Arthur A. Prom, of Mankato, formerly of New Ulm, died Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, at Immanuel-St. Joseph's Hospital in Mankato.
Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church Marysburg, in rural Madison Lake. Burial will be Thursday in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Mankato Mortuary with a 6 p.m. prayer service and Wednesday at the church, one hour prior to the service.
He is survived by his wife, Laura of Mankato; sons, James of Tempe, Ariz. and David of Good Thunder; daughter, Joyce Adams of Madison Lake; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was born March 9, 1914, to Matthew and Bertha (Manweiler) Prom in New Ulm.

Conrad Doe, 79, of rural Hanska died, Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at the Luther Memorial Home in Madelia.
A private family graveside memorial service will be held at a later date.
He is survived by his daughters, Janelle Frederick of Minnetrista, and Janice Doe of Duluth; sons, Timothy Doe of Hanska, and Bradley Randall of Pittsburgh, Penn.
Conrad was born on Feb. 3, 1923, in Lake Hanska Township, Brown County, to Roland and Inga (Lilleodden) Doe.

Clements Fremont Henle passed away on Dec. 21, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospice, Tucson, Ariz. He was born on Jan. 20, 1916, to Anton and Ida (Nehls) Henle in New Ulm. He attended Holy Trinity High School until age 16, when the family moved to Albert Lea. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Hildegard and Marcella; one, brother Kenneth; uncle Alex Henle; and aunt Gertrude Henle Ries of New Ulm.
Fremont leaves his wife of 61 years, Maxcene (Ewald) and his only son Gary. Also surviving is cousin Helen Ries Schmitt of Culver City, Calif.; and many dear relatives; in-laws; nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held Dec. 30, 2002, in Tucson, Ariz.

Myrtle Melquist, 97, of Gibbon, died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at the St. John's Lutheran Home in Springfield.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, at the Clear Lake Baptist Church in Severance Township, Sibley County, with burial in the Church Cemetery. The Rev. Curtis DePuy and Rev. Roger Melquist will officiate. Visitation will be 4 - 8 p.m. today at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in Gibbon, and will continue for one hour prior to the time of service at church on Wednesday.
Myrtle is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Marlene and Benedict Brunner of New Ulm; a son, Vincent Melquist and his fiancée, Gloria Straguzzi, both of Ponca City, Okla.; grandchildren, Deborah and Daniel Widmer of Springfield, Cynthia and Greg Kuehn of New Ulm, and Pamela Melquist and her fiancé Mark Bradshaw, both of Edmond, Okla.; great-grandchildren, Bob, Kyle, Kevin and Eric; and a sister, Doris Melquist of Gibbon. She was preceded in death by her husband Harold Melquist on Sept. 18, 1981; a great-grandson, Daniel Widmer Jr.; sisters, Hilda Kreft, Phoebe Nordlund and Lillie Dahl; and by brothers, Einer, Lawrence and Melvin Peterson.
Myrtle was born Nov.19, 1905, in Severance Township, Sibley County, to France and Annie (Melander) Peterson. She attended school in Gibbon and graduated from Gibbon High School in 1925. She married Harold Melquist on March 12, 1929, in St. Paul. After marriage they farmed in Severance Township, Sibley County.
Myrtle also worked for Fingerhut in Gaylord for 10 years. They moved to Gibbon in 1969. She was a member of the Clear Lake Baptist Church in rural Gibbon, the Ladies Aid at the church and also the Golden Age Club in Gibbon and Fairfax. She and her husband were volunteer drivers in Sibley County. She enjoyed crocheting and was selected the Hobby Queen of Sibley County in 1989.

Richard Slander, 73, of 113 South Franklin Street in New Ulm, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at his home.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm with burial in the New Ulm City Cemetery in New Ulm. Full military honors will be conducted at the cemetery by the New Ulm Veterans Organizations. Visitation will be 4 - 9 p.m. Thursday and 7:30 - 11 a.m. Friday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm.
Red is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Greg Wales of Brandon; sons and daughter-in-law, Randy "Joe" and Mary Slander and Terry Slander, all of New Ulm; grandchildren, Pamela and Luis Moreno of Brandon, Jeremy Wales of Brandon, Aaron Wales and his fiancée Wendy Torke, both of Alexandria, Daniel and Melissa Wales of Evansville, Joel Wales at home, Micah Wales of Brandon, Moriah Wales at home, Jason and Amber Schaefer of New Ulm, and Adam Slander at home; great-grandchildren, Zachary, Rachael, and Levi Moreno, all of Brandon; a sister and brother-in-law, Gladys and Cranston "Bud" Green of Versallies, Mo.; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Ordelle Frederichs of Houston, Texas, and Sherri and Dick Duerr of Vadnais Heights; brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Howard and Carol Schroeder of New Ulm, and Del Schroeder of Eagan; and by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Marion Slander on May 9, 1995; and a son, Rickey A. Slander on Feb. 23, 1971.
Red was born July 19, 1929, in Springfield, to Leonard and Katherine (Nebraski) Slander. He served in the U.S. Army from April 1947 to August 1953. He was stationed in Fort Benning, Georgia and Fort Rucker, Alabama. He married Marion Schroeder on Aug. 20, 1949 in Nicollet. After his discharge Red enlisted in the Minnesota National Guard serving in New Ulm, at the OMS No. 6 until retiring in 1985. He was a Life Member of the Seifert-Bianchi American Legion Post No. 132 in New Ulm, where he served as Commander from 1981 -1982. He established the Flag etiquette Program at the New Ulm Legion. Red enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping.Red played the drums in numerous old time bands in the New Ulm area and also with the Concord Singers.

Gilmore Thordson, 90, of St. Cloud, formerly of Hanska, died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at the St. Cloud Veteran's Administration Medical Center.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, at Schmucker Funeral Service in Hanska, with Rev. Marcia Hegna officiating. Burial with full military honors conducted by the New Ulm Veterans Organizations and the Hanska American Legion will follow at Lake Hanska Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be one half hour prior to service at the funeral home, Wednesday.
Gilmore Thordson, the son of Paul and Emma (Bjertison) Thordson, was born May 12, 1912, in Lake Hanska Township, Brown County. He grew up on the family farm and was baptized and confirmed at Lake Hanska Lutheran Church. Gim attended rural District No. 67 school and the University of Minnesota School of Agriculture. He entered the U.S. Army in 1941, serving in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. Following his honorable discharge in 1943, he returned to the Hanska area, where he farmed with his father and worked in construction as a truck driver before moving to St. Cloud, where he lived the remainder of his life. He was a member of Lake Hanska Lutheran Church and Oscar Haugen American Legion Post No. 365.
Survivors include his sister-in-law Muriel Thordson of Hanska; brother-in-law Joel Botten, Sr. and his wife Vernelle of Hanska; nieces, Darlene Pizel and her husband Kenneth of Owatonna, and Julie Untiedt and her husband Gary of New Ulm; nephews, Marlan Thordson of Hanska, Joel Botten, Jr. and his wife Maureen of Mankato, and David Botten and his wife Leslie of Hanska; great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to his parents, Gilmore was preceded in death by brothers, Erwin and Donald Thordson; sister, Evelyn, Mrs. Joel Botten, Sr.; and an infant sister, Amy Juella.

Herbert Nagel, 73, of Plymouth, husband of Delores "Dolly" Rothmeier formerly of Sleepy Eye, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at home.
Visitation is 5-8 p.m., Thursday, and continues one hour before the service Friday at Gearty Delmore Funeral Chapel Vicksburg Lane, in Plymouth.
Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Gearty Delmore Funeral Chapel.
He is survived by his wife, Dolly; children, Stephen, Sandra, Michelle, Lizbeth, Bonnie, and several grandchildren.
He was born July 31, 1929. He married Delores "Dolly" Rothmeier in 1953. The lived in Plymouth and recently lived in Pine City.
Herbert will be remembered for his sense of humor and as great chef.

Wanda E. Batzlaff, 74, of Sanborn, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at Valley View Manor in Lamberton
Services are 11 a.m., Friday, at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sanborn with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 5-8 p.m., Thursday, at Strum Funeral Home in Springfield and continues one hour before services Friday at the church.
She is survived by son, Jerry Batzlaff of Springfield; one grandson; sister, Delores Drusch of Morgan.
She was born Nov. 4, 1928, in Eden Township, Brown County, to Julius and Ida (Haase) Grabow.

Orville Wallace Brown, 73, of Sanborn, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at Valley View Manor in Lamberton.
Services are 10 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 23, at Zion Lutheran Church in Sanborn with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m., Thursday, and 7:30-8:30 a.m., Friday, at Sturm Funeral Home in Springfield and continues one hour before the service at the church.
He is survived by sons, Steve Brown of Alexandria, Jeff Brown of New London; daughter, Renee Pidde of Sanborn; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren; brother, Leonard Brown of Sanborn; sisters, Leona Zimmerman of Sanborn, Betty Sutschek of Engleside, Ill. and Sue Yeazle of Monticello.
He was born Feb. 18, 1929, in Stately Township, Brown County, to Herman and Louise (Essig) Brown.

Harold A. Johnson, 89, of Arlington, formerly of Hanska, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003 at the Good Samaritan Center in Winthrop.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 24, 2003 at Zion Lutheran Church in Arlington with burial in Hanska.
Visitation will be Friday at the church, two hours prior to the service.
He was born Sept. 21, 1913 in Hanska to Berger and Hulda Johnson.
The Kolden Funeral Home of Arlington is handling arrangements.

Ada Wendlandt, 81, of Hutchinson, formerly of Winthrop, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003 at Hutchinson Community Hospital.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003 at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Penn Township with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Friday and 8-9 a.m. Saturday at the Hantge Funeral Chapel in Brownton and Saturday at the church, one hour prior to the service.
Arrangements are with Hantge Funeral Chapel in Brownton.

Hubert Ormberg passed away January 18, 2003 at Havasu Regional Medical Center in Lake Havasu City, Arizona.
He was born in his family home in Grove City, MN on March 10, 1924. Hubert was the fourth of 12 children born to Frank and Hazel Ormberg. Hubert was a 1942 graduate of Bottineau, North Dakota High School. He served three years in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged in 1946 after earning four medaIs for distinguished service. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture from North Dakota State University in 1950. Hubert worked as a County Agent for four years in North Dakota before operating a successful dairy equipment business in New Ulm, MN from 1956-1970. He owned and operated a 300-acre farm in Nicollet County. He retired from farming in 1998.
Hubert is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Rose Marie (Vandal) Ormberg, five children and their spouses: Colleen (Dan) Faber, Ron (Roxanne) Ormberg, Ken (Julie) Ornberg, Janice (Bill) Hamilton, Bob (Catie) Ormberg and 15 grandchildren. Other survivors include siblings: Franklin (Mary Lou) Ormberg, Otto Ormberg, Joyce Hell, Betty Ann (Ansel) Strand, Gene (Rosie) Ormberg, Eleanor (Tom) English, Nora (Jerry) Koenig and Carol (Ken) Erickson, Rose Marie's brothers and sisters and many nieces and nephews. Hubert is preceded in death by parents, Frank and Hazel Ormberg, siblings, Walter, Roy and Marguerite Ormberg.
Mass of Christian Burial is 10 a.m. Friday at Nativity of Our Lady Catholic Church (324 S. Prior Ave. at Stanford, St. Paul). Visitation is 7-9 p.m. Thursday at O'Halloran and Murphy Funeral Home (575 S. Snelling Ave., St. Paul) 651-698-0796 and also from 9:30 a.m. until time of services at the church on Friday. Interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Memorials preferred in lieu of flowers.

William 'Bill' Kohout, 76, of Redwood Falls, died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at Redwood Area Hospital, Redwood Falls.
Services are 1 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 23, at St. Catherine's Catholic Church, Redwood Falls, with military honors. Burial will be in St. Catherine's Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m., Wednesday, at Nelson-Martin Funeral Service in Redwood Falls. There will be a Knights of Columbus service at 7:15 p.m. followed by parish prayer.
He is survived by wife, Rose of Redwood Falls; sons, Gene Kohout of Redwood Falls, Mike Kohout of Redwood Falls, John Kohout of Olivia, Larry Kohout of Redwood Falls; daughters, Judy Rien of Annandale, Karen Piekarski of Little Falls, Shirley Kohout of Missoula, Mont., Marsha Fluck of Redwood Falls, Renee Cash of Burlington, Iowa, Joan Ryan of Alexandria, Laurie Scherer of Missoula, Mont.; 21 grandchildren; brothers, Ed Kohout of Olivia, Stanley Kohout of Benson, Milo Kohout of Olivia, and Jim Kohout of Olivia.
He was born May 28, 1926, in Henryville Township, Renville County Minn., to Michael and Anna (Svoboda) Kohout.

Alfred F. Schwarzrock, 84, of Springfield died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003 at St. John Lutheran Home, Springfield.
Services are 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003 at St. John Lutheran Home Chapel in Springfield with burial at 4 p.m. in Fairview Cemetery, Willmar.
Visitation is noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, at St. John Lutheran Home Chapel.
He is survived by a son, Rodney of Willmar; daughter Jean Owens of Greenville, S.C.; 8 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; 2 great, great grandchildren; and a sister, Anita Dorow of Springfield.
He was born May 31, 1918 in Burnstown Township, rural Springfield to Ferdinand and Hattie (Rositzke) Schwarzrock. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Memorials are preferred in his memory to Riverhaven Alzheimers Unit, c/o St. John's Lutheran Home, 201 South County Road 5, Springfield, MN 56087.

Carol G. Amsden, 68, of Canyon Lake, Calif., formerly of Sleepy Eye, died Dec. 11, 2002, at her home in California.
Funeral service was held Dec. 13, 2002, at the Evans-Brown Mortuary Chapel in Sun City, Calif. Visitation was held at the Evans-Brown Mortuary.
She is survived by her husband Michael Amsden of Canyon Lake, Calif.; sons, Bryan Hansen of Anaheim, Calif., Brett Hansen of Fuhlerton, Calif., and Bradley Hansen of Tucson, Ariz.; sister Else Jacobsen of Morgan; and four grandchildren.
Carol G. Anderson was born July 18, 1934, to Carl and Hansine Anderson of Sleepy Eye.
