Kenneth Leonard, 84, of Nicollet, died Sunday, June 17, 2001 at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester.
Mass of Christian burial is 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Nicollet with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. There will be a parish prayer service at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Visitation will continue from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church.
He is survived by his wife, Agnes Leonard of Nicollet; daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Paul Severson of Sleepy Eye, Mary and Keith Kettner of Nicollet, and Tammejo and Richard Stolt of New Ulm; sons and daughters-in-law, James and Carol Leonard of Hastings, Thomas and Alisa Leonard of Elko, and Steven and Julie Leonard of St. Peter; 19 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law, Arlene and Jack Miska of Nicollet, Audrey and Joe Schneider of New Ulm; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Gerry Leonard of Nicollet, Arlene Stevensen of Madelia, Jim and Shirley Stevensen of New Ulm, Rose and Rich Meurer of Nicollet, Peter Stevensen of Nicollet and Marion Stevensen of Nicollet.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Dean Leonard on Feb. 19, 1962; brother, Donald Leonard; and a sister in infancy.
He was born May 1, 1917, in Groton, S.D., to Guy and Regina (Grommersch) Leonard, He attended country school in South Dakota and in Granby Township, Nicollet County. On Jan. 29, 1941, he married Agnes Stevensen at the Church of the Visitation, Swan Lake. They farmed in Granby and Brighton townships, Nicollet County until they moved in 1980 to Nicollet. From 1975 to 1984 they owned and operated the Leonards Service Station in Nicollet. In the fall of 1985 he started Leonard's Antique Shop in Nicollet. He was a member of the St. Paul's Catholic Church in Nicollet.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorial to donor's choice.

Rita V. Tritz, 81, of Belle Plaine, died Saturday, June 16, 2001, at Belle Plaine Lutheran Home.
Mass of Christian burial is 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of the Prairie Church in Belle Plaine with burial in Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery, Belle Plaine.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m., Tuesday and 8-10:00 a.m. Wednesday at Fenske Funeral Home in Belle Plaine.
Parish prayers are 6 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Bill Morrison of Belle Plaine; sons and daughters-in-law, Kevin and Suellyn Tritz of Excelsior and Kenneth and Liz Tritz of Belle Plaine; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband,Raymond in 1993; sisters Veronica Trimm and Loretta Meuleners; and brother, Kenneth Bertrang.
She was born Jan. 28, 1920, in Green Isle Township to Ben and Mary (Meyers) Bertrang. She graduated from Arlington High School in 1938 and attended DeGuile Beauty in Minneapolis for two years. She married Raymond Tritz on Nov. 26, 1942, in Arlington. She worked at Lila's Beauty Shop in Belle Plaine from 1939 to 1945 and at Robert's Golden Rule in St. Paul. She was a teachers aide at Belle Plaine Public School from 1967 to 1986. She was a member of the Belle Plaine V.F.W. Auxiliary, Our Lady of the Prairie C.C.W. and the Catholic Aid Society, holding office in all groups. She was a Cub Scout den mother.

Edgar Beck, 89, of 816 Third North in New Ulm died Monday, June 18, 2001, at New Ulm Medical Center.
Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Bernadotte Lutheran Church, Bernadotte Township, Nicollet County, with burial in the New Ulm City Cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm and will continue one hour before the service at the church on Thursday.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Galen Bode of rural Sleepy Eye; son, Stanley Beck of New Ulm; grandchildren, Rick Bode and his fiancee, Becky Abraham both of rural Lafayette, Shelly Rewitzer and her husband, Melvin of rural New Ulm; great-grandson, Collins Rewitzer at home; step-great-granddaughter, Jenny Rewitzer; sisters-in-law, Carol Beck of New Ulm, Marcella Lloyd of Rochester, Indiana; and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Michael and Lillian Fruhwirth of New Ulm.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Helen Beck; brothers, Lloyd Beck, Wallace Beck and Roger Beck; stepsisters, Evangeline Aufderhar and Dora Johnson; step-brothers, Ambrose Beck and Clarence Beck.
He was born on May 27, 1912, in Bernadotte Township, Nicollet County to Linus and Elsie (Monson) Beck. He married Helen Fruhwirth on Dec. 2, 1939, in New Ulm. They farmed in Bernadotte Township, Nicollet County. In 1983 they moved to New Ulm. He became a resident of the Sleepy Eye Care Center on March 15, 2000. He was a member of the Bernadotte Lutheran Church.

Lester "Les" Buckentin, 78, of Arlington, formerly of Glencoe, died Sunday, June 17, 2001 at Arlington Good Samaritan Center.
Services will be 7 p.m. Friday at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Glencoe.
Visitation will be 4 p.m. until services Friday at the church.
Arrangements are with Johnson-McBride Funeral Chapel, Glencoe.
He is survived by his wife, Marlys of Arlington; children, Ross of Murrieta, Calif, Doran of Cross Lake, Lisa of Hutchinson and Ward of Boulder, Colo.; and three grandchildren.

Ruby Huffman, 99, of Gaylord, died Sunday, June 17, 2001, at Sibley Medical Center, Arlington.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at United Church of Christ, Gaylord, with burial at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Gaylord.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at the church and Thursday at the church, one hour prior to services.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, Gloria Sinell of Gaylord, Elizabeth Kuphal of Gaylord, John and Gerry of Gaylord, James and Evelyn of Gaylord, Tommy of Minnetrista, and Austin and Kay Huffman of Walker; 21 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her spouse in 1973; brother, Royal Mueller; and sister, Verna Olson.
She was born July 17, 1901, in Gaylord to John O. and Ida (Fisher) Mueller. She married Thomas Peter Huffman on Jan. 4, 1921, in Minneapolis. She attended Immanuel Lutheran Parochial School in Gaylord. They farmed in Sibley Township south of Gaylord until 1963 when they moved into Gaylord. She was a member of the United Church of Christ and the Priscilla Circle. She was a former member of the Gaylord Senior Citizens. She became a resident of the Gaylord Lakeview Home in 1995.

Dana C. Koop, 92, formerly of Springfield, died Thursday, June 14, 2001, at Samaritan Bethany Heights.
Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Homestead United Methodist Church, Rochester, with burial at Evergreen Cemetery, Brainerd.
She is survived by her children, Danna and Dave Ihrke of Rochester, Roberta and James Green of Vermillion, S.D., and John of Waukesha, Wis.; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and brother, Robert of Bremerton, Wash.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
She was born Oct. 14, 1908, in Akeley. She married Daniel Koop on Aug. 22, 1933, in Wheaton, Ill. She was a registered nurse. She belonged to the Springfield American Legion Auxiliary and was past president of the WSCS, 20th Century Study Club and belonged to the ANA, Naomi Circle, HMC Rochester.
The family prefers memorials to the Homestead United Methodist Church and Samaritan Bethany Heights.

Larry Portwood, 66, of North Mankato died Sunday, June 17, 2001, at Immanuel-St. Joseph's Hospital, Mankato.
Service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Mankato Mortuary, with burial in Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at Mankato Mortuary and one hour before services Thursday.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie; sons, Lance and his wife Tami of Savage, Jay of Savage and Lee and his wife Marianne of Burnsville.
He was preceded by his parents; a stepfather; and a brother.
He was born June 18, 1934, in Rapid City, S.D., to Edward and Margaret (Yanzick) Portwood. He graduated from Spearfish High School in 1952. He served in the U.S. Navy from June 11, 1952 and was discharged June 17, 1955. He graduated with a teaching degree from Black Hills State College in Spearfish, S.D. in 1960. He taught school in New Underwood, S.D.; New Leipzig, N.D.; Lake Benton; and at Madelia for 31 1/2 years. He retired in January of 2000. He drove truck part-time for 10 years for Cenex in Madelia and for the past two years for U.A.P. in Kasota. He married Bonnie Gross on Jan. 4, 1963, in Deadwood, S.D. They have been residents of North Mankato for the past two years. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Madelia, American Legion Post 10, Madelia and M.E.A.

Lawrence "Bud" Schwint, 77, of Long Prairie, died Sunday, June 17, 2001, at Long Prairie Memorial Hospital.
Services are 1 p.m., Thursday, June 21, 2001 at Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye with burial in Home Cemetery in Sleepy Eye.
Visitation is 4-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Stephan-Stein Funeral Home in Long Prairie.
There will also be visitation beginning at 11 a.m. Thursday at Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye.
He is survived by sister, Katherine Pitzl of Hendricks; sister-in-laws, Irene Schwint of Redwood Falls, Adeline Schwint of Long Prairie; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Louis, Maurice, Maynard and Allen Schwint; and sister, Alice Wegner.
He was born Aug. 18, 1923, in Eden Township in Brown County, to George and Katherine (Day) Schwint. He was a farm laborer working in western Minnesota. He worked for 30 years at the Armour Packing Co. in South St. Paul, retired in 1984 and moved to Long Prairie.

Harold E. 'Buddy' Williams Jr., 75, of Ridgeway on German in New Ulm, died Sunday, June 17, 2001, at Hillcrest Health Care Center in Mankato.
Mass of Christian burial is 11 a.m. Friday at Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm with burial in the Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Thursday and 7:30-10:30 a.m. Friday at Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. St. John's Court of the Catholic Order of Foresters will pray the rosary at 5:30 p.m., and there will be a parish prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
He is survived by his mother, Rosa A. Williams, a resident of the Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm; and by several cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Harold L. Williams Sr..
He was born April 28, 1926, in New Ulm to Harold L. "Jimmy" and Rosa A. (Schloegel) Williams. In 1945 he graduated from the Holy Trinity High School in New Ulm. He bartended at his fathers business, Jim's Liquors and also at the Mixer Bar and Mowan's Bar until he retired. He played with the Emil Domeier Band, the Pioneer Band and other various old-time bands in the New Ulm area. He was a member of Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm and St. John's Court of the Catholic Order of Foresters.

Florence Finstad, 84, formerly of Albin Township, died Monday, June 18, 2001 at New Ulm Medical Center.
Services are 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Albion Lutheran Church rural St. James with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 5-8 p.m. today at Pease Funeral Home, St. James and at the church Thursday, one hour prior to the service.
She is survived by daughters, Phyllis Johnson and her husband Larry of Alexandria, Colleen Kibbon and her husband, Ron of Hampton, Neb.; sons, Dennis and his wife, Mary Anne of Jackson, Kenneth and his wife, Fay of Hayward, Wis., Richard and his wife, Becky of Clear Lake, Iowa and Howard and his wife Sharon of St. James; 21 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sister, Elizabeth (Betty) Odegard of St. James; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth (Betty) Beckius of Hanska and Clarabelle Beckius of St. James.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on June 5, 2000; brothers, Ray and Jack; and a sister, Arlene.
She was born on Nov. 29, 1916, to Nick and Rose (Dearth) Beckius at Comfrey. She attended school in Comfrey. She married Hjalmer Finstad on April 25, 1936, in Springfield. They farmed in Albin Township, Brown County, for 60 years. She was an active member of the Albion Lutheran Church. She lived on the farm until March when she moved to the Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm.

Darold W. "Kid" Hansen, 85, of Walnut Grove died Tuesday June 19, 2001, at the Tracy Hospital.
Services are 10:30 a..m. Thursday at English Lutheran Church in Walnut Grove with burial in the Walnut Grove Cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today at Jacobson Funeral Home in Walnut Grove with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
He was born April 30,1916, in Lucan to William and Minnie Haag Hansen. He attended country school He worked as a farm hand until he entered the U.S.Army and served from February 1942 to October of 1945. He was employed by the Redwood County Highway Department and the Feed Mill in Lucan until 1947. He married Ella Hoffrogge on March 30, 1947, at Revere Lutheran Church. They lived in Lucan for one year and moved to the Walnut Grove area in 1948 and farmed. He worked for the Masterson Elevator and Botsford Lumber Yard in Walnut Grove. He worked for the A.S.C.S. Office and federal crop insurance for 20 years and he was also an assessor for Redwood County. He was an active member of English Lutheran Church in Walnut Grove. He was a member of Lions Club and the American Legion of Walnut Grove.
He is survived by his wife, Ella of Walnut Grove; son and daughter-in-law, Greg and wife Signe of Walnut Grove; daughter and son-in-law, Ronald (Karla) Beens of Walnut Grove; six grandchildren; sisters, Verna Ness of Redwood Falls, Donna Munson of Walnut Grove; brother, Melvin Hansen of Kansas; sister-in-law, Faye Hansen of Walnut Grove; stepsisters, Delores Sammons of Walnut Grove, Caroline Danielowski of Revere; stepbrother, Devon Rue of California.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

Doris Mayer, 82, of Redwood Falls, died Tuesday, June 19, 2001, at her home.
Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church in Redwood Falls with burial in the Crestlawn Memorial Gardens, rural Redwood Falls.
Visitation is 5-8 p.m. today and 8:30 a.m. to noon Thursday at Nelson-Martin Funeral Home in Redwood Falls and from 1 p.m. until time of service at the church.
She was born on May 15, 1919, in Chasely, N.D., to Andrew and Ruby (Dwelle) Knodel. She graduated from Hurdsfield, N.D. High School in 1936. On Oct. 6, 1938 she married Carl Mayer at Jamestown, N.D. They lived in Chasely, N.D. where they operated a gas station, They then moved to Hurdsfield, N.D., where they went into the grocery business. In 1948 they moved to Redwood Falls and they worked at Hornbacher's. Grocery. She worked as activity director at the Redwood County Nursing Home and Wood Dale Nursing Home for 13 years retiring in 1989. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church including Sunday School teacher, serving all offices of Missions, circle chairman, release time teacher and served on the memorial committee. She was a member of the Hospital Auxiliary serving as chairperson for six years. She also served as a volunteer at the Redwood County Clothing Center and the hospital gift shop.
She is survived by her husband Carl; children, Garwood Mayer and his wife Pat of Williamsburg, Iowa and Candy Reinert of Phoenix, Ariz.; daughter-in-law, Julayane Mayer of Wadena; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Irene Whiteman and her husband Donnie of Flasher, N.D., Joyce Ekness of Marshall, Opal Seibel and her husband Chet of Minot, N.D., Don Knodel and his wife Audrey of Seattle, Wash., Alvin Knodel and his wife Ruby of Auburn, Wash., and Andrew Knodel and wife Audrey of Escindino, Calif.
She was preceded in death by an infant son at birth; son, Larry; and brothers, Durwurd, Merle, Earl; and sister, Connie Knodel.

Jerald Lupke, 62, of St. James, died Monday, June 18, 2001, at St. James Health Services Hospital.
Services are 11 a.m., Friday at First Lutheran Church in St. James with burial at Mount Hope Cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Thursday and 7:30-9 a.m. Friday at Sturm Funeral Home in St. James, and at the church Friday one hour prior to the service.
He is survived by his wife, Arelene; son, Troy and his wife Shirley, of Foreston; daughter, Tamara and David Palm of Sleepy Eye; grandchildren, Kristi, Travis, and Amanda Lupke, Brandon and Lucas Palm; mother, Edna of Truman; sisters, Janis Olson of Truman, Carmen and Alyn Angus of Farmington, Arlys Hoffmeyer of Prior Lake, Cheryl and Ralph Otte of Eagan, Deborah Hotzler of Lake Crystal; brother, Lyle and his wife Sonja of Truman; sister-in-law, Sue Lupke of Truman and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was proceeded in death by his father, Gustav, and one brother Darrel.
He was born on Aug. 8, 1938, to Gustav and Edna (Mausling) Lupke and grew up in rural South Branch Township. He graduated from Truman High School in 1956. He worked at Same's Electric anad for a local lumberyard. He married Arlene Larson on Oct. 8, 1960, in St. James. He worked for the United Parcel Service for 35 years, retiring on Jan. 31, 2000. He was a member of First Lutheran Church and the Swinging Saints Square Dance Club. He also was a member of the St. James Lions Club and was president of the AAL Branch 838.

Sylvia Spencer, 84, of Redwood Falls died Wednesday, June 20, 2001 at the Sunwood Good Samaritan Care Center in Redwood Falls.
Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Nelson-Martin Funeral Home in Redwood Falls with burial in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Sunday and Monday at the funeral home, 8:30 a.m. until services.
She is survived by her daughter Sarah Prescott and husband Roger of Morton; three grandsons; 13 great grandchildren a brother Odine Arndt and wife Jean of Brook Park; brothers and sisters in law and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers and two sisters.
She was born on March 5, 1917 in Tracy to Alexander and Sara (Hodne) Arndt. She attended country schools near Tracy and then Duluth Central High School. On July 19, 1941 she married Otis Spencer in Pulaski County, Ark.when he was stationed at Camp Robertson, north of Little Rock. He went over seas and was killed in the service and she returned to Redwood Falls in 1942. She was self-employed in sales for 30 years.
