Fr. Ernest Muellerleile, 82, originally of St. Paul, died May 16, 2002, in Anchorage, Alaska.
Services were held May 22 in Anchorage, and on May 25 a memorial service was held in St. Peter's in Mendota, where he had been baptized. Burial was in St. Peter's Cemetery in Mendota.
Among his pastoral assignments, Father Muellerleile served at St. Mary in Bird Island, and in 1957 entered the Diocese of New Ulm, where he served at St. Catherine's in Redwood Falls and St. Mary's in New Ulm.
He then left to do mission work in Alaska and served at St. Benedict in Anchorage, and founded St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Anchorage. In 1984, he founded Holy Cross in Anchorage, and ministered there until his retirement in June 2001.

Tammy Olson, 29, of Hanska, died Wednesday, June 12, 2002 at her home in Hanska, the result of a fall.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 17, 2002 at Zion Lutheran Church, Hanska with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be 2-5 p.m. Sunday, June 16, 2002 at Firle Funeral Home, Hanska and Monday at the church, one hour prior to the service.
She is survived by a daughter, Larissa Young of Hanska; father, Larry Olson of Hanska; mother, Linda Gustafson of Hanska; stepbrother, Mikale Gustafson of Hanska; paternal grandmother, Irene Olson of Hanska and maternal grandparents, Robert and Kathleen Mosser of Madelia.
She was born Jan. 9, 1973 in New Ulm to Larry and Linda (Mosser) Olson.

Elaine Samuelson, 81, of New Ulm, formerly of Hutchinson, died Thursday, June 13, 2002 at the Fairfax Community Home.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, June 17, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in New Ulm. Burial will be 9 a.m. Tuesday in the Oakland Cemetery in Hutchinson.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Sunday, and 7 a.m. to noon Monday at the Firle Funeral Home in New Ulm, and one hour prior to services at the church.
Survivors include her daughters, Lynae Flatau and her husband Thomas of New Ulm, Jeannine Grosam and her husband Steven of Gibbon; a son, Paul Samuelson and his wife Taniya of Richfield; grandchildren, Michele Flatau and husband Jeff Corey, Lindsay Flatau, Todd Flatau, Nancy Flatau, Chad Grosam, Ryan Grosam, and Troy Grosam; great grandchildren, Kristen Blumhoefer Grosam, Cedar Corey Flatau and Jasper Corey Flatau. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one son Steven Samuelson on Jan. 1, 1973, and infant grandsons Christopher Grosam, Joey Grosam, and Travis Grosam.
Elaine Marilyn Samuelson was born May 10, 1921 in St. Paul. She was adopted July 1, 1922 by Fred and Sena (Christensen) Bundgard of Hutchinson. She attended Hutchinson public schools, graduating from Hutchinson High School in 1939. Following graduation attended Dana College in Blair, Neb. She was united in marriage to Hilge Samuelson on Dec. 8, 1946 in Hutchinson. They made their home in Hutchinson until moving to Winthrop in 1962. Following her husband 's death on May 31, 1991, she moved to New Ulm, making her home in the Sunset Apartments. Elaine was an active volunteer in her community for several years. She was an avid reader, enjoyed letter writing, embroidering, and spending time with her family. She was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in New Ulm and a former member of First Lutheran Church in Winthrop.

Robert H. Woods, 71, of rural Arlington, died Friday, June 14, 2002 at the Sibley Medical Center, Arlington.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday, June 17, 2002 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Arlington Township. Burial with military rites will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Oakwood Cemetery, Belle Plaine.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Sunday, June 16, 2002 at Kolden Funeral Home, Arlington and Monday at the church, one hour prior to the service.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine of rural Arlington; two daughters, Nancy Woods of Racine, Wis. and Donna de Cathelineau of Mason City, Iowa.
He was born July 13, 1930 to William P. and Lillian M. (Busch) Woods in Arlington Township. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War.

Vera Bates, 86, of 1224 5th North Street in New Ulm, died Sunday, June 16, 2002, at her home.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, June 22, 2002 at the Roscommon Township Cemetery in Houghton Lake, Michigan.
Minnesota Valley Funeral Home, New Ulm, is in charge of arrangements.
Vera is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and Roger Klockziem of New Ulm; fourteen grandchildren; and twenty great-grandchildren; sisters, Betty McCann, Eleanor Smith, and Mazie Hammer all of Ontario, Canada. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, J. Jerome Bates on August 12, 1991; a daughter, Susan Brookhouse on August 9, 1994.
She was born March 29, 1916 in Stratford, Ontario, to George and Louise (Schneider) Leinweber.

Destiny Juarez, 10 days old, of Hudson, Wis., died Saturday, June 15, 2002, at Fairview University Hospital.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 19, at St. Lucas Community Church in Lake Elmo, Minn.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, at Bakken-Young Funeral Home in Hudson, Wis.
She is survived by her parents, Jonie and Miguel; grandparents, Jon Tauer of New Ulm, Debbie Marty and husband, Neil of Hudson, Wis., and Martha Juarez of Milwaukee, Wis.; great-grandparents, Marilyn Marty, Pat Westrum, Doris Tauer, and Tim and Purita Beedy; great-great-grandparents, Leo and Vivian Rassett and Sylvia Beedy; many aunts, uncles, relatives and friends.
She was born June 5, 2002, at United Hospital in St. Paul to Miguel and Jonie (Tauer) Juarez.

Anna A. Taggatz, 99, of 109 Allen Avenue in Gibbon died Saturday, June 15, 2002, at the New Ulm Medical Center in New Ulm.
Funeral service will be 2 pm Thursday, June 20, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Gibbon with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in Gibbon and will continue for one hour prior to the time of the service at the church on Thursday.
Anna is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, Ruth Gummer of Richfield, Elda Taggatz of Minneapolis, and Esther and James Stephenson of Richfield; a son, Dr. Edgar Taggatz of Gibbon; daughter-in-law, Maureen Taggatz of Center City; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ewald and Goldine Schiefelbein of Osseo, Wisconsin, and Arnold and Ivis Schiefelbein of Fall Creek, Wisconsin.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Emanuel Taggatz on December 16, 1978; a son, Harold Taggatz in 1999; twin sons, Emanuel and Walter in infancy; brothers, Otto, Edward, and Walter; and sisters, Ida, Louise, Agnes, and Eleanore.
She was born on December 16, 1902 in Lincoln Township, Eau Claire County, Wisconsin, to Gustav and Auguste (Kleist) Schiefelbein. On July 22, 1928, she married Emanuel Taggatz at the St. Johns Lutheran Church rural Fall Creek, Wisconsin. They lived in the Gibbon area most of their married lives. She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Gibbon.

Helen M. Kolp, 84, of Redwood Falls, died Tuesday, June 18, 2002 at the Sunwood Good Samaritan Center, Redwood Falls.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday, June 21, at Nelson-Martin Funeral Service, Redwood Falls with burial in Crestlawn Memorial Gardens, rural Redwood Falls.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. today at Nelson-Martin Funeral Service.
She is survived by her children, Ralph, Lorraine Henning and Marylin Henning, all of Redwood Falls and Lois Just of Park Rapids; 15 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Elsie Sietsema of Phoenix, Ariz. and brother, Milo Sindelir, Mankato.
She was born Feb. 14, 1918, to Joseph and Marie (Lipold) Sindelir in New Prague.

Eugene 'Gene' Schmitz, 77, of 805 North State Street in New Ulm died Tuesday, June 18, 2002 at the Abbott-Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm with burial in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery in New Ulm with full military honors being conducted at the cemetery by the New Ulm veterans organizations.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Friday and 7:30-10 a.m. Saturday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. The St. John's Court of the Catholic Order of Foresters will pray the rosary at 6 p.m., and there will be a parish prayer service at 7 p.m. both Friday at the funeral home.
Gene is survived by his wife, Phyllis Schmitz of New Ulm; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Gary Radke of Elk River; sons and daughter-in-law, Bill and JoAnn Schmitz of Monument, Colorado, and Greg Schmitz of New Ulm; grandchildren, Paula Schmitz, Holly Schmitz, Kari Radke, and Jeremy Radke.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Tom Schmitz on September 13, 1982; a daughter-in-law, Mary Schmitz on October 23, 1979; brothers, Leo, Sylvester and Walter Schmitz; and a sister Frances Schmitz.
Gene was born June 7, 1925, in New Ulm to Henry and Lucy (Hoffmann) Schmitz. He attended Catholic Schools in New Ulm and was a graduate of Holy Trinity High School. He served in the United States Army from 1943-1946 in the European Theater. He married Phyllis Brand on October 7, 1950 at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in New Ulm. After marriage they lived in New Ulm where Gene worked for the Leuthold's Clothing Store in New Ulm and then he worked for Oak Grove Dairy for 30 years until he retired in 1987. He was a member of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm, the Seifert - Bianchi American Legion Post #132 where he served two terms as commander, the Albert Nagel Post 1648 Veterans of Foreign Wars, the St. John's Court of the Catholic Order of Foresters, and was also active with the Sons of the American Legion.

Marcella Olson, 88, of Winthrop and formerly of Gibbon, died Tuesday, June 18, 2002, at the Winthrop Good Samaritan Center in Winthrop.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Gibbon with burial in the church cemetery in Gibbon.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday and from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. Friday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in Gibbon and will continue for one hour prior to time of service at the church on Friday.
Marcella is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Norbert Warren of Gibbon; and by nieces, Jean Thurk and her husband, Clyde, of Bloomington, Gayle Faust and her husband, Jeff, of Eugene, Oregon, and JoAnn Monahan and her husband, Kevin, of Farmington.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Olson on December 27, 1980, a brother, Willard, and a brother, Ervin in infancy.
Marcella was born June 28, 1913, in Gibbon to Joseph and Louise (Lehrke) Bandow. She attended Immanuel Lutheran School in Gibbon and later the Gibbon Public Schools. On March 26, 1939 she married Leonard Olson at the Holy Communion Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. After marriage they lived in Gibbon. She had been employed at Hands, Inc. in Winthrop. In 1996 they moved to Winthrop. She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church and was a member of the Ladies Guild at church, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Gibbon and later in Winthrop, was a volunteer at the Winthrop Good Samaritan Center in Winthrop for many years, and a member of the Gibbon Senior Citizens Center.

Sarah A. Wittenberg of Winthrop, died Tuesday, June 18, 2002, at the Glencoe Regional Health Services.
Services are 11 a.m. Saturday, June 22, at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winthrop, with burial in the Winthrop Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m., Friday, and 7:30-8:30 a.m. Saturday, at the Dalin Hantge Funeral Chapel, in Winthrop, and will continue one hour prior to the time of services at the church on Saturday.

Jim Rolloff, 59, of 1317 Southridge Road in New Ulm, died Thursday morning, June 20, 2002, at his home.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, June 22, 2002, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in New Ulm. Burial with full military honors conducted by the New Ulm veterans organizations will follow at the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery in New Ulm.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday and 7- 9 a.m. Saturday at Firle Funeral Home in New Ulm and one hour prior to services at the church.
James Arley Rolloff, the son of Arley and Phyllis (Runck) Rolloff, was born Dec. 15, 1942, in New Ulm. He grew up on the family farm in Milford Township where he attended country schools and later New Ulm High School. After graduating from NUHS in 1960, he attended the University of Minnesota in St. Paul, earning a bachelor of science degree in Dairy Industry/Food Science in 1964. He received National Guard training at Fort Jackson, S.C. and returned to New Ulm in 1965.
He was united in marriage to Marion Zieske on May 28, 1966, at First Methodist Church in Sleepy Eye. They made their home in Waterloo, Iowa, where he worked for the Carnation Company for five years. In 1970, Jim took the position of Corporate Quality Control Director for AMPI in New Ulm. He continued with the company until disability caused his retirement in 1999.
He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in New Ulm; Minnesota Sanitarians Association, serving as president for a term; 3A Sanitary Standards Group; Interstate Milk Shippers Association and the National Milk Producers Interstate Milk Committee; North Central Cheese Association Board of Directors; Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point Program; and Jim also served on the District 88 School Board for six years, 1977-1983.
Survivors include his wife Marion of New Ulm; daughter Eva Carlson and her husband Joel of Oakdale; son Eric Rolloff and his wife Jennifer of Big Lake; two grandchildren, Emma and Andrew Carlson of Oakdale; parents Arley and Phyllis Rolloff of New Ulm; brother Carl Rolloff and his wife Lida of New Ulm; mother-in-law Jocelyn Zieske-Sasse of Sleepy Eye; sisters-in-law, Betty Trebesch of New Ulm, Janice Buggert and her husband Fremont of Mesa, Ariz.; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father-in-law Fred Zieske and stepfather-in-law Dan Sasse.

Sarah Anna Adelia (Jahnke) Wittenberg was born March 12, 1918, in Moltke Township, Sibley County, Minn., to Henry and Alvina (Pockrandt) Jahnke.

Eleanor "Ellie" Blumhoefer, 69, of Fairfax died Thursday, June 20, 2002 at the Fairfax Community Home in Fairfax.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Fairfax with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Sunday at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Fairfax. There will be a parish prayer service at 7 pm Sunday at the church. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the time of the service at the church on Monday. Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm is in charge of the arrangements.
Ellie is survived by her husband, Sylvester Blumhoefer of Fairfax; daughters and sons-in-law, Dianne and Kevin Mottinger of Kenosha, Wisconsin, Julie and Robin Nesburg of Fairfax, Brenda and Mark Dressen of Redwood Falls, and Lora Lee and Eugene Treml of Lakeville; a son and daughter-in-law, Gunnery Sergeant Thomas G. Blumhoefer, USMC and his wife, Sandy of San Diego, California; grandchildren, Phillip, Erin, Renae, Daniel, Jennifer, Gordon, Amanda, Brad, Jason, Sydney, and Travis; a great grandson, Chase; sisters and brother-in-law, Connie Hubbard of Westford, Massachusetts, Bernie and Doug Wagner of Whitman, Massachusetts, and Virginia Ann Whelen of Massachusetts; a brother and sister-in-law, James "Sonny" and Linda DeWolfe of Hudson, Massachusetts; also by many nieces and nephew and multitudes of friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter, Linda; and a brother, Robert DeWolfe.
Ellie was born on May 10, 1933 in Boston, Massachusetts to Walter and Eileen (Coolen) DeWolfe. She attended and graduated from parochial school in Boston, Massachusetts. On August 8, 1953 she married Sylvester Blumhoefer at the St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Minneapolis. In 1955 they moved to Fairfax where she was a homemaker and a part-time librarian for the Fairfax Public Library in Fairfax. She enjoyed reading, gardening, cooking, crafts, and spending time with her family and friends. Ellie lost an extended battle to the ravages of diabetes and its complications. Despite a multitude of physical and emotional challenges, she faced death the way she lived her life, with courage, dignity, grand humor and most importantly, with great faith in God, her family, and her many friends. She was deeply loved and will be fondly remembered and sadly missed.
Ellie was a member of the St. Andrew's Catholic Church, St. Ann's Catholic Aid Society, Christian Mothers Society, Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary, and the DAV Auxiliary all in Fairfax.

Laura "Tootie"Garten, 82, of St. James died Friday morning, June 21, 2002, at the Luther Memorial Home in Madelia.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 24, 2002, at Augustana Lutheran Church in St. James, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 4 - 8 p.m. Sunday at the Pease Funeral Home in St. James, and one hour prior to services at the church.
Laura Ruth Minnie Lorenz, the daughter of Charles and Mary (Knoll) Lorenz, was born May 27, 1920, in Butterfield. She spent her youth on the family farm in Watonwan County and attended country school as a child. She was united in marriage to Emmett Garten on Sept. 5, 1937, in St. James. Following their marriage, they made their home in St. James. Laura worked many years for Tony Downs in Madelia. The family moved to various communities and spent several years in Dodge Center, where she and her husband worked as caretakers for the senior citizen apartments. They returned to St. James in 1996, and her husband died in 1999.
She was an active member of Augustana Lutheran Church, serving in various capacities. She was also a volunteer for the Senior Nutrition Site and was a Boy Scout volunteer. She enjoyed working on various crafts and also donated much of her time to the Pleasant View Nursing Home in St. James.
Survivors include her sons, Donald Garten and his wife Patty of Eagle Lake, Terry Garten and his wife Cindy of Bloomington; daughters, Shirley Raatz and her husband Arlo of New Ulm, Joan Klinkner and her husband Michael of Madelia, Mary Garten of New Ulm, Lorie Garten and her friend Danny Wiedow of Lake Crystal, Susan Cowell and her husband Kevin of St. James; 21 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; brothers, Carl Lorenz and his wife Jenny and Lester Lorenz and his wife Zila, all of Trimont, Alvin Lorenz and his wife Laura of Butterfield; sister Myrtle Stolze and her husband Lyle of New Ulm; sister-in-law, Lila Mathias and her husband Harvey of St. James; brother-in-law, Max Garten and his wife Ruth of Sun City, Ariz.; nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Lavern Garten in 1951, and Rodney Garten in 1962, and brother Ervin Lorenz, grandson Matthew Klinkner and granddaughter Sandra Kay Nimz.

Claud G. Johnson, 84, of rural Bird Island, died Wednesday, June 19, 2002, at the Renville County Hospital in Olivia.
Funeral services are 1:30 p.m. Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church, Osceola Township, rural Hector with Rev. Elisabeth Johnson officiating. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 5 - 8 p.m. Sunday at Dirks-Blem Funeral Home in Bird Island, and continues Monday at the church for one hour prior to services.
Claud G. Johnson was born Sept. 10, 1917, at Pocahontas, Iowa, to Reemty and Mary (Wieker) Johnson. In 1919, the family moved to a farm at Osceola Township, Renville County, where he attended School District #110. Claud was a lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Osceola Township, where he was baptized and confirmed. Claud married Vivian Buhman on Jan. 27, 1940, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church Parsonage in Hector. They made their home on their farm in Melville Township, rural Bird Island, and born to them were four children, Joyce, Mavis, Valorie and Gayle. He enjoyed farming, dancing, hunting, fishing, playing cards, cooking and gardening. Claud and Vivian loved going dancing, having people visit at the farm and many special times were spent with family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Claud had been a member of the Melville Township Board for many years, the Bird Island School Board and St. John's Church Board, where he had served many offices. He had also volunteered with the United Way for many years. Claud died on Wednesday, June 19, 2002, at the Renville County Hospital in Olivia.
Claud is survived by his three daughters, Joyce (and David) Reich of Minneapolis, Mavis (and John) Bennett of Fargo, N.D., and Valorie Lloyd of San Mateo, Calif.; son Gayle Johnson of Winthrop; nine grandchildren; five great grandchildren; brother Archie (and Wilma) Johnson of Watertown; and two sisters, Margie (and Owen) Firle of St. Anthony, and Mary Ann Morgan of Aptos, Calif. Claud was preceded in death by his parents; wife Vivian on Nov. 27, 2000; son-in-law Lynn Lloyd; and brothers, Fred Johnson and Raymond Johnson.
