Myrtle Lynott passed away quietly on her 98th birthday after a very short illness.
Myrtle Delores Tompkins Lynott was born Jan. 31, 1905, in White, S.D., the fourth child of Anna and VC Tompkins.
After attending Sherman Township School District No. 104 through the eighth grade, Myrtle graduated from Brookings High School in 1923. She attended Nettleton Business College in Sioux Falls and taught a year at rural school. Later Myrtle was employed at the Brookings County Court House County Auditor's and the County Treasurer's offices for 13 years.
She married Maurice A. Lynott in 1943, and moved to New Ulm, where Mr. Lynott was principal of the high school. Myrtle worked at the State Bond and Mortgage Company for 20 years, retiring in February of 1966. During those years they enjoyed entertaining teachers and friends in their home on Center Street.
Mrs. Lynott was a member of Orient Chapter No. 60 of Eastern Star and the United Church of Christ, both of New Ulm. She was also a member of the Brookings and New Ulm Country Clubs. Myrtle was also a member of the unique Current News Club since 1947. Besides her interest in current events and activities of her community, Mrs. Lynott was an avid Twins baseball fan. Her other love was collecting antiques.
In the January 1997 issue of Good Housekeeping magazine, Mrs. Lynott was featured with three other ladies as long-time subscribers. Her association with the publication started in 1926.
In August of 2001, Myrtle moved to Harbor City, Calif., to live with Clinton and Ann Tompkins. She enjoyed living with family and taking short trips around the area. Up until a month before her death, she was walking one to three miles each day, reading at least four books a week and keeping her mind sharp with questions from "Wheel of Fortune," "Jeopardy" and "Millionaire," while also studying a Spanish/English dictionary.
She was remarkable in that diseases, accidents and illness eluded her. It was a week-long cold that eventually caused her complications, which led to her four-day stay in the hospital.
Myrtle was preceded in death by her husband Maurice; by her father Verner C. Tompkins; her mother Anna (Miklethun) Tompkins; her sisters, Blanche D. Bensten and Luella B. Fonken; brothers, Earl and Lawrence Tompkins; and baby brother Lyell; niece Dorothy S. Terbell; and nephew Francis L. Brown also passed before Myrtle.
