Guy Liljeblad
Guy Liljeblad, who retired from the DM&IR in 1986 as Chief Engineer after 32 years, died Sat., Jan. 6, 2001 at Lake Haven Manor of complications from a severe head injury suffered in a fall at his home in October 2000. He was 73.

Guy also served in the positions of Engineer of Track and Supervisor of the Electrical Department. Among his achievements at DM&IR were engineering and construction of the firm’s Duluth Taconite Facility and the infrared ore-thawing project. Prior to joining the DM&IR he was employed by Oglebay-Norton Co. in Duluth where he helped engineer the Silver Bay Taconite Facility.

He was a past president of several organizations including the Duluth Skyline Rotary Club, Duluth Shrine Chanters, and Committee 22 of the American Railway Engineers Association. He was a member of the Maintenance of Way, St. Paul, and the Duluth Flying Club. He also volunteered his time to the Boy Scouts (Troop 7), Junior Achievement, Duluth Sheltered Workshop, and other organizations.

Born in Milwaukee in 1927, Guy graduated from South Division High School and entered the U.S. Navy in 1945. Guy and Patsy Stengl married in Milwaukee in 1947. He graduated from Michigan Tech in 1948 with a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering.

He is survived by his wife Patsy, his children Gyneth (Michael) Slygh of Eau Claire, Wisc., Kris (Lana) Liljeblad of Bellevue, Wash., Frank (Beth) Liljeblad of Duluth, and Kari Lee (Daniel) Puqua of Bakersfield, Calif., and grandchildren Erin Slygh (Mark) Abrahamson, Tara Liljeblad (Christopher) Quijano, Natasha Liljeblad (Jason Williams), John Michael Liljeblad and Anna Elizabeth Liljeblad.

Consistent with Guy’s wishes a celebration of his life will be held for family and friends at a later date.

Memorials to the Shrine Children’s Hospital or the American Parkinson’s Assn. would be appreciated. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Ruth L. Prouse
Ruth L. Prouse, who was born Jan. 2, 1900 in Midway Township, died Mon., Jan. 8, 2001 in Chris Jensen Nursing Home. She was 101.

She was born to John and Augusta (Stark) Johnson. She married Alva Prouse, Sr. in 1923 and lived in West Duluth for 13 years until deciding to purchase a store in Woodland on Faribault Street, which they named Faribault Grocery. They owned and operated the store from 1936 to 1967. After that, Ruth took a job as a cashier in St. Luke’s Hospital. She was a former member of Woodland United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her son Alva, Jr. (Connie) of Duluth, a grandson John (Deanna) Prouse, a granddaughter Jeanne (Dan) DeWolfe, great-grandchildren Alexander Prouse, and Anna Marie, Jackie and Bobby DeWolfe, a sister-in-law Marie Johnson, and beloved nieces and nephews.

Burial will be in Augustana Lutheran Cemetery, Midway Township. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Edith Sather Hudson
Gordon Sather of Proctor is saddened by the loss of his sister Edith Sather Hudson. She died Sun., Jan. 7, 2001 in a Duluth hospital. She was 87.

She was born in Duluth and graduated from Central High School in 1931. She was a former supervisor for the Bell Telephone Co. and she was an accomplished organist.

She was a member of Salem Lutheran Church, its Esther Circle and AARP.

Survivors also include her daughter Judith (Preston) Henderson of Hermantown, an adopted son David, and three grandchildren.

Burial was in Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Ann Broman
Ann Broman, who taught English at Proctor High School for 28 years until retiring in 1976, died Mon., Jan. 1, 2001 in Lake Shore Lutheran Home. She was 81.

She was born in Duluth. Ann attended local elementary schools and graduated from Duluth Central High School in 1937. She received a bachelor’s degree in secondary education from St. Olaf College and a master’s degree in English from the University of Minnesota.

She was a member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church and its Esther/Ruth Circle. Ann was also a member of the Duluth Area Retired Educators, Lakeside AARP and the American Association of University Women.

She is survived by cousins and many friends.

Burial was in Bethany Cemetery.

Mary C. Young
Mary C. Young, who had been a Proctor resident since 1924, died Sat., Jan. 6, in Nopeming Nursing Home. She was 96.

Mary was born in Spring Park, Minn. She was a former member of Proctor Order of Eastern Star and a life Member of First Operation Post Home-West Duluth American Legion.

Her husband Leon died in 1959. She is survived by grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and a brother.

Burial was in Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Alma “Loretta” Iverson
A Memorial Mass will be held Jan. 27 for Alma “Loretta” Iverson at 5 p.m. in St. Rose Church. She died Sun., Dec. 31, 2000, in Mesa, Ariz. She was 88.

She lived in Proctor until the early 1980’s. She was preceded in death by her three husbands, 14 brothers and sisters, and her parents.

Survivors include a son John Korman of Mesa, a brother Leonard Fontaine of Proctor, and many nieces and nephews.

Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery, Superior.

Rigmor E. Herendeen
Rigmor E. Herendeen, who married Burt Herendeen in 1919 in Proctor, died Dec. 8, 2000 in Grand Rapids. She was 101.

Rigmor was born in Cushing, Wis. She had been a resident at Itasca Nursing Home since 1983.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Burt, and a son Robert.

Rigmor is survived by her daughter Marilyn Davis of Cohasset, a son Frank of Grand Rapids, 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandchild, and a sister Rosea Steinbach of Kenosha, Wis.

Burial was in Itasca Calvary Cemetery.

Rose Anderson
Rose Anderson, who was born on Nov. 2, 1900 and moved to Proctor in 1919 as a newlywed with Carl F. Anderson, died Mon., Jan. 15, 2001 in the Benedictine Health Center. She was 100.

She was born in Willow River, the eighth of 14 children. She was a member of St. Rose Church. She was an avid gardener and loved working in her park-like yard.

She was a member of the Bayview Heights Garden Club and Bayview Heights Birthday Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Rose Koziol, 13 brothers and sisters, her husband Carl and a son Carl.

She is survived by daughters Shirley Capin, Elsie Matthews and June Carpenter, a daughter-in-law Patricia Anderson, grandchildren Cleo (Lyle) McClaire, Steven Matthews, Carla (Lee) Hollingsworth, Robert (Rhonda) Anderson, Gregory (Mary) Kopel-Anderson and June Anderson, ten great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. She will be remembered with love and sadly missed by her family and friends.

Inurnment will be at a later date.

Donald Rudolph Nettleton
Donald Rudolph Nettleton, who was born at home in Munger, died Sun., Jan. 21, 2001 in the Carlton Nursing Home. He was 68.

The former St. Louis River Road resident was born to Homer and Agnetta Pauline (Sorvig) Nettleton. He married Lois Jane Halverson Nov. 22, 1952, in Duluth. He worked for the DM&IR Railway and later for Minnesota Power, retiring from there in 1997. He attended Cloquet Gospel Tabernacle, and was a former member of the Electricians’ Union and Proctor Moose.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Henry.

Donald is survived by his wife Lois, sons Bruce (Nancy) of Eveleth and David (Judy) of Esko, a daughter Linda (Alan) Baumgartner of Detroit, Mich., seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Burial was in Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Harold “Sonny” Platzer
Harold “Sonny” Platzer of Gettysburg, Penn., who was born in Proctor in 1933 to the late Dr. Harold and Anneda Larson Platzer, died at Hershey Medical Center. He was 67.

He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Gettysburg. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a jet fighter pilot from 1955-64. In 1964, he joined United Airlines and in 1993 retired as an international airline captain. He was a member of the Airline Pilots Association. He was also a member of Hanover Country Club and Gettysburg Country Club.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years Kathleen, three children Carolyn A. Faure of Doylestown, Nancy M. Vander Zwan of New Hope and Gregory J. Platzer of Mechanicsburg, two grandchildren, two brothers John D. Platzer of Saginaw, Minn. and William J. Platzer, Minneapolis, Minn. and close family friend Gerald Goerts, who was like a brother.

Private interment was at Evergreen Cemetery.
