Mary Schaefer, 80, of rural New Ulm, died Sunday, April 13, 2003, at the Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, April 17, 2003, at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in New Ulm, with Pastor Robert Hines officiating. Burial will be in the New Ulm City Cemetery in New Ulm. Visitation will be 4 - 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 7:30 - 8:30 a.m. on Thursday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm and will continue for one hour prior to the time of service at the church on Thursday.
Mary is survived by her daughters, LuAnn Lindmeyer and her husband Louie, and Debra Schaefer and her husband Eric Wieland, all of New Ulm; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister, Lucy Hippert and her husband Waldo, of Chippewa Falls, Wis.; a brother, Walter Roloff, of New Ulm; a brother-in-law, Jerry Hansen of Hutchinson; and a sister-in-law, Jenny Roloff of Minneapolis. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Harold on Jan. 7, 1992; a sister, Margaret; and a brother, John.
Mary Clara (Klaus) Schaefer, the daughter of Joseph and Katherine (Domeier) Klaus, was born on July 3, 1922, in New Ulm. She was a graduate of the New Ulm Public High School. On Nov. 5, 1942, she was united in marriage to Harold Schaefer in Mankato. After marriage they lived in New Ulm until 1961, when they moved to the Schaefer's home farm in rural New Ulm. Prior to her marriage to Harold she had worked at Pinks Department Store in New Ulm.
Mary was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday School for many years and was a member of the Dorcas Circle and the LWML at church. She was a member of the Gray Ladies at Union Hospital and had done other volunteer work for the Union Hospital in New Ulm, was a 4-H Leader in New Ulm for many years, and had done volunteer work for the American Red Cross. She had been a resident of the Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm since Dec. 6, 2002.

Gene W. Rote, 80, of Lake Florida, near Spicer, formerly of Redwood Falls, died Monday, April 14, 2003, at his home.
Services are 11 a.m. Friday, April 18, at Redwood Valley Funeral Home in Redwood Falls with burial in Redwood Falls Cemetery.
Visitation is Friday one hour prior to the service.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; daughters Claudia of Burnsville and Julie Koester of Oklahoma City, Okla.
He was born Feb. 3, 1923, in Redwood Falls to Carson and Elvina (Nott) Rote.
He joined the U.S. Army in 1943 and served in World War II.

Arle Sander, 91, of Belview, died Wednesday, April 16, 2003, at his home in Swede's Forest Township, Redwood County.
Services are 10:30 a.m., Saturday, April 19, at Rock Dell Lutheran Church, Swede's Forest Township, Redwood County, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 3-6:30 p.m., Friday, with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. at the church and Saturday at the church, one hour prior to the service.
He is survived by a daughter, Arliss Adams of Wabasso.
He was born Oct. 6, 1911, to Edward and Sophia (Samuelson) Sander in Swede's Forest Township, Redwood County.
Kulow Funeral Service of Echo is in charge of arrangements.

Harold E. Wiltscheck, 82, of 820 - 9th North Street in New Ulm died Monday, April 14, 2003 at his home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday, April 21, 2003 at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm with Burial in the New Ulm City Cemetery Soldier's Rest Section with full military honors being conducted by the New Ulm Veterans Organizations.
Visitation will be 4 - 8 p.m. Sunday and 7:30 - 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. The St. Joseph's Catholic Aid Council and the St. John's Court of the Catholic Order of Foresters will pray the rosary at 6 p.m. and there will be a parish prayer service at 7 p.m., both Sunday at the funeral home.
Harold is survived by his wife, Adeline Wiltscheck of New Ulm; daughter, Kathy Jackson of Evergreen, Colorado; daughter and son-in-law, JoAnne and Doug Hacker of Ellendale; sons, Richard Wiltscheck, Gene Wiltscheck and his special friend, Kris Forst all of New Ulm; sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Ann Wiltscheck, Alan "Smiley" and Mary Lou Wiltscheck and Randy and Carol Wiltscheck all of New Ulm; a daughter-in-law, Norma Wiltscheck of Sterling Heights, Michigan; sisters, Florence Wiltscheck of Gibbon and Esther Prahl of Searles; a sister-in-law, Marie Wiltscheck of Gibbon; 21 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Robert Wiltscheck; and by brothers, Stanley, Jerome and Dennis "Sonny" Wiltscheck.
Harold was born July 7, 1920 in Sigel Township, Brown County to Otto and Frances (Berg) Wiltscheck. He attended District #50 country school and worked on the family farm until he entered the United States Army in 1942. He was assigned to an anti-aircraft unit at Camp Haan, California, operating the first radar unit of WWII. In 1945 he was assigned to the 605th Combat Engineers as part of the liberation of France. He married Adeline E. Holm on March 13, 1943 in New Ulm. Following his service in the armed forces he began farming in Sigel Township, Brown County. In 1953 he was awarded the first Oustanding Young Farmer Award in Brown County. He retired from farming in 1980 and moved to New Ulm. He was a member of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm, Catholic Order of Foresters, St. Joseph's Catholic Aid Council, and the Seifert-Bianchi American Legion Post #132 in New Ulm.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the donors choice.

Gary Lee Rundle, 50, of Tracy, died Tuesday, April 15, 2003, in Rapid City, S.D.
Funeral service will be Monday at 2 p.m. at the Hartquist Funeral Chapel, Pipestone, MN. Interment will be in Woodstock Cemetery, Woodstock, MN.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
He is survived by his mother, Lucille Rundle Edwards of New Ulm, and preceded by his stepfather, the late Grant Edwards.

Frank Plaetz, 91, of Wabasso, formerly of Lucan, died Friday, April 18, 2003 at the Redwood Falls Hospital.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 23, 2003 at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Lucan with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Tuesday with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the church and Wednesday at the church, one hour prior to the service.
Redwood Valley Funeral Home of Redwood Falls is in charge of arrangements.

Raymond A. 'Ray' Kuester, 91, of 715 South German Street in New Ulm and formerly of rural Courtland died Wedneday, April 16, 2003 at the New Ulm Medical Center in New Ulm.
Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Monday at the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm with burial in the St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in New Ulm.
Visitation will be Sunday from 4 - 8 PM at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm and
will continue for one hour prior to the time of service at church on Monday.
Raymond is survived by his daughters and son-in-law, Liz Kuester of Scottsdale, Arizona and Margie and Brian Forst of St. George; sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Darlene Kuester of New Ulm and John and Kathy Kuester of Courtland; seven grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alvera on July 1, 1988; sisters, Rosella, Vernita and Elda; a brother, Willard Kuester; and by many other relatives.
Raymond was born April 15, 1912 in New Ulm to Albert and Alvina (Becker) Kuester. He married Alvera Brust on November 26, 1936 at the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm. He had farmed on the family homestead in Courtland Township, Nicollet County since 1928. He retired in his late 70's and moved to New Ulm. He had been a resident of Ridgeway on German in New Ulm since 2001 where he enjoyed many activities. He liked to dance and sing when he could. He enjoyed his grandchildren, his family and playing sheephead. He was a member of the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm.

Laverne Martin, 81, of 731 Allen Avenue in Gibbon died Wednesday, April 16, 2003 at the Immanuel - St. Joseph's Hospital in Mankato.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday, April 21, 2003 at the August-ana Lutheran Church in Gibbon with burial in the church cemetery. Full military honors will be conducted at the cemetery by the New Ulm Veterans Organizations.
Visitation will be 4 - 8 p.m. Sunday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in Gibbon and will continue for one hour prior to the time of service at the church on Monday.
Laverne is survived by his wife, LaVerna Martin of Gibbon; daughter, Susan Martin of New Ulm; sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Linda Martin, Greg Martin all of Gibbon, Scott and Julie Martin of Apple Valley; grandsons, Ross Martin and his fiancée, Valerie Hoffmann, Troy Martin and his wife, Amy, Jay Martin, Lucas Martin; great grandchildren, Janaye Martin, Evan Martin, and Logan Martin. He was preceded in death by his parents.
He was born on March 11, 1922 in Franklin to William and Esther (Nelson) Martin and they moved to Gibbon when he was 2 years old. He served in WWII with the 10th Armored Division and took part in the Battle of the Buldge and he was wounded twice and received the Purple Heart. On May 7, 1947 he married Laverna Lewin at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Stewart.
He had worked in the Grocery business and then worked for 3M in New Ulm for twenty years. He enjoyed playing his button box accordian and the harmonica, camping, traveling and being with his family. He was a member of the D.A.V. in New Ulm and was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church in Gibbon.

Elvira 'Vera' Gag, 88, formerly of New Ulm, died Monday, April 14, 2003, at the Sleepy Eye Care Center in Sleepy Eye.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 22, 2003, at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm, with burial in the Catholic Cemetery in New Ulm. Visitation will be 5 - 7 p.m. Monday and from 7:30 - 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. The Christian Mothers Society will pray the rosary at 4 p.m. Monday at the Cathedral. The St. Anne's Court will pray the rosary at 5:30 p.m., and a parish prayer service will be at 6:30 p.m., both Monday evening at the funeral home.
Vera is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, Donna and Marvin Roiger of Springfield, and Beverly Schaefer of Pacheco, Calif.; son Lloyd Gag of San Francisco, Calif.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Albert Gag on May 15, 1999; three grandchildren; a brother, John "Hans" Richter, and a brother in infancy.
She was born on June 4, 1914, in New Ulm, to John and Anna (Held) Richter. She married Albert Gag on June 21, 1932, at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in New Ulm. She had worked at Woolworth's in New Ulm, and later was a cook at Holy Trinity Catholic School for 25 years. She was a member of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm, and was a member of the funeral choir at church, a member of the Christian Mothers Society, and a member of the St. Anne's Court No. 389, N.C.S.F.

DeLoris Schreyer, 86, of 1205 N. Broadway, New Ulm, died Friday evening, April 18, 2003, at the New Ulm Medical Center.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 22, 2003, at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm, with Rev. Donald Sutton officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 - 8 p.m. Monday at Schmucker Funeral Service in New Ulm, and one hour prior to service at the church.
DeLoris Anderson, the daughter of Lester and Myrtle (Wolfe) Anderson, was born Feb. 28, 1917, in Garrison, Iowa. As a infant, she moved with her family to Sleepy Eye, where she attended public school and was active in 4H for many years. DeLoris married Lester Schreyer on Sept. 10, 1940, at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm. They lived their entire married life together in New Ulm. Following her husband's death Feb. 10, 1987, DeLoris continued to make her home in New Ulm. She had been an active member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm since her marriage. Working with the quilters group of the church has been her pride and joy for many years. She was a lifelong cat lover.
Survivors include sisters-in-law, Orlean Anderson of Sleepy Eye, and Luverna Juni of New Ulm; brothers-in-law, Gilbert Schreyer and his wife Peggy of New Ulm, and Carl Larson of Gaylord; godson, Bill Conrad of Minneapolis; two special young ladies, Jodi and Becky Schmidt of New Ulm; nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Lloyd, Verle J. and Lowell (Bud) Anderson.

Anna Esther Stebbins, age 91, of Waconia, MN, formerly of North Mankato, MN died Friday, April 18, 2003 at Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22 at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in North Mankato.
Visitation begins at 12 noon on Tuesday at the church. Interment will be at Woodland Hills Memorial Park. Woodland Hills Funeral Home in Mankato is handling arrangements.
Mrs. Stebbins was born on April 29, 1911 to John and Anna (Ahlensdorf) Micke in Granby Township, Nicollet County, MN. At the age of two she came to live with Fredricka Strusz. She was a graduate of Mankato High School and attended Mankato Commercial College. She was employed by Bretts and Gamble Skogmo-Tempo for many years. She was united in marriage to Kenneth Stebbins on October 13, 1942 in Charles City, Iowa. Anna was a lifetime member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. She taught Sunday school and was secretary and treasurer for many years. She also sang in the choir. She belonged to Mary-Ruth Circle and Ladies Aid.
She is survived by two sons and their wives, Gary and Jeanne of Denver, Colorado, Kenneth and Linda of Bloomington, MN; one daughter, Carol Jannusch and her husband Edward of Chanhassen; four grandchildren, Linsay Felchle and her husband Christopher, Amber Jannusch, Sara Calabrese and her husband Nick, and Gary K. Stebbins; one sister, Marie Freyholtz of the Good Samaritan Center in Arlington, MN; many nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one sister and five brothers.

Alern Bendix, Sr., 86, of rural Courtland, died Saturday, April 19, 2003 at the Winthrop Good Samaritan Center in Winthrop.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 23, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Courtland with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Tuesday and 7:30 until 8:30 a.m., Wednesday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm and will continue on Wednesday for one hour prior to the time of service at the church.
Alern is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Gladys and Gail Mayer of New Ulm; Evie and Curt Sorensen of Paynesville, sons and daughters-in-law, Alern "Butch" Jr. and Jean Bendix of New Ulm, Berton and Sherry Bendix of Courtland; nine grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Jolene and Herb Laabs of New Ulm; and sisters-in-law Agatha Bendix of Belle Plaine and Verona Bode of New Ulm.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Bendix in 1997, parents, Herman and Elsa Bendix, mother-in-law and father-in-law, Herman and Elsie Bode; sisters and brothers-in-law, Verneeda and Fred Bruns and Delrose and Edmond Bode; a brother, Herman Bendix; brothers-in-law, Edwin Bode and Elmer Bode; and sisters-in-law, Valeria Bode and Agnes Bode.
Alern Bendix, the son of Herman and Elsa (Seemann) Bendix was born on December 20, 1916, in Courtland Township, Nicollet County. He married Edna Bode on October 11, 1940, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Courtland. After marriage they farmed in Courtland Township and retired in 1978 but continued to live on the farm. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Courtland.

Eugenia A. Berdan, 87, of Sleepy Eye, died Sunday, April 20, 2003, at Divine Providence Community Home, Sleepy Eye.
Services are 10 a.m., Wednesday, April 23, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 6-8 p.m., Tuesday at Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye with a parish prayer service at 7 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home.
She is survived by her children, Barbara Rasmussen of Durango, Colo., Frederick Berdan of Austin, Mark Berdan of New Ulm, Colette Bednarczyk of Edina and Jane Owen of Arlington, Texas; nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
She was born Feb. 6, 1916 in Sigel Township, Brown County, to Clara Ubl.

Howard L. Pelz, 83, of Redwood Falls, died Sunday, April 20, 2003, at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne
Services are 10:30 a.m., Thursday, April 24, at the Delhi Presbyterian Church with burial in the Belview Cemetery.
Visitation is 5-8 p.m., Wednesday, at Redwood Valley Funeral Home; and one hour before the services at the church.
He is survived by his wife, Marcella; children, Cheryl Beavers of Belview, Mike Pelz of Wayzata, Mark Pelz of Cheyenne, Wyo., Greg Pelz of St. Peter, Jeff Pelz of Oxford, England; 14 grandchidlren; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Lois Roschert of Arden Hills, Dorothy Uhlenkmap of Redwood Falls; Phyllis Ellis of Superior, Wis., and Ruth Kyle of Mount Herman, Calif.
He was born June 13, 1919, in Blairsburg, Iowa to Ben and Evelyn (Loban) Pelz.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Frank X. Plaetz, 91, of Wabasso, formerly of Lucan, died Friday, April, 18, 2003, at the Redwood Area Hospital.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 23, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Lucan with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m., Tuesday at the church with a prayer service at 7 p.m. and Wednesday at the church, one hour prior to the service.
The Redwood Valley Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
He is survived by sons, Ronald and Robert, both of Lucan; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brothers, Carl of Calif., Lawrence of Lucan and Louis of Wabasso; sisters, Caroline Pelzel of Wabasso, Hannah Storm of Winona, Margaret Brown of New Ulm and Delores Frericks of Wanda.
He was born Sept. 3, 1911, to Carl and Caroline (Vogl) Plaetz on the family farm near Lucan.
