Arthur Bernard Myrdahl
Arthur Bernard Myrdahl, who moved with his family to Proctor when he was 14, died Thurs., Apr. 5, 2001 in Lake Haven Manor. He was 91.

He was born Jan. 27, 1910 in Bergen, Norway to Hjalmer and Johanna (Berg) Myrdahl. At age 6, he moved to North Dakota. He had worked at the Coolerator plant for 10 years and for the Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range Railway as a conductor, retiring in 1975 after 30 years of service. He was a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, NARVE, and a lifetime member of the National United Trainmen.

He was preceded in death by his parents and seven siblings.

Survivors include his wife Gladys (Breimon) Myrdahl, daughters Joann Matson of Duluth, Constance Myrdahl of Proctor, sons Ronald of Calif. and Daniel (Sandra) of Hermantown, six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and his special friend Alvin Schillinger of Hermantown.

Burial was in Sunrise Memorial Park Cemetery, Hermantown.

Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Director.

Loreen “Lorie” Lea Fish
Loreen “Lorie” Lea Fish, who grew up in Solway and graduated from Proctor High School, lost her battle with cancer, Sun., Apr. 1, 2001. She died in her Laurel, Mont. home at the age of 39.

She was born in Duluth on Nov. 18, 1961, to Charles and Dorleen (Parrott) VanDorn. Lorie attended Munger Elementary School, graduated from PHS in 1980 and graduated from St. Luke’s X-ray training in 1982. She worked as an X-ray technician in Brainerd for two years. She worked at St. Luke’s Hospital until 1993. Lorie married Peter Fish in 1987. They moved to Laurel in 1993.

Lorie was preceded in death by her father Charles A. VanDorn, her maternal grandparents Bert and Ruth Parrott, and paternal grandparents Charles and Nora VanDorn.

She is survived by her husband Peter of Laurel, her mother Dorleen VanDorn of Duluth, a brother Steven (Debra) VanDorn of Etown, Ky., sisters Sharon (Royal) Sams of Tulsa, Okla., Elaine (Randy) Thudin of Esko and Leiah (Scott) Schroeder of Portage, Wis., her mother-in-law Anthnet Fish of Hermantown, and many nieces and nephews.

Burial was in Maple Grove Cemetery.

Bertil C. “Bert” Carlson
Bertil C. “Bert” Carlson, who attended Proctor High School, died Mon., Apr. 2, 2001 in Chris Jensen Nursing Home. He was 79.

The Hermantown resident was born in Mjolbny, Sweden. His family came to America in 1926, settled in Duluth and later moved to Saginaw. During World War II, Bert worked at Marine Iron and the Duluth shipyards. He later became owner and operator of Arrowhead Concrete Works with his two brothers. Bert married Virginia Anderson in Duluth.

He was a member of First Covenant Church and served on the board of its Friendly Folks Club. He also was a member of Top Notchers and Keenagers Clubs. He was a past master of Trinity Masonic Lodge, served on its board of trustees as treasurer for 18 years, was awarded the Trinity Lodge Master Mason of the Year and also the Hiram award for outstanding service. Bert was an officer in the Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Duluth; commander of the Duluth Council of Kadash and earned recognition as a Knight Commander of the Court of Honor; member of Aad Temple Shrine and its directors staff as well as the Ela-Ala-Grotto. He was also a member of the Grand Lodge of Minnesota, from which he was appointed representative of the Grand Lodge of Sweden. He served on the Hermantown Utility Commission and received an award for outstanding service. Bert will also be remembered for his pancake breakfasts and homemade potato sausage noon lunches at Trinity Masonic Lodge.

Bert is survived by his wife Virginia, daughters Linda (Jeff) Crider and Janet Smith, both of Hermantown, a brother Andy (Everiene) of Duluth, a sister Ollie (Gil) Johnson of Duluth, grandchildren Charles “Chuck” (Debbie) Crider, Amy (Brian) Vittorio, Tina Crider, Jesse Smith and Holly Smith, and seven great-grandchildren.

Entombment was in Sunrise Cemetery.

Joe “Spud” Engman Jr.
Joe “Spud” Engman Jr., who was born in Twig, died Sun., Mar. 25, 2001 in Yuma, Ariz. He was 72.

The South Bend, Wash. resident married Edith Krieger in Ocean Park, Wash. He was owner/operator of several oyster farming operations in the Puget Sound area.

He is survived by his wife Edith, two sons , a daughter, a grandson, two granddaughters, a brother, five sisters including Francis Caster of Pike Lake.

Lois M. Shovein
Services were held last week for Lois M. Shovein. She died Tues., Apr. 3, 2001, at the age of 77.

The Proctor resident was born in Duluth on May 5, 1923, and lived in Carlton and Duluth until 1987. She then moved to Leesburg, Fla. Lois spent the last month with her children in Minneapolis.

She was preceded in death by her husband John D. Shovein and a brother Neil Bilsey.

She will be dearly missed by her children Michael (Mary), Gayle (Michael) Walkowiak, Daniel, Sandra (Tim) Oliver and Jack D. (Polly), grandchildren Matthew, Ross, Mikenzie, Josh, Allison, Christopher, Patrick, Zachary and Chloe, and a sister June (Vern) Larsen.

Burial was in Oneota Cemetery.

Phillip A. Nelson
Diane J. Rauschenfels of Proctor is mourning the death of her father, Phillip A. Nelson. He died Sat., Apr. 7, 2001, in Duluth following an extensive illness. He was 80.

The Biwabik resident was born Sept. 12, 1920 to Carl and Olive Nelson in Crosby, Minn. He lived most of his life on the Iron Range. He graduated from Crosby-Ironton High School in 1938 and was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in New Guinea. He married Priscilla Jean Wahlstrom in 1947 in Grand Rapids, Minn. He worked for Lerch Brothers as an ore analyst for 25 years and was a lab supervisor for Eveleth Taconite for 20 years, retiring in 1980.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Carl M., a sister Lois VanKleek, an infant brother Malcolm Vernon, and an infant granddaughter Betsy Jane Brotherton.

He is also survived by his wife Jean, two other daughters Susan (Peter) Marczak of Antigo, Wisc. and Jill (Larry) Brotherton of Aliso Viejo, Calif., a brother Donald (Dede) of Hibbing, two sisters Evelyn (Ken) Johnson of Deerwood, Minn. and Elaine (George) Herbst of Eden Prairie, Minn., seven grandchildren Michelle (Nathan) Fields of Valparaiso, Ind., Brian Marczak, Christopher and Andrew Rauschenfels, and Kate, Phillip and Melissa Brotherton.

A memorial service will be held Fri., Apr. 20, 2001, in Bell Brothers Chapel. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Dana Kathleen Carter
Terry Carter of Twig is mourning the death of his mother, Dana Kathleen Carter. She died Sun., Apr. 1, 2001 at the age of 63.

The Waite Park resident was born in Duluth. She lived in Cotton for most of her life, graduating from Cotton High School. She attended the University of Minnesota Minneapolis and was postmaster in Cotton until 1991, when she moved to Avon, Minn., as postmaster there, retiring in January 2000 after 29 years with the Postal Service.

Dana was a member of Cotton Community Church. She was a Girl Scout leader and served as master of ceremonies at the Minnesota Fiddle Contest.

She is also survived by two daughters, two brothers, six grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Interment was in Lakeview Cemetery, Cotton.

Alta Louise Nordeen
Alta Louise Nordeen, who taught in Proctor and later became principal at Pike Lake elementary, died Tues., Apr. 17, 2001 in a Duluth hospital. She was 92.

She was born in Two Harbors. Alta married Arthur Nordeen in 1941 in Duluth.

She graduated from Two Harbors High School and went on to graduate from Duluth Teacher’s College, which is now the University of Minnesota Duluth. Alta was a teacher at Knife River, then taught at Proctor in 1934 until 1941. After teaching in Duluth for a few years, Alta went back to teaching at Proctor during the war. In 1956, Alta received her bachelor’s degree in education from UMD and became principal of Pike Lake in the Proctor school system until 1962. She then continued to do substitute teaching.

Alta enjoyed sewing, painting and playing the organ. She was a member of the Duluth Retired Teachers Association, the State Association, AARP and Lakeside Senior Citizens.

Alta is survived by her husband of 59 years Arthur, nieces Jeanne Odencrantz Wilcox and Mary Westlund Butler, nephews Lewis Ely, Errol Sehnke, John Westlund and Russell Ely, and numerous great nieces and nephews.

Burial was in Forest Hill cemetery.

Velora Ostrowski
Julia Robinson Pugliese is saddened by the loss of her sister Velora Ostrowski. She died Wed., Apr. 18, 2001 in a Duluth hospice. She was 78.

She was born in Denham, Minn. The family moved to Duluth in 1931.

She married John A. Ostrowski in 1946 in Duluth. She had worked for Zinsmaster Bakery, Bjorlin’s Bakery and Gustafson’s Bakery.

Velora was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and a member of the former St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years John, a son, three daughters, two brothers, another sister, eight grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Burial was in the Polish Catholic Cemetery.

Clifford Arthur Sletten
Arlo Sletten is mourning the loss of his brother Clifford Arthur Sletten. He died Sun., Apr. 15, 2001 in a Duluth hospital. He was 87.

Clifford was born in Fosston, Minn. He retired from the DTA in 1974 after 30 years of service.

He was a member of Our Savior’s Evangelical Lutheran Church.

He is also survived by his wife Carol, a daughter, a son, a granddaughter, three grandsons, two great-grandsons, another brother, and several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
