Elizabeth 'Betty' LaVerne Friedrich, 72, of Springfield, died Monday, April 21, 2003, at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 24, at Zion Lutheran Church in Springfield, with Pastor David Preuss officiating.
Visitation will be 2-3 p.m., Wednesday, at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield, 4 - 8 p.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church in Springfield, and will continue one hour prior to service at the church on Thursday.
Betty was born July 23, 1930, in Springfield, to Charles and Elizabeth (Luckhardt) Schmidt. She graduated from the Springfield High School. On Aug. 26, 1948, she married Donald Friedrich at Zion Lutheran Church in Springfield. Following marriage, Betty and Don remained in Springfield. Betty enjoyed gardening and was awarded the "Yard of the Month." She also enjoyed bowling, golfing, cleaning, decorating for the holidays, canning, cooking and spending time with her family -- especially her grandchildren. Betty was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid Association, Ladies Bowling Association (WIBC) and a former member of the Springfield Golf Club.
She is survived by her husband Don Friedrich of Springfield; a son, Ron and wife Ellen Friedrich of New Ulm; a daughter, LeeAnn and husband Cleve Simonson of Springfield; grandchildren, Christian Simonson of Mankato, Nicole Simonson of St. Peter, and Sean Simonson of Northfield; a great-granddaughter, Karlie Ann Janzen of St. Peter; a sister, Dorothy and husband Clarence Fixen of Seaforth; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Donald Schmidt.
Arrangements were handled by Sturm Funeral Home, Springfield.

Tina Menken, 92, of Litchfield, formerly of Forest City, passed away Saturday, April 19, 2003, at her residence in Litchfield.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, April 24, 2003, at the St. Matthews United Church of Christ in Forest City, with Pastor Bridget Haefner officiating. Visitation will be held 5 - 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Johnson Hagglund Funeral Home in Litchfield, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church. Interment will be at Ripley Cemetery in Litchfield.
She is survived by her daughter, Lorraine (Harris) Franz of New Ulm.

Dolores 'Dottie' M. Niemann, 88, of Springfield, died Tuesday, April 22, 2003, at Valley View Manor in Lamberton.
Services are 10:30 a.m., Friday, at Zion Lutheran Church in Springfield with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 5-8 p.m., Thursday, and 7:30-8:30 a.m., Friday at Sturm Funeral Home in Springfield; and one hour before the service at the church.
She is survived by son David Niemann of Springfield; three grandchildren; sister Trudy Driscoll of Redwood Falls; and brother Marvin Meyer of Arlington, Texas.
She was born May 6, 1914, in Burnstown Township, to William and Ida (Wendt) Meyer.

Lester Borning, 79, of Redwood Falls, died Wednesday, April 23, 2003, at Methodist Hospital, of non-hodgkin lymphoma.
Services are 2 p.m., Saturday, at St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church in Redwood Falls with burial in the Redwood Falls Cemetery.
Visitation is 4-7 p.m., today, at Nelson-Martin Funeral Service in Redwood Falls and continues one hour before the service at the church.
He is survived by wife Anna of Redwood Falls; sons, Jerry of Rosemount, David and Burnsville; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Caroline Feder of Carlsbad, Calif., Grace Sather of New Ulm; brother, Bernard of Moscow, Idaho, and Glenn of Echo.
He was born Dec. 20, 1923, in rural Echo, to Bernard and Bertha (Preuss ) Borning.
He served in the Army during World War II.

Kenneth E. Brand - A memorial service for Kenneth E. Brand, 70, of Glenview, IL, will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm.
Brand, a native of New Ulm, died Dec. 21, 2003.

Mary O'Malley,, 67, formerly of New Ulm, died Wednesday, April 16, 2003, at the Lakeview Hospice Home in San Diego, Calif., of cancer.
A memorial service was held Saturday, April 19, at the Clairemont Mortuary in San Diego.
She is survived by brothers, Cletus (Red) and John; daughters, Bonnie Lofgren of Ocala, Fla., and Vicki Zimlich, of Dublin, Ohio; and three grandchildren.
She was born August 17, 1935.

Verna Trebesch, 95, of Sleepy Eye, died Wednesday, April 23, 2003, at the Sleepy Eve Care Center.
Services are 11 a.m., Saturday, April 26, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye with burial in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye.
Visitation is 6-8 p.m., Friday, at Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye and continues one hour before the service at the church.
Survivors include her daughter Eunice Windschitl of Sleepy Eye; son Patrick and wife Nancy Trebesch of Aubrey, Texas; daughter-in-law Bernus Trebesch of Sleepy Eye, seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and sister Lillian Schneider of Sleepy Eye.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Arthur; son Myron on September 28, 2001; sisters, Luella Krebs and Laura Schmitz; brothers, Wilbert and Alvin Meinert; son-in-law, Lenus Windschitl; and brother-in-law, Rueben Schneider.
Verna was born on March 29, 1908, in Leavenworth Township, Brown County, Minn., the daughter of Henry and Pauline (Guhlke) Meinert. She grew up and attended country school in Leavenworth Township. On April 23, 1930, Verna married Arthur Trebesch at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Springfield. The couple made their home in Leavenworth Township where they lived and farmed for many years. In 1972 they retired from farming and moved to Sleepy Eye and Arthur preceded Verna in death in 1973. Verna worked in the kitchen at Sleepy Eye Public School for ten years. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Sarah Circle.

Agner Winseth, 89, of Lamberton, died Wednesday, April 23, 2003, at Valley View Manor in Lamberton.
Services are 11 a.m., Monday, April 28, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Lamberton.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m., Sunday, at the church, and continues one hour before the service.
Sturm Funeral Home of Lamberton handled arrangements.
He is survived by wife Aletha of Lamberton; son, Seven of Windom; daughters, Robin Paper of Sanborn, Bonnie Peterson of LIttleton, Mass., and three grandsons.
He was born April 18, 1914, in Minneapolis, to Christ and Mina (Foss) Winsat.

Selma B. Olson, 101, of New Ulm died Tuesday, April 22, 2003 at the Winthrop Good Samaritan Center in Winthrop.
Funeral service will be 11 AM Tuesday, April 29, 2003 at the United Church of Christ in New Ulm with burial in the New Ulm City Cemetery. Visitation will be 10 - 11 AM Tuesday at the United Church of Christ in New Ulm.
The Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm is in charge of the arrangements.
Selma is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Arlawaine and Frank LaFontain of Hanna, Wyoming; four granddaughters; eight great grandchildren; a sister, Mabel Nelson of Lafayette; a brother and sister-in-law, Clarence and Pauline Kuehn of Deming, New Mexico. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, John Peterson on November 12, 1937; second husband, George Olson on July 1, 1978; sisters, Lydia Hedrich, Esther Hohnstadt, Mamie Coen, Alice McCumber; and by brothers, Herbert and Benjamin Kuehn.
Selma was born April 7, 1902 in Vesta to Albert E. and Sophia (Hohnstadt) Kuehn. She married John Peterson on May 21, 1924 and then George L. Olson on October 8, 1943. She worked at the Klossner General Store in Klossner, the Highland Manor Nursing Home in New Ulm and then for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad for 14 years until she retired. She was a member of the United Church of Christ in New Ulm, volunteer for meals on wheels, the Sioux Valley Hospital Auxiliary, and the ladies aid at church. She had resided at the Sunset Apartments in New Ulm for 10 years, then moved to assisted Living in Lafayette in 1999. On December 4, 2002 she became a resident of the Winthrop Good Samaritan Center in Winthrop.

Rosemary Groebner, 79, of Virginia, died Wednesday, April 23, 2003, at the Virginia Regional Medical Center.
Mass of Christian burial was11 a.m. Saturday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Virginia, with the Rev. Fr. John O'Donnell as celebrant. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Virginia. Arrangements were by the Landmark Funeral home of Virginia.
She was born on April 20, 1924, in New Ulm, to Otto and Marie (Bongaarts) Kunz and grew up there. She was a graduate of the Holy Trinity High School. Rosemary married Robert H. Groebner in May 1946. They had lived in Marshall and Fairmont, before moving to Virginia in 1969.
Rosemary worked for the Mesabi Daily News for 20 years, retiring in 1995. She was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church of Virginia; American Legion Post 239 Women's Auxiliary and was treasurer of the Rouchleau Club of Virginia.
Survivors include 6 children. Mary (Bob) Myhr of Roswell, Ga., Chris (Greg Kolari) Groebner of cable. Wis.; John (Pam) Groebner of Maple Grove; Patty Groebner of Lake Forest, Calif., Kathy (Bob) Judnick of Virginia, Richard (Andrea) Groebner of Champlin; 9 grandchildren, Christina, Becky, John Robert, Scot, Sarah, Andrew, Ally, Cole and Louie; 1 sister, Katie Schnobrich of Sauk Rapids; 1 brother, Charlie (Rosie) Kunz of New Ulm, MN; 1 sister-in-law, Lois Fiest of Niceville, Fla.; godson, Mike Kunz of Minneapolis and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Robert and 1 brother, Laverne Kunz.

Walter R. Huebner, 87, of the Prairie View Apartments in St. James died Friday, April 25, 2003, at the St. James Hospital in St. James.
Services will be 1 p.m. Monday, April 28, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in St. James, with burial in the Maple Plain Cemetery in Maple Plain. The Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm is in charge of the arrangements.
Walter is survived by his sisters, Adeline Hedberg of St. James and Thelma Gunderson of Spring Park.
Walter was born March 7, 1916 in Portland, Ore., to Jonathan and Alfina (Janke) Huebner. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1941 to 1947.

Delores Baumgardt, 76, of Buffalo Lake, died Thursday, April 24, 2003, at the St. Cloud Hospital.
Services are 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 30, at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Buffalo Lake.
Visitation is 508 p.m., Tuesday at the church and continues one hour before the service.
Arrangements are handled by Hughes Funeral Home.
She is survived by husband Dale of Buffalo Lake; children, Sharon Zenk of Foley, Larry Baumgardt of Sleepy Eye, Steve Baumgardt of Avondale, Ariz., Sheila Bezdeka of Stillwater and LuAnne Reeck of Paynesville; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren; sister, Ruth Duenow and brother Herbert Zaske.
She was born Oct. 18, 1926, to August and Magaretha (Weigel) Zaske, in Sumter Township, McCleod County.

Elnor 'Babe' (Mrs. Roland 'Butch') Engel, 77, of Nicollet, died Sunday, April 27, 2003 at the Immanuel St. Joseph Hospital in Mankato.
The funeral service will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m at the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in North Mankato with Pastor Gary Wong officiating. Interment will be at the Woodland Hills Mausoleum in Mankato.
Visitation will be 4 - 8 p.m Tuesday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in Nicollet and will continue on Wednesday for one hour prior to the time of service at the church.
Babe is survived by her husband, Roland "Butch" Engel, of Nicollet; sons and daughters-in-law, Steven and Susan Engel of Bemidji, Lynn and Phyllis Engel of Junction City, Oregon, Wayne and Karen Engel of Kennewick, Washington, and Paul and Marie Engel of North Mankato; a son-in-law, Michael Seely and his wife, Nancy, of Central Point, Oregon, twelve grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law, Anna Precht of St. Peter, Lorna and Jess Hanson of Mankato, Cel Peterson of Mankato, Joyce and Bruce Long of Waterville, Georgia "Pal" and Fritz Dauer of New Hope; a brother and sister-in-law, Sam and Karla Juberien of Mesa, Arizona, sisters-in-law, Gladys Erickson and her husband, Jim, of St. Peter and Alice Juberien of Mankato; and a brother-in-law Eldy Allen of LaPine, Oregon.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Christine Seely, in 1994, a stillborn son in 1948, sisters, Ruth Phillips and Delores Allen; and brothers, Wallace "Sonny" Juberien and Marvin "Jim" Juberien.
Elnor June Engel, the daughter of Henry and Emma (Meyer) Juberien was born on November 26, 1925, in Belgrade Township, Nicollet County. She graduated from Nicollet High School in 1943. On December 27, 1944 she was united in marriage with Roland "Butch" Engel in Mankato. Butch and Babe farmed in Nicollet Township, Nicollet County from 1946 to 1987 when they retired and moved to Nicollet. Babe was a lifelong member of the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mankato where she taught Vacation Bible School for many years. She was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society for forty-three years. She was a charter member of the Nicollet American Legion Auxiliary and a member for over fifty years. She was a member of the Hiawatha Chapter of the American EX-POWs. She was an officer and board member of the Home Delivered Meals in Nicollet since it started. She was a board member of the Nicollet PTA and had been a census taker and market researcher for many years.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the American Cancer Society.

Fay (Godfrey) Abel died February 21, 2003 at the Henderson Hospital in Henderson, Nev.
Memorial service for Fay Beverly Abel of New Ulm will be at 2 p.m. Sunday May 4, 2003 at Christ The King Lutheran Church New Ulm.
She is survived by her husband Irvin C. Abel of New Ulm, one sister, Carol and husband Warren Christiansen and brother Gayle Godfrey all of Las Vegas, Nev.; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Walter Abel and wife Carolyn, Arnold Abel and wife Rita, Mrs. William ( Evelyn) Koons, Edwin Abel and wife Marlene and Howard Abel and wife Eileen all of Welcome, MN, Norman Abel and wife Sue of Fairmont, MN. and Joan and husband John Riegel of Elk Grove Ill.; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clayton and Gladys (Peterson) Godfrey.
Fay Godfrey was born December 24, 1932 in Trimont, MN. She was a 1951 graduate of East Chain High School. On August 3, 1951 she was united in marriage to Irvin C. Abel. They lived in Fairmont from 1951 to 1957 when. they purchased A.B. Meerfild Motor Company which they named Abel Electric Motor Shop. Fay was bookkeeper and helper in the shop for 36 years. She was a member of Christ The King Lutheran Church. Upon retirement they have spent the winters in Las Vegas for the past 14 years. She loved hunting, fishing, motorcycling and snowmobiling.

Gertie Laffrenzen, 83, of Worthington, died Saturday, April 26, 2003, at the Worthington Regional Hospital.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 30, at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Worthington, with interment in Worthington Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington.
She is survived by her husband, Henning; children, James Laffrenzen of Worthington, Lois Rust of Deerwood, and Duane Laffrenzen of New Ulm; six grandchildren; sisters, Lillie Obermoller, Edith Vogt, Emma Feit, all of Worthington, Hazel Martinson and Clara Martinson of Brewster, and Minnie Nelson of Sioux Falls, S.D., and a brother, Edward Sachen of Rushmore.
She was born March 13, 1920, near Rushmore to Edward and Barbara (Paul) Sachen.

Leonard M. Becker, 81, of Olivia, died Tuesday, April 29, 2003, at his home.
Services are 11 a.m., Friday, May 2, 2003, at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Olivia with burial in the Olivia Cemetery with military rites by the Olivia VFW and American Legion.
Visitation is 5-8 p.m., Thursday at Dirks-Blem Funeral Home in Olivia and one hour before the service Friday at the church.
Among the survivors are his wife and four children including daughter Linda and husband Peter Neigebauer of Courtland.

Catherine Blomeke, 97, of Morgan, died Monday, April 28, 2003, at Gil-More Manor in Morgan.
Services are 3 p.m., Thursday, May 1, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Morgan with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 2-3 p.m., Thursday, at the church.
Arrangements are handled by Nelson-Martin Funeral Service of Redwood Falls.
She is survived by daughter Phyllis Johnson of St. Paul; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was born July 16, 2905, in Morgan, to Martin and Katrina (Prokosch) Janotta.
