Margaret Bergstrom, 79, of New Ulm, died Monday morning, Dec. 23, 2002 at the Lafayette Good Samaritan Assisted Living Center.
A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 27, at First United Methodist Church in New Ulm.
Schmucker Funeral Service of New Ulm is handling the arrangements.
Margaret Curtis, the daughter of Lee and Lena (Hayes) Curtis, was born Dec. 27, 1922, in Winchester, Ill. The family lived in many areas due to her father's work. After graduating from Roosevelt High School in Fresno, Calif., in 1940, Margaret attended Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. She was united in marriage to Arno W. Bergstrom on Nov. 18, 1950 at Wesley United Methodist Church in Mason City, Iowa. They made their home on the family farm in Brighton Township, Nicollet County, for many years and wintered in Mission, Texas, since 1978. Her husband died in 1992. She was a former member of Brighton Methodist Church and more recently attended St. Mark's Methodist Church in McAllen, Texas. She was a past leader and project leader of the Bernadotte 4-H Club; den mother of Lafayette Cub Pack 2, Den 2 and was active helping with Lafayette Boy Scout Troop 2. She served 13 years as board member of Minnesota Valley Action Council as well as several other state and local civic organizations. She and her husband were employed by the Minnesota State Fair for many years. Margaret was also a volunteer for the New Ulm Area Chamber of Commerce in recent years.
Survivors include her children, Diana Bergstrom of St. Paul, Arno Bergstrom and his wife Linda of Gig Harbor, Wash., Clarice Poncin and her husband Steve of Hastings, Peggy Pierson and her husband Roger of New Ulm, Ted Bergstrom and his wife Barb of New Ulm, Betsy White of Steamboat Springs, Colo.; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Wanda Gieseke of Lafayette; and her dog, Molly.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Samantha Pierson.

Leo H. Deterling, 74, of Raymond and formerly of Fairfax and New Ulm, died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002 at his home.
Services are 11 a.m., Friday, Dec. 27, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Raymond, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 5-8 p.m., Thursday, at Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar and continues one hour before services at the church.
He is survived by his wife, Rosella; sons, Allen of Raymond, Dean of Clara City; daughter, Myrna Prekker of Longview, Texas; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; sister, Harvey Deterling of Baudette; and sister, Marlis Schmidt of New Ulm.
He was born Aug. 1, 1928, in Green Isle to Elsie (Gorr) and Leo W. Deterling.

Emma Linnet Groff, infant daughter of Jeffrey and Jennifer Groff of Springfield who are currently serving in the U.S. Air Force in Germany, died Dec. 15, 2002, at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center of Germany.
Services are 10 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 28, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Springfield, with burial in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye.
Visitation is 8:30-10 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Sturm Funeral Home of Springfield is handling arrangements.
She is survived by parents, Jeffrey and Jennifer Groff; maternal grandparents, Mark and Linda Jones of Oak Grove, Mo.; uncle Mark Jones Jr. of Oak Grove, Mo.; paternal grandparents, Leonard and Janet Groff of Springfield; and aunt, Melissa Groff of Springfield.
Emma Linnet Groff was born Dec. 15, 2002, in Landstuhl, Germany, to Jeffrey and Jennifer Groff.

Leah Kjelshus, 58, of Hanska, died Monday morning, Dec. 23, 2002, at the New Ulm Medical Center.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 27, at Zion Lutheran Church in Hanska with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. Friday at Schmucker Funeral Service in Hanska and one hour prior to services at the church.
Leah Rae Ahlness, the daughter of Myron and Vernelle (Frederickson) Ahlness, was born March 18, 1944 at Madelia. She grew up on the family farm in Lake Hanska Township where she attended rural district 67 school and later Hanska High School. After graduating in 1962, she worked at the Sleepy Eye State Bank. She was united in marriage to Orlin Kjelshus on Sept. 12, 1964, at Lake Hanska Lutheran Church. The couple farmed in Lake Hanska Township for ten years, before moving into Hanska. She had worked for the former AUI in Sleepy Eye, and spent most of her married life raising her children, and later cherishing her grandchildren. Leah was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.
Because of her love of animals, memorials may be directed to the Humane Society. She also enjoyed shopping, particularly rummage sales.
Survivors include her husband; daughter, Dawn Kuck and her husband Dan of New Ulm; sons, Brent Kjelshus and his wife Jennifer of Hanska, Ryan Kjelshus and his wife Mandi of Perham; seven grandchildren, Makayla, Kalley, and Kasey Kuck, Mackenzie, Sawyer, Hunter, and Hayden Kjelshus; mother and stepfather, Vernelle and Joel Botten, Sr. of Hanska; sister-in-law, Janet Johnson and her husband Darwin of Prior Lake; nieces and nephews; and her best friend, Susan Leske of Plymouth.
She was preceded in death by her father, Myron Ahlness.
Memorials are preferred.

Veronica M. Smith, 67, of Arlington, died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002, at Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia.
A memorial Mass is at 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 28, at Our Lady of the Prairie Church in Belle Plaine. Burial will be at a later date in Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery in Belle Plaine.
Visitation starts at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Kolden Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
She is survived by sons, Ken of Green Isle, Dave of Belle Plaine, Pat of Henderson, Mike of Jordan and Paul Traxler of Belle Plaine; daughter, Kathy Neisen of Gaylord, Sherry Kuphal of Gaylord; sister, Mary Ann Shaughnessy of Belle Plaine; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was born June 26, 1935, in Jessenland, Township, Sibley County, to Raymond and Veronica (Hensler) Healy.

Eleanore M. Winkelman, 98, of St. James, died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, at Pleasantview Good Samaritan Center in St. James.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, at Augustana Lutheran Church in St. James, with burial in Mt. Hope Cemetery, St. James.
She is survived by son, DeWayne Winkelman of rural Ormsby; daughter, Glennis Hagemann of St. James; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; sisters, Margaret Sherman of Fairmont, Vera Krause of Edina, and Velma Fogerlund of Faribault.
She was born Feb. 27, 1904, to Paul and Julia (Flohrs) Krause in rural Ormsby.

Ruth May Bigot, 97, of Springfield, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield.
Services will be 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 30, at St. John Lutheran Home Chapel in Springfield, with burial in the Springfield City Cemetery. Visitation will be 12 - 1 p.m. Monday at the St. John Luthearn Home Chapel. Arrangements are with the Sturm Funeral Home in Springfield.
Ruth May Bigot was born Dec. 6, 1905, in Lakefied, to Levi and Carrie (Brown) Kephart.

Mary Ann Bierl, 96, of Wanda, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, at Valley View Manor in Lamberton.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 30, at St. Mathias Catholic Church in Wanda, with burial in St. Mathias Catholic Cemetery in Wanda.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Sunday at St. Mathias Catholic Church, Wanda, and one hour prior to the service on Monday. There will be a rosary at 5:30 p.m. and a parish prayer service at 7 p.m., both Sunday at the church. Sturm Funeral Home of Lamberton is handling arrangements.
Mary is survived by her children, Joan Baumann of Walnut Grove, Lorena Jenniges of Wanda, Rollie Bierl of Wanda, Mark Bierl of Wanda, Carol Jones of Bloomington, Peter Bierl of Wanda, and Clarice Wielinski of Eagan; 29 grandchildren, 59 great grandchildren, and eight great great grandchildren.
She was born Oct. 9, 1906 in Seaforth to Paul and Mary (Rohlik) Borte.

Sarah Johnson, age 83, of Hector, passed away Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, at the Abbott-Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, at First Lutheran Church in Hector, with internment in the First Lutheran Cemetery in Glencoe. Visitation will be 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 - 9:30 p.m., with a 7:45 p.m. prayer service, Sunday at the Hughes Funeral Home in Hector. Visitation will continue one hour prior to service at the church on Monday.
Sarah Rose Johnson was born Jan. 24, 1919, in Sumter, the daughter of Rudolph and Christine (Arlt) Riewe. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Sarah grew up on the family farm in Sumter, and attended rural school.
On April 7, 1940, Sarah was united in marriage to Kenneth Gilmore Johnson in Glencoe. The couple resided on the family farm until moving into the town of Glencoe. Sarah was employed at the Glencoe Hospital in the laundry department. After Kenneth passed away, Sarah moved to Hector, and helped at Hardware Hank by dusting and stocking freight. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Hector, and enjoyed Bingo and meals at the senior center. Sarah enjoyed her pet cats.
Sarah is survived by her son Larry Johnson and his wife Terry of Columbia, Md.; and their children, Lisa, Julie and Brian; her daughter Carol Bipes and her husband Gary of Hector; and their children, Michele and Julie; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Kenneth; an infant brother; her twin sister Clara Lenz; and her sister Ruth Tuculet.

Melvin B. McLean, 92, Madelia died Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, at Luther Memorial Home in Madelia.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 31, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Madelia, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Monday at the Pilgrim Funeral Home, Madelia, and also one hour prior to services at the church.
Survivors include a daughter, Judy McCabe of Midland, Mich.; two grandchildren; two great grandchildren; a sister Ruth Allen of Madelia; and a brother Richard (Mike) of New Ulm.
He was born Nov. 27, 1910, in Madelia to Roy (Dick) and Edna (Bristol) McLean.

Kathryn Voosen, 89, of St. Peter, formerly of New Ulm, passed away Friday, Dec. 27, 2002 in Bloomington.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, Dec. 30, 2002 at 11 a.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church in St. Peter, with interment of ashes at a later date. Memorials are preferred to St. Peter's Catholic Church.
Visitation starts at 10 a.m. Monday at the church.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Don Valentine of Bloomington; sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Linda Voosen of Bloomington, Fred and Michaele Voosen of Aberdeen, WA; a son-in-law, Dennis Schweiss of Fairfax; seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and their families and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; a daughter, Roberta; and a granddaughter, Leah.
She was born March 19, 1913 in St. Peter to Matthew and Marian Michels.

Mildred Flantz, 89, of Gaylord, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at Sunrise Cottage in Mankato.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 2, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sibley Township, rural Gaylord, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, and 7:30-8:30 a.m. Thursday at Egesdal Funeral Home in Gaylord and at the church one hour prior to the services on Thursday.
She is survived by a son, James Flantz of rural Gaylord; daughters, Marlys Kahler of Sherburn, Janice Chisolm of Annandale, Va., and Kathleen McLaughlin of Shoreview; 12 grandchildren, and 14 great granchildren.
She was born Jan. 13, 1913, to Arthur and Theresa (Schlenner) Delger.

Silas 'Si' Larson, 82, of Franklin, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at the Sunwood Good Samaritan Care Center in Redwood Falls.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 31 at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Franklin, with burial in the Franklin Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Monday at the church. Nelson-Martin Funeral Service in Redwood Falls is handling arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Fay, of Franklin; a son, Paul Larson of Redwood Falls; daughters Ann Bollinger of Rockwell, Iowa, and Kathryn Larson of Incline Village, Nev.; six grandchildren; sisters, Lois Stoner of Long Beach, Calif., Alvera Colvin of Hopkins and Jean Haugen of Redwood Falls.
He was born June 13, 1920, in Franklin to Arthur and Olga (Lund) Larson.

Marion E. McDermott, 104, of Redwood Falls, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at Gil-Mor Manor in Morgan.
Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 31, at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Redwood Falls, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be 9-10 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Nelson-Martin Funeral Service in Redwood Falls is in charge of arrangements.
She was born June 24, 1898 in LaMott, Iowa, to Fred and Elizabeth (Kilbide) Zehetner.

John E. Oldfield, 88, a former resident of New Ulm and professor at Martin Luther College, died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth. He is survived by daughters, Constance Worley (Dan) and Anne Ericson (Tom); sons, John Oldfield (Elizabeth) and Rev. James Oldfield (Colleen); younger brother, Walter Oldfield; and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other loving relatives and friends.
Gearty-Delmore Funeral Chapels (952-926-1615) handled arrangements.

Lucille Braun, 76, of Winthrop, died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002, at Sibley Medical Center in Arlington,
Funeral services are Thursday, Jan. 2, at 11 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church in Winthrop with burial in the Winthrop Cemetery.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 4-8 p.m, and Thursday from 7:30-8:30 a.m. at Dalin-Hantge Funeral Chapel in Winthrop.
Visitation will continue one hour prior to the time of services at the church on Thursday.
Lucille Augusta Selma (Bergs) Braun was born March 27, 1926, in New Auburn Township, Sibley County, Minn., to Henry and Elsie (Dahlke) Bergs.

Victor Gorres, 80, of Redwood Falls, died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002, at Sunwood Good Samaritan Care Center, Redwood Falls.
Services are 2 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 2, at St. Catherine's Catholic Church, Redwood Falls with burial in St. Mathias Catholic Cemetery, Wanda.
Visitation is 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, at Nelson-Martin Funeral Service, Redwood Falls with a prayer service at 6 p.m. at the funeral home and 1-2 p.m., Thursday at the church.
He is survived by his wife, Anna of Redwood Falls; children Bernice Marti of Rouses Point, N.Y., Steve Gorres of Redwood Falls, Phyllis Radke of Tracy; seven grandchildren; sister, Leah Zwach of Tracy; and brother, Clifford Gorres of Murdock.
He was born Aug. 5, 1922, in Willow Lake Township, Redwood County to Henry and Josephine (Starken) Gorres.

Sara E. Hartmann, 2, of Mankato, died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002, at Fairview University Children's Hospital, Minneapolis.
Services will be 10 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 4, at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Mankato.
Visitation will be Saturday at the church, one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Children's Cancer Research Fund, 4930 West 77th Street, Minneapolis, MN 55435.
Arrangements are being handled by Mankato Mortuary.

Roger Hassinger, 76, of Redwood Falls, died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002, at his home.
Services with military rites will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, Jan. 3, at First United Methodist Church, Redwood Falls. Burial will be at a later date at Redwood falls Cemetery.
Visitation is 5:30-7:30 p.m., Thursday, at Nelson-Martin Funeral Service, Redwood Falls and 9:30-10:30 a.m., Friday, at the church.
He is survived by daughters Kay Casey and Paula Poppy both of Redwood Falls.
He was born Sept. 2, 1926, to L.W. "Perk" and Helen Hassinger.

Max Hoffmann, 95, of St. James, died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002, at his home.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, Jan. 3, at St. James Catholic Church in St. James, with burial at the Calvary Cemetery in St. James.
Visitation will be 4 - 8 p.m., Thursday and 7:30 - 10 a.m., Friday at Sturm Funeral Home in St. James.
Max is survived by his wife Adeline; daughters, Joan Humphrey of Pearl, Miss., Karen Meyer of Bloomington, Maxine Howe of Gibbon, Mary Collins of Stoughton, Wis., Patricia Gall of West Salem, Wis., and Ruth Mikkelson of Hanska; sons, John Hoffmann of St. James, and Michael Hoffmann of Avon; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and sister, Anna Weicherding of Sleepy Eye.
Max Joseph Hoffmann was born Feb. 1, 1907, in Morgan to Maximillian and Anna (Seidel) Hoffmann.

Delmar 'Boots' Muehlbauer, 76, of 817 - 11th North Street in New Ulm, died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002, at the Immanuel St.Joseph's Hospital in Mankato.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 2, at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm with burial in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery in New Ulm.
Visitation will be 3 - 8 p.m., Wednesday, and 7:30 - 10:30 a.m., Thursday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. The Knights of Columbus will pray the rosary at 6:30 p.m., and there will be a parish prayer service at 7:30 p.m. both Wednesday at the funeral home.
Delmar is survived by his wife, Magdalen "Maggie" Muehlbauer of New Ulm; daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret Ross of Brooklyn Center and her special friend, Bill Rasmussen of Kasota, Barb and Dale Scheiber of Albany, and Karen and Ron Sandhurst of Fairmont; sons and daughters-in-law, Myron and Karyl Muehlbauer of Chaska and Chuck and Roxanne Muehlbauer of St. Cloud; ten grandchildren; a sister, Eva Kokesch, a resident of the Divine Providence Community Home in Sleepy Eye; and a brother, Lyle Muehlbauer, a resident of the Luther Memorial Home in Madelia.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Delmar was born July 7, 1926 in Lafayette Township, Nicollet County, to Louis and Anna (Klossner) Muehlbauer. He served in the U.S. Army from Jan. 22, 1945 to Sept. 21, 1946, and was stationed in occupied Japan. He married Magdalen Hanslick on May 3, 1949, at St. George Catholic Church in West Newton Township, Nicollet County. After marriage they farmed in Lafayette Township, Nicollet County. In 1988 they retired and moved to New Ulm. He was a member of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm, the St. Patrick's Council of the Knights of Columbus, a past member and treasurer of the Lafayette Township Board for 32 years, and was a member and secretary/treasurer of the New Ulm Rural Fire Association.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the donor's choice.
