Vera Simmet, 92, of 715 South German, Ridgeway On German, in New Ulm died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001 at the Sleepy Eye Care Center in Sleepy Eye.
Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm, with burial in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery in New Ulm.
Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Monday and 7:30-10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. There will be a parish prayer service at the funeral home on Monday at 6:30 p.m.
Vera is survived by her sister Adelia "Dale" Sondag of New Ulm and by many nieces andnephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Lenore "Nora" Sorenson, Helen Mattes, Elsie Simmet, and Lucille Steinhaus; and by a brother, Arthur Simmet.
Vera was born Aug. 5, 1909 in Lafayette Township, Nicollet County to Robert and Anna (Fortwengler) Simmet. She attended country school in rural Lafayette and then the Minneapolis School of Nursing, graduating as a Licensed Practical Nurse in 1949. After graduation she work as a LPN at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Minneapolis for 29 years. In the early '80s she moved back to the Lafayette area for several years before moving to New Ulm. In February 2000 she moved to Ridgeway on German, living there until one week ago when she became a resident of the Sleepy Eye Care Center in Sleepy Eye. She was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm.

Alvina C. Kaufenberg, 85, of Lamberton died Friday Aug. 31, 2001 at Valley View Manor in Lamberton.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Walnut Grove.
Visitation is two hours prior to services at the church. Jacobson Funeral Service, Lamberton, is in charge of arrangements.
She is survived by her husband Bill; a son, Richard of Walnut Grove; a daughter Mrs. Richard (Julie) Van Moer, Milwaukee, Wis.; seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren, inxlusifn Mrcie Burnett, whom they raised; a brother E. Robert Johnson of Walnut Grove; and a sister Rosella Truedson, Walnut Grove.
She was preceded in death by her parents; daughters, Marcella and Eileen Cox; and three brothers.
She was born May 10, 1916 in Johnsonville Township to August and Ellen (Dahlgren) Johnson. She attended country school District 19 and graduated from Walnut Grove High School in 1933. She worked as a hired girl on a farm until she married William Kaufenberg Nov. 22, 1939 at Hinkley. They lived in Johnsonville Township, Redwood County for a couple of years then moved to a farm in Holly Township, Murray County, near Walnut Grove where they lived until she entered Valley View Manor in 2000. She was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church, Walnut Grove.

Wilbert Polesky, 73, Hector, died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001 at the Buffalo Lake Healthcare Center.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hector with burial in the Hector City Cemetery.
Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Monday at the Hughes Funeral Home, Hector and continues at the church Tuesday, one hour prior to the service.
He is survived by his brothers, Emannuel of Hector, Edwin and wife Dorothy of Sleepy Eye, and Arnold and wife Genieve of Rochester; sisters Evangeline Madsen and husband Linus, of Morgan, Eveline Drill of Courtland; a brother-in-law Victor Kiecker of Fairfax; sister-in-law Mary Polesky, of Rose Creek and by many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Lorraine Polesky and Edwina Kiecker; brothers Maynard, Rev. Bernhardt Polesky and Walden.
He was born July 8, 1928 in Martinsburg Township, Renville County, to Hugo E. and Hildagard C. (Buboltz) Polesky. He grew up in Martinsburg Township and attended rural school. He lived and farmed in Martinsburg Township.

Dr. Marcus C. Bushard, 83, of Point Loma, Calif., died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001 in Point Loma, Calif.
Services are 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at Holy Cross Mausoleum in Point Loma,.
Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm is in charge of local notifications.
He is survived by his daughter, Regina Goss; sons, M. Stephen, Christopher, Charles, and Paul; nine grandchildren, and one great-grandchild; brother, Donald Bushard of Minneapolis.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty in 1989. He was a native of New Ulm. He left the family farm in 1935 to attend college. He graduated from St. Thomas College in St. Paul and St. Louis Medical School. He did his internship at St. Vincent's Hospital in Los Angles.
Memorials preferred to Sacred Heart Academy (Education Fund), St. Louis University,(School of Medicine), and the Diabetes Association.

Leona Gewerth, 73, of Morton, died Friday, Aug. 31, 2001, at the Wood Dale Nursing Horne, Redwood Falls.
Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Catholic Church, Morton, with burial in St. John's Calvary Cemetery, Morton.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Wednesday with a parish prayer service at 6:30 p.m. at Nelson-Martin Funeral Home, Redwood Falls, and Thursday at the church, one hour prior to the Mass.
She is survived by her husband, Alvin of Morton; sons, Raymond and wife Tammy of Redwood Falls, Melvin and wife Julie of Morton, Dennis of Delhi; daughter, Diane of Atwater; nine grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Mary Lou Bailey of Olivia, Evelyn and Helen both of Morton; brothers-in-law, Kenny Elg of Comfrey, and Loren HaIder of Bird Island.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Alvera Halder.
She was born on April 26, 1928, at Springfield to Wenzel Jr. and Rose (Welsch) Vogel. She grew up in Wabasso and attended St. Anne's Catholic Schools in Elementary. She graduated from Wabasso High School. She married Alvin Gewerth on May 5, 1956, at St. Anne's Catholic Church, Wabasso. They farmed near Wabasso until 1969 when they moved to Morton. She helped clean the church and the parish house. She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Morton, St. Monica's Catholic Aid of St. Anne's Catholic Church, in Wabasso and the Morton Senior Citizens.

Lydia Grochow, of Gaylord died Thursday. Aug. 30, 2001, at the Lakeview Home in Gaylord.
Services are 2 p.m., Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church (Mountville), rural Gaylord with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today and 7:30 a.m. to noon Monday at the Egesdal Funeral Home, Gaylord and Monday at the church, one hour prior to the service.
She is survived by her son, Maynard and wife Sharon) of Gaylord; daughter-in-law, Dorothy Grochow of Gaylord; four grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her spouse in 1983; parents; son, Wilford; two brothers and four sisters.
She was born April 17, 1903, in Transit Township, Sibley County, to Henry and Lorentena (Barfknecht) Schulz. She married Frank Grochow in 1921 at St. John's Lutheran Church (Mountville), rural Gaylord. They farmed in Dryden Township Sibley Co. They retired in 1964 and moved to Gaylord. In 1984 she became a resident of the Gaylord Lakeview Home. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and Ladies Mission Society.

Sylvester "Syl" Hornick, 87, of Comfrey, died Friday, Aug. 31, 2001, at his home in Mulligan Township.
Services are 10 a.m. Monday at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Comfrey with burial in St. Raphael's Catholic Cemetery, Springfield.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today and 7:30-9:30 a.m. Monday at Sturm Funeral Home, Comfrey. A parish prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Survivors are his daughter, Marcia Weber of Comfrey; four grandsons; sisters, Lucille Sellner of Sleepy Eye and Celestine Soupir of Wimbledon, N.D.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Catherine; brothers, Bernard, Thomas. Clarence, Albert, and Ambrose; and sister, Helen Mathiowetz.
He was born May 8, 1914, in Mulligan Township, Brown County, to Anton and Sophie (Meidl) Hornick. He attended District 70 country school in Mulligan Township. He did farm work in Brown County. He married Catherine Sophie Fecker on April,10 1939, at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Comfrey. The couple lived in Sleepy Eye until 1941, then in the Darfur area until buying their farm in 1943. In 1950 he was Brown County Conservation Farmer of the Year. He was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church, Comfrey.

Charles Larkin, 80, of Madelia, died Friday, Aug. 31, 2001 at Madelia Community Hospital.
Services are 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Madelia with burial in Calvary Cemetery, Madelia.
Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Monday at Pilgrim Funeral Home, Madelia with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. and Tuesday at the funeral home from noon to 1:15 p.m.
Survivors include his wife, Vida; daughters, Deborah Tatro and husband Mike, Susan Kelsey and husband Steve, all of Madelia; sons, Mark and wife Nancy of Delano and Mike and wife Maria of Waconia; 15 grandchildren; sister Helen McMonagle and husband Gene of Madelia.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and a brother.
He was born Aug. 6, 1921, in Madelia to Charles and Edith (Rooney) Larkin. He grew up in Madelia and Star Prairie, Wis., graduating from Madelia High School in 1939. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1942-45. He worked in construction for several years. On May 14, 1949, he married Vida Burgeson at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Madelia, He worked for the City of Madelia beginning in 1955 for 30 years. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and served on St. Mary's School Board. He was active in the Boy Scout program as a Scoutmaster and on the Scout Committee. He drove for Senior Transportation and served on the Watonwan County Senior Citizen Transportation Board. He was also a member of the Madelia VFW and American Legion Post.

Ella A. Pagel, 89, Winthrop, died Friday, Aug. 31, 2001, at the Winthrop Good Samaritan Center.
Services are 11 a.m.. Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Bismarck Township, with burial in the St. John's Lutheran Church Cemetery.
Visitation is 4-9 p.m. today and 7:30-8:30 a.m. Monday at Dalin-Hantge Funeral Chapel, Winthrop and Monday at the church, one hour prior to the service.
She is survived by sons, Dennis and wife Rozella of Winthrop, Roger and Lois of Winthrop; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; sister Marvel Johnson and her husband, Roy of Winthrop; sister-in-law, Ruth Grochow of Maple Plaine and many nieces, nephews and friends
She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Emma Grochow; husband, Leo; brothers, Fred, Arthur, Henry and Herbert; sisters Mabel Schlender, Martha Eggert and Elizabeth Grunewaldt.
She was born Aug. 1, 1912, in Bismarck Township, Sibley County, to Herman and Emma (Lickfett) Grochow. She attended school in Bismarck Township. On June 14, 1932, she married Leo Pagel in Bismarck Township. They farmed in Bismarck Township until 1967. He died Nov. 21, 1967. She belonged to St. John's Lutheran Church in Bismarck Township. On Dec. 24, 1997, she became a resident of the Good Samaritan Home in Arlington and transferred to the Winthrop Good Samaritan Home on March 6, 1998.

Mary Rasmussen, 89, Sanborn, died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001 at her home.
Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church, Sanborn with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church.
She is survived by her son Frank Owen of Sanborn; grandson, Edward of Browerville; brothers, Marshall and Carrie Owen of Hopkinsville, Ky. and Edward Owen of Hopkinsville, Ky.; and nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1960; and sister, Lillian Owen Larson in 1965.
She was born Nov. 10, 1911, to Thomas and Vera (Weaver) Owen in Hopkinsville, Ky. She began teaching piano and organ at the age of 16. She attended high school and Bethel College in Hopkinsville, Ky. She worked as a telephone operator and did secretarial work before marriage. On Nov. 9, 1942, she married Frank J. Rasmussen in Little Rock Ark. She worked for Blanchard Seed Corn Co. near Fox Lake. They moved to Sanborn in 1944 and she later worked as secretary for 5 Star Creamery substation at Sanborn. She also taught piano and organ. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Sanborn, Order of the Eastern Star in Sanborn and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Bernadine 'Bernie' Knisley, 73 of Olivia, died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001 at the Renville County Hospital.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Olivia with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 5-8 p.m. today with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Dirks-Blem Funeral Home, Olivia, and 9:15-10:15 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
She is survived by her husband Craten; her son, Jeffrey and wife Shirley Knisley of Bird Island; daughters. Phyllis Moudry and her special friend Bill Olson of Olivia, Susan and husband Brad Klinghagen of Olivia; sons, Mark and wife Jane) Knisley of Cortez, Colo. and Micheal and wife Terra Knisley of Cortland, Ohio; 13 grandchildren; five great grandchildren; sisters, Elaine Miller of Benson, Norma and husband Charles Brau of Monona, Iowa, Donna Goblirsch of Tyler, Diane and husband William Doom of Marshall; a brother Linus and wife Ila Suess of Hector; brother-in-law Harry and wife Mabel Knisley of Perry, Iowa and her sisters-in-law Blanche and husband Ben Serbus of Redwood Falls, and Evelyn Knisley of New Ulm.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Betty Fischer, a brother, Anthony Suess and her son-in-law, John Moudry.
She was born May 23, 1928 in Wabasso to Anton and Veronica (Stadick) Suess. She attended school at Leavenworth and then worked in Sleepy Eye. She married Craten A. Knisley May 29, 1947 in Leavenworth. They lived in Olivia, where she was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church and the CCW.

Huxley Ruger Pagel, infant son of Matt and Vicki Pagel, of 727 South Jefferson St., New Ulm, was stillborn on Friday, Aug. 31, 2001 at the New Ulm Medical Center in New Ulm.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
He is survived by his parents Matt and Vicki Pagel of New Ulm, twin brothers, four-year-old Augie and Moxie Pagel; grandparents, Sylvia Ruiz, Bonnie and Lynn Ruiz, and Jerry and Linda Pagel, all of New Ulm; great grandparents, Ordella Pagel of New Ulm, and Kenneth and Betty Anderson of Bayport; and by many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

William Schroepfer, 87, formerly of 1018 S. Front St. in New Ulm, died on Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001, at the Sibley Medical Center in Arlington.
Service are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm, with burial in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery in New Ulm.
Visitation is one hour prior to services on Thursday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm.
He is survived by nephew, LeRoy Madson of Gardner, N.D.; and his senior companions, Mary and Art Paquay of St. George.
He was preceded in death by by his parents; sister, Marie Hoffman; brother, Albert Schroepfer on March 13, 1998; five half sisters; and six half brothers.
He was born April 15, 1914 in New Ulm, to Joseph and Anna (Fleishman) Schroepfer. He had been a resident of the Lafayette Good Samaritan Center in Lafayette and was a resident of the Heritage House in Gaylord at the time of his death. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm.

Warren Musser, 77, of Fairmont, died on Monday, Sept. 3, 2001, at his home in rural Fairmont.
Services are 1:30 p.m. Thursday at First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, in Fairmont, with burial in Lakeside Cemetery.
Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Wednesday and 8-11 a.m. Thursday at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont and one hour prior to services at the church.
He is survived by his wife, Nina, of Fairmont; son, Randy and his wife Marcia of Fairmont; daughter, Sandy Fritz of New Ulm; six granddaughters; brothers, Wilbur and wife Hazel and George and wife Janet, all of Fairmont; sister, Clarice Schuster and husband Edward, of St. Paul; brothers-in-law, Ervin Pietan and wife Irene, of Wells, and Norman Pietan of Mankato; sister-in-law, Eva Jean Musser of Longmont, Colo.; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clair and Vera, brother, Vernon, and son-in-law, Bob Fritz.
He was born June 27, 1924, in Rutland Township, Martin County, to Clair and Vera (Fitz) Musser. He was confirmed in the United Methodist Church in Fairmont, attended Fairmont public schools and graudated from Fairmont High School in 1942. He married Nina Pietan on July 22, 1943, at First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, in Fairmont. He farmed in Silver Lake Township for 15 years and was a field supervisor for Stokely-Van Camp in Fairmont for 20 years. He was also employed as the caretaker at Lakeside Cemetery in Fairmont for several years. He was a member of the First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, Martin County Historical Society and Partners in Education.

Lois Anderson, 77, of Walnut Grove, died Monday, Sept. 3, 2001, at Prairie View Health Care Center, Tracy.
Services are 11 a.m. Friday at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Walnut Grove, with burial in Calvary Cemetery.
Visitation will be on 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the church.
She is survived by her husband, Vince; sons, Gary and Larry and wife Kathy; daughter, Julie and husband Larry Gregg; stepson, Bruce Mix; eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, three brothers and a sister.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three siblings.
She was born Jan. 31, 1924,at Heron Lake, to Guy and Esther (Myers) Hanson. She attended school at Heron Lake, then moved to Tracy to work at the Old Hospital as a nurse's aid and help her aunt and uncle in their restaurant called "The Eat Shop." She married Vince Anderson on Aug. 27, 1946. They moved to Walnut Grove. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, the circles and the American Legion Auxiliary.
