Robert Richard Rutka
Robert Richard Rutka, who was born in Proctor and was a lifelong resident, died Thurs., Sept. 6, 2001 in Viewcrest Nursing Home. He was 72.

The Village Drive resident was formerly employed as a machinist with the DM&IR, retiring in 1989. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran. He was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church in Proctor and Corvair Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents Felix and Mary Jurewicz Rutka, his first wife Louise Berg Rutka, and a grandson Richard.

Robert is survived by his wife Jeanne of Proctor, a daughter Juliann (Ted) Micken, sons Tom and Dan (Tammy), all of Duluth, a grandson Robby, four stepchildren, eight stepgrandchildren, and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Duluth VFW Combined Honor Guard.

Bernard “Bernie” Joseph Kelly
Former Pike Lake resident Bernard “Bernie” Joseph Kelly died Fri., Aug. 24, 2001 in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. He was 61.

Born April 1, 1940, he attended school in Glace Bay. He joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1957, transferring to the States in 1967. Upon leaving the forces, he worked construction until falling ill in 1983.

Bernie is survived by his former wife Dani Kelly of Duluth, sons Robert (Wendy) of Clinton Township, Mich. and David (Laurie) of North Branch, Minn., a daughter Karen (Tom) Bergh of Hermantown, brothers Cassimer, Ronald (Flo), Joseph (Brenda), Andrew (ReJeanne), Terrence (Margie) and James (Peggy), sisters Veronica (Laci) Szabo, Elaine (Doug French) Terrion, Carol Ann (Steve) Drysdale, and Katheline (Ralph) Boyd, all of Canada, four grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Lawrence “Larry” Jobin
Lawrence “Larry” Jobin of Proctor died Tues., Sept. 18. He was 59.

He was born March 6, 1942 to Raymond and Helen (Kirby) Jobin. He worked for Western Weighing & Inspection Bureau from 1961 to 1991, and for Country Lanes North.

He was an avid bowler and member of ABC, West Duluth Moose #1478 and Proctor Moose Lodge #1302. He enjoyed playing golf and being with his sons.

He was preceded in death by his parents Raymond and Helen Jobin.

He is survived by sons, Marty and Michael, sisters, Roberta (Coutour) Jobin and Patricia “Patty” (Meier) Jobin and four nieces.

Pallbearers selected by Jobin include Denny Jollymore, Shannon Priola, Richard Shovein, Roy Hamlin, Larry Kubiak and Brad Tafs.

Funeral services were pending at the time of publication.

Rev. Clifford Amil Dirksen
The Rev. Clifford Amil Dirksen, who served as pastor of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in the mid 1980’s, died Sun. Sept. 9, 2001 as a result of an accident on a county road near Manchester, S.D. He was 76.

He was born near Bancroft, where he was baptized, confirmed and ordained in St. John’s Lutheran Church.

He attended elementary school in Clark and Kingsbury County, and later Bancroft High School, graduating in 1943. He attended Wartburg College and Seminary in Iowa, graduating in 1948 with a B.A., and in 1952 with a master’s in divinity degree.

He married Doris Diedrich in 1950 at Northwood, Iowa. He served at many parishes besides Proctor including in Sioux Falls, S.D., Wausau, Wis., Warner, S.D., and Chokio, Minneapolis, Silver Bay and Duluth in Minnesota. He was also an interim pastor in more than 18 parishes in Minnesota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

He is survived by his wife Doris of Bancroft, a daughter Beverly (Stuart) Hendershot of Stevens Point, Wis., a son Alan (Kris) Dirksen of Duluth, a daughter Eunice (Erland) Weerts of Bancroft, a brother Eldon Dirksen of Tucson, Ariz., sisters Deora Gehrke of rural Willow Lake and Rosella Beninga of Grundy Center, Iowa, six grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

Burial was in LeSueur Cemetery, rural Bancroft.

Helen B. Wizner
Gertrude Pelletier of Proctor is mourning the death of her mother Helen B. Wizner. She died Wed., Sept. 26, 2001 in a Duluth hospital. She was 100.

The former W. 6th St., Duluth resident was born in Superior. She had lived in Stevens Point, Wis., before moving to Duluth, where she lived most of her life.

Helen was a member of St. James Catholic Church, St. Margaret’s Guild, Catholic Order of Foresters, Daughters of Isabella, the VFW Auxiliary Post 6320, where she served as a president, and she was a member of the Past President’s Club.

Helen is also survived by her son, a sister, a daughter-in-law, a sister- in-law, 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandchild, and many nieces and nephews.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery, Duluth.

Robert “Boxing Bob” Roy Rooney
Victoria “Vikki” Rooney of Saginaw is mourning the death of her father Robert “Boxing Bob” Roy Rooney. He died Tues., Sept. 25 in Duluth. He was 73.

The Hermantown resident was born in Two Harbors and grew up in Duluth and attended Central High School. Bob was a World War II Army veteran serving in the European Theater. He was a member of the American Legion Post 71.

Bob started his boxing career with the Golden Gloves. He continued his boxing career while serving in the Army in Germany. After returning from Germany, he was on a pro ticket, boxing in the northern parts of the United States. In Duluth, he was a lifeguard at Park Point. He had worked for the DM&IR Railway, Hallett Dock and as a longshoreman in Duluth until he retired.

He is also survived by a brother, an uncle, many nieces and nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews, and his special friends, Peggy Jugasek, Armond Hauge and Richard Jugasek.

Marie Catherine Schwankl Baril
Marie Catherine Schwankl Baril, who was raised in Proctor, died Thurs., Sept. 27, 2001 in her Lewiston, Idaho home. She was 84.

She was born in Richmond, Minn., one of ten children of Edward and Clara Kingen Schwankl. She attended school at St. Peter and Paul Catholic School, and Cold Springs High School, Minn.

She was married to Everett “Bud” M. Davis, then later to Richard L. Baril.

During the 60’s and 70’s she was employed by Duluth Avionics, Litton Industries and Frank’s IGA in Duluth until 1986 when she and Dick retired in Lewiston.

She enjoyed embroidery, roller skating and shopping. Marie is to be admired for her quiet struggle with emphysema.

Marie is survived by her husband Richard, daughters Beverly Davis (Jerry) Cran of Duluth, Dianne Davis Dmohowski of Akron, Ohio, Sandy Davis (Russell) Hoglund of Esko, Cindy Davis (Jim) Senske of Grand Forks, ND, and Brenda Baril Wahner of Lewiston, brothers Roman (Heberly) Schwankl of Deerwood, Edward (Nellie) Schwankl of Mora, Severin Schwankl of St. Cloud, sister Agnes (Bob) Egerman of St. Cloud, 12 grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren.

There will be a private family gathering in Lewiston, a memorial mass in Richmond, with military honors at Fort Snelling Cemetery at a later date.

Katherine Ann (Schultz) Dalton
Katherine Ann (Schultz) Dalton, who came to Saginaw in 1929 and graduated from Proctor High School in 1931, died Sun., Oct. 7, 2001 in a Duluth hospital. She was 88.

The Cloquet resident was born in Beloit, Wis. On Feb. 12, 1934, Katherine married Albert Dalton in Duluth. She was a volunteer with CHUM working in their tele-care program. She was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Cloquet and a former member of St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Saginaw.

She is survived by a daughter Kathleen (Vern) Heikes of Hermantown, a son James (Kay) Dalton of Barnum, her son-in-law John Brigan, Sr. of Saginaw, a sister Alice Kurtovich of Duluth, grandchildren Verna (Scott) Anderson of Duluth, Alan (Dawna) Heikes and Chris (Nancy Anderson) Heikes, both of Esko, John Brigan of Wrenshall, Tim (Bonnie) Brigan and Bill Brigan, both of Saginaw, Rhonda (Mike) Clark of Carlton, Angela (Stan) Sayler of Hermantown, Jay Dalton of Barnum and Brenda (Cory) Smith of Phoenix, great-grandchildren Matthew, Curtis and Erik Anderson, Roger and Brittany Brigan, Alexandra, Ashley, Autumn, Alyssa and Andrea Clark, Kayla, Tyler, Jesse and Travis Sayler, and Tayler and Kiersten Smith, and her special niece Ethel Gaus of Cloquet.

Burial was yesterday, Thurs., in New Calvary Cemetery, Cloquet.

Peter “Kip” Majeski
Jennifer Palusky of Saginaw is mourning the death of her father Peter “Kip” Majeski. He died Thurs., Oct. 4, 2001 in a Duluth hospital. He was 52.

The Knife River resident was born in Superior, where he grew up and attended schools. He worked at National Foods, Super One Foods in Superior and later in Two Harbors until 1996. He had made his home in Knife River since 1972. He recently had been attending Fond du Lac Community College to be a chemical dependency counselor, and was honored as Student of the Quarter.

He was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church and its parish council, Two Harbors Youth Hockey, Minnesota Deerhunters, Knife River Recreation Council and Alcoholics Anonymous.

Kip is also survived by his wife Patti, a son, another daughter, two sisters, and four grandchildren.

Burial was in Lakeview Cemetery, Two Harbors.
