Valarie Labeeuw McMahon
Valarie Labeeuw McMahon, formerly of Proctor, daughter of Julius and Rose Labeeuw, died unexpectedly Mon., Feb. 5, in a hospital in Madison, Wisc. of two aneurysms. She was 44.

Valarie is preceded in death by her parents Julius and Rose Labeeuw, and her brother Richard Labeeuw.

She is survived by her husband Patrick, her daughter Ashley Mason, her son Sean Michael, her Aunt Mary Labeeuw Woods of Proctor, and many aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and cousins.

Services were held in Sun Prairie, Wisc. with burial at Sacred Hearts Cemetery.

Debra “Debbie” Hendrickson
Services will be held Friday for Debra “Debbie” Hendrickson. The Proctor High School graduate died Mon., Feb. 12, 2001 in a Duluth hospice. She was 36.

The 66th Ave. W. resident was born in Duluth. She worked as a housekeeper for various hotels.

Debbie was preceded in death by her father Gerald.

She is survived by a daughter Melisa R. Heroff, her son Josh Hendrickson, her mother Della Hendrickson of Brainerd, two brothers Rick E. of Duluth and Mike (Nathalja) of Brainerd, and a sister Kathy Hendrickson of Brainerd.

Services will be held Fri., Feb. 16, at 11 a.m. in the Oneota Cemetery Chapel. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

George Reuben Bowen
Services will be held today for George Reuben Bowen. He died Sun., Feb. 18, 2001 in his Elder Drive home. He was 80.

He was a lifelong area resident. He married Virginia June Holappa in Duluth on May 1, 1939. He worked for the DM&IR railroad from 1950 until his retirement in 1984, as well as Western Electric, Alworth Woolen and Sam Johnson & Sons Fisheries. He was a member of the Moose Lodge No. 1478.

George was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, three brothers, and his son Gene in 1975.

Survivors include his wife Virginia; children George, Duluth; Gayle Best, Superior, Wisc.; Gwynne Thireme, Withee, Wisc.; Gary, Sandstone, Minn.; Gregory, Phoenix, Ariz.; Gloria Nelson, Esko, Minn.; Grant, Duluth; Geoff, Duluth; Geordis McDonald, Duluth; Garth, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Geneen O’Niell, Hales Corners, Wisc. and Geri Johnson, Duluth; 31 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, his brother Richard of Chula Vista, Calif. and his sister Eileen Willard of Maryville, Wash. George’s pride and joy were his kids and grandchildren.

Visitation will be at Jarvi-Dowd Chapel today from 10 until the 11 a.m. service at Peace United Church of Christ. Burial will be in Park Hill cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Gayle Ann Nelson
Services have been held for Gayle Ann Nelson. The Saginaw resident died Sat., Feb. 17, 2001 in a Duluth hospital. She was 65.

She was born and grew up in Duluth and had lived in Grand Lake since 1969. She was a 1953 graduate of Denfeld High School and was a homemaker. She married John E. “Jack” Nelson Nov. 26, 1955, in Duluth. Gayle loved living on Grand Lake, swimming and fishing on the pontoon boat.

She is survived by her children Steve (Mary) and Chad (Melissa) Nelson, both of Saginaw, Kris (Garry) Foucault of Munger, Tim (Michelle) Nelson of Anchorage, Alaska, and Pattie (Cory) Borgstrom of Green Bay, Wis., a sister Jacquie Shepherd of Duluth, a brother Jeff (Sue) Johnson of The Villages, Fla., grandchildren Candi, Michele, Kelly, Christian, Tricia, Tara, Mat, Adam, Sammi, Tina, Tyler and Cody, great-grandchildren Bryce and Gavon, and many nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Orville Robert Hanson
Services were held for Orville Robert Hanson. The Midway Road resident died Wed., Feb. 14, 2001 in a Duluth hospice. He was 72.

He was born in Duluth to Chris Hanson and Sarah (Rainey) and lived in Duluth and Midway Township. Orville married Viola M. Seguin in 1950 in Duluth. He retired from the Duluth Winnipeg and Pacific Railway in 1989 after 43 years as a machinist. Orville was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church and AARP. He was a great husband, father and grandfather and loved to work on home projects.

Orville was preceded in death by his parents, sons Richard in 1955 and Steven in 1992, brothers Chris Hanson and Ted Rainey, and sisters Gloria Guptill and Viola Nickel.

He is survived by his wife Viola M., sons John (Vickie) of Toledo, Ohio, David of Superior and Kenneth “Pete” (Cindy) of Cloquet, a daughter Mary (Butch) Nickel of Proctor, a brother Jackie (Dori) of Proctor, sisters Betty (Art) Taylor of Hermantown and Sandra (John) Kiminki of Proctor, ten granddaughters, five grandsons, and nieces and nephews.

Inurnment was in Sunrise Memorial Park. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Bonnie (Tweet) Williams
James D. Bentley of Saginaw is mourning the death of his mother, Bonnie (Tweet) Williams. She died Thurs., Feb. 15, 2001 in Montana. She was 51.

Bonnie was born in Grand Rapids. She worked in the Lincoln Hotel and attended Alcoholics Anonymous.

Bonnie is also survived by two other children, two brothers, and two sisters.

Interment was in Park Hill Cemetery.

Germaine Mary Reinke
Germaine Mary Reinke of Second St., Proctor, died Fri., Feb. 23, 2001, in St. Mary’s Medical Center. She was 80.

She was born in Duluth June 4, 1920, to Ernest and Godlieve (Matten) Van Derscheuren. Germaine lived in Hermantown until 1976 and was a Cotton resident until 1992 when she and her husband moved to Proctor. She had worked for Yale and Duluth Laundry Companies and at the YWCA. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Rose Catholic Church in Proctor. She enjoyed and took great pride in the gardens at Railview Apartments.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Albert and Julius, her husband Alvin Carl in 1995, and her grandson Rick Anthony Reinke in 1992.

She is survived by her daughters Diane (Calvin Rudolph of Hermantown and Mary (Gerry) Fox of Payson, Ariz., sons Ernest (Sandy) Reinke of Gulf Shores, Ala. and Mark (Joann) Reinke of Midway Township, a brother Charles (Lois) Van Derscheuren of Proctor, sisters Irene Wagner, Louise (Bob) Bennett and Liz Robison, all of Hermantown, ten grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Burial was in Sunrise Memorial Park Cemetery, Hermantown. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Rosemary D. Nolin
Rosemary D. Nolin, who was instrumental in changing the name of West Duluth to Spirit Valley, died Wed., Feb. 21, 2001 in her Midway Township home. She was 64.

She was born in Blair, Wis. She married Donald E. Nolin Dec. 17, 1951, in Midway Township. Rosemary was a beauty operator and owner of Rosemary’s Carousel Coiffures until she sold her business in 1985. After a short retirement, she obtained her real estate license. Eight years into her 11-year real estate career, she was designated a Certified Residential Specialist.

Rosemary was a member of Northern City Baptist Church and a former member of Lincoln Park (Temple) Baptist Church. She was an active member of the West Duluth Business and Civil Organization. Rosemary also had volunteered at St. Luke’s Hospital in day surgery.

She was preceded in death by a son Donald Nolin, Jr. and a sister Jeannie.

Rosemary is survived by her husband of 49 years Don, daughters Kellie (Scott) Anderson of Florida and Kimberly Nolin of Minneapolis, a son Robert (Marilyn) of Las Vegas, brothers David (Pat) and Dennis (Sonja) Pederson, all of Duluth, sisters Carol (Richard) Johnson of Duluth and Linda (Butch) Neil of Washington state, and three grandchildren.

Burial was in Augustana Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Shelley Rae (Kleppe) Lesemann
Shelley Rae (Kleppe) Lesemann of Chestnut Street, Cloquet, died Mon., Feb. 26, 2001, in her parents home in Duluth after a long illness. She was 28.

Shelley was born in Little Fork, Minn. on June 26, 1972. She had lived in Duluth since 1987 and for the past year in Cloquet. Shelley graduated from Proctor High School in 1990. Shelley Kleppe married Jim M. on July 27, 1995, in Duluth. She was a member of the Tuesday Incliners and the Sky Queen Bowling Leagues. Shelley loved the outdoors, four-wheeling, bird hunting, ice fishing, and bowling.

Shelley is preceded in death by her paternal grandparents Walter and Mary Jane Kleppe.

Surviving are her maternal grandparents Robert and Betty McBride of International Falls, Minn. and her great-grandmother Leona Armit of Ft. Francis, Ontario, her mother and father Keith and Debbie K. Kleppe of Duluth, her husband Jim M. of Cloquet, her sister Cindy K. (Brian) Timm and her nephew Connor Timm of Proctor.

Visitation will be from 10 until the 11 a.m. service today, Thurs., in Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Proctor. Inurnment will be in Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

William B. Mraz
Virginia Nordstrand of Proctor is saddened by the loss of her brother, William B. Mraz. He died Sat., Feb. 24, 2001 in his Duluth home. He was 73.

He was born in Hopkins, Minn. He grew up and worked on the family farm in Wright until he entered the military. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theater.

William married Nancy J. Bruno in 1949 in Cromwell, and they moved to Duluth that same year. He worked for U.S. Steel Duluth Works for 33 years and was able to retire the year the plant closed.

William is also survived by three sons, two daughters, a brother, another sister, seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and his feline companion Mittens.

Spring burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery, Cromwell.

Harry Edward Egan Jr.
Harry Edward Egan Jr., of Acacia Ave., died Sun., Mar. 4, 2001 in a Duluth hospital. He was 74.

He was born in Superior and had resided in Duluth and Proctor all his life. Harry was employed as a pipefitter with U.S. Steel, Duluth Works from 1944 to 1975, and in building maintenance with Jeno’s, Inc. from 1975 to 1984. He retired in building maintenance from the Radisson Hotel in 1986. He attended St. James Catholic Church and was a member of the West Duluth American Legion, Steelworkers Local 1028, and was a former member of the West Duluth Moose. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Harry was an avid bowler and bowled in the Majors for many years. Most recently he bowled in the Seniors.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents Harry E. Sr. and Grace Egan, a brother James, and his brother-in-law Dick Hedeen.

He is survived by his wife DuRaine, daughters Claire (Robert) Smith of Omaha, Neb., Debra (Michael) Hennessy of Duluth, Monica (Dennis) Stokke of Hermantown and Hilary (Mark Norby) Alvino of Chaska, Minn., a stepdaughter Stephanie (Marty) Oberg of Saginaw, a stepson Steven Makitalo of Proctor, a sister Mary Hedeen of Duluth, grandchildren Andrew Harry Smith, Glynnis (George Dietrick) Hennessy, Christopher Hennessy, Mollie (Scott) Lucia, Shaine (Jennifer) Stokke, Katharine Alvino and Maureen Alvino, step-grandchildren Amanda and Carli Oberg, and Eric, Cody and Jessica Makitalo, great-grandchildren Sierra and Abigail Hennessy, and Cole Stokke, and many nieces and nephews.

Military honors were accorded by the Duluth VFW Honor Guard. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.
