Nancy Burke
Cindy Burke of Proctor is mourning the death of her mother, Nancy Burke, who succumbed to cancer following a yearlong battle. The Canyon resident passed away Tues., July 3 in a Duluth hospital. She was 56.

She was born in Duluth and graduated from Central High School.

She is also survived by her husband Dennis, her mother Ethel Heikkienen of Duluth, two other daughters, a sister, seven grandchildren, and many relatives and friends.

Interment was in Park Hill Cemetery.

Jeanne Brule Close
Services were held Monday for Jeanne Brule Close, formerly of Meadow St, She died Thursday, July 12, 2001, in Chris Jensen Nursing Home. She was 84.

She was born on May 15, 1917 to Francis and Marie Brule in Lake Linden, Michigan. She lived in Proctor since 1922 and graduated from Proctor High School in 1935.

Jeanne was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church from 1922 to 1998, and then moved to Pennel Park Apartments and joined St. Joseph's Catholic Church of Duluth Heights. She was a member of Daughters of Isabella for over 40 years, the Duluth Womans Club, and Bethany Lutheran Sunshine Club and the Esther Circle.

She was a former member of Credit Women International and volunteered at St. Scholastica Priory, Bennett Hall. In the 1940's and 1950's, Jeanne worked for the Albanbergs Clothing Store in downtown Duluth.

Jeanne retired in 1980 from First American National Bank/Norwest where she worked for over 18 years. She married Walter Close on October 6, 1977 in Duluth and he died in 1988.

She will be greatly missed by her five cousins, Lorraine (Richard) Hood of Franklin, Georgia, Gregory Longpre of St. Joseph. Michigan, John (Yvonne) Pflugi of Woodbury, Minn, Rita Remillard of Proctor and Jeanne Contel of Clovis, Calif; a nephew, David (Kathy) Watczak of Duluth, several great-nieces and nephews.

Burial was in Oneota Cemetery.

Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors-Bell Brothers Chapel.

Bernice Elizabeth Grace Lentz
Services will be held tomorrow for Bernice Elizabeth Grace Lentz. She died Fri., July 13, 2001 in Nopeming Care Center. She was 87.

The former 58th Ave. W. resident was born in Neenah, Wis. She attended the World Wide Church of God, was a volunteer at Westminister Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She told bible stories through the use of the flannel graphs she made. She was a volunteer tutor for the Laubach Literacy program, was a Girl Scout Leader and helped children attend camp who otherwise could not. Bernice loved to do fancy sewing.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Robert in 1999, three grandchildren Debbie, Frank and Robert, and four great-grandchildren DeLisa, Christopher, and twins Corrie and Carrie.

Surviving are a daughter Bobbie (Frank) Miller of Proctor, four grandchildren Carrie, Bob, Greg and Cheryl, eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-granddaughters.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the Jarvi-Dowd Chapel. Service will be 2 p.m. Friday in Jarvi-Dowd Chapel. Entombment will be in Sunrise Memorial Park. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Ellen Marie Wentzlaff
Services were held earlier this week for Ellen Marie Wentzlaff. She died Sun., July 15, 2001 in her Midway Road home. She was 86.

She was born in Duluth. She was a 1933 graduate of Denfeld High School and attended two years of nursing school. She married William A. Wentzlaff on Nov. 11, 1937, in Dubuque, Iowa. She was a registered nurse at Nopeming Nursing Home, where she retired in 1980 after 22 years of service. She also worked at St. Luke’s Hospital, the former Arlington Nursing Home, Birches Nursing Home and did private in-home nursing.

She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church where she was active in its Martha Circle, altar guild, senior club and also taught Sunday school. She was a member of Pike Lake Senior Citizens and AARP.

Survivors include her daughters Elaine (Tom) Gemuenden of Cable, Wis., and Margaret L. (Art) Abrahamson of Cloquet, sons William J. “Bill” (Beth) of Duluth, Harold L. (Liga) of East Greenville, Penn., and John A. (Gloria) of Hermantown, her brother Kenneth (Bernice) Seehus of Duluth, a daughter-in-law Patricia Wentzlaff of Duluth, 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Burial was in Sunrise Memorial Park Cemetery, Hermantown.

Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Francis E. Brassard
Louis Brassard is mourning the death of his brother Francis E. Brassard of Brownstown, Mich. He died Mon., July 16, 2001. He was 81.

Francis was born in Duluth.

He is also survived by his wife Margaret, two daughters, and four grandchildren.

Paul J. “Dutz” Dutmer
Paula Nephew of Proctor is mourning the death of her father, Paul J. “Dutz” Dutmer. He died unexpectedly Sat., July 14, 2001, at his 101st Ave. W. home. He was 66.

He was born in Duluth and lived most of his life in Morgan Park. He attended St. Margaret Mary’s School and graduated from Morgan Park High School. He served in the Navy from 1953 to 1955. He married Dolores (Dolly) Antonutti in 1956. He was a bricklayer and security guard for U.S. Steel He was then employed for 15 years with Como Tire and Battery as maintenance manager for their Milkhouse properties. He retired in 1996.

Paul was a member of the VFW Post 6320, Gary-New Duluth Community Club, St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church, and played in the city bocce ball leagues for several years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Jeanne and Phyllis, a brother Bill Dutmer, and a grandson Andrew Dzuck.

He is also survived by his wife Dolly of 45 years, five other daughters, a brother, a sister, nine grandchildren, and many nephews and nieces.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. today (Thursday) in St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Duluth VFW Honor Guard.

Nilda Elizabeth (Wedlund) Haynes
Eileen Grimes and Alvin Wedlund, both of Proctor, are mourning the death of their mother and sister, respectively.

Nilda Elizabeth (Wedlund) Haynes, 79, of Duluth died Tues., July 10, 2001, while vacationing in Anchorage, Alaska.

Nilda was born in Mellen, Wis. She graduated from Denfeld High School in 1939. She married Leo J. Haynes June 21, 1941, and they lived in Fond du Lac for more than 50 years and were members of the Fond du Lac Community Church. She worked as a food service worker for many years at the Duluth Athletic Club and retired from the Black Steer.

Nilda is also survived by another daughter, three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, two sisters, and many nieces and nephews.

Burial was in Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Raymond John LeBlanc
Raymond John LeBlanc, who was a boilermaker for the DM&IR, died Fri., July 13, 2001 in a health center in Duluth. He was 83.

The former Duluth resident was born in Duluth. He had also worked at the Civilian Conservation Camps, and later as a welder for International Union of Dredgemen. He was a member of Moose Lodge 1302.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Glen and Herbert, a son Richard, a daughter Mary Kay Bahnsen, and two grandchildren.

Survivors also include a daughter Joan (William) Eng of Duluth, sons James of Duluth, Patrick (Peggy) of Ramsey, Minn., John of Maple Grove, brothers Norbert and Melvin, sisters Mary Jane Knudsen, Mae Downs and Kathleen Stauber, 11 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Private graveside services will be held at a later date in Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Pearl M. Nordin
Pearl M. Nordin, who was Alborn Town Clerk for many years, died Fri., July 6, 2001 in a Duluth hospital. She was 80.

She was born in Rush City. She married Emil A. Nordin. Pearl was a cook at St. Ann’s Home and then at University of Minnesota Duluth, from which she retired. She was a member of Meadowlands Senior Citizens and VFW Women’s Auxiliary 3044.

Pearl is survived by her children Bruce (Joan), Tim (Jeannine) and Terry (Joan), eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, a brother William (Helen) Mell of Virginia, sisters Marian (Edwin) Lahti of Toivola and Marjorie Hartop of Twig.

Private family interment in Spruce Hill, Alborn.

Harvey G. Olson
Services were held last week for Harvey G. Olson. He died Wed., July 25, 2001 in his Arbutus Drive home. He was 79.

He was born in Barron, Wis., and had lived in the Proctor area most of his life. He worked as a heavy-equipment operator for Hedenberg Construction Co. and retired in 1982. He had also worked for Modern Constructors. He joined the Army National Guard in 1939 and served with the Army in Europe and North Africa during World War II.

He was involved in his community, working as a Boy Scout leader and had received the Silver Scout Award. A long-standing and active member of Forbes United Methodist Church, he served on many committees. He sang in the church choir for more than 35 years. He was a member of the West Duluth American Legion Post 71 and the West End VFW Post 137.

Harvey loved to go on fishing trips with his family and friends. He was an excellent bowler, active in league bowling until last year. He also loved golf and spent many days on the Proctor Golf Course.

His parents were August and Ruth Johnson Olson. Also preceding him in death were brothers Alden and LeRoy, and his stepmother Mildred Olson.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years Thelma, children Connie (David) Stanley of Proctor, Terry (Nancy) Olson of Proctor, Steve (Diane) Olson of Sturgeon Lake and Michael Olson of Twig, sisters Marlene Smouse of Scranton, Iowa, Beverly Swanson of Durham, N.C., Nancy Wilson of Marietta, Ga., Julie Malm of Gary, Ind., and Bonnie Olson of Hurley, Wis., brothers George Olson of Proctor, DeWayne Olson of Duluth and David Olson of Hermantown, grandchildren Krista Soderstrom, Rebecca, Matthew, Katherine and Jeffrey Olson, Sarah and Anna Sederski and Will Stanley, and a great-grandson Luke Soderstrom.

Burial was in Augustana Lutheran Church Cemetery. Family prefers memorials directed to Forbes United Methodist Church. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.
