Mildred Schweitzer “Millie”
Services will be Mon., Oct. 15 for Mildred Schweitzer “Millie” of Proctor. She passed away unexpectedly, Sun., Oct. 7, 2001, at her home. She was 82.

Millie was a waitress in Duluth. She started at the 5th Ave. Hotel and Woolworth’s, then went to Murray’s in Minneapolis. She also worked as a waitress in Florida until she moved to Duluth in 1988. She was voted one of the top ten waitresses in the country.

Millie was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran in Proctor. She also belonged to the 20th Century Club and the Women’s Institute.

Millie was preceded in death by her husband John.

She is survived by her son Crash (Shirley) Carlson of Proctor, grandchildren Marcia (Wally) DuPuis of Cloquet, Mark (Nancy) Carlson of Proctor, Marlin and Kim Carlson of Esko, great-grandchildren Sheri (Chris) Holshouser, Angela, Joe, Ashley, Dave, Adam, Heather, Matthew, Chauntel, and Jeremiah Carlson, two great-great-grandchildren Camron and Casey Holshouser, her sister Inga Matuschak of Forest Lake, nephew Ron Matuschak of Duluth, and niece Carol Pearson of Forest Lake.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Sun. evening at Bell Brothers Chapel. The service will be at noon, Mon., Oct. 15, 2001 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Proctor. Inurnment will be in Park Hill Cemetery in Duluth. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Marvin Ray Kellett
Debra Oliver is mourning the death of her father, Marvin Ray Kellett. He died Sat., Oct. 6, 2001 in Duluth from complications following a stroke. He was 70.

The Duluth resident was born in Duluth and graduated from Denfeld High School in 1949. He married Mary D. Lewendowski in Duluth. Marv worked for the U.S. Steel Plant, and then for the Duluth, Winnipeg and Pacific Railway, where he received his machinist apprenticeship. He then worked for Reserve Mining in Silver Bay for 23 years and retired in 1993 after seven years at Cragin Machine Shop in Superior.

Survivors also include his wife of 50 years Mary, two sons, eight grandchildren and a great-grandson, his mother Gladys of Duluth, a sister and two brothers.

Interment was in Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Lillian (Karjalainen) Harnell
Lillian (Karjalainen) Harnell, who had lived in the Twig area for 63 years, died Thurs., Oct. 11, 2001 in a Duluth hospital. She was 84.

The Canosia Road resident was born on June 5, 1917 in Duluth to Charles and Rose (Reinkinen) Karjalainen. Lillian grew up in West Duluth and had been a Twig resident for the past 63 years. She attended Denfeld High School. She was a homemaker and had been Twig Town Hall custodian for over 30 years. She married Russell Carl Harnell on Oct. 1, 1938 in Twig. Lillian was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Twig, and its ELCA Women, and had been a member of the Grand Lake Fire Sirens for 35 years. She loved and enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Grand Lake and her cabin there, laughing, smiling and helping others.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Russell on May 24, 1987, brothers Armas Karjala and Charles Karjalainen and sisters Elsie and her twin Ethel Karjalainen.

Survivors include her children Charles Harnell of Twig, Sally (Jerry) Ford of Hoyt Lakes, Raymond Harnell of Gilbert, Donna Stebner of Duluth and Kenneth Harnell of Saginaw, grandchildren Michael Ford, Marie (Mark) Yapel, Darlene (Kevin) Dunbar, Sherri (Greg) Schrecengost, Steven Johnson, Kristine Johnson, Terressa Harnell, Angela (Vince) Herrera and Brian Harnell, ten great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Virginia Karjalainen, and many special nieces, nephews and friends.

Her warm friendly smile will be greatly missed by all.

The service was Wed. in Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Twig. Rev. Marshall Moen officiated. Burial was in Grand Lake Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Susan D. Smith
Services were held earlier in the week for Susan D. Smith of Saginaw. She died Wed., Oct. 10, 2001 in Cloquet. She was 48.

The Industrial Rd. resident was born in Duluth and after graduating from East High School, joined the Evangelism Corps, where she met her husband Ken. They served together in Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan. They were married in 1974 and attended Vancouver Bible College in British Columbia together. After Bible College, they moved to Nebraska, where they lived until moving back to Duluth in 1983. In 1993, they moved to Saginaw.

Susan worked as a home care provider and had belonged to the Arrowhead Rug Crafters. She was a former member of North Shore Baptist Church. Susan enjoyed camping, being in the outdoors, and being by Lake Superior. She collected agates and miniature keepsakes. She wrote and enjoyed poetry, and was a very loving and thoughtful person.

She is survived by her husband and best friend Ken, sons Nathan and Neal, both of Duluth, and Nicholas who lives at home, her parents Robert and Peggy Hill of Duluth, brothers Bruce (Cathy) Hill of Duluth, W. David Hill of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Norman (Sue) Hill of Minneapolis, and her special nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Travis “Trapper” Robert Nevala
Jason Sumner of Proctor is mourning the death of his brother, Travis “Trapper” Robert Nevala. The Haines Road resident died Thurs., Oct. 11, 2001 at the age of 26.

He was born in Minneapolis and lived in Duluth for 25 years. Travis graduated from Duluth Central High School and attended Lake Superior College.

Also surviving are his mother Jean M. (Steve) Sumner and father Lyle R. (Deborah) of Duluth, two other brothers Christopher Plagemann and Jonathon Plagemann of Duluth, sisters Leslie (Mark) Hanna of Duluth, Kris (Bill) Fulford of Burnsville, Minn., Amy Henriksen of St. Paul and Megan Plagemann of Duluth, maternal grandmother Patricia Bee of Rockport, Texas and paternal grandparents Robert and Deloris “Dolly” Nevala of Embarrass, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews and many friends.

Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Theresa A. (Jelen-Peabody) Fena
Theresa A. (Jelen-Peabody) Fena died Wed., Oct. 3, 2001 in her Midway Avenue home. She was 92.

The Proctor resident was born in Cass Lake, she grew up in Remer. She worked for 25 years at various Duluth stores, including as a baker at Glass Block, an inspector at Western Electric and Garon’s Knitting Mill. She married Angelo A. Fena May 10, 1965 in Duluth, and he passed away in 1996. She was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, brothers Ignace Jelen and Michael Jelen, and a stepson Robert Fena.

She is survived by daughters Twylla Sundin of Proctor, Delila Lukkasson of Duluth and Gladys Senarighi of Eveleth, a son Lyle Peabody of Duluth, stepsons William Fena of Wakasha, Wis., Donald Fena of McGregor and Gary Fena of Spring Lake Park, Minn., sisters Sarah Freeman, Pearl Bell and Helen Reidlon, ten grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and four step-grandchildren.

The funeral Mass was held Mon. in St. Rose Catholic Church, the Rev. Father James Bissonette officiating. Burial was in Oneota Cemetery. Memorials to St. Rose School would be appreciated. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Raymond Martin Dunaiski
Paul Dunaiski of Caribou Lake and Valeria Witte, Solway, are in bereavement following the death of their father and brother, respectively. Raymond Martin Dunaiski died in his Duluth home Sat., Oct. 13, 2001. He was 79.

He was called into active service in the Navy a year before Pearl Harbor in 1940, before high school graduation, and saved his leave for a year to go back to high school for his diploma. After serving aboard the USS Paducah, he was selected for officer’s training in the Naval V-12 Program at Duke University. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant with a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering in 1946, and was hired by General Electric as a design engineer. He held various managerial positions for 34 years with G.E. Retiring from G.E. in 1980, he accepted a position with Siemens in Cincinnati, moving to Sarasota, Fla., when Siemen’s new plant was built in Bradenton in 1984.

He is also survived by his wife of 55 years Marilyn (Miller), and two other children, six grandchildren, two brothers, and several nieces and nephews.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery.

Mildred Alice Truscott
Charlene Ostman of Proctor is saddened by the loss of her sister Mildred Alice Truscott. She died Sun., Oct. 7, 2001 in Duluth. She was 93.

She was born in Madison, Kan., she moved to Duluth in 1913, and graduated from Duluth Central High School in 1927. Mildred attended Duluth Junior College, and worked in Bergetta Moe Bakery and Moland Brothers Trucking (Glendenning) as a rate clerk.

Mildred was a lifelong active member of Woodland United Methodist Church. She was active in Girl Scouts and was an assistant leader and leader for many years of Troop 40. She was an active participant in the American Red Cross and taught first aid class in 1941 and was awarded the Service Award.

Mildred is also survived by two other sisters and 14 nieces and nephews.

Interment was in Park Hill Cemetery.

Clinton W. Bryant
Services were held for Clinton W. Bryant last week. He died Wed., Oct. 17 in Duluth. He was 96.

He was born in Clarion, Iowa. A Duluth resident since 1921, he retired from Interlake Iron Corp. in 1962 after 36 years of service. He was a lifetime member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, West Duluth 1478. Mr. Bryant was preceded in death by his wife Eileen A. (Warnock) on July 28, 1992, sons Ernie on July 24, 1995 and James on Jan. 2, 2000, and two sisters.

Survivors include his son John (Joanne) of Proctor, his daughter-in-law Susie Bryant of Proctor, nine grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandson, and several nieces and nephews.

Services were in Forbes United Methodist Church, Proctor.

Burial was in Oneota cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Herbert Lyle “Herb” Anderson
Services were held earlier in the week for Herbert Lyle “Herb” Anderson. He died unexpectedly Fri., Oct. 19 in Beaver Bay. He was 38.

The Fifth Street Proctor resident was born in Duluth and worked for the Chromaline Corp. since 1989. He married Laurie Anne Wilton on Nov. 3, 1990, in Munger Township. Herb was an avid NASCAR fan and liked to four-wheel, fish and cook. He enjoyed life, had a joke for everyone, and offered a helping hand for everyone. He will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him.

Herb was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Andrew and Christine Anderson, and his maternal grandparents Sophia and Adolph Mencel.

Survivors include his wife Laurie, his parents Herbert L., Sr. and Connie Anderson of Duluth, his brother John A. (Bridget Waller) of Duluth, sisters Mary (Fred Bodin) Holz of Holyoke and Anne (Jim) Einbu of Duluth, his father- and mother-in-law Tom and Frieda Wilton of Brookston, and by his brothers- and sisters-in-law, aunts, uncles, nephews, many friends, and loyal companions Lacy, Rufus and Priscilla.

Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.
