William “Bill” W. Scandin
April Scandin is saddened by the death of her father, William “Bill” W. Scandin. He died Tues., May 15, 2001, in a Duluth hospital. He was 54.

He was born in Duluth. He was a graduate of Cathedral High School in 1965. He was employed as a pressman for Service Printers, Davidson Printing Co., and was working at Pro-Print. He was a member of the Graphic Communications International Union Local 76 in Duluth.

He is also survived by his mother June (Dan) Remick of Duluth, a son Troy (Tammi) Scandin of Sioux Falls, SD, their mother Margaret “Peggy” Scandin of Proctor, a grandson, a sister, a brother, four aunts, an uncle, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.

Joseph Alfred “Joe” Saburn
Joanne Christian of Twig is mourning the death of her father Joseph Alfred “Joe” Saburn. He died Tues., May 1, 2001 in Duluth. He was 85.

The Minnesota Ave. resident was born May 12, 1915. His first job was at the age of 3, shoveling sawdust in a boxcar for three cents a day at the sawmill that bordered his family’s property in Nickerson, Minn. At the age of 8, he worked out West at various ranches, running cattle, breaking in broncos and mending fences. He worked as a cowboy throughout his young adult years, until his marriage to Hazel Halmet of Palo in 1937. Later, Joe served as a Navy Sea Bee in World War II in the South Pacific. After the war, Joe became a welder and iron worker in Minnesota, Upper Michigan and Illinois. In 1962, he moved to Phoenix and opened his own small engine repair shop. He retired from there in 1978 and moved to Duluth in 1990, and had lived in the area since then.

Joe was preceded in death by his wife Hazel in 1988, a daughter, a brother, and two sisters.

He is also survived by his fiancee Myrtle Garlie of Duluth, a son, and 38 members of his immediate family.

Burial was in Sunrise Memorial Park, with military honors accorded by the Duluth VFW Honor Guard.

Herman C. Baske
Herman C. Baske, who was born in Proctor and lived here all his life, died Sat., May 26, 2001, in a Duluth hospital. He was 86.

He was born to August and Ida Baske on Aug. 6, 1914, in Proctor. He worked for the Duluth Missabe and Iron Range Railway for many years, retiring in 1974.

Herman was preceded in death by his parents, and his sisters Louise and Bertha.

Surviving are his brother Fred Baske, a sister Elsie LaFave, and special niece, Susan LaFave.

Private burial was in Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Mamie Elizabeth Halli
Mamie Elizabeth Halli, who had been a Midway Township resident for over 40 years, died Sun., May 27, 2001 in Nopeming Care Center. She was 97.

The former Halli Rd. resident was born in Biwabik. Mamie grew up in Palo, where she attended school. She had been employed as a cook at Nopeming Nursing Home for 38 years, retiring in 1968. Prior to working at Nopeming, she cooked at various places in the area.

She was a member of Pine Hill Lutheran Church. Mamie enjoyed fishing, flowers and had a good sense of humor.

She was preceded in death by her first husband Rudolph Sundin, her second husband Arthur W. Halli, five brothers, and two sisters.

Survivors include sisters Sylvia (Elton) Brodin of Duluth and Jennie Tomlinson of Wayzata, and many nieces and nephews.

A private family graveside service will be held in Pine Hill Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Dolores Frances Knudsen
Dolores Frances Knudsen, who was raised in Proctor and was a Proctor High graduate, died Tues., May 22, 2001 in her Duluth home.

She was born in Eveleth. Following high school she attended beauty school in Duluth and worked at a salon in Proctor. She married Einar Gustav Knudsen in 1942. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Duluth Heights.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Lorraine Newton, and brothers Leo Braun, Jr. and Raymond Braun.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years Einar of Duluth, a daughter Margaret Peters (Mike Booker) of Duluth, sons Edward (Susan) Knudsen of Duluth, Dale (Shirley) Knudsen of Spring Lake Park, Minn. and Mark (Debbie) Knudsen of Proctor, ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Interment was in Oneota Cemetery.

Edward Auge
Long time Proctor resident and 1940 Proctor High School graduate, Edward Auge passed away Fri., May 25, 2001 in a Duluth hospital. He was 80.

He was born in Duluth. He worked for the DM&IR railroad for 23 years, and Diamond Tool, from which he retired after 25 years of service. Ed was a member of Legion of Mary, past member of the Knights of Columbus, prayer chain, worked with the Boy Scouts, was vice president of Diamond Tool union until he retired, and president of Union Label. Edward loved sports, especially football, and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years Dorothy in 1985, his parents, brothers Roy, Richard and Dode, sisters Dolores, Margaret, Alsace, Marcella and Gloria, and special friend Mary Myers.

He is survived by sons Clifford (Patricia) of Duluth and Roger “Rocky” (Glenda) of Matthews, N.C., grandsons Brian (Kristen) and Todd, granddaughters Tammy (Craig) Day, Toni (Roman) Mann, Brenda (Sean) Harris and Tina (Fred) Dial, two great-grandsons, five great granddaughters, two brothers and two sisters.

Burial was in Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Timothy Wayne Wagner
Services were held for Timothy Wayne Wagner. The former Proctorite and 1975 Proctor High School graduate died Sun., May 27, 2001 in a Duluth Hospice. He was 44.

He was born in St. Paul and lived in Hermantown, Brainerd, Proctor and Duluth. Tim studied art at the University of Wisconsin-Superior, where he met his wife of 22 years. He enjoyed a deep, long interest in art, music and collecting.

Tim worked at St. Luke’s Hospital, Great Northern Music Center and Marshall Hardware, each of which the family would like to thank for their kind support.

Tim was preceded in death by his mother Shirley Wagner.

He is survived by his wife Doreen, a son Carl, father DeWayne (Gerrie) Wagner of Proctor, and a sister Sandra Wagner of Two Harbors.

Thomas Sobczak
Dan Sobczak and Dave Sobczak of Proctor are saddened by the loss of their brother, Thomas Sobczak. He died Mon., May 21, 2001 in his Duluth home. He was 52.

He was born in Duluth. He graduated from Denfeld High School and worked as an electrician for Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad for 25 years.

He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and a member of American Legion Post 71.

He is also survived by his wife Marketta of Duluth, his parents Leonard and Joyce Sobczak of Duluth, a son, two daughters, another brother, and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Interment was in Forest Hill cemetery with military honors accorded by the Duluth VFW Honor Guard.

Vancel “Bud” E. Lind
Services were held for Vancel “Bud” E. Lind. He died Wed., June 6, 2001 in Lakeshore Lutheran Nursing Home. He was 74.

The Sixth Street Proctor resident was born in Alexandria, Minn. He was an Army veteran of World War II. After serving in the Army, he came to Duluth and married his wife of 52 years, Castella Ellefson, on June 11, 1949. He worked for Duluth Missabe and Iron Range Railway, Bridge and Building Department. He retired in 1980 after 32 years of service.

Bud enjoyed hunting, fishing and family get-togethers. After retiring he took up golf, which he really loved.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers LeRoy and Jerry, and sisters Isabell and Delores “Dolly”.

He is survived by his wife Castella, sons Ellsworth (Carol), Leonard, Wayne and Keith, a daughter Adele (Bruce) John, grandchildren Tammy (David) Dailey, Eric, Mark, Nathan (Tracy), Joshua, Sarah, Rebecca, Daniel Lind and Byron John, sisters Carol Jean (John) Hedquist and Geraldine Newbauer, and many nieces and nephews.

Entombment was in Sunrise Memorial Park, Hermantown. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Cecelia A. Erickson
Cecelia A. Erickson, who lived on Old Highway 61 in Proctor, died Sat., June 9, 2001 in a Duluth hospital. She was 80.

The Duluth resident was born in Duluth. The family had a farm near Munger where Cecelia began to develop her talent as a cook. She married Carl W. Erickson Dec. 30, 1944, in Duluth. She worked at many different places over the years including Diamond Tool and Horseshoe Co., Fraser Shipyards and Diamond Match. She also worked at other places including the Radisson Hotel and the Holiday Inn. Her last job was in housekeeping at Nopeming Nursing Home. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church-Duluth Heights and a former member of St. James Catholic Church. She enjoyed gardening and entertaining. She loved to cook and bake and put up jams and jellies. Soups were her specialty.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Carl W. Erickson in 1992, brothers Michael and Walter Tondryk, sisters Violet Jankowski and Ardelle Anderson.

She is survived by a daughter Kathleen (Corey) Olson of Duluth, brothers Lawrence (Margie) Tondryk of Esko, Frank (Kathleen) Tondryk of Saginaw, sisters Lorraine (Ellsworth) Fermenich of Cloquet, Marlene (Richard) Kellett of Lillian, Ala., Patricia (Richard) Bosiacki of Hermantown, grandchildren Christopher (Danette) Thacker, Jason Wuolu, and many special nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Interment was in Sunrise Memorial Park.
