Emory Cooper Herendeen
Services will be held today, Thurs., for Emory Cooper Herendeen of Anderson Rd., Hermantown. He died Sat., Oct. 20, 2001 in St. Mary’s Hospital. He was 79.

Emory was born in Grand Rapids on Feb. 1, 1922. He served in the Air Force during WW II. He married Joyce Bennett in 1948 in Forbes United Methodist Church, Proctor. Emory worked as a clerk for DM&IR Railway Company for 32 years. He was a former Boy Scout leader, a member of Salem Lutheran Church, and Lincoln Park VFW.

Survivors include his wife Joyce, a daughter, a son, four grandchildren, two brothers, and two sisters.

Visitation will continue at Salem Lutheran Church from noon until the 1 p.m. funeral service today.

Burial will be in Oneota cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Robert E. Miller
Brett Barby of Proctor is in bereavement following the death of his stepfather, Robert E. Miller. He died Thurs., Oct. 11, 2001 in a Duluth hospice. He was 67.

The Superior resident was born in Superior and lived many years in Superior and Chicago. He was a forklift driver for Continental Can Co. in Chicago for many years until his retirement in 1984.

Mr. Miller was a member of Holy Assumption Catholic Church.

Robert is also survived by his wife Joan, a son, two daughters, a stepdaughter, another stepson, eight grandchildren, seven stepgrandchildren, five brothers, a sister, a stepsister, and several nieces and nephews.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.

James R. “Reggie” Talbot
James R. “Reggie” Talbot, who worked for the DM&IR for 25 years, died Tues., Oct. 23, 2001 at Lakeshore Lutheran Home in Duluth. He was 92.

The Proctor resident was born in Duluth to David and Mary (Young) Talbot. He moved to Lewistown, Mont. in 1950 and retired as a chef. Reggie was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church, a former member of the Proctor Moose #1302, American Legion Post #106, and the Proctor VFW.

Reggie was preceded in death by his wife Fritzi in 1994, a daughter Betty Lou in 1942, son Lyle in 2000, grandson Jason in 1972, great-grandson Jeff Hart in 2000, sisters Muriel and Edna, brothers Tim, Cleo and Kenneth.

He is survived by daughter Pat (Ken) Funk of Redding, Calif., sons Dave, Sr. (Char) of Duluth, Ron (Ardis) of Duluth, and Mike “Butch” (Arlene) of Hayward, Calif., daughter-in-law Frances Talbot of Great Falls, Mont., 17 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, brothers Donald (Eleanor) of Tucson, Ariz. and Roger (Jessie) of Duluth, and special friend Alma Fontaine of Proctor.

A memorial service was held Saturday. Burial was in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Great Falls, Mont. Memorials to St. Rose. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Scott Joseph Bodell
Services will be held Friday for Scott Joseph Bodell. He died Sun., Oct. 28, 2001 as the result of a traffic accident. He was 43.

The Hermantown resident was born in Superior and had been a lifelong Hermantown resident. He was a graduate of Hermantown High School. He worked for Billington Contracting as a truck driver and heavy machine operator. He was a member of International Union of Operating Engineers 49er’s.

Scott was preceded in death by his grandparents, an infant brother Jimmy, and his mother Ann in 1999.

Survivors include his son Daniel of Hermantown, his father Joe of Duluth, brothers Mark (Hazel) of Saginaw, Paul (Mary) of Duluth and Joseph (Denise) of Midway Township, a sister Nan (Ron) Bodell-Moen of Hermantown, and aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Visitation is today (Thurs.) from 5-7 p.m. and continues from 10 until the 11 a.m. service Fri. in Bell Brothers Chapel. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Superior. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Thomas A. Towner
Former Proctor resident Thomas A. Towner died unexpectedly Sat., Oct. 27, 2001 after a brief illness. He was 40.

Tom was born Oct. 11, 1961. He owned and operated Southgate Family Pizzeria in Cloquet for 18 years. Tom was a sports enthusiast, who enjoyed golfing and football.

He is survived by his wife Jody, a son Thomas, his mother Delores Towner of Duluth, a brother Bill of Indiana, sisters Shirley (Dean) Thompson of Esko and Debbie (Dan) Hill of Proctor, and nieces and nephews.

Interment was in Maple Grove Cemetery, Cloquet.

Pauline Rose Merritt Kulas
Michael Kulas of Proctor is mourning the death of his mother Pauline Rose Merritt Kulas. She died Wed., Oct. 17, 2001 in her Duluth home. She was 65.

She was born in Duluth and was a 1954 graduate of Cathedral High School. She was lector and member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

Pauline is also survived by another son, three daughters, three brothers, 15 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.

Norman G. Ritz
Evelyn Christensen of Proctor is saddened by the death of her brother, Norman G. Ritz. He died Fri., Oct. 26, 2001 in Duluth. He was 77.

He was born in Duluth. He was a former member of St. Clement’s Catholic Church. He was a member of the VFW and the Fond du Lac Chippewa Band.

He is also survived by his devoted partner Frieda Ugstad of Duluth, a son, a step-son, a step-daughter, two brothers, four other sisters, four step-grandchildren, and many relatves and friends

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Duluth VFW honor guard.

Eugene Francis Baker
Vernon Baker of Proctor is saddened by the loss of his brother, Eugene Francis Baker. He died Mon., Oct. 22, 2001 in Nopeming Care Center at the age of 77.

He was born in Bertha, Minn. He married Bernice A. Gault on Sept. 23, 1944, in Duluth. Eugene worked as a foreman for U.S. Steel’s Duluth Works, retiring in 1979 after 38 years of service.

Eugene is also survived by his wife of 57 years Bernice of Cloquet, three sons, five daughters, a sister, three other brothers, 21 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and many friends.

The family wishes to offer their heartfelt appreciation to the Nopeming staff on second floor east for the wonderful loving care and support extended to Eugene and the family members over the past several years.

Geraldine “Gerry” Ruth Mattfeld
Yvonne Wellnitz of Midway is mourning the death of her mother, Geraldine “Gerry” Ruth Mattfeld. She died Sat., Oct. 27, 2001 in a Duluth hospital. She was 73.

The Duluth resident was born in Arriba, Colo. She married Henry Mattfeld in 1948 in Cologne, Minn. She and Henry farmed for 12 years and she served as the organist at Zion Lutheran Church. She also worked at the Waconia Bank. In 1968, they relocated to Gaylord, where Gerry became the receptionist and bookkeeper at Gaylord Hospital. Henry passed away in 1982 and Geraldine moved to Duluth where daughter Yvonne resided.

She joined Gloria Dei Lutheran Church and became active with the choir and the Mary and Martha Circles. Gerry also was past president of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 28.

She is also survived by two sons, four grandchildren, two sisters and a brother.

Interment was in Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery in Benton Township, Cologne.

Gerald D. Weiler
Gerald D. Weiler of Proctor passed away Sun., Nov. 4, 2001 at a Duluth hospital. He was 60.

He was born on Feb. 11, 1941 in Duluth to Edward and Edna (Zebott) Weiler. Gerald was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church and Sheet Metal Union Local 10.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and daughter Lisa.

He is survived by his wife Joy, daughters Dawn (Craig) Lind of Proctor and Tracy (Daniel) Proctor of Rocky Mount, NC, grandchildren Nicole, Chase and Mackenzie, brother Edward (Lorraine) of Proctor, sister Virginia Anderson of Proctor, and nieces and nephews.

Burial was at Augustana Lutheran Church Cemetery in Midway Township. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Nancy McGaw Pohl
Nancy McGaw Pohl died Sun., Nov. 4 at Nopeming Care Center, She was 79.

She was born July 6, 1922 in Atlantic City, New Jersey to Wilton and Ruth McGaw. She moved to Proctor in June 2000 after spending 30 years in the Georgia-Florida area. Nancy, a Naval veteran, enjoyed many years traveling the United States with Vince and their Winnebago Club.

She is survived by her two sons Henry (Barbara Lake) Pohl of Escondidas, Calif. and Wilt (Annette) Pohl of Proctor, granddaughter Caitlin of Proctor, a sister Marty (Fred) Hirsch of Hamden, Conn. and her soul mate of 30 years Vince Madigan.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nopeming Auxiliary fund.
