Alice Mabel Zabel
Visitation and services will be held today for Alice Mabel Zabel. The former Proctor resident died Mon., Mar. 26, 2001 in Nopeming Health Care. She was 91.

Alice was born in Mellen, Wis. She was a long time area resident. She worked as a cook for 15 years at the Tourist Cafe. Alice was a loving and dedicated housewife and mother. Her grandchildren were special to her. She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Proctor.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents, husband Roy in 1973, brothers Earl, Bill and Dicky, sisters Violet “Vi”, Leetta “Lee” and Ruby, and a granddaughter Debra Balsness.

Surviving are a daughter Sandra Lynn (Byron E) Mattson of Duluth, granddaughters Teresa (Mark) Bennett and Sheila Mattson of Duluth, nine great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 10 until the 11 a.m. service today (Thurs.) in Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Proctor. Burial will be in Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Diane L. (Moe) Mecklin
A memorial service was held last week for Diane L. (Moe) Mecklin. She died suddenly Tues., Mar. 20, 2001 in a Twin Cities hospital. She was 47.

Diane was born in Duluth Dec. 26, 1953, to Robert G. and Beverly A. Moe. She graduated from Proctor High School and St. Luke’s School of Nursing. She received her bachelor of arts in science at the College of St. Francis, Minneapolis and her master’s degree in management and administration. She worked in St. Luke’s and Miller-Dwan Hospitals in Duluth, North Memorial Hospital in Minneapolis and currently in Fairview Home Care and Hospice in Minneapolis.

On Dec. 4, 1976, she married James Mecklin in Duluth. Her greatest accomplishment was being a breast cancer survivor. Diane was a dedicated and caring nurse, and she loved the outdoors and spent much time on their property in Wascott.

She will be sadly missed and is survived by her husband James, her parents Robert and Beverly of Solway Township, brothers Scott (Lenora) and John (Cindy), both of Solway Township, a sister Cheryl (Bill) Hallamek of Wrenshall, and several nieces and nephews.

Clifford Erick Jackson Jr.
Clifford Erick Jackson Jr., who was raised in Munger and graduated from Proctor High School in 1959, died unexpectedly Fri., Mar. 23, 2001 in his son’s home. He was 59.

He was born in Cloquet, and resided there. He married Susan Hallback Jan. 6, 1962, in Cloquet. Clifford was a retired driver for United Parcel Service. He enjoyed working on the family farm, gardening, woodworking, going to Arizona for the winter and was a devoted grandpa to his grandchildren. He was a member of Moose Lodge 1274 in Cloquet and the Eagles in Apache Junction, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by his father Clifford Jackson Sr. in 1975, and a sister-in-law Sharon Lyes March 16, 2001.

Cliff is survived by his wife Susan of Cloquet, a son Rick of Cloquet, a daughter Teresa (Kris) Robinson of Hermantown, his mother Mayme Jackson of Cloquet, a brother Denny of Superior, a sister Jean (Randy) Obrecht of Cloquet, grandchildren Eric and Alex Jackson and Christopher, Morgan and Meagan Robinson, brothers-in-law Donald (Shirley) Hallback, Charles Hallback, Terrance (Donna) Hallback and Michael Lyes, all of Cloquet, and sisters-in-law Kathleen (Dennis) Johnson and Roberta (William) Johnson, both of Cloquet, and many nieces and nephews.

A private family service was held.

Phyllis Ardelle Cox
Services were held yesterday for Phyllis Ardelle Cox. She died Thurs., Mar. 22, 2001 at Nopeming Care Center. She was 74.

The Fairfield Drive resident was born in Two Harbors, Minn. on July 4, 1926.

She married Richard William Cox in Duluth on July 4, 1943. She has worked at Nopeming Nursing Home in housekeeping for ten years. She was a homemaker and a member of First Church of Christ. Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Ricky Anderson, and her husband Richard in 1996.

Survivors include her four sons Bill of Proctor, Steven M. (Yvonne) of Menominee, Wis., David B. of Japan, and Ronald G. of San Dimas, Calif, her three daughters Sandra L. Cox of Coon Rapids, Minn., JoAnn M. (Michael) Kersting of Chatham, Ill., Christine E. Cox of Washburn, Wis., her sister Mary (Donald) Bailey, her brothers Jack (Dorothy) Anderson and Gerald Anderson, all of Two Harbors, six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Memorials preferred to the Parkinson’s Foundation. Burial was in Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Robert G. Burnor
Services were held earlier this week for Robert G. Burnor. He died Thurs., Mar. 22, 2001 in the V.A. Medical Center in St. Cloud, Minn. He was 68.

The Stark Rd. resident was born in Jeffersonville, Vt., and moved to Duluth in 1970. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 26 years and retired in 1976 as master sergeant. After retiring from the Air Force, he drove a school bus for the Proctor School District and was also a self-employed truck driver. He was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church.

He was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather Hannah and Vernon Playful, and a brother Raymond.

Survivors include his wife Wanda, daughters Terri (Brian Swedeen) Burnor of St. Paul and Tina (John) Valdez of Ogden, Utah, a granddaughter BreAnna Burnor, a sister Theresa (Charles) Hallett of Hartley, Del., and several nieces and nephews.

Burial was in Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Norma A. Phillips
James Phillips of Saginaw is mourning the loss of his mother Norma A. Phillips of Grand Rapids, who died Sun., Mar. 11. She was 83.

She was born in 1918 to August and Agnes (Serk) Behm in the Splithand area of Grand Rapids where she grew up and attended school. She graduated from Grand Rapids High School and then lived in the Minneapolis area for a brief time prior to returning to Splithand.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1980, her parents, a sister, and two brothers.

Survivors include a daughter Leona Fitzmaurice of Pullman, Wash., sons Carl (Janet) Phillips of Andover, Minn., James Phillips of Saginaw, Dean Phillips of Minneapolis, two granddaughters, and three great-grandchildren.

Burial was in Harris Cemetery in Harris Township, Minn.

Theodore “Ted” Super
Elsie Gulbranson of Proctor is mourning the death of her brother Theodore “Ted” Super of Piedmont Ave. He died Sat., Mar. 31, 2001, in Viewcrest Nursing Home. He was 93.

He was born in Munger and had lived in the Munger and Duluth areas all of his life. He worked for Hallett Dock Co., Dock 6, and retired in 1973. He had also worked on other docks and worked his own farm in Munger. Ted was a 20-year member of the Eagles and a member of Solway Senior Citizens.

He is also survived by his wife Ruth, a daughter, another sister, a step-grandson, and special friend Janice Moore.

Visitation is today (Thurs.) at 1 until the 2 p.m. service in Christ Lutheran Church, 2415 Ensign St. Burial will be in Bethany Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Norman Stenberg
Stuart Stenberg of Pike Lake is mourning the death of his father Norman Stenberg of Baxter, Minn., formerly of Duluth and Thief River Falls. He died Fri., Mar. 30, 2001. He was 82.

Norman was born in Greenbush, Minn., where he married Palma Anderson in 1943. He had worked as an electrician, retiring in 1981. He was a member of IBEW 242. He had served on the church council of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Duluth.

Norman is also survived by his wife Palma “Pam” of Baxter, four daughters, and 11 grandchildren.

Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Gardens, Brainerd.

Lambert M. Klosowsky
Lambert M. Klosowsky of East Third St., who was born in Proctor and lived in Hermantown and Duluth, died Fri., Mar. 30, 2001, in St. Mary’s Medical Center. He was 93.

He graduated from East High School in Detroit in 1929 and from Packard Motor Co. for auto mechanics. He had worked for Bolton Swanby and Arrow Chevrolet, and for 33 years he owned and operated Lambert Service in Duluth Heights. He was a lifetime member of Peace United Church of Christ, and he served in the Army during World War II. In 1990, he wrote his autobiography. He wintered in Deland, Fla.

Survivors include his wife Dorothy Perry Klosowsky and her daughter, a sister, a nephew Paul (Grace) Sandstrom of Munger, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Entombment was in Sunrise Memorial Park. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Patricia R. VanReese
Patricia R. VanReese of Nashwauk died Sat., Mar. 31, 2001, in St. Mary’s Medical Center after a courageous two and one-half year battle with cancer. She was 50.

She was born in Duluth and had resided there until 1977 when she moved to Nashwauk. She had been employed as senior center director at the Grand Rapids YMCA from 1993 to 2000 and as owner/operator of Sjo-Pro Tours North for the past year. She was a member of Bethany Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband David, two daughters, her mother Ruth Sjoblom of Duluth, a sister, three brothers including Ronald Sjoblom of Duluth, five grandchildren, and her three dogs.

Memorials may be directed to Star of the North Animal Shelter, c/o David VanReese. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Ingrid J. Olson
Ingrid J. Olson, formerly of Leonard St. and Sun City, Ariz., died Tues., Mar. 27, 2001 in Mt. Olivet Careview Home in Minneapolis.

Ingrid was born in Eksharad, Varmland, Sweden. She lived in Duluth from 1923 until 1945 and in Fargo N.D. from 1945 to 1972. She then returned to Duluth. For the past eight years she has lived in Minneapolis. She was a member of Forbes United Methodist Church in Proctor. In 1975, she retired as division manager of catalog sales for Sears and Roebuck in Fargo, where she worked for 22 years. While in Fargo, she was a 4-H leader, the Kappa Alpha Theta Mother’s Club President, member of Eastern Star, Elkettes, Moorhead Country Club, and the Covenant Church. In her youth, she was the So. St. Louis County Potato Queen, 4-H leader, winner of multiple trips to the Minnesota State Fair as exhibitor and demonstrator in 4-H. She was selected to represent Minnesota and demonstrate cheese making with her sister Gunhild Larson Anderson at St. Louis and the Missouri Fair. She also attended the University of Minnesota, St. Paul Campus. In Duluth she was Telecare/Friends Team Captain for CHUM, Proctor Food Shelf, Co-chair of the mission commission, administrative council and annual conference representative, Jackson Community Club Secretary, Greyhound Drivers Retiree Association and a volunteer at St. Mary’s Hospital and the Depot.

Ingrid is survived by her daughter, three grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Burial was in Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.
