaylord, with burial in the church cemetery.
Full military honors will be provided by the Gaylord Manthey-Asmus American Legion Post 433.
Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday and 7:30-8:30 a.m. Monday at the Egesdahl Funeral Home, Gaylord, and one hour prior to services at the church.
He is survived by his wife, Gloria of Gaylord; son and daughter-in-law, Kim and Polly Tabbert of Inver Grove Heights, daughters and sons-in-law, RaNae Drexler of Gaylord, Cindy and Tom Jennings of Deering, N.H., and Julie and Ron Schwint of Brandon, S.D.; 13 grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Hilbert and Emma of Gaylord; sisters and brothers-in-law, Dorothy Schuette of Glencoe, Marcella and Elroy Bargmann of Glencoe, Alice and Lowell Redman of Kasson; sisters-in-law, Vivian Tabbert of Richfield, and Marles Fischer of Brownton; and brothers-in-law Melvin Hesse of Logan, N.M., and Reginald and wife Joyce Hesse of Auburn, Wash.
He was born Oct. 12, 1930, in Round Grove Township, McLeod County, to Henry and Selma (Kelm) Tabbert. He served with the Hutchinson National Guard which was activated during the Korean War. He served in the U.S. Army from Jan. 16, 1951, to Dec. 4, 1952, at Camp Rucker, Ala.
He married Gloria Hesse on Dec. 18, 1954, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Brownton. They lived in Winthrop and Gibbon, working at the Winthrop Hatchery and at the Bandow Service Station, Gibbon.
In 1964 they moved to Gaylord and became a partner with Len Scholla, to form Len and Mel's City Service. In 1975, he formed the Tabbert Oil Company. In 1989 he became owner and manager of the Tabbert Oil Service in Arlington.
He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Gaylord, serving on the church council and other committees.
He was a former member of the Gaylord City Council and Gaylord Rotary Club and was a former post commander and member of the Gaylord Manthey-Asmus American Legion Post 433.
He was a former member of the Winthrop Golf Club. He enjoyed bowling and sponsored local teams.

Apollonia Beranek, 94, of 812 N. Broadway in New Ulm, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, at the Sleepy Eye Care Center.
Mass of Christian burial is 11 a.m. Tuesday at Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm with burial in the Catholic Cemetery in New Ulm.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Monday and 7:30-10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. Christian Mothers Society will pray the rosary at 4 p.m. Monday at the Cathedral, and there will be a parish prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Harold and Laverna Beranek of New Ulm and Arnold and Elaine Beranek of Klossner; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and one great-grandson; sister, Adelia Rueckert, of Divine Providence Community Home in Sleepy Eye; and a brother, Alfred Brey of Hutchinson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Beranek on April 18, 1973; sisters, Bertha Brey, Gisella Wendinger, and Anna Hoffmann; and brothers, Harold and Frank Brey.
She was born March 4, 1906, in Lafayette Township, Nicollet County, to Wolfgang and Frances (Gruber) Brey. She attended country school. On June 7, 1927, she married Albert Beranek at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in New Ulm. They farmed in West Newton Township, Nicollet County. They retired from farming in 1969 and moved to New Ulm. She worked as a cook for the Kaiserhoff Restaurant in New Ulm for 20 years. She was a member of Cathedral of the Holy Trinity and Christian Mothers Society.
