Benjamin Bottema

Benjamin “Ben” Bottema, 89, of Bingham Lake died May 11, 2001, in New Ulm.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Windom with Father James Berning officiating.

Special music was provided by Ed Schneider, vocalist; and Colleen Ortmann, organist.

Pallbearers were Bruce Nagorske, Duane Dunkelberger, Jay Smith, Myron Bishman, Rodney Einck and Bruce Bennett.

Interment was at Lakeview Cemetery in Windom.

Anderson-Schmidt Funeral Home of Windom was in charge of the funeral arrangements.

A Knights of Columbus rosary was held Monday at Anderson-Schmidt Funeral Home.

Bernard “Ben” Bottema was born Oct. 2, 1911, to Reinard and Anna (Jurgens) Bottema in Grundy Center, Iowa. Following Reinard’s death in 1918, Anna moved the family to Minnesota, settling in the Bergen area. The children received their schooling in Jackson County.

Ben worked for many area farmers and businessmen and spent some time in the CCC camp during World War II.

In 1942, Ben married Terena Roll at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church rectory in Windom. They farmed together west of Windom with the Bill Rae family.

In 1947, they moved to Lakeside Township, south of Bingham Lake and remained there until retirement in 1974. During that time, Ben was a dealer for SAR seed corn for several years.

After building a home in Bingham Lake, Ben worked part-time for area farmers during peak times.

Ben was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Windom and a member of the Knights of Columbus.

He also enjoyed visiting neighbors, playing cards and gardening.

He was preceded in death by brothers Jake, Bill, Cornelius, John and Tom; and sisters, Angeline, Elizabeth and Catherine.

Survivors include his wife, Terena, of Bingham Lake; a son David of Bingham Lake; a daughter, Kathy (Nanno) Schoneman of Bingham Lake; two grandchildren; and a brother, Ted (Verna) Bottema of Northfield.

Ralph Ward

Ralph Ward, 81, of Carpentersville, Ill., died April 30, 2001, at Asta Care Center in Elgin, Ill.

Services were held recently at Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Schaumburg, Ill.

Countryside Funeral Home and Crematory of Streamwood/Schaumburg was in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Ralph W. Ward was born Jan. 28, 1920, in Davenport, Iowa. He was a 1939 graduate of Boys Town.

Ralph also was a World War II Navy Air Corps veteran, serving 4˝ years. He received Presidential Citations for extraordinary heroism in action against enemy forces.

He was a charter member of the Chicago Chapter of the Boys Town National Alumni Assn., and a member of Lord of Life Lutheran Church and its choir.

Survivors include his wife, JoAnn (Eng) Ward, formerly of Westbrook; his children, Kevin Ward of Chicago, and Holly (David) Baca of Schaumburg; and four grandchildren.

Duane Johnson

Duane Johnson, 55, of Lamberton died May 12, 2001, from injuries sustained in a vehicle accident east of Jeffers.

Services were held Tuesday at Old Westbrook Lutheran Church near Westbrook with Rev. Michael Stangeland officiating.

Special music was provided by Elizabeth Johnson, vocalist; and Shirley Iverson, organist.

Pallbearers were Charles Taylor, Randy Swenson, Bruce Jensen, Brian Moravec, Jeff Weis, Ron Olsen, Timothy Osland and Ron Lien.

Honorary pallbearers were his grandchildren, Scott and Tiffany Johnson, Levi and Jessica Brummer, Shane and Morgyn Johnson, Kate Ketter, Jaymee Ruprecht and Landon Evans.

Interment was at Old Westbrook Cemetery near Westbrook.

Duane Ellis Johnson was born June 3, 1945, to Ellis and Dorothy (Jensen) Johnson in Heron Lake. He was baptized and later confirmed at Old Westbrook Lutheran Church near Westbrook.

He received his education at Storden Public School, graduating from Storden High School in 1963.

In 1964, Duane married Sheila Einertson. Since then, they have lived in the Storden and Lamberton area. Duane farmed and later was custodian at the Lamberton School. Most recently he was driving truck for Stavnes Trucking.

Duane was a lifelong member of Old Westbrook Lutheran Church.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and working with his horses. He was also a member of the Storden Saddle Tramps.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ellis Johnson; and a granddaughter, Taylor Cowan.

Survivors include his wife, Sheila of Lamberton; mother, Dorothy Johnson of Lamberton; three sons and three daughters, Allan (Cathy) Johnson of Lamberton, Lisa (Ben) Brummer of Westbrook, Jay Johnson of Storden, Jody (Dennis) Cowan of Avoca, Kevin Johnson and friend, Tanya, of Lamberton, and Erin (Abraham) Ketter of Mankato; nine grandchildren; close family friends, Lisa Conners and Alissa Doom; one brother, Doug (Linda) Johnson of Storden; and two sisters, Linda (Arlen) Thomas of Tracy and Brenda (Todd) Anderson of Lamberton.

Lorraine Meisser

Lorraine Meisser, 85, of North St. Paul, formerly of Windom, died May 8, 2001.

Services were held Friday at Sandberg Mortuary in North St. Paul.

Interment was at Elmhurst Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Ed Meisser of North St. Paul; her children, Joan (Jack) Ruppel of North St. Paul and John (Kay) Meisser of Burnsville; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Martha Hallum

Martha Hallum, 84, of Windom, formerly of Heron Lake, died May 13, 2001, at Luverne Hospice.

Funeral arrangements are pending with Anderson-Schmidt Funeral Home of Windom.

Robert Morgan

Robert Morgan, 86, of Windom died April 21, 2001, at Sogge Good Samaritan Center in Windom.

Memorial services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m., at First United Methodist Church in Windom with Rev. Jeffrey Hansen officiating.

Interment with full military honors will follow at Lakeview Cemetery in Windom.

Visitation will be held Thursday for one prior to the services at the church in Windom.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to First United Methodist Church in Windom, or the Cottonwood County Historical Society.

Anderson-Schmidt Funeral Home of Windom is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Robert Gale Morgan was born May 23, 1914, to Gale H. and Grace (McDonald) Morgan in Windom. He attended Windom Public Schools, graduating from Windom High School in 1933, and attended Iowa State University School of Engineering.

In 1942, Robert enlisted in the U.S. Army and served with the 125th Ordinance Heavy Maintenance Tank Company in the U.S. Theater of Operation. He also served in the European Theater of Operation attached to George Patton’s 3rd Army with the rank of staff sergeant.

In 1947, Robert married Bessie Mae Taylor at the First United Methodist Church parsonage in Windom.

Robert was employed by the Cottonwood County Highway Dept. as a draftsmen and surveyor until 1959, when he was appointed Assistant County Highway Engineer. He retired in 1979.

Bessie died in 1997. Robert continued to live on his own until entering Sogge Good Samaritan Center in February.

Robert was a member of First United Methodist Church in Windom, American Legion Post 206, Windom Golden “K” Kiwanis Club and the Cottonwood County Historical Society.

In addition to his wife Bessie, Robert was preceded in death by one brother.

Survivors include his daughter, Roberta (Richard) Wright of Falmouth, Maine.

Marie Zimmer

Marie Zimmer, 75, of Windom died May 8, 2001, at Sogge Good Samaritan Center in Windom.

Services were held Friday at Eifert Funeral Home in Mt. Lake with Rev. Jeff Boschman officiating.

Interment was at Mt. Lake Cemetery in Mt. Lake.

Marie Joyce Linscheid was born March 3, 1926, to Theodore and Bertha (Linscheid) Linscheid in rural Butterfield. She received her education in local schools, graduating from Butterfield High School in 1944.

She lived in California where she worked as nanny, then later moved back to Butterfield, where she worked at Butterfield Foods for several years.

In 1953, she married Herbert Zimmer in Butterfield. The couple farmed in various communities in Cottonwood and Watonwan counties.

Marie enjoyed playing the piano and accordian, bluegrass music, traveling and dancing.

She was preceded in death by her husband Herbert in 1989, a brother, Bud Linscheid, and an infant son, Dusty Lee Zimmer.

Survivors include two sons, Ricky (Elaine) Zimmer of Campo, Calif.; and Rocky (Monica) Zimmer of Bingham Lake; two daughters, Sandy (Rex) Pounds of Brighton, Colo.; and Shelly (Stephen Gainey) Zimmer of LaPorte, Texas; six grandchildren; two brothers, Glen Linsheid and Joy (Dolores) Linscheid, all of Butterfield.
