Maurice "Morrie" Kurtz, 82 of Rochester, formerly of Redwood Falls, died June 7, 2001, at his home.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Cornerstone Christian Church in Redwood Falls, with burial in the Redwood Falls Cemetery
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Sunday at the Redwood Valley Funeral Home in Redwood Falls, and one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth, of Rochester; his children, Dyanne Judd of Kankakee, Ill., Marlene Evans and husband Robert of Rochester, and Barb Treichel and husband Jerry of Rochester; seven grandchildren; a sister, Lois Miller and husband Andrew of Jewell, Iowa, and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Maurice Kurtz was born June 16, 1918 in Prescott, Iowa to George and Maude (McGrew) Kurtz. He attended school in Prescott, and graduated from Prescott High School in 1937. After graduation, he attended Creston Junior College. On Sept. 21, 1940, Maurice married Ruth Steinkamp in Redwood Falls. The couple lived in Morgan until 1956 when they moved to Redwood Falls. Morrie worked at Runnings Supply for 25 years and also ran a hobby farm until his retirement. After his retirement, Maurice drove school bus for 13 years until January 2000 when he and his wife moved to Rochester.
Maurice was a longtime member of the Church of Christ in Redwood Falls (Cornerstone Christian Church), where he served in various duties such as trustee, and as a deacon for many years.

Jan Mack, 43, of Rochester, formerly of Fairfax, died Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospital after a brief illness.
Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. Joachim's Catholic Church, Plainview, with burial in Greenwood Cemetery, Planview.
Visitation will be 5-9 p.m. Sunday at the Schad and Zabel Funeral Home, Plainview and at the church, one hour prior to the service. A prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
She is survived by her husband, Tim, of Rochester; her mother, "Birdie" and stepfather Lorence Schroeder of Gibbon; daughters, Vicki and husband Bob of Webster City, Iowa and Jenni and husband Scott Ohm of Plainview; two grandchildren; and a sister, Helen and husband Duane May of Stacyville, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her father and grandparents.
She was born July 30, 1946 in New Ulm to Leo J. and "Birdie" Blomhoefer of Fairfax. She graduated from Fairfax High School in 1964 and Rochester School of Practical Nursing in 1966. She married Tim Mack on June 1, 1968 in Fairfax. She worked in Rochester and area hospitals until 1984 when she and her husband moved to Plainview. They operated Mack Publishing Co. and the Plainview News, where she was editor, until 1997. She returned to nursing in 1998 and was employed by Rochester Health Care. They lived in Rochester since 1999.

Iona L. Scharpe, 79, of Green Isle, died Friday, June 8, 2001 at Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia.
Services are 11:00 a.m on Tuesday, June 12, 2001, at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Green Isle, with burial in St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery, Green Isle.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Monday, at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Green Isle. Visitation will continue one hour before the church service Tuesday. Fenkse Funeral Home of Arlington will handle the arrangements.
She is survived by her husband, Ernest Scharpe of Green Isle; sons and daughters-in-law Jerry and Barbara of Glencoe, Kenneth and Myra of Brownton and Robert and Bernadette Scharpe of Hutchinson; daughters and sons-in-law, Cora and Jerry Janke of Brownton, Mary and Robert Luepke of Arlington and Roxanne and Robert Leistiko of Waconia; sisters, Ruth Frauendienst of Gaylord and Elfina Kuehl of Gaylord; brothers and sisters-in-law, Willard and Marcella Frauendienst of Arlington, Emery, Wilbert and Elroy Frauendienst, all of Gaylord, Edwin and Marvis, and Raymond and Phyllis Frauendienst, all of New Auburn; 15 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
She was born Sept. 6, 1921 in New Auburn Township to John and Ida (Grewe) Frauendienst. She attended St. John's Parochial School for eight years. She married Ernest F. Scharpe at St. John's-Mountville on Nov. 5, 1941. The Scharpes lived near Brownton for five years. They lived near Mountville for 15 years and later farmed near Green Isle. Iona also worked seasonally at Big Stone Canning Company in Arlington. Iona was a member of the New Auburn and Green Isle Citizens Group and of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #408 in Green Isle.

Merrill "Joe" Hancock, 65, of Lemoore, Calif., died Thursday, June 7, 2001 at his residence at the age of 65.
A chapel service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Phipps-Date Funeral Chapel in Lemoore.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Patricia Hancock of Lemoore; daughters, Michelle and husband John Dostal of Eureka, Calif., and Marcy Hancock of Lemoore, and extended family Paul and Karen McKinney of Lemoore. He was preceded in death by a sister, Irene Perkins in 2000.
His wife, Patricia (Boettger) Hancock, is formerly of the New Ulm area and many of her family still live in New Ulm and the surrounding area. Local arrangements and notifications were handled by the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm.
Joe was a native of New London, Conn. and had live in Lemoore for the past 30 years. Joe was a United States Navy and Vietnam veteran. He was a member of the Lemoore Fleet Reserve Association Club 26.

Anthony James Taylor, 2 1/2 months, of St. James, died Friday, June 8, 2001, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. James Assembly of God, with burial in Mount Hope Cemetery, St. James.
Visitation will be 4- 6 p.m. Monday as Sturm Funeral Home, St. James, and at the church one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.
Anthony was born at five pounds, 3 1/2 ounces, and 17 3/4 inches in length on March 27, 2001 to James "Bo" Taylor and Lisa Oskerson in Rochester.
Anthony is survived by his parents, James Taylor and Lisa Okerson of St. James; paternal grandmother, Judy Taylor of St. James; paternal grandfather, Dean Taylor of Sylvania, Ga.; maternal grandparents, Jeanette and Darrell Oskerson of St. James; and many uncles, aunts, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal great grandparents, several uncles and an aunt.

Rev. Ken Burke, 72, of Redwood Falls, died Saturday, June 9, 2001, at Redwood Falls Area hospital.
Services are 3 p.m. Tuesday at Jeffers Baptist Church in Jeffers with burial in the Redwood Falls Cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. at Nelson-Martin Funeral Home, and continues one hour before the service Tuesday at the church.

Dennis Hacker, 72, formerly of Lafayette, died Saturday, June 9, 2001.
Services are 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Charles F. Oteri Franklin Home, Franklin, Mass. Burial with full military honors will follow at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
He is survived by son, Dennis H. Hacker Jr., and his wife Linda of Andover; daughters, Mary F. Hacker-LeCount and her husband Robert of Franklin and Kathleen of Hawaii; brother, Jerome Hacker and wife Audrey Hacker of Winthrop; sisters, Marcella Ries of New Ulm, Malindea and husband Bob of Lafayette; sister-in-law, Mabel Hacker of Mankato; brother-in-law, Richard Lane and wife Diane of New Ulm; three grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Roland and Sylvester and a sister, Florence Lane.
He was born in Lafayette, Township, Nicollet County, on April 24, 1929, to Anton and Minnie (Klingler) Hacker. He was educated in Minnesota. For nearly 22 years, until his discharge in January 1968, he served in the U.S. Navy. He attained the rank of Chief Boiler Attendant (E-8), and saw service overseas many times. He received the Navy Occupation Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, World War 11 Victory Medal, Untied Nations Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was also a member of the US Navy Fleet Reserve. After the Navy, he worked in the refrigeration maintenance dept. of the HP Hood Milk Co. in Charlestown.
Memorials are preferred to the World War II Memorial Fund Washington DC, 20420.

Esther Rasmusen, 94, of Sleepy Eye, died Friday, June 8, 2001, at Sleepy Eye Care Center.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Sleepy Eye, with burial in Old Westbrook Lutheran Cemetery, Westbrook.
Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Thursday at Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye, and at the church on Friday, one hour prior to the service.
She is survived by daughters, Myrna and husband Gail Smith of Owatonna and Marlys and husband David Olstad of Hanska; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ole in April of 1994; sister, Florence Thake; brothers, Albert and Harold Thake; and a great-grandson.
She was born on Aug. 9, 1906, in Luverne, Iowa, to William and Hattie (Krueger) Thake. She moved with her family to the Jeffers area in 1912. She graduated from Windom High School in 1924. In 1925 she completed teachers training, and she taught in the Cottonwood County Schools for several years. She married Ole Rasmusen on May 8, 1929, in Westbrook. The couple lived in the Westbrook, Walnut Grove and Tracy areas and later moved into Tracy in 1965. They moved to Sleepy Eye in 1987. She also worked for the Lyon County Assesor's office in Marshall for 13 years. She lived at the Sleepy Eye Care Center since 1999. She was an active member of the Lutheran Church and other community organizations.

Sandra Thorson, 50, of Ormsby, died Saturday, June 9, 2001, in Minneapolis.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Kansas Lake Lutheran Church, rural Butterfield with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. today at Kramer Family Funeral Home in Trimont and at the church Wednesday, one hour prior to the service.
She is survived by her parents, Kerman and Luella Thorson of Ormsby; son, Vernon and wife, Sue of Blaine; two stepgrandchildren; aunts, cousins and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents.
She was born March 23, 1951, in Minneapolis to Kerman and Luella (Davis) Thorson. She moved to Ormsby. She graduated from St. James High School in 1969. She attended beauty school in Fairmont and graduated from medical sssistant training in Minneapolis. She was a medical assistant at the hospitals in Bismark, N.D. for several years until moving back to Ormsby in October of 1999. She was a member of Kansas Lake Lutheran Church in rural Butterfield and a former member of Central Lutheran Church in Minneapolis.

Margaret L. Harned, 87, formerly of Sleepy Eye, died Friday, June 8, 2001, in Laneville.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be at the church Thursday, one hour prior to the service. A Christian Mothers rosary will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday.
Arrangements are with Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye.
She is survived by her son, John and wife Vicki of Laneville; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Marcella Balko of Redwood Falls, and Irene and her husband Granny Discher of Mesa, Ariz.; sisters-in-law, Verena Bruckbauer of Sleepy Eye and Flo Isackson of St, Paul; special friend, Evie Fasnacht of Mankato and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Frank in 1976; sister, Celestine Hauser; brothers, Cornelius Madory and Lyle Madory and brothers-in-law, Albert Balko and Willard Hauser.
She was born on Dec. 23, 1913, in Home Township, Brown County. She married Frank Harned at Marsh Field Base in Riverside, Calif. in 1945. After time in the Army, They moved to Akron, Ohio where they managed the Firestone Supper Club. They moved to Redwood Falls and owned and operated the Mint Cafe. She moved to Sleepy Eye in 1978 after Frank's death. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye, Christian Mothers, Catholic Order of Foresters, American Legion and VFW.

Rev. Gerald Burke, 72, died Saturday, June 9, 2001, at the Redwood Falls Area Hospital.
Services are 3 p.m. today at Jeffers Baptist Church with burial in the Redwood Falls Cemetery.
Visitation is one hour before the service at the church. Nelson-Martin Funeral Home handled arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Ethel; daughter, Donna; son, Jerry of Holdrege, Neb.; daughter, Glenda and husband Gary Kaiser; son, Gordon and wife Vikki; all of Redwood Falls; brother Roger and wife Wilma of Stromsburg, Neb.; sisters, Elaine and husband Frank Holty, Verly and husband Richard Holty, all of Mabel; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandchild.
He was born to Verdy and Geneva Burke on Feb. 28, 1929, in Mora. He attended Lowell Country School and Mora High School. He married Ethel Downing in Hutchinson, Kan., on April 15, 1950, They moved to Two Harbors where he worked as a fireman on the D.M. & I.R. Railroad. He attended Oak Hills Bible Institute in Bemidji. He was a pastor in Backus, and Silver Bay, Minnesota. In 1969 the family moved to Portland, Ore., where he attended Warner Pacific College and Western Conservative. Baptist Seminary. While in Oregon, he served as a pastor in Estacada. In 1971 they returned to Minnesota where he became pastor at First Baptist Church in Redwood Falls. A pastorate in Polk, Neb. followed. He returned to Redwood Falls in 1976 when he retired from full-time ministry and started his own business operating heavy construction equipment. He also served as an interim pastor at the Jeffers Baptist Church. He retired in January 2000. He served as mayor of North Redwood for 12 years. He served on the council and was a member of the RADC.

Clifford Lucio, 96, of Morton, died Tuesday, June 12, 2001, at the Redwood Area Hospital.
Services are 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Cornelia's Church, Bishop Whipple Mission in the Lower Sioux Community, Morton with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation starts at 6 p.m. Friday at Redwood Valley Funeral Home and continues with an all-night vigil and at 8 a.m. Saturday at St. Cornelia's Hall.
Redwood Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Earl Jungers, 78, of Gibbon, died Monday, June 11, 2001, at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.
Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Gibbon with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today and 7:30-8:30 a.m. Thursday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in Gibbon and continues one hour before the service at the church on Thursday.
He is survived by his wife, Clara Jungers of Gibbon; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Ronald Kruggel of Winthrop; sons, Steven Jungers of Westminster, Colo., David Jungers of Shakopee, and Michael Junger of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; grandchildren, Heather Kruggel of Chatfield, Matt Kruggel of Winthrop; great-grandson, Darren of Chatfield; sister, Marion Suppes of Moundsview; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Cecelia Dahlk and Frances Ruud; and a brother Clarence Jungers.
He was born Feb. 24, 1923, in Hector to Nicholas and Helena (Scholla) Jungers. He attended country school and Hector Public School. On May 25, 1946, he married Clara Zackrison in Hector. He served in the United States Army from 1946 to 1948. He farmed in rural Gibbon and then worked for the Gibbon Meat Market and the Gibbon Creamery. He was the head custodian at the Gibbon Public School He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Gibbon.

Elmer Battcher, 87, of Gaylord, died Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at Glencoe Area Health Center in Glencoe.
Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at American Lutheran Church in Gaylord with burial in the Gaylord Cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Friday and one hour before the services Saturday at the American Lutheran Church in Gaylord.
Arrangements are handled by Egesdal Funeral Home.

Fern Dressel, 97, of Le Sueur died Tuesday, June 17, 2001 at her rural Le Sueur farmstead.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Kolden Funeral Home in Le Sueur, with burial in Mound Cemetery, Le Sueur.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m.today at the Kolden Funeral Home.
She is survived by sons, Robert of Owatonna, Richard and wife Katherine Fennema of Le Sueur; daughter, Ramona Nystrom and husband Lloyd of Webster Groves, Mo.; and five grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by husband, Hollis in 1984; three sisters and a daughter-in-law.
She was born Dec. 29, 1903, at Brownsdale to Horace and Emma (Skinner) Pick. She attended grade school at Stanchfield, then moved to St. Peter and attended St. Peter High School. After teacher's training, she taught country school at Oshawa near Nicollet and at Courtland. She married Hollis Dressel on June 7, 1930, at the Evangelical Lutheran Church, rural Courtland. They moved to Sharon Township, Le Sueur Country and farmed. She worked seasonally for more than 30 years for Green Giant.
