John 'Jack' G. Schumacher, 61, of Sleepy Eye, died Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001, at his home.
Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Church of the Japanese Martyrs, Leavenworth, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today and 7:30-8:30 a.m. Friday at Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye, and 9:30-11 a.m. Friday at the church. A parish prayer service is 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
He is survived by his wife, Carol, of Leavenworth; sons and daughters-in-law, Tim and Kim, of New Prague, Ken and JoAnn, of Sleepy Eye, Allen and Susanne, and Pat, all of New Ulm; daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Paul Wieneke, of New Ulm; 10 grandchildren; mother, Frances Schumacher of Sleepy Eye; brothers and sisters-in-law; Cliff and Bernette, of Sleepy Eye, Sylvan and Donna, of Sleepy Eye, Eugene and Marguerite, of Emily, Bernard and Kathy, of Warba; sisters and brother-in-law, Doris Johnson, of Arden Hills, Susan and Jeff Pelzel, of Sleepy Eye; sister-in-law, Lenora, of Sleepy Eye; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Benjamin; brothers, Robert and Marvin; and brother-in-law, Robert Johnson.
He was born Nov. 15, 1939, in Sleepy Eye, to Benjamin and Frances (Poss) Schumacher. He attended school in Leavenworth and St. Mary's School in Sleepy Eye. He married Carol Neidecker on Oct. 10, 1961, at Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, New Ulm. They lived and farmed on the home place in Leavenworth Township. He was a member of the Church of the Japanese Martyrs and other community organizations.

Helen M. Baier, 94, formerly of 300 N. Broadway in New Ulm, died Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001, at Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm.
Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm, with burial in the Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. today and 7:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday at Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. The Christian Mothers Society will pray the rosary at 4 p.m. today at Cathedral. St. Elizabeth's Catholic Aid Council will pray the rosary at 6:30 p.m., and there will be a parish prayer service at 7:30 p.m., today at the funeral home.
She is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Ron Gruber of rural New Ulm; son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Carole Baier of New Ulm; four grandchildren; and six greatgrandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Rudolph Baier in August 1964; sisters, Celeste Ernsterhoff, Bernice Gulden; and brothers, Tony Thill and Sylvester Thill.
She was born Sept. 1, 1907, in Lamars, Iowa, to Matthew and Margaret (Wupperfield) Ernsterhoff. She married Rudolph Baier on March 5, 1935, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in St. Paul. They lived in White Bear Lake and then moved to Lafayette Township, Nicollet County, where they farmed. They moved to Searles and then New Ulm. After moving to New Ulm she worked at the Wearwell Garment Factory, Eibners Restaurant and then Herberger's as a sales clerk until she retired in 1973. She was a resident of the Sleepy Eye Care Center in 1995-1999. In 1991 she moved to the Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm. She was a member of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm, the Christian Mothers Society and St. Elizabeth's Catholic Aid Council.

Floyd R. Ganske, 80, of Mukwonago, Wis., died on Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001, at Linden Grove Nursing Home, Mukwonago.
Services are at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mount Olive Lutheran Church, 211 Main St., Mukwonago, with burial at Troy Lakes Cemetery.
Visitation is noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name to Waukesha Memorial Hospital Building Fund, Linden Grove Nursing Home, Mukwonago, Mount Olive Lutheran Church, Mukwonago, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Waupun, Vernon Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mukwonago or the Christian Living Center, Waupun.
Schmidt and Bartelt - Van Valin Funeral and Cremation Services is handling arrangements.
He is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Gail and Ken Davis of Mukwonago, and Lynn and Hale Hartgerink of Waupun, three grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law, Bernice and Verlyn Truax of Skiatook, Okla., Ethel and Harold Roth of New Ulm, and Marlene and Dave Piere of Winthrop; sister-in-law, Mabel Ganske of Hewitt; and special friend, Dottie Johnson, of East Troy.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; parents; and a brother, Wallace.
He was born Aug. 27, 1921, in Seigel Township, to Herbert and Sophie (Goblirsch) Ganske. He married Dorothy Anna Zupfer on July 11, 1945, in New Ulm. He was a WWII army veteran, a member of the group known as the Iron Men of Metz. He received the Bronze Star. He was a meat cutter for the former Plankington Packing Co. in Milwaukee and was also a union carpenter. He was a member of the Sno-Snoops Snowmobile Club in Mukwonago and was in charge of the Troy Lakes Cemetery for more than 30 years. He was a member and past commander of the VFW Post 7510 in East Troy and a member of Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Mukwonago.

Violet R. Dahn, 85, of Litchfield, died Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001, at Meeker County Memorial Hospital in Litchfield.
Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Litchfield, with burial in Ripley Cemetery in Litchfield.
Visitation is 5-7 p.m. today at Johnson- Hagglund Funeral Home in Litchfield, and one hour prior to services at the church.
She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Eugene and Lucy Dahn of Tuscon, Ariz., and Douglas and Mary Dahn of Clinton, Mich.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; brothers, Leonard and Emmett (Bud) Otto, both of Morgan; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore; parents, Robert and Emma Otto; and sister, Gertrude Johnson.
She was born Aug. 8, 1916, in Eden Township, Brown County, to Robert and Emma (Raddatz) Otto. She attended country school through eighth grade in rural Morgan. She married Theodore Dahn on April 30, 1939, at Zion Lutheran Church. They lived in Minneapolis until July 1, 1977 when they moved to Litchfield.
She was an active member of St. Pau'ls Evangelical Lutheran Church in Litchfield.

Kim M. Thompson, 46, of Brookings, S.D., died Monday, Oct. 29, 2001, at Midwest Regional Medical Center in Zion, Ill.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Leganger Lutheran Church in Toronto, S.D.
Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Friday at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in White, S.D.
She is survived by daughters and son-in-law, Christi and Bruce Wilts of White, S.D., and Sarah Thompson of Brookings, S.D.; three grandchildren and three stepgrandchildren; parents, Robert and Mavis Ripley, of Pipestone; sister, Pamela DeKraai, of Willmar; brothers and sisters-in-law, Joel and Vaughn Ripley of Toronto, S.D., Scott and Mary Ripley of River Falls, Wis., and James and Lori Ripley of Canton, S.D.; friends, Linda Berkenpas, of Lake Benton Francis Anderson, of White, S.D.; and aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Frank and Dora Powell, and Harley and Gladys Ripley; and aunt and uncle, Rose and Harvey.
She was born Feb. 24, 1955, in Pipestone, to Robert and Mavis (Powell) Ripley. She grew up on a farm 11 miles north of Pipestone and attended Verdi Public Schools, graduating from high school in 1973. She attended Mankato Technical College and became a licensed practical nurse. She married Wayne Thompson on Sept. 27, 1974, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Courtland. After marriage, she provided day care in her home in New Ulm. In 1987, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She divorced and attended Minnesota State University-Mankato. She graduated summa cum laude with a B.S./ M.S. in communication disorders. She worked as a Speech-Language-Vision and Hearing Specialist, supervising special education teachers in Rapid City before moving to White, S.D., and working as a professor and clinical supervisor at South Dakota State University, She later taught at Hendricks Elementary and started a partnership business teaching kids and adults until her cancer reoccurred.

Anne Kratz, 83, of Robbinsdale, formerly of Comfrey and Springfield, died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2001, at the Crystal Lake Good Samaritan Home.
Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at New Hope Lutheran Church, Comfrey with burial in Faith Lutheran Cemetery, Comfrey.
Visitation is at the church, one hour prior to the service.
She is survived by a son, Wayne and wife JoAnne Kratz of Maple Grove; daughters, Diane and husband Jim Deutsch of Maple Grove and Jane and husband Bill Isaacson of Maple Grove; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and a brother, Ivar and Leona Goltz of Hanska.
She is preceded in death by four siblings in Sweden; her parents; husband, Art; son, Donavon; brothers, Oscar and Bill Goltz and sisters, Emma, Martha, and Elsie.
She was born March 11, 1918, in Adrian Township to John and Karin Goltz. They came to the U.S. from Lund, Sweden in 1912. She married Arthur Kratz on Nov. 18, 1943, in West Sveadahl Lutheran Church. They farmed on the Kratz farmstead until retiring in the late 1970s. They moved to Comfrey Apartments in 1998 and following the tornado which hit Comfrey, they moved to Halter Estates in Springfield and to the Twin Cities in 1999. She was a former member of West Sveadahl and Faith Lutheran Churches and is a current member of New Hope Lutheran Church in Comfrey. She participated in Ladies Aid, Comfrey Garden Club, and church activities.

Earl Kiecker, 93, of Gibbon died Friday, Nov. 2, 2001, at the Fairfax Community Home in Fairfax.
Services are 1:30 p.m. Monday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Gibbon, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Sunday and 7:30-11:30 a.m. Monday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in Gibbon, and one hour prior to services at the church.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Edith and Lester G. Ulrich of Savage; two granddaughters; a sister-in-law, Ella (Mrs. Clarence W.) Kiecker of Fairfax; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Melvin and Bernetta Meyer of Gibbon; and two nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Edna Kiecker on Feb. 20, 1998; brothers, Gilbert A. and Clarence W. Kiecker; and a sister-in-law, Orpha Kiecker.
He was born Sept. 17, 1908, in Wellington Township, Renville County, to Emil R. and Marie (Waknitz) Kiecker. He graduated from Fairfax High School in 1928 and attended the Mankato Commercial College graduating in 1929 with a degree in Office Management. He married Edna Meyer on June 4, 1941, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Moltke Township, Sibley County. They lived in Wellington Township, Renville County until moving into Gibbon in 1948. He worked for Koppen Chevrolet Garage in Gibbon from 1930 until it closed in 1972. He was a volunteer and was very active with the Senior Citizens in Gibbon and had served on the Gibbon City Council for many years. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Gibbon and served on the church council.

Henry Schaefer, 87, of 1005 Southridge Rd. in New Ulm and formerly of the Swan Lake area, died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001, at Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm.
Mass of Christian burial is 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm, with burial in the Church of the Visitation Catholic Cemetery, Swan Lake.
Visitation is 4 - 8 p.m. Monday and 7:30 - 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. There will be a combined rosary by the St. Peter Knights of Columbus, the St. Joseph Catholic Aid Council, and the Catholic Order of Foresters at 6 p.m.; a parish prayer service at 7 p.m. and a family rememberance service at 7:45 p.m. all on Monday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm.
Henry is survived by his wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Schaefer of New Ulm; daughters Susan Schaefer of Minneapolis and Joni Heller and her husband, Bryan of Stillwater; a son, Mark Schaefer and his wife, Sandy, of Fairfax; a step-daughter Lori Wilfahrt and her husband, Jeff, of Rosemount; step-sons David Reinhart and his wife, Joanne of Bloomington and Steve Reinhart and his wife Marilyn of New Ulm; six grandchildren; eight step grandchildren; two step great grandchildren; sisters, Aurelia Boettger of New Ulm, Esther Koss of Hopkins, and Sister M. Sharon of Fort Wayne, Ind.; brothers James Schaefer and his wife, Annabelle of Nicollet and Father Roman Schaefer of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Marjorie Schaefer on Oct. 4, 1973; brothers Herbert Schaefer, Lawrence Schaefer, and Leo Schaefer; and by a sister, Amelia Boettger Luepke.
He was born Dec. 27, 1913, in Granby Township, Nicollet County, to Leo and Amelia (Bushard ) Schaefer. He attended country school in Granby Township, Nicollet County. He married Marjorie Gilbertson on June 6, 1946, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Middle Lake. They farmed in Granby Township, Nicollet County. After the death of his first wife he married Elizabeth (Saffert) Reinhart on Nov. 12, 1977 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm. He continued to farm in Granby Township, Nicollet County until 1980. In 1986 they moved into New Ulm. He worked at the ASCS office in St. Peter for thirty four years. He was a member of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm; a fourth degree Knights of Columbus in St. Peter; the St. Joseph Catholic Aid Council and the Catholic Order of Foresters, both in New Ulm. He was a past treasurer of the Church of the Visitation in Swan Lake. For the past nineteen months he was a resident of the Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm.
In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to the Oak Hills Living Center.

Esther A. Stelter Beilke, 83, formerly of 917 9th S. St. in New Ulm, died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001, at Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm.
Services are 11 a.m. Monday at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm, with burial in the Highland Home Cemetery in Jamestown, N. D.
Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church on Monday. The Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm is in charge of arrangements.
She is survived her daughters and sons-in-law, Janeth and Robert Bitter of Oakfield, Wis., Diane and Ken Hartman of Maple Grove and Bonnie and Rockie Freeland of Linwood; a son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Anne Stelter of Racine, Wis.; 12 grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband Victor Stelter in May 1955; second husband Maynard Beilke on June 6, 1999; a sister and three brothers.
She was born April 9, 1918, in Delmont, S. D. to Ed and Ella (Lehrkamp) Patzer. She married Victor Stelter on June 27, 1939 at the Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Jamestown, N. D. They lived in Jamestown, N. D. where she was a homemaker. She moved to New Ulm in 1957. She worked in the kitchen at the Dr. Martin Luther College and the later at the J.C. Penney's Store where she managed the shoe department. She was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm and had been a resident of Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm since 1995.

Nick Nelson, 17, of Redwood Falls, died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001, at Redwood Falls Area Hospital.
Mass of Christian burial is 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Redwood Falls, with burial in the Redwood Falls Cemetery.
Visitation is 5-8 p.m. today at Nelson-Martin Funeral Home in Redwood Falls with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. and continues Tuesday at the funeral home from 8:30-9:30 a.m.
He is survived by his parents, Steve and Deb Nelson of Redwood Falls; sisters and brother, Jami of Eden Prairie; Christopher "Bud" and friend Melissa, and son Payton of Redwood Falls; Katie, Sirena and Tiffany all at home, Redwood Falls; half-sister, Martha Vail of Eau Claire, Wis.; maternal grandparents, Arnold and Irene Kaufenberg and paternal grandmother, Lucille Nelson, all of Redwood Falls; aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Orville Nelson.
He was born Dec. 11, 1983, in Redwood Falls to Steven and Deborah (Kaufenberg) Nelson. He attended local schools. He had worked at the local Burger King. He was a member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church.

Filbert Peterson, 100, of Comfrey, died Nov. 3, 2001, at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at New Hope Lutheran Church in Comfrey.
Visitation is 4:30-8 p.m. today and continues 7:30-8:30 a.m. Tuesday at Sturm Funeral Home Chapel in Comfrey and one hour prior to the service at the church.
He is survived by sons LeRoy and wife, Caro lof Comfrey, Roger and wife Nellie of Comfrey; stepdaughter, Margie and A.W. Francis of Park Rapids; stepdaughters-in-law, Shirley Peterson of Phoenix, Ariz., Louise Peterson of Salina, Kan.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents; wives, Minnie, Dorothy, Hilma; daughters, Marcel and Dorene; stepsons Clifford and Charles Peterson; stepgrandson Allan Peterson; brothers, Edner and Richard; and a sister, Stella Youngren.
He was born on Sept. 3, 1901, in Bashaw Township, Brown County, to John August and Johanna (Peterson) Peterson. He attended school in Comfrey. He lived and farmed on his parents' homestead near Comfrey. He married Minnie Brand in 1929. After her death, He married Dorothy Wing in 1947. Dorothy preceded him in death, and he married Hilma Sandberg Peterson in 1955. He was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church, which is now New Hope Lutheran Church in Comfrey.

Doris F. Suess, 71, of 927 N. Valley St., in New Ulm died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001 at her home.
Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm with burial at a later date.
Visitation is 5-7 p.m. today and 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. St. Elizabeth's Catholic Aid Council will pray the rosary at 5:30 p.m., and there will be a parish prayer service at 6:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
She is survived by her husband Walter A. Suess of New Ulm; daughter and son-in-law, Mary K. and Randy Chartier of New Ulm; son, Patrick Suess and and his fiancee Pamela Ferguson, both of New Ulm; granddaughter, Caitlin Chartier of New Ulm; sister, Genevieve Eisele of Bloomington; brother, Joseph W. Tauer of New Ulm; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son, David W. Suess on July 5, 1991; and sister, Kathryn Mass on Sept. 23, 1947.
She was born March 10, 1930, in New Ulm to Joseph J. and Cecelia (Donnay) Tauer. She graduated from Holy Trinity High School in 1948. She married Walter A. Suess on April 21, 1953, at Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm. She worked at Stork Brothers, Wearwell Garment, and then 3M until her retirement in 1993. She was a member of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity and the St. Elizabeth's Catholic Aid Council.

Edmund Plaetz, 73, of New London, and formerly of Redwood Falls, died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.
Mass of Christian burial is 11 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Lakes Catholic Catholic Church in Spicer. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at Johnson Funeral Home in New London with a 5:30 p.m. rosary and a 7:30 p.m. parish prayer service. Visitation continues one hour prior to the services at the church on Wednesday.
He is survived by his wife, Grace; daughters, LuAnn. (Chris) Hoffmann of Hutchinson and Krissy Plaetz of New London; and three grandchildren, Samantha, Elizabeth and Daniel.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Russ in July of 2001; sister, Theresa Woelfel; and one brother and three sisters in infancy.
He was born on May 25, 1928, in Wabasso to Joseph and Bertha (Zeug) Plaetz. He graduated from Echo High School in 1946. On Sept. 2, 1967, he married Grace Neudecker in Clements. They lived in Lucan, Minnesota where he owned a repair shop. They moved to Redwood Falls in 1970 where he worked for the Redwood County Highway Department. They moved to New London in 1992.
He was a member of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church and former member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Redwood Falls, where he was active as a lay minister, past parish council president, usher, lector and a member of the Catholic Aid.

Melva LaPlante, 89, of Stewart, died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001, at Buffalo Lake Healthcare Center.
Mass of Christian burial is 10 a.m. Friday at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Stewart with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Thursday at Hughes Funeral Home in Stewart with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service and continues one hour before the service Friday at the church.
