Edward L. 'Eddie' Schmitz, 87, of Sleepy Eye and formerly of New Ulm died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, at the New Ulm Medical Center in New Ulm.
Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm with burial in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Friday and continues 7:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday at Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. There will be a parish prayer service at 6 p.m. and a combined rosary by the St. John's Court Catholic Order of Foresters and the St. Patrick's Council, Knights of Columbus at 7 p.m. both Friday at the funeral home.
He is survived by his wife, Louise Schmitz of Sleepy Eye; daughters and sons-in-law, Marlys and Roger Huss of Kinnelon, N.J., Janet and Ed Steffl of Clements, and Deanna and Ken "Babe" Paa of New Ulm; a son and daughter-in-law Ronald and Bette Schmitz of Spicer; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a sister, Marie Wallner, a resident of the Sleepy Eye Care Center in Sleepy Eye; and by numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Josephine and Gertrude Schmitz both in infancy; sisters Lucille Robinson, Marguerite Ochs, Gertrude Schunert; and brothers Anthony and Raymond Schmitz.
Eddie was born Jan. 21, 1915, in New Ulm to Anton and Marguerite (Arnoldi) Schmitz. He attended country school in Milford Township, Brown County. On May 4, 1937, he married Louise Fischer at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. After marriage they farmed near Essig for a short time before moving to a farm near Lafayette, farming there from 1947 to 1965 when they then moved into New Ulm. He worked at the Farmers Co-op in Lafayette from 1965 to 1974. He was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm, Knights of Columbus, Catholic Order of Foresters, and Farm City Hub Club.
In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to the donor's choice.

Harold H. Deno, 93, of New Prague, formerly of Arlington, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, at Sibley Medical Center in Arlington.
Services are 2 p.m. today at St. John's Lutheran Church in Arlington Township, Sibley County, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the church.
Arrangements are with the Kolden Funeral Home in Arlington.
He is survived by his sons, Anthony Deno of Gaylord, and William Deno of Henderson; daughters, Louise Ruthenbeck of Elko, Elaine Napper and Ruth Kukacka of New Prague, and Beverly Hormann of Rosemount; sister, Selma Bakken of Albert Lea; brother, Bernell Deno of Spokane, Wash.; 31 grandchildren; and 38 great-grandchildren.
Harold H. Deno was born May 3, 1908, in Le Sueur, to Robert and Louise (Behren) Deno.
He served in the Army Air Corps from 1926-1929, serving in the Philippine Islands.

Dr. Deane W. Benton, M.D., 87, of rural Fairfax and formerly of New Ulm died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002, at Buffalo Lake Healthcare Center in Buffalo Lake.
Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm with burial in the New Ulm City Cemetery in New Ulm. Full military honors will be conducted at the cemetery by New Ulm Veterans Organizations.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the time of service on Saturday at the funeral home.
He is survived by his daughters, Linda Hornbeck of Laguna Niguel, Calif., Deborah Ottaway of Gresham, Ore., and Wendy Benton of Kapaa, Hawaii; sons and daughters-in-law, Christopher and Becky Benton of Dallas, Ore., and Paul and Mary Benton of Mendota Heights; grandsons, Evan and Erick Benton of Dallas, Ore., Robert and Grant Benton of Gresham, Ore., and James, Samuel, and William Benton of Mendota Heights; granddaughter, Kaylan Benton of Mendota Heights; a sister and brother-in-law, Frances and Wallace Alwin of New Ulm; a sister-in-law, Beatrice Benton of Milan, Illinois; and by many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Barbara; a brother Lyman Benton; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary Jane and Harold Toreen.
Deane was born June 2, 1914, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Sidney and Neva (Weigle) Benton. He married Barbara Sjordal in 1941. He attended the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis where he graduated in 1943 as a M.D. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1944, serving in the Rainbow 42nd Infantry Division in England, France, Germany, and Austria. In 1946 he was discharged from the Army at the rank of major and moved to New Ulm where he worked as a physician. He was then called to duty with the Minnesota National Guard and was sent to Fort Rucker, Ala. He then returned to the University of Minnesota graduating in 1954 with a degree in psychiatry. He had private practices in Santa Ana, Calif., and in Hawaii for many years until he retired in 1981.

Shirley Ann Matter, 54, of Springfield, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, at her home.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Springfield, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 4 - 8 p.m. today, and 7:30 - 10 a.m. Saturday at Sturm Funeral Home in Springfield.
She is survived by her husband, Dennis Matter of Springfield; daughter, Holly Matter of Willmar; stepdaughter Jean Johnston of Altura; two grandchildren; and brother, Floyd Duffy.
Shirley Ann Matter was born Feb. 22, 1948, to LaVerne and Lucille (Barge) Duffy in St. James.

Eunice Wenz, age 71, of Hector, passed away Wednesday, February 27, 2002, at her home.
Funeral service will be held Saturday, March 2, 2002, at 1:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Hector.
Internment in the Hector City Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Friday from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Hughes Funeral Home in Hector and continues one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
Eunice Marie Wenz was born June 26, 1930, to Armendt W. and Ima M. (Bliss) King in Crooks Township, Renville County, Minnesota. She attended Olivia Public School. Eunice was united in marriage to Earl R. Wenz on December 9, 1947, at the Willmar Methodist Church. They made their home in Hector, Minnesota, and have resided there all their married lives. Eunice worked for the Hector Telephone Company, Rosenberg's in Gaylord, Wiman Corp. and Fingerhut in Bird Island, and Suttle Apparatus in Hector. She was a Union Representative for Amalgamated Clothing Workers. Eunice was a member of the United Methodist Church in Hector. She enjoyed books, gardening, sewing, bird watching, and all her grandchildren. She passed away peacefully at home on February 27, 2002. She will be greatly missed by all her family and friends.
Eunice is survived by her husband Earl Wenz of Hector; four daughters: Sharon Schulte and her husband Maynard of Hector, Linda Minnick and her husband Larry of Rush City, Patti Roepke and her husband Gene of Aitkin, and Gwendolyn Moder and her husband Douglas of Denver, Colorado; two sons: David Wenz and his wife Debra of Hackensack, and Bruce Wenz and his wife Karen of Hector; 18 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; sister Lois Manthei of Danube; sisters-in-law: Clarice King of Renville and Doris King of Danube; and brother-in-law Henry Herr of Richfield.
Eunice was preceded in death by four brothers: Merlin, Virgil, Melvin, and Vernon; her sister Doris Herr; and her great-grandson Luke Schulte.

Mabel Ballard, 90, of Inver Grove Heights, formerly of Redwod Falls and Cottonwood, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at the Inver Grove Heights Good Samaritan Care Center.
Services are 11 a.m. Monday at English Lutheran Church in Cottonwood, with burial in the Redwood Falls Cemetery.
Visitation is 4-7 p.m., with a prayer service at 5 p.m., at the Redwood Valley Funeral Home, and one hour prior to services at the church Monday. Redwood Valley Funeral Home, Redwood Falls, is in charge of arrangements.

Willus Strate, 83, of 227 South Payne St. in New Ulm, died Saturday morning, March 2, 2002 at the New Ulm Medical Center. Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Redeemer Lutheran Church in New Ulm. Burial with full military honors conducted by the New Ulm Veterans Organizations will follow in the New Ulm City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, and 7 to 8 a.m. Tuesday at the Firle Funeral Home in New Ulm, and one hour prior to service at the church.
The family prefers memorials to the donor's choice.
Willus Fred Strate, the son of William and Minnie (Wagner) Strate, was born September 21, 1918 in Milford Twp., Brown County. He attended New Ulm public schools, graduating from New Ulm High School in 1936. He worked for Eibner's and the New Ulm Laundry, before entering the United States Army in April 1942. He served in Guadalcanal and the Philippines during World War II. Following his honorable discharge in 1946, he returned to New Ulm. He was united in marriage to Lillian Fenske on March 9, 1948 in Iowa. They made their home in New Ulm where he worked for Ahren's Sheet Metal and then spent the next twenty-nine years with the New Ulm Post Office, retiring in 1981. He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, holding various positions over the years. He was a member of VFW Post #1648 and American Legion Post #132 of New Ulm. During his lifetime, he was an avid sportsman, playing softball, and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his wife Lillian of New Ulm; sons, Chuck Strate of Elkhorn, WI, James of Pekin, IL; daughter, Joanne Strate of Minnetonka; two grandsons, Michael Strate of Minnetonka and Josef Strate of Nantucket, MA; sister, Lois Berg of Park Rapids; nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Emerson and Glenn Strate, and brother-in-law, Carroll Berg. The Light of the world ushered him to the eternal crystal polka floor to dance in painless joy. We'll miss him!

Robert B. Hoffmann, 54, of rural Gibbon, died Friday, March 1, 2002, at his home.
Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the St. George Catholic Church in West Newton Township, Nicollet County, with burial in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery in New Ulm. Visitation will be 4 - 8 p.m. Sunday and will continue for one hour prior to the time of mass at church on Monday. The St. George Catholic Aid Council will pray the rosary at 6:30 p.m. and there will be a parish prayer service at 7:30 p.m. both Sunday evening at the funeral home.
Robert is survived by his mother, Marie P. Hoffmann of rural Gibbon; a sister and brother-in-law, Doris and Jerry Christine of Minneapolis; a brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Marie Hoffmann of rural Gibbon; and two nieces and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Roman A. Hoffmann on July 6, 1998.
Robert was born November 28, 1947, in New Ulm to Roman Anton and Marie P. (Vetter) Hoffmann. He attended New Ulm schools and was a graduate of New Ulm High School. He farmed in West Newton Township, Nicollet County his entire life. He was a member of the St. George Catholic Church in West Newton Township, Nicollet County, and the St. George Catholic Aid Council.

Everette Krause, 88, of Belview, died Sunday, March 3, 2002, at Parkview Home.
Services are 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Grace Lutheran Church in Belview, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 5-8 p.m. today and one hour before services Tuesday at the church. Redwood Valley Funeral Home in Redwood Falls is handling arrangements.

Ida McGraw, 92, of Stewart, died Saturday, March 2, 2002, at Buffalo Lake Healthcare Center.
Services are 10 a.m., Wednesday at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Stewart with burial in the church's cemetery.
Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at Hughes Funeral Homes in Stewart with a 7 p.m. rosary and one hour before the church service.
She is survived by her sons, Robert of Gravette, Ark., Rolland of Franklin; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was born on Feb. 6, 1910, the daughter of William and Ida (Kottke) Westphal, in Anamoose Township, McHenry County, S.D.

Randall Lembke, 45, of Villard, formerly of New Ulm, died Sunday, March 3, 2002, at Glacial Ridge Hospital, Glenwood.
A memorial service is being planned for July 13, 2002. Visitation is 2-8 p.m. Thursday at Hoplin Funeral Home, Glenwood.
He is survived by his wife, Donna of Villard; parents Marvin and Lucille Lembke of Crosby; a brother, Tom of Hutchinson; and a sister, Lori of Pequot Lakes.
He was born July 13, 1956, in New Ulm to Marvin and Lucille (Palmer) Lembke.

Randy Ulrich, 42, of St. Paul and formerly of New Ulm, died Saturday, March 2, 2002, at the home of his sister in Minneapolis.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm with burial in the New Ulm City Cemetery in New Ulm.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Minnesota Valley Funeral Home, New Ulm; and will continue for one hour prior to the time of service at church on Wednesday.
Randy is survived by his daughter, Brandi Thomas of Maple Grove; his parents, Gerald "Gerry" and Carol Ulrich of New Ulm; twin sisters, Lori Schopper and her husband Dave of St. Michael, and Linda Austad and her husband Barry of Minneapolis; aunts and uncles, Luverne and Lucille Wenking and Dennis and Norma Ulrich, all of Hutchinson, Jim and Monnie Ulrich of McGregor, Wally and Lavonne Ebert and Irene Knutson, all of New Ulm; and by cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents.
Randy was born November, 26, 1959, in New Ulm to Gerald and Carol (Brust) Ulrich. He attended St. Paul's Grade School and was a 1978 graduate of New Ulm High School. He was active in baseball, basketball and football during his high school years. He was a member of the 1978 New Ulm American Legion Baseball team that played in the American Legion World Series in Yakima, Washington. After high school he moved to Mesa, Arizona, where he worked as a purchasing agent, then returning to Minnesota where he worked as a sales representative for Power Supply and Engineering of Bloomington. He was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed golfing, traveling, and playing with his dog Molly.
Randy's outgoing personality and sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him.

John Wellner, 91, of Springfield, died Sunday, March 3, 2002, at Springfield Medical Center.
Services are 1:30 p.m. Friday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Springfield, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Thursday and 7:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Friday at Sturm Funeral Home in Springfield; and one hour before the service Friday at the church.
He is survived by his wife Marretta (Jane) Wellner of Springfield; sons, Douglas Wellner of Blaine, and Mike Wellner of Redwood Falls; daughter, Barb Hokenson of Long Island, N.Y.; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brothers, Virgil Wellner of Springfield, and Lewis Wellner of Springfield; and sister, Ellen Smith of Florida.
John G. Wellner was born Aug. 12, 1910, in Stately Township, Brown County, to Otto and Mary (Brull) Wellner.

Dr. C. Howard Korth, 81, of New London, formerly of New Ulm, died Monday evening, March 4, 2002, at the Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Firle Funeral Home in New Ulm. Burial with full military honors conducted by the New Ulm Veterans Organizations will follow in the New Ulm City Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Thursday at Firle Funeral Home.
Survivors include his son, Cal Korth of Rogers; daughters, Patricia (Patsy) Cordes a missionary in Jamaica, Marcia Bonham and her husband Judd of New London; seven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Cal Backer of New Ulm; nieces and nephews; and one surviving pet, his dog Rascal.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois.
Charles Howard Korth, the son of Dr. Charles and Bertha (Ahle) Korth, was born Sept. 23, 1920, in Crookston. As a child, he moved with his family to New Ulm, where he attended St. Paul's Lutheran Grade School, and graduated from New Ulm High School in 1938. He attended Macalester College in St. Paul, and graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, IA, and Northwestern College of Chiropractic in St. Paul. He served three years in the US Army during World War II as an x-ray technician in New Guinea and the Philippines.
He married Lois Backer of New Ulm on March 20, 1943, in South Carolina. After the war, they made their home in New Ulm where they lived the majority of their lives, until retiring to Green Lake in 1993. They had spent most of their summers at the lake since 1952. A doctor of chiropractic in New Ulm, he originally practiced with his father since 1946, then in his own practice at Korth Chiropractic Clinic located on South Minnesota street, until his retirement in 1992. He belonged to and served as an officer to several state and national chiropractic organizations.
He was a member of St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran Church as a child and then Our Savior's Lutheran Church in New Ulm, and in retirement, Peace Lutheran Church of New London. He was a fifty-Year member of American Legion Post 132; VFW Post 1648; the New London American Legion; New Ulm Country Club; founding member of the Little Crow Country Club in, Spicer; New Ulm Rotary Club; Brown County Historical Society; and Brown County Humane Society.

Alice Huelskamp, 99, passed away on March 3, 2002, at the Clark Fork Valley Nursing Home in Plains, Mont. She was born in Monroe, S.D., on Aug. 31, 1902, to Anton and Jane Benson. On Nov. 11, 1924, she married Eugene Huelskamp. They lived in New Ulm until 1950, when they moved to Bismarck, N.D. Irene worked for the State Auditors office in Bismarck until she retired. In 1990, she came to Paradise to live with her daughter, Rhoda Munsch and be near her other daughter, Susan Flory. Irene was a lifetime member of Catholics Daughters of America. She also volunteered at the Hospital Auxiliary at St. Alexis Hospital in Bismarck. She loved playing bridge, dancing, quilting and playing her organ.
Irene is survived by her daughters and their husbands, Rhoda and Leon Munsch or Paradise, Mont., and Susan and Jim Flory of Plains, Mont. She has seven grandchildren, Bruce and Zara Munsch, Missoula, Mont.; Jane and Terry Degen, Belgrade, Mont.; Errol and Jami Munsch, Wichita Kan.; Damon Munsch, Paradise, Mont.; Laura Beller, Moffit, N.D.; Cindy and John Mielke, Plains, Mont.; Gary and Sandra Lammert, Eaton, Colo.; brother, Arthur Benson, Bismarck, N.D.; 17 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
Irene was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene of 53 years, her parents and two brothers, Leroy and Charles Benson.
Thank you God for letting us have her for so many years.
A memorial service will be hold on Saturday, March 16, at 10 a.m. at the St. James Catholic Church in Plains, Mont.
Arrangements are under the care of Garden City Funeral Home and Crematory.

Hedwig 'Hattie' Becke, 98, of Winthrop, died Monday, March 4, 2002, at Gaylord Lakeview Nursing Home.
Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church in Winthrop. Burial will be in the Winthrop Cemetery.
Visitation is 5-7:30 p.m. today and continues 7:30-8:30 a.m. Thursday at Dalin-Hantge Funeral Chapel in Winthrop, as well as one hour before services Thursday at the church.
Hedwig Ida Laura Sommer was born Jan. 16, 1904, in Transit Township, Sibley County, to Herman and Anna (Krueger) Sommer.
Hedwig is survived by her sons, Delford Becke of Crosslake, and Donald Becke of Winthrop; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
