Leona Hayes, 76, of rural Lafayette died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, at the New Ulm Medical Center in New Ulm.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at the Bernadotte Lutheran Church in Bernadotte Township, Nicollet County, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 4 - 8 p.m. today at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm, and will continue for one hour prior to the time of service at church on Friday.
Leona is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Richard Ramsden of Cobham, England, Jennifer Doughty of Rochester, and Patricia and Barry Rogne of Northfield; sons and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Patricia Hayes of rural Lafayette, and Larrie Hayes of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Amos Hayes on Jan. 24, 2002; and by sisters, Elaine Malmberg and Marjorie Johnson.
Leona was born Aug. 9, 1926, in New Ulm, to Edwin and Florence (Hed) Pierson. She attended Winthrop schools and was a graduate of Winthrop High School. She married Amos Hayes on Nov. 21, 1948, at the Bernadotte Lutheran Church in Bernadotte Township, Nicollet County. After marriage she was a homemaker and mother while they farmed in Bernadotte Township, Nicollet County. She continued to live on the family farm until the present. She was a member of the Bernadotte Lutheran Church, where she sang in the choir, she was a member and past president of the WELCA, a member of AAL and the Order of the Eastern Star.

Irene Walter, 96, of Deephaven, formerly of the Springfield and Cobden areas, died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, at the Hillcrest Care Center in Wayzata.
Funeral service will be 12 p.m. today at Grace Lutheran Church in Deephaven, with internment in the Springfield Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service at the church.
Irene is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Darnele and Libby Krumwiede of Deephaven; daughter LaVonne Polzin of Evan; grandchildren, Perry Polzin and wife Mary of Stanford, Mont., Linda Wieland and husband Kevin of New Ulm; and Bradley and wife Janice of Stanford, Mont.; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; sisters, Lillian Gavic of Minneapolis, Lucille Fendrick of Illinois, and Virginia Hilleberg and husband Clifton of Bloomington.
Irene was born Sept. 1, 1906, to Albert H. and Inga (Gilbertson) Anderson in the Sleepy Eye area. She attended rural school. In 1926, she married Martin Krumwiede. They lived in the Cobden area. In 1944, she married Wilbert E. Walter. They moved to Deephaven, which had been her home for 57 years. In October of 2001, Irene entered the Hillcrest Care Center in Wayzata.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Martin (1936) husband, Wilbert (1973); sisters, Rosella Vanderwerf, Elva Becker, and Esther Buerrson; and son-in-law Raymond Polzin (1996).

Roland Rasmussen, 91, of Wabasso, died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, at the Redwood Area Hospital.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Wabasso, with burial in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Johnsonville Township.
Visitation will be 4 - 8 p.m. Friday at Sunset Funeral Home in Wabasso, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. Military rites will be conducted by the Victor Hirsch American Legion Post of Wabasso.
Roland is survived by his wife Lorene of Wabasso Health Care Center.
Arrangements are with The Sunset Burial Association of Wabasso.

Hertha M. Rettmann, 94, of Winthrop, died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, at the Winthrop Good Samaritan Center.
Services are 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 14, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Bismarck Township, Sibley County, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be 5-7:30 p.m. Friday at the Dalin-Hantge Funeral Chapel in Winthrop and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
Hertha M. Rettmann was born on Jan. 7, 1908, in Bismarck Township, Sibley County, to Herman and Bertha (Schultz) Rettmann.
She is survived by her sisters, Anna Besemer of Winthrop, and Olga Gehrke of rural Winthrop; and brother Martin Rettmann of Hutchinson.

Alice M. Sorenson, 88, of Morgan, died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, at the Redwood Falls Area Hospital.
Services are 10:30 a.m., Monday, Dec. 16, at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Evan, with burial in Morgan City Cemetery.
Visitation is 6-9 p.m., Sunday, at Nelson-Martin Funeral Service in Morgan and continues one hour before the service Monday at the church.

Ida Gregg, 86, died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002, at Sleepy Eye Care Center.
Funeral services are 2 p.m., Monday, Dec. 16, at Faith United Methodist Church in Sleepy Eye with burial in Home Cemetery.
Visitation is 12-2 p.m. Monday at the church.
Arrangements are handled by Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye.
She is survived by sons, Steven of Sleepy Eye, Jerry of Citrus Heights, Calif.; sister, Alice Loe of Bird Island; and five grandchildren.
She was born Jan. 1, 1916, to Herman, Sr. and Olga (Noltemeier) Dyrssen in Moorhead.

Delores Helget, 77, of Sleepy Eye, died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002, at the Sleepy Eye Hospital.
Services are 10:30 a.m., Monday, Dec. 16, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Sunday and 7:30-9:30 a.m. at Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye. There will be a Christian Mothers rosary at 4 p.m. and a parish prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Delores was born on September 4, 1925, in Home Township, Brown County, Minn., the daughter of George and Alma (Wilfahrt) Schmid. She grew up in Milford Township. Delores married Vernard Helget on August 8, 1945, at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm. After marriage she and her husband farmed together in Home Township. They retired from farming and moved to Sleepy Eye in 1995. Delores worked for many years at the Orchid Inn in Sleepy Eye. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Christian Mothers and CCW. Delores enjoyed playing cards, embroidering, gardening and spending time with her family and friends.
She is survived by her children, Ronald and wife Gloria Helget of Sleepy Eye, Mary Ann and husband Richard Krebs of Sleepy Eye, Linda and husband Scott Peterson of Sleepy Eye, Larry Helget of Sleepy Eye, Lori and husband Thomas Deibele of Sleepy Eye, Kathy and husband Craig Larson of Hanska, 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, Harold Schmid of Sleepy Eye; and sister, Shirley and husband Wallace Wendinger of New Ulm.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Vernard Helget on July 10, 2001.

Maria Monique Rodriguez Maria Monique Rodriguez, 4, of St. James, died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002 at St. James Health Services Hospital.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 16, at LaRoca Church with burial in Calvary Cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Sunday and 7:30-8:30 a.m. Monday at Sturm Funeral Home, St. James; and continues one hour before services at the church.
She is survived by parents, Rosa and Israel Rodriguez of St. James; sister, Alexis Sosa; grandparents, Juan and Francisca Sosa of St. James and Maria Rodriguez of San Benito, Texas.
She was born April 19, 1998, in St. James to Rosa and Israel Rodriguez.

Alice Sorenson, 88, of Morgan, died Wednesday, Dec. 11, at Redwood Area Hospital in Redwood Falls.
Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 16, at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Evan with burial in Morgan City Cemetery.
Visitation is 6-9 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15, at Nelson-Martin Funeral Service in Morgan and one hour before the service at the church Monday.
She is survived by sons, Kenneth of Apple Valley, James of Morgan; daughter Marcella Madsen of Albuquerque, N.M.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was born on Feb. 20, 1914, in Morgan Township in Redwood County, to Soren Peter and Mary (Jensen) Peterson.

Peter F. Stoesz, 94, of Darfur, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at Immanuel-St. Joseph's Hospital, Mankato.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, at Bethel Mennonite Church with burial at First Mennonite Church of Butterfield Cemetery, Butterfield.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Monday and 7:30-8:30 a.m. Tuesday at Bjerum Funeral Home, Mountain Lake and Tuesday at the church, one hour prior to the service.
He is survived by his wife, Elfriede Stoesz of Darfur; a son, Ronald of Omaha, Neb.; a daughter, Judie of Darfur; eight grandchildren; three great0grandchildren.
He was born April 21, 1908, to John J. and Aganetha (Friesen) Stoesz in Adrian Township, Watonwan County.

Bertha Green, age 91, of Sleepy Eye, MN, died Friday, December 13, 2002, at Divine Providence Community Home in Sleepy Eye where she had been a resident since December of 1992.
Services are Tuesday, December 17, 2002, at 3:00 PM, at Divine Providence Community Home Chapel, Sleepy Eye, with internment at Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Divine Providence Community Home Chapel, Sleepy Eye, MN.
Bertha was born on March 3, 1911 in Mulligan Township, Brown County, MN, the daughter of Park and Theresa (Nowak) Green. She grew up and attended country school in Mulligan Township. Bertha was the caretaker of Henry Groebner for many years. She also worked at Del Monte, was a cook at the Del Roy and cleaned at Divine Providence Community Home. She moved to Sleepy Eye and was a member of St. Marys Catholic Church. She enjoyed visiting with family and friends and going to dances.
Survivors include her brother-in-law, Irlin Messerschmidt of Apple Valley, CA, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Lonnie, Edward and Daniel, and sisters, Viola Pautzke, Ellen Green, Ada Messerschmidt and Marie Huiras.

Donald Van Prooien, 74, of North Patomac, Md., formerly of Pine City, died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002 in rural North Patomac, Md.
Services are 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002 at Lamberton United Methodist Church. Burial with military honors will be at the Lamberton Cemetery.
Visitation is 11 a.m. until services Thursday at the church.
Nelson-Martin Funeral Home of Redwood Falls is handling arrangements.

Ebert Schuch, 86, of Glencoe, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002 at Glencoe Regional Health Services.
Services are 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 16, 2002 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Mountville, Dryden Township.
Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002 at Hantge Funeral Chapel in Brownton and Monday at the church, one hour prior to the service.

Marlys Negen, 59, of 1020 N. Garden Street, New Ulm, died Friday, December 13, 2002 at the New Ulm Medical Center.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Redeemer Lutheran Church in New Ulm with Rev. Robert Hines officiating. Burial will be Tuesday at the Fairview Cemetery in Renville. Visitation will be one hour prior to service at the church on Monday. Schmucker Funeral Service of New Ulm is handling the arrangements.
Marlys Ann Mickels, the daughter of Wilford and Agnes (Peters) Mickels was born March 31, 1943 in Maynard, Minnesota. She spent her youth in Clara City where she attended parochial school. She married Gerald Essendrup in Watertown, SD. They made their home in Clara City for several years. She was united in marriage to Harold Negen on March 26, 1966 in Watertown, SD. Following their marriage, they lived in Renville, and later Windom, where Marlys worked for Toro. They moved to New Ulm in 1972. She worked for 3M in New Ulm for nearly fifteen years, retiring to care for her husband when he became ill. Following his death in January 1996, she continued to make her home in New Ulm. She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church.
Survivors include her sons, Steven Essendrup and his wife Cindy of San Antonio, TX, David Essendrup and his wife Paula of Atwater, Michael Essendrup of Alexandria; daughters, Karen Essendrup of Willmar, Susan Kuck of Eden Prairie; seven grandchildren; sisters, Lois Isley and her husband Jerry of Willmar, Dorothy Henslin of Maynard; mother-in-law, Maggie Negen of Renville; sister-in-law, Laverne Bruns and her husband Andrew of Danube; nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her husband Harold, she was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Mickels.

Frank Curry, 74, of Apple Valley, died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002, at Abbott Northwestern Hospital, Minneapolis.
He is survived by his wife Donna; children David (Jill) and Roxanne (Gary) Irons; grandchildren, Jonathon, Erik, Benjamin, Noah, and Gabriel; sister Mary Ann (Bill) Smith; sister-in-law Marlys (Jarvis) Girard; brother-in-law, Dick Fuller.
Service is Monday 11 a.m. at Hope Presbyterian Church, Richfield. Mn., 7132 Portland Ave. S. Visitation is one hour prior to the service at the church and today 4-6 p.m., Morris Nilsen Chapel, 6527, Portald Ave. S.
He is survived by his wife Donna; children David (Jill) and Roxanne (Gary) Irons; grandchildren, Jonathon, Erik, Benjamin, Noah, and Gabriel; sister Mary Ann (Bill) Smith; sister-in-law Marlys (Jarvis) Girard; brother-in-law, Dick Fuller.

Melva Blackstad, 73, of 500 North State Street in New Ulm, died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, at the New Ulm Medical Center in New Ulm, after a two-and-a-half year battle with cancer.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, at the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm, with burial in the New Ulm City Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 - 8 p.m. Tuesday and 7:30 - 8 a.m. Wednesday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the time of the service at the church on Wednesday.
Melva is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy and Dwight Pettersen of New Ulm, Cindy and Steve Strassburg of Kewaskum, Wis., Kris and Randy Zimmer of Milaca, Tammy and Darryl Harris of Fairmont, and Patty and Brian Kelm of Sauk Rapids; sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Cindy Blackstad of Faribault, Dave and Elizabeth Blackstad of New Ulm, and Jon and Amy Blackstad of Austin; 18 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren; a sister, Doris Hilbert of New Ulm; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Genny Wendland of New Ulm; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Ruth and Orin Schultz of New Ulm; and a sister-in-law, Mildred Haugen of Grande Center, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Ray Blackstad on Jan. 10, 1981; and a brother, Roger Wendland in 1954.
Melva was born on March 22, 1929, in New Ulm to Robert and Hertha (Geisler) Wendland. She graduated in 1947 from the New Ulm Public High School. On May 7, 1949, she married Ray Blackstad in Hutchinson. After marriage she worked for many years for the New Ulm Telephone Company as a telephone operator. Melva was a very loving and caring mother who enjoyed spending her time with her family. She was a giving person who loved to do things for others. Melva was a member of the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm.

Adella E. Kistner, 83, of Gaylord, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at her home.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sibley Township.
Visitation is 4 - 8 p.m. today and 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Arrangements are with the Egesdal Funeral Home in Gaylord.
She is survived by her sons, Robert Kistner of Gaylord, Duane Kistner of Arlington, Allen Kistner of Arlington, Roger Kistner of Gaylord, Donald Kistner of Gaylord, and Richard Kistner of Gaylord; daughters, Diane Alson Meyer of Woodlawn, Tenn., Sharon Quast of Gaylord, Carol Boettcher of Arlington, Bonnie Paul of Brownton, and Pattie Boeder of Gaylord; brothers, William Hardel of Gaylord, and Ernest Hardel of Gaylord; sisters, Laura Renneke of Le Sueur, Ruth Sander of Henderson, and Ethel Mathwig of Kasota; 25 grandchildren; 26 great-great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
Adella E. Kistner was born Nov. 2, 1919, in Kelso Township, Sibley County, to William and Laura (Ayer) Hardel.
