Linda L. (Magariner) Kise
Ronald Kiser of Proctor is saddened by the loss of his sister, Linda L. (Magariner) Kiser. She died Tues., Jan. 16, 2001 in Franciscan Skemp Healthcare in La Crosse, WI. She was 53.

She is also survived by her husband Wayne, two sons, a daughter, seven grandchildren, a sister, and three other brothers.

Inurnment was in Sunrise Memorial Park Cemetery, Hermantown.

Frances Zelia Alden
Frances Zelia Alden, who was born in Proctor and taught fourth grade in the Proctor School District for 21 years, retiring in 1973, died Fri., Jan. 26, 2001 in a Duluth hospital. She was 90.

She was a member of Forbes United Methodist Church, where she had been a Sunday school teacher and president of United Methodist Women, Proctor 244 Order of Eastern Star and a past matron, Trinity 242 Order of Eastern Star; Duluth area Retired Educators; Mizpah Shrine 1; Order of White Shrine of Jerusalem; a life member of the Minnesota PTA; had been president of the Summit School PTA; active with the Girl Scout Association for 15 years; and a member of the Proctor Lady Firemen.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers; two sisters; and her husband Marion Ashley “Ash” Alden in August 1954.

Frances is survived by her son Jim (Paula) Alden of Marcell, her daughter Marjory Westphal of Battle Creek, Mich., her brother Russell Ives of Proctor, four grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Burial was in Sunrise Memorial Park Cemetery, Hermantown. Memorials preferred to Forbes United Methodist Church and/or Trinity Chapter 242, OES. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Alice Marian Fossum
Alice Marian Fossum, who lived in Proctor most of her life and taught in its elementary school, died Sun., Jan. 28, 2001 in the Carlton Nursing Home. She was 82.

She was born on Aug. 3, 1918 to Lars and Olina Branden in Gonvick, Minn. She graduated from Bemidji Teachers College and was also a elementary teacher at Stowe School. She married Arnold L. Fossum on Sept. 15, 1944 in Gonvick, Minn. and he died in 1986.

She is survived by a daughter Mary (Jeff) Gookins of Proctor, a son Lyle (Julie) of Minnetonka, a brother Arthur (Sylvia) Branden of Bagley, Minn., a sister Louise Fossum of Detroit Lakes, Minn., and six grandchildren - Shaina, Stacie and Logan Fossum, Joshua, Matthew and Katie Gookins.

Burial was in Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Arnold “Arnie” Laine
Arnold “Arnie” Laine, who worked for the DM&IR for 37 years retiring in 1983 as a track supervisor, passed away Mon., Feb. 5, 2001 in Duluth. He was 72.

He was a member of the safety committee and was a past vice president of 1710 BMWE. He worked with the Saginaw Boy Scout Troop 130 for more than 40 years. He was a past president of the Saginaw Sportsman’s Club, past president of St. John’s Lutheran Church and past president, vice president and treasurer of Hope Lutheran Church. Arnold served in the Korean War and the Air National Guard. He was president of the Finlandia Beach Club for 14 years. He was past commander for two terms for Hebert Kennedy VFW Post 3979 and past Seam Squirrel commander for two years. He was 8th District commander for the VFW for a term and was a member of the American Legion Post 262. He was a member of the Albrook High School Booster Club. Arnold was a very active member of Hope Lutheran Church until his death and he was a volunteer driver for Meals On Wheels.

Arnie was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, a brother and his grandson Connor Laine.

He is survived by his wife Lorraine, his children Jill (Rick) Brown of Baxter and Brett, John (Jackie) and Mark (Cami), all of Saginaw, seven grandchildren, a sister Nathalie (Jim) Fraccassi of Coon Rapids, Minn., and many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

Visitation is from 10 until the 11 a.m. memorial service today, Thurs., in Hope Lutheran Church, 4093 Munger Shaw Road, Solway Township. Private interment. Full military honors accorded by the Cloquet Combined Honor Guard.

Morris Johnson
Ralph Johnson, Mrs. Loren Swenson of Proctor and Vi Inman of Duluth are mourning the loss of two brothers in two weeks.

Morris Johnson passed away on Jan. 20 in Oakland, Calif. He worked for Diamond Match Factory in West Duluth when he was a young man. He married Ruth Foster of Duluth and they moved to California.

He is preceded in death by his wife Ruth.

Survivors include his seven children and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Another brother, Ralph Johnson, passed away on Feb. 3. He lived in Alameda, Calif.

He is survived by his wife Jerryola, two sons, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Both are also survived by two other sisters and two other brothers. They are also preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

Mabel Marie Gustafson
Mabel Marie Gustafson, who was born in Midway Township in 1913, died Mon., Jan. 29, 2001 in Duluth. She was 87.

Mabel was born to Nels and Hannah Malmstein. She was a lifelong area resident.

She was preceded in death by her husband Everett in 1996, her parents, brothers and sisters.

Mabel is survived by a daughter Donna M. Gustafson of Minneapolis and many nieces and nephews.

Burial was in Park Hill Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Vienna L. Johanson
Vienna L. Johanson, who had lived in Twig, died Sat., Feb. 3, 2001 in a Virginia hospital. She was 90.

She was born in Sandy, Minn. She graduated from high school in Virginia. She went to the Young and Hirsch Business College for a year. She married Frank Johanson Jan. 1, 1936, in Ely. She owned and operated three restaurants in Eveleth.

Vienna was a member of Gethsemane Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Vienna is survived by three daughters and one son; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; four brothers, one sister, a sister-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews.

Burial was in Sunrise Memorial Park Cemetery.

LaVerne M. Larson
Services will be held Sat., Feb. 10 for LaVerne M. Larson. She died Fri., Feb. 2 in Viewcrest Health Center. She was 77.

She was born in Duluth and was a lifelong area resident. LaVerne married Gordon W. on May 25, 1942, in Duluth. She was a cashier for Shoppers City and a member of the American Legion Aux. Post 71.

Survivors include three sons Gary W. of Casselberry, Fla., Rick G. of Proctor and Thomas E. (Debbie) of Duluth, three brothers and two grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 10:00 until the 11:00 a.m. memorial service Sat., Feb. 10, in Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. West. Inurnment will be in Union Cemetery, Hermantown.

Phyllis Ann Wakefield
Jim Perrault of Proctor is saddened by the death of his sister, Phyllis Ann Wakefield. She died Wed., Jan. 31 in a Duluth hospital, following a vehicle accident. She was 56.

She was born in Mahnomen, Minn. Phyllis was raised in Duluth and attended Central High School. She had waitressed in local establishments including the former Hotel Duluth and had also worked as a longshoreman. She married Edward Wakefield in Duluth Nov. 17, 1962. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Gnesen.

She is also survived by two sons, four other brothers, two sisters, seven grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Burial was in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

Lorena M. Gruwell
Lorena M. Gruwell, who was born in Proctor in 1919, died Wed., Feb. 7, 2001 in a Duluth health-care facility. She was 81.

She was born to Henry and Eva (LeMay) Clement. She lived in Duluth her entire life, graduating from Denfeld High School. She was a homemaker selling Avon and Watkins.

She was active in many senior activities and organizations, including being a member of Harrison Community Center, West End Senior Center, Holy Family Catholic Church and the former St. Jean’s Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Willard in 1971, a son Dale in 1958, and sisters Ann Stern in 2000 and Eileen Dahl.

She is survived by her son Paul (Jewel) of Duluth, her daughter Diane (Louis) DeRienzo of Garfield, NJ, grandchildren Denise Novack and Louis DeRienzo II, and great-grandchildren Danny and Tori Novack.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery.

Bernard S. Bijold
Rose Bijold is in bereavement following the death of her nephew. Bernard S. Bijold of Hummelstown, Pa., formerly of Scottdale, died Sat., Jan. 6, 2001, at his home after a lengthy illness. He was 41.

He was born Aug. 23, 1959 in Duluth, Minn., a son of Bertha (Bandemer) Marciniak of Scottdale and the late James Bijold. Prior to his illness, he was the body shop service manager at Sun Motor Cars in Camp Hill, and he and his wife were also former houseparents at the Milton Hershey School. He enjoyed fishing and was a member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Hershey and was a past school board member of St. Joan of Arc School.

In addition to his mother, he is also survived by his wife Kathy J. (Povlik) Bijold, a son Timothy S., at home, two brothers and two sisters.

Interment was in Hershey Cemetery, Pa.
