Joseph Israel Renaud
Joseph Israel Renaud, who was a Proctor resident since 1907, died Sun., Mar. 11, 2001 in Duluth. He was 97.

He was born in Bathgate (Neche Pembino County), North Dakota. He had worked as a carman for the DM&IR Railroad for 46 years, retiring in 1968. He was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church, a life member of the Knights of Columbus #5142, a former member of the Carmen’s Union, and the DM&IR Veterans Employees Assn. He was also an avid fisherman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers, three sisters, and his wife Mina (Hendrickson) Renaud in 1989.

He is survived by his brothers O. George (Iris) of Hermantown and Alphonse (Pina) of San Antonio, Texas, his sisters Lorraine Graves and Rose Anderson, both of Proctor, and many nieces and nephews.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery. Memorials to St. Rose Catholic Church would be appreciated. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Ina E. Larson
Ina E. Larson, who had lived in Munger since 1918 owning and operating the Munger Fairway Store with her husband, died Mon., Mar. 12 in a Duluth hospital. She was 92.

She was born in Vasternorrlands, Sweden. She came to the U.S. in 1911 and had lived in Munger since 1918. She married Gust M. Larson on Sept. 3, 1927.

She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church, Munger and Munger Senior Citizens. She enjoyed flower gardening, playing cards, stamp collecting and spending time with her family, especially grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Gust in 1982 and sons, Leonard and Ralph.

Survivors include her daughter, Joan (Robert) Miller of Superior, a brother, Robert (Jeanne) Lundgren of Duluth; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Fri. in Hope Lutheran Church, 4093 Munger Shaw Road, Munger with Rev. Walter Lehenbauer officiating. Inurnment will be in Solway Cemetery. Memorials to Hope Lutheran Church, Munger or Nopeming Care Center Remodeling Fund, would be appreciated. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Ragna V. Salo
Ragna V. Salo succumbed to cancer Mon., Mar. 5, 2001 in her Bergstrom Junction Rd. home. She was 52.

The Saginaw resident was born in Baltimore. She grew up in Ohio, graduating in 1966 from Yearling Whitehall High School. Ragna lived in Saginaw for the past 32 years. She was a homemaker and had received nursing assistant training at Duluth Technical College. She lived with and cared for her grandmother, Ragna Larsen, for many years until her death in 1997. Ragna was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Twig.

She is survived by sons Gary Kilbourn of Saginaw, Michael Kilbourn of Cloquet, Steven (Brandi) Kilbourn and Lars Salo, both of Saginaw, her mother May (John) Stoll of Saginaw, brothers and sisters Larry Legutko of Duluth, James (Lorraine) Stoll of Chaska, Minn., Diana Armstrong of Proctor, Donna (Rick) LaDuke of Saginaw and David (Maggie) Stoll of Newport News, Va., grandchildren Austin, Mikey, Brenna and Matthew, many nieces and nephews, and many others who affectionately called her “mom”.

Burial was in Grand Lake Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Gail Poppenberg Korcha
Gail Poppenberg Korcha, who was born and raised in Proctor, is mourning the death of her husband, Edwin Frank Korcha. He was 67.

He was a graduate of the University of Minnesota, Duluth class of 1960 and a former surveyor for the Department of Engineering, City of Duluth.

A longtime resident of California and educator for 39 years, Ed was born in Eveleth and stayed close to his Minnesota roots by spending many summers in Duluth and the Iron Range. He served his country in the Korean War.

He is also survived by six children, a sister, and ten grandchildren.

Burial was in Riverside National Cemetery, Riverside, Calif.

Doris Mae Stromlund
Doris Mae Stromlund of Munger Shaw Road, who owned Busy Corner Grocery in the 1950’s and early 1960’s with her former husband Clifford Olafson in Proctor, died peacefully Mon. evening, Mar. 19, 2001 at home after a long battle with lung cancer. She was 74.

She was born in 1926 in East Lake, Minn. to Ted and Christine (Bystrom) Freeman. She graduated from McGregor High School in 1944. Doris obtained certification as a Lab Tech Ass’t from DAVTI in 1972. Until her retirement in 1978, she managed the Hickory Farms store at the Miller Hill Mall. She was over a 20-year member of the Solway Flamettes Ladies Auxiliary and a life member of the VFW Post 3044 Cotton Meadowlands. She served as a St. Louis County 4-H Leader and was a member of the Solway Township Comprehensive Land Use Committee. From 1996-99, she mentored students at Hermantown High School.

She is survived by her husband of 23 years Clare, two daughters, two sons, three brothers, a sister, five grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews and godchildren.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. today (Thurs.) in Bell Brothers Chapel and will continue from 10 until the 11 a.m. services Fri. in Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. West. Pastor David Mork officiating. Burial will be in Solway Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Solway Flamettes, Solway Town Hall, 4029 Munger Shaw Road, Cloquet, Minn. 55720.

Charles J. Marttila
Charles J. Marttila of Floodwood died Sat., Mar. 17, 2001 at the Chris Jensen Health and Rehabilitation Center in Duluth. He was 92.

He was born Jan. 19, 1909 in Floodwood to Alfred and Hanna (Somero) Marttila and was raised in the Floodwood area. He moved to Detroit, Mich. where he met and married Maire Lehtinen on June 29, 1935. They moved to Howell, Mich. where they owned and operated a chicken farm. He moved to Floodwood in 1949 and then moved to Proctor in 1955, where they owned and operated the Gambles Store and he also did carpentry work, retiring in 1967. In his younger years, he was a member of the Civil Air Patrol and also a 50-year member of the Cloquet Eagles Club. He and his wife were instrumental in organizing the Floodwood Senior Citizens Center. He had resided at the Chris Jensen Nursing Home in Duluth for the past three years.

He was preceded in death by his wife Maire in 1995, nine brothers and sisters, and a stepbrother.

Survivors include a daughter Nancy (René) Zied of Green Valley, Ariz., sons Robert (Inge) of Negaunee, Mich., Ronald (Bernadine) of Saginaw, Minn. and Charles (Lisa) of Shoreview, Minn., two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Spring burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery in Floodwood, Minn.

Sharon Lyes
Sharon Lyes of Cloquet, who worked part-time for the Proctor Journal, died Fri., Mar. 16 in a Duluth hospital after a short battle with cancer. She was 51.

She was born Sept. 29, 1949 to John and Emily (Ojala) Hallback. Sharon was a 1967 graduate of Cloquet High School. She married Michael Lyes in 1970.

Sharon was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She enjoyed shopping for antiques, looking for treasures at rummage sales and gardening and loved spending time with her grandchildren. Her wonderful sense of humor will be missed by all who knew her.

She is preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include her husband of 30 years Michael of Cloquet, daughters Tammi Forconi and Stacy Lyes, both of Cloquet, grandchildren Taylor and Kelsey Forconi, sisters Kathleen (Dennis) Johnson, Roberta (William) Johnson and Susan (Clifford) Jackson, all of Cloquet, brothers Donald (Shirley) Hallback, Charles Hallback and Terrance (Donna) Hallback, all of Cloquet, mother-in-law Bernice Persons of Cloquet, and many other relatives and friends.

Spring interment will be in Atkinson Cemetery. Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society.

Margaret J. “Mardy” Pederson
Margaret J. “Mardy” Pederson of North Pike Lake Road died Sun., Mar. 18, 2001, in St. Luke’s Hospital. She was 71.

She was born in Duluth to Joseph and Sophie (Sojka) Janczak. She was a lifelong Duluth and Pike Lake area resident. Mardy was a 1948 graduate of Denfeld High School and had been a homemaker. She had been an employee of Oliver Iron Mining Co. for nine years. She married Howard A. Pederson in Duluth and was a member of St. Josephat National Catholic Church.

Mardy was preceded in death by her parents, a brotherand a sister.

Survivors include her husband Howard, two daughters, two brothers and four sisters, including her twin Marcella (Arthur) Thompson of Esko, two grandchildren, a brother-in-law and a sister-in-law.

Burial was in Sunrise Memorial Park, Hermantown.

Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Clarence K. Nylund Sr.
Services were held last week for Clarence K. Nylund Sr. He died Tues., Mar. 20, 2001 in a Duluth hospital. He was 75.

The Vinland Street resident was born in Wright and moved to Duluth after serving in the Navy during World War II. He was a sergeant for the Duluth Police Department, where he worked for 25 years and retired in 1984. He had previously worked in Western Electric and had also operated Warning Lights Inc.

Clarence had served with the Marine Reserve after World War II and had been a member of Euclid Masonic Lodge 198 AF & AM, Scottish Rite-Valley of Duluth and had been active in the Dune Buggy Patrol and Pipes & Drum Corps in Aad Temple Shrine. He had been a member of West End VFW Post 137, National Rifle Association and Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Proctor.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sigrid and Matt Nylund, and a brother Carl.

Survivors include his wife Gloria, sons Clarence Jr. (Susie) of Saginaw and Richard (Connie) of Superior, a daughter Debra (John) Portesan of Seattle, eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and a future great-grandchild to be born in May.

Burial was in Wright Community Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Alice Catherine Poppenberg Lessard
Services were held last week for Alice Catherine Poppenberg Lessard. She passed away Tues., Mar. 20, 2001 in Duluth. She was 92.

She was born in Duluth on July 11, 1908 to Reihnold and Sarah Englund. She was a lifelong resident of the Proctor and Duluth area and wintered in Brownsville, Texas for 30 years. She graduated from Denfeld High School and the Young and Hurst Business University. She was the executive secretary for Bridgeman Russell Creameries.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Edith, Ethel and Linea, her first husband and father of her children Delbert H. Poppenberg, her second husband Lawrence Nelson and her beloved daughter Lola M. Goerts.

Survivors include her husband Jay Lessard of Nopeming, her daughter Gail Korcha of Yucca Valley, Calif., sons Rodney (Karen) Poppenberg of Island Lake and Phillip (Sandra) Poppenberg of Hermantown, son-in-law Richard Goerts of Lake Havasu, Ariz., brother Robert Englund of Lake Nichols, 16 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Alice has dedicated her life to her family.

Burial was in Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.
