Vance R. VanBuskirk
Vance R. VanBuskirk, who graduated from Proctor High School in 1960, died Fri., Apr. 27, 2001 in Ashland, Wisc. He was 58.

The Cornucopia, Wisc. resident was born in St. Peter, Minn. to Orville and Viola (Rodgers) VanBuskirk. Vance had been a Duluth resident for many years, living in Cornucopia for the past 4 1/2 years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served during the Cuban missile crisis aboard the USS Casa Grande. Vance was owner and operator of Northern Auto Damage Appraisers for more than 19 years until retirement, when he moved to Cornucopia. He married Darlene Tomporowski June 19, 1965, in Proctor. He was a member, deacon, Sunday school teacher and league leader of R.L.D.S. Church, Duluth Branch, and had been a member of the Pequaywan Lake Volunteer Fire Department for several years. Vance loved all outdoor activities.

He was preceded in death by his father Orville, and stepfather Harlow “Curly” Krueger.

Survivors include his wife Darlene, sons David (Destiny) of Cornucopia and Dennis (Cherie) of Superior, his mother Viola Krueger of Hermantown, a brother Steve (Liz) of Kingsland, GA., nieces and nephews, a godchild, and two special grandpuppies Buster and Timber.

Burial was in the Town of Bell Cemetery, Cornucopia. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Selma Olivia Jacobson Baublitz
Selma Olivia Jacobson Baublitz, who was born at the end of the 19th century and lived to see the 21st, died Sun., Apr. 29, 2001 in Lake Haven Manor. She was 100.

She was born Nov. 18, 1900 in Wausau, Wisc. to Jacob and Sophia (Johnson) Jacobson. The family moved to Ramsey St. in West Duluth when Selma was a young child. She married Merlin W. (Bob) Baublitz on Feb. 22, 1930. They moved to Proctor in 1937 and lived on Alice St. until 1961. She has since lived at Ramsey Manor, Wesley Residence and Lake Haven Manor. Selma was the oldest member of Elim Lutheran Church and belonged to the Mary-Martha Circle for 61 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1961, her parents, brothers Arthur, Alfred and Ted, and a sister Ellen.

She is survived by two sons Merlin (Jennie) of Proctor and Richard (Tricia) of Carson City, Nev., ten grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandsons and several nieces and nephews.

Burial was in Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Floyd R. Freeman
John Freeman of Twig is mourning the death of his father, Floyd R. Freeman. He died Mon., Apr. 23, 2001 at the age of 81.

The Minnetonka resident was born in Duluth. He served in the Army during World War II and the Korean War.

Floyd is also survived by another son, a daughter, three brothers, three sisters, two grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, a step-grandson, and many nieces and nephews.

No service at Floyd’s request.

David L. Katchmark, RoseMarie Thrun and Leona Bibeau, both of Proctor, are saddened by the death of their brother, David L. Katchmark. He died Sat., Apr. 28, 2001 in Moose Lake. He was 57.

He is also survived by his wife Sharon, three daughters, two sons, five brothers, four other sisters, and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Burial was in Sunset Memorial Cemetery.

Lorraine Louise Ward
Lorraine Louise Ward, who worked for the First National Bank of Proctor retiring as a vice president in 1985, died Sat., May 5, 2001 in Nopeming Nursing Home. She was 77.

She was born in 1923 to Edward and Emma Hoppa in Ely. During World War II, she worked for the War Department in Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and Detroit. She then worked for the Yellowstone Bank in Laurel, Mont. and then transferred to the Yellowstone Bank in Billings, Mont. She moved to Duluth in 1953 and worked for the bank in Proctor.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her sisters Virginia Brohaugh, Evelyn Ward and Mary Helen Hoppa.

She is survived by her husband Lester, a son Ronald (Judy) of Flower Mound, Texas, a daughter Toni Paulson of Proctor, a sister Eileen Elfving of Silver Bay, a brother Edward Hoppa of Eveleth, and five grandchildren.

No services at Lorraine’s request. Inurnment was in Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Virginia “Gina” Josephine Nordstrand
A memorial service will be held today, Thurs., for Virginia “Gina” Josephine Nordstrand. She died Mon., May 7, 2001, in St. Luke’s Hospice. She was 70.

The Lindahl Road resident was born in Hopkins, Minn. to William and Clara (Vosmek) Mraz and has lived in the Duluth area for 48 years. She married Frank Nordstrand in Cromwell, Minn. 50 years ago. She was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church in Proctor and was a very avid bowler.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers William and Melvin, and a sister Mary Ann.

Surviving are her husband Frank E., two sons Michael F. of Flagstaff, Ariz. and Steve D. (Cherlye) of Oak Harbor, Wash., two grandchildren, a sister Darlene (Ernie) Pionk of Moose Lake and a brother Stanley (Olie) Mraz of Barnum.

Visitation will be from 9:30 until the 10 a.m. memorial service today, Thurs., in St. Rose Catholic Church in Proctor. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Mary “Maymie” Dusek
Karen Alfonsi of Proctor is mourning the death of her mother Mary “Maymie” Dusek. The Floodwood resident died Wed., May 2, 2001 in Duluth. She was 84.

She was born in Waterbury, Conn. and had lived in Hibbing; Akron, Ohio; Floodwood and Duluth. She graduated from Floodwood High School and attended two years of business college in Duluth. Mary worked at the Agricultural Adjustment Administration, where she met her husband Luke of Floodwood. They were married in 1943 and moved to Floodwood, where they operated a dairy and beef farm.

Mary is also survived by four other daughters, two sons, 14 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and two sisters.

Burial was in Forest Hill Cemetery, Van Buren Township.

Glenn W. Burke
Lyle Burke of Proctor is mourning the death of his father, Glenn W. Burke. He died Thurs., May 3, 2001 in Chris Jensen Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was 83.

The former Kenwood resident was born in Duluth and was a lifelong area resident and a 35-year resident of Homecroft. Glenn graduated from Duluth Central High School in 1935 and obtained his Associate of Arts Degree from the University of Minnesota Duluth. He was a charter member, the first president, and later the secretary and fire marshall of the Rice Lake Township Volunteer Firefighters. He was also a member of the Boy Scouts of America, was awarded the Silver Scout, for recognition of his 32 years of service during which he held various offices in Troop 7, including organizing and was the first Cubmaster of Pack 7 in Homecroft.

Glenn served in the Navy Seabees and the Army in World War II, with time in Hawaii and Guam. He retired in 1979 as an engineering services engineer after 24-1/2 years with the Duluth Missabe & Iron Range Railroad.

He is also survived by his wife Adele, a daughter Linda (David) Spears of Duluth, three other sons Loren (Lisa) of Atlanta, Lane of St. Paul, and Lee of Duluth, ten grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Sat., May 19 at 11 a.m. in Fred Olson Mortuary.

William Carl Oscar Janke
William Carl Oscar Janke of Alborn died Wed., Apr. 25, 2001, in Cloquet Community Memorial Convalescent Nursing Care Section. He was 84.

He was born in New Prague, Minn. He married Dorothy Lind in 1943. William served in the medical attachment of the Army Air Corps from 1942-1946. He worked for the DM&IR Railway for 28 years. He was a brakeman and retired in 1979 as yardmaster. He also was a logger and a farmer.

William was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Saginaw and a member of the Cloquet American Legion.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years Dorothy, sons Harold (Margaret) and William E. (Wendy), both of Alborn, Howard (Ruth) of Esko and Ellwyn (Delores) of Saginaw, daughters Joan (Myron) Ugstad, Lois (John) Larson and Alice (Raymond) Larson, all of Alborn, brothers Howard (Esther) Amborn of Minneapolis and Ronald (Karen) Amborn of Saginaw, 17 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, a sister Selma Arbuckle of Saginaw, and several nieces and nephews.

Interment was in St. John’s Cemetery, Saginaw.

Arthur P. Lindgard
Arthur P. Lindgard, who was born in Proctor, died Fri., May 4, 2001 of natural causes in his Waterloo, Iowa home. He was 87.

He was born in 1913 to Joseph and Olga Larson Lindgard. He married Dorothy M. Studley in 1939 in Proctor.

Arthur had worked as an inspector at John Deere for 21 years, retiring in 1976.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Norbert and Orville.

He is survived by his wife, a son Robert of Waterloo, three grandchildren, and a brother Reidar of Bangor, Calif.

Inurnment will be in Oneota Cemetery at a later date.

Dorothy L. Zack
Dorothy L. Zack, who was born in Proctor and graduated from Proctor High School, died Fri., May 11, 2001 in her Cloquet home. She was 72.

She was born to Gust and Glady (Clauson) Wagner. She married Lloyd Zack on Nov. 15, 1952, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Proctor. Dorothy worked for the telephone company as an operator in Duluth before moving to St. Paul in 1959. She and Lloyd moved to Cloquet in July of 2000. Dorothy loved helping people and being with her friends. She also enjoyed camping and spending time with her family. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Art Wagner, and nephews Greg and Gary Wagner.

She is survived by her husband Lloyd, a son Todd Zack of Jackson Hole, Wyo., a daughter Kathy (Terry) Mullen of Cloquet, a sister Joan (Clayton) Berg of Duluth, and grandchildren Ryan, Keith and Kelly Mullen.

Inurnment was in Maple Grove Cemetery.
