Joy Ann VanValkenburg-Gulbranson
Services were held earlier this week for Joy Ann VanValkenburg-Gulbranson. She lost her battle against cancer Sat., Nov. 25, 2000. She was 64.

She was born in Duluth to William Chesley and Jennie Mabel (Handel) Seguin. She grew up in Twig and was a lifelong Twig and Pike Lake area resident. Joy was a homemaker and a graduate of Proctor High School. She had been an active volunteer at St. Luke’s Hospital for many years and was a docent at the Duluth Zoo. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Proctor Women of the Moose, was a former member of the Canosia Township Planning and Zoning Commission and had been a Cub Scout den mother. She loved her family and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She enjoyed the Minnesota Vikings, flowers, photography, horseshoes, stained glass, bird watching, riding on the pontoon boat and had been a participant in Grandma’s Marathon several times.

Joy was preceded in death by her first husband Richard in 1997 and by her parents.

Survivors include her husband Keith, sons Dick (Jackie) VanValkenburg and Doug (Patty) VanValkenburg, both of Saginaw and Scott (Julie) VanValkenburg and Brad (Jodi) VanValkenburg, both of Pike Lake, Keith’s children Greg Gulbranson, Kandice (fiancé Joe Bullyan) Gulbranson, Dennis (Diana Nelson) Gulbranson and Kevin (Teri) Gulbranson, all of Saginaw, sisters Karol (George) Roland of Saginaw and Karen (Bob) Rasner of Pike Lake, brothers Robert Seguin of Germany, Robin (Pat) Seguin of Arizona and Jack Seguin of Duluth, grandchildren Chase, Chad, Laura, Deena, Miala, Lance, Jaime, Lane, Lorne, Bill, Jennifer, Jakob, Jared, Brenan, Ramsey, Nicole and Laura, a great-granddaughter Katie June, and many other loving relatives and friends. Joy’s family wishes to extend a special thank you to the staff at St. Luke’s Hospital for their kindness and wonderful care.

Burial was in Canosia Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Laurie D. Higby
Services were held earlier in the week for Laurie D. Higby. The former Proctor resident and Proctor Jr. High School secretary died Sat., Nov. 25 in Moose Lake. She was 67.

Laurie was born in Cook. She lived in Proctor from 1965 to 1988 and moved to Moose Lake. She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church there and its various church groups, including the Busy Bees Quilters.

Surviving are her husband of 47-1/2 years Robert, a son Edwin R. (Kathleen) of Brooklyn Park, Minn., daughters Sheila Mainella of Moose Lake and Pamela (Robert) Bingaman of Duluth, a brother Robert (Sharon) Moen of Rough and Ready, Calif., sisters Doris (Jack) Hanson of Proctor and Betty Oman of Oakdale, Calif., grandchildren Michael (Emma) Higby, Brandon and Jake Higby, Eric Bingaman, Tiffany Mainella and great-grandson Ian Higby.

Burial was in Solway Cemetery with arrangements by Bell Brothers.

Eva Mary “Eve” LaSota
Martha Johnson is mourning the death of her mother, Eva Mary “Eve” LaSota. She died Mon., Nov. 27, 2000, in her North Shore Dr. home. She was 82.

Eva was born in Royalton, Minn., where she graduated from high school in 1936. On Feb. 15, 1943, she married Clarence LaSota and moved to Duluth.

She was a member of St. Michael’s Church and its women’s circles. She was a former Cub Scout den mother and Girl Scout leader. Eva Mary also had been a volunteer in St. Mary’s Medical Center and was a member of Harbor Club wives.

She is also survived by her husband of 57 years Clarence B., another daughter and three grandchildren.

Visitation is today, Thursday, from 10 until the 11 a.m. service in St. Michael’s Church. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Edythe R. Armstrong
Services will be held today, Dec. 7, for Edythe R. Armstrong of Proctor. She died Mon., Dec. 4, 2000 at Viewcrest Health Center. She was 81.

Edythe was born April 3, 1919 in Saginaw, MN to James and Peninnah (Richards) Dalton. She married John Armstrong in 1953 in Duluth and they resided in Hermantown. She worked as a Foster Parent for many years retiring in 1983. She was a Charter Member of Grace Lutheran Church in Hermantown and was also a member of Solway Senior Citizens, AARP, McKinley Homemakers, Birthday Club, and was an active bowler at Skyline for about 30 years. Edythe enjoyed traveling to Florida with her husband John during the winter, staying at their cabin at Upper Stone Lake, traveling in their motorhome and was an avid Bingo player.

She is survived by her husband John of Proctor, sons Chester (Gwen) Carroll, Jr. of Proctor and Glenn (Kris) Armstrong of Hermantown, daughters Sharlene (George) Letchworth of Hermantown, Ruby (Dan) Ellenson of Foxboro, Wisc. and Arlene (Tom) Bollinger of Duluth, 17 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, a brother John (Shirley) Dalton of Duluth, a sister Neryne Granholm of Saginaw and many foster children.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. today at Grace Lutheran Church, 5454 Miller Trunk Highway, Hermantown with Pastor William Pohl presiding. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the church. Burial will follow at Sunrise Memorial Park in Hermantown.

Ida Marie Johnson
Ida Marie Johnson, who was known for cooking meals for hungry Duluth Missabe and Iron Range Railway employees, died Wed., Dec. 6, 2000 in a Duluth hospital. She was 98.

She was born Nov. 30, 1902, to Chris and Clara Barby in Ella, Wis. She lived in Proctor from 1917 to 1946, and from 1946 to 1994, she lived on 56th Avenue West in Duluth. The past six years, she lived on South Boundary Avenue in Proctor with her granddaughter.

She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Proctor.

She was preceded in death by her husband Hjalmer in 1982, her daughter Eleanor Copiskey in 1988, her son Donald Johnson in 1994, four brothers and two sisters.

Ida is survived by her granddaughters Dana Copiskey (Richard Grover) of Proctor and Susan Copiskey of Bemidji, great-grandchildren Danica Caroll Grover, Salli (Jamey) Coons, Matthew (Heather) Copiskey and Joshua (Melonie) Copiskey and great-great-grandchildren Ellie, Brody, Rockford and McCullen.

Burial was in Midway Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Jule L. Shaw
George Shaw and Dorothy Marchand of Proctor are mourning the death of their brother, Jule L. Shaw. He died Tues., Dec. 5, 2000 in his Duluth home. He was 87.

Jule was born in Allouez, Wis. He served in the Army in Europe for three years during World War II as a sergeant. Jule worked as a machinist for National Iron and retired in 1979 after 40 years. He was a member of St. Mary Star of the Sea Church and the American Legion.

Jule is also survived by his wife Elizabeth, two sons, five grandchildren, six great-great grandchildren, two other brothers, two other sisters, his special niece Betty Shanoff of Proctor, friend and brother-in-law Stanley Jurkanis and many nieces and nephews.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.

Morton F. Miller
Former Proctorite Morton F. Miller, died Fri., Dec. 8, 2000 in a Duluth hospital. He was 75.

The Superior resident was born in Cumberland, Wis.

He married Sharon Cale in Burroakes, Iowa, and recently celebrated 38 years of marriage. Morton had lived in Superior for the past 20 years.

Morton served in the Navy as an Aviation Radioman First Class and was awarded a Gold Star for meritorious achievement in aerial flight while serving in Torpedo Squadron Twenty Five, attached to the USS Chenango in 1945.

Morton worked on the family farm and with 3M Corporation in Cumberland. He also worked as a postal clerk in St. Paul, Cumberland and Duluth, retiring in 1985 after 30 years of service with the U.S. Postal Service.

Morton was also a renowned fisherman and was Captain of the “Jenny-Who?” at Superior’s Barkers Island Marina.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and a former member of the Lake Superior Steelhead Association.

He is survived by his wife Sharon, a son Gene (Karen) Miller of Isle, Minn., daughters Susan (Leonard) Anderson and Debra (Michael) Urie, both of Proctor,, ten grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, a sister Norma (John) Niederheiser of Eden Prairie, Minn. and Many nieces and nephews.

Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery in Superior.

Dorothy L. Anderson
Services were held earlier this week for Dorothy L. Anderson. The former Zenith Terrace resident died Thurs., Dec. 7, 2000 in a Duluth hospital. She was 88.

She was a lifelong area resident and had worked in the sausage kitchen in the Elliott Meat Packing Company for 35 years, retiring in 1977. She was a volunteer for the Food Shelf, a member of the West Duluth American Legion Auxiliary Post 71, Union Local 1116 and AARP. She was also a member and did volunteer work for many years with the Goodwill Auxiliary.

Surviving is her daughter Beverly (John) Oltmanns of Proctor, a sister Truie Riska of Duluth, grandchildren Debra Parrington, Heidi Otis, Jeffrey Oltmanns and Dana Seguin, and ten great-grandchildren.

Burial was in Forest Hill Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Gladys M. Wagner
Gladys M. Wagner, who along with her husband owned and operated Proctor Fuel and Transfer, died, Wed., Dec. 6, 2000 in her Duluth home. She was 91.

She was born in Hermantown and lived most of her life in Proctor. She was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Proctor and also very active in the Proctor schools with Girl Scouts, Letterman’s Club, traveling with the bands and many other activities.

She was preceded in death by her husband Gust in 1974, her parents Herman and Hilma Clauson, her son Arthur Wagner, grandsons Greg and Gary Wagner and a great-grandson Ross Wagner.

Surviving are daughters Dorothy (Lloyd) Zack of Cloquet and Joanie (Clayton) Berg of Duluth, grandchildren Kathy (Terry) Mullen, Todd Zack, Scott (Beth) Berg, Kristy (Mark) Simota and Mark Berg and great-grandchildren Jennifer (Chris), Ryan, Keith and Kelly.

Burial was in Sunrise Memorial Park. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Lorna Mae Nutter
Lorna Mae Nutter, who was born in Proctor on Oct. 17, 1935, died Thurs., Dec. 7 in Cloquet. She was 65.

She was born to William Walter and Blance (Picard) Fontaine.

She was preceded in death by her husband John, her parents, her stepmother, a son and a brother.

Lorna is survived by her children Keith Kelley of Deerwood, Minn., Stephen (Sandra Pieper) Chandler of Penn. and Brian (Natalia) Chandler of Wonder Lake, Ill., grandchildren Emerald, Dylan, Brandi, Keven Jr. and Jennifer Kelley, a brother and sisters Doris Sargent, Arman Fontaine, Marilyn Grover, Rochell Halvorson, Darlene Lindgren and Nila Freeman.

Private interment.
