Esther Marie Mack-Babel, 47, of New Ulm, died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, at the New Ulm Medical Center of leimyosarcoma, a rare form of cancer.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Fr. Douglas Grams at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 15, at the Church of St. Mary in New Ulm. Burial will follow in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation is Tuesday from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Church of St. Mary in New Ulm and one hour prior to service at the church.
Schmucker Funeral Service of New Ulm is handling the arrangements.
Esther is survived by her husband, Tim; children, Zachary, of St. Cloud, Molly, of Minneapolis, Jacob, Joseph, Madeline, Britta and August, at home; father, Stanley F. Mack, New Ulm; sister, Maggie and husband Doug Schwab of New Ulm, brothers, Stanley and wife Marggie Liebfried of Fridley, Frank and wife Joan of Devils Lake, N.D., Bill and wife Sandie of Langdon, N.D., and Andy of Fairmont; brother-in-law Jim Babel and wife Sharon of Forest Lake; aunts and uncles, Mrs. Agatha Mack of Lake Crystal, Frank and Agnes Mack of Bertha, Mrs. Delores Guldan of Sleepy Eye, and Cliff and Vicki Kelzer of Oakdale; 20 nieces and nephews and many cousins.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Bernice Mack, in 1987 and a niece, Heidi Mack, also in 1987.
Esther was born April 29, 1956, in New Ulm, Minn., to Stanley F. and Bernice (Guldan) Mack. She was a 1974 graduate of New Ulm Cathedral High School and a 1975 graduate of the Mankato Area Technical Institute. She married Timothy T. Babel on June 2, 1979, at the Church of St. Mary in New Ulm. Tim and Esther lived in Madison Lake before returning to New Ulm in 1983.
Everything Esther did -- from baking bread to sewing quilts to comforting children to welcoming guests -- came from her deep faith and her loving heart. She was a homemaker in the truest sense of the word. Esther was also a generous member of the Church of St. Mary, a gracious supporter of all District 88 schools and a dear friend to the community.
Memorials are preferred to the donor's choice.

Waldo E. Kletscher, 70, of Redwood Falls, died Sunday, Oct. 12, 2003, at Wood Dale Nursing Home, Redwood Falls.
Services are 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 15, at St. Catherine's Catholic Church, Redwood Falls. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Nelson-Martin Funeral Service in Redwood Falls with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. and Wednesday at the church, one hour prior to the service.
He is survived by his wife Florence of Redwood Falls; sisters, Edwina Munsch of Marshall and Bonnie MacLeod of Aurora, Colo.; stepmother Lydia Kletscher of Echo; three half-sisters, Kathy Wurzinger of Albertville, Karen of Edina; and Teresa Ferkenstad of St. Peter.
He was born July 2, 1933, to Ed and Leona (Zimmer) Kletscher in Echo Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota.

Gerald T. 'Jerry' Reed, 44, of Madison Lake and formerly of New Ulm, died Friday, Oct. 10, 2003 at Gilbert, Minn., due to an ATV accident.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Marysburg with Rev. Edwin Savundra officiating. Burial will be in Marysburg Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m., Wednesday, at Mankato Mortuary and one hour before services at church on Thursday.
Memorials may be given to an organization of the donor's choice.
Jerry was born Aug, 17, 1959, to Robert F. and Mary Kay (Nolan) Reed in New Ulm. He married Barbara Nelson on Aug. 8, 1987, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, rural Mankato. He was employed at Pro-Fabrication in Madison Lake. Jerry enjoyed fishing, golf, playing pool, watching sports, dogs, and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara; two sons, Brandon and Ryan Reed all of Madison Lake; parents, Robert F. and Mary Kay Reed of New Ulm; five brothers and their wives, Thomas and Peggy Reed of Janesville, Robert and Sandee Reed of Scandia, Kenneth and Sherry Reed, Daniel and Jayne Reed, all of New Ulm, Brian and Kelly Reed of Lafayette; five sisters and their husbands, Mary Hacker and fiancé Lester Roach of New Ulm, Elaine and Jim Sprenger, Eileen and Dennis LeGare, Beth and Tom Bastian, Kathy and Jim Bastian, all of New Ulm; nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by an infant brother and sister.

Alfred Suess, 75, of Sleepy Eye, Minn., died on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003 at Immanuel St. Joseph's Hospital in Mankato, Minn.
Service will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 10:30 a.m. The Clergy will be Brian Oestreich. Interment will be at the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be at Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye, on Monday, Oct. 13, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Sturm on Tuesday Oct. 14, 2003 from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.
Rosary will be at 4:30 p.m. Monday. Wake Service at 8 p.m. Monday.
Alfred was born on Jan. 5, 1928, to Fred and Louisa (Hindermann) Suess in Nicollet County near St. George, Minn. He attended school in Mulligan Township. On April 2, 1951 Alfred was united in marriage to Verna (Mickelson) in Leavenworth, Minn., at the Church of the Japanese Martyrs. He served in the Korean War from 1952 to 1954 when he was honorably discharged. He received the Bronze Star. Alfred was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye, of Isaac-Radl VFW Post 800, and the Knights of Columbus. Alfred loved woodworking, baseball and fishing. He especially enjoyed his grandchildren and great grandchild.
Alfred is survived by his wife, Verna of Sleepy Eye; son Duane Suess of Sleepy Eye; two grandchildren, Becky Suess-Brey of New Ulm, Minn., Craig Suess of Sleepy Eye; a great-grandson, Shawn Suess of New Ulm, Minn.; five sisters, Rosella Windschitl of Sleepy Eye, Adeline Svoboda of Olivia, Marie Evers and her husband Walter, Cecelia Zwaschka and her husband Richard, Marjorie Prokesch and her husband Thomas, all of Comfrey; brother-in-law, Wesley Mickelson of Springfield; three sisters-in-law, Betty Mickelson of Springfield, Della Schieffert of Sleepy Eye, and Lois Nelson and her husband Bill of Sleepy Eye.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Norbert, Donald, and James Suess; and three sisters, Leona, Delores and Hildegard.

Waldemar "Wally" Freyholtz, 77, of 1404 South German Street in New Ulm died Friday, Oct. 10, 2003 at the Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm.
Funeral service will be Tuesday at the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Fairfax with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 10 - 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church. The Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm is handling the arrangements.

Pamela Baker, 42, of Aitkin, formerly of Gaylord, died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, at her home.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Gaylord, with burial at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Gaylord.
Visitation will be 4 - 7 p.m. Wednesday and 7:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. Thursday at the Egesdal Funeral Home in Gaylord, and will continue one hour prior to service at the church on Thursday.
Pamela is survived by her parents Don and Sandra Schulte of Gaylord; husband Brant Baker of Aitkin; daughters, Cassandra Holtz of Brainerd, and Samantha Wibsted of Brainerd; stepdaughters, Rachael Baker of Aitkin, Stephanie Baker of Red Wing, and Jessica Faust of Pierz; sisters, Connie Kuphal of Glencoe, and Tanya Liebl of Big Lake; and two grandchildren.
Pamela was born Feb. 4, 1961, to Donald and Sandra (Squier) Schulte in Gaylord. She served in the U.S. Army and received an honorable discharge in 1980.

Gerald Grausam, 81, of Springfield, died on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, at the New Ulm Medical Center in New Ulm.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003, at St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Springfield, with Father Dennis Labat officiating. Burial will be at St. Raphael's Catholic Cemetery in Springfield.
Visitation will be 4:40 - 8:30 p.m. Wednesday and 7:30 - 10 a.m. Thursday at the Sturm Funeral Home in Springfield. There will be a 7 p.m. Parish Prayer Service on Wednesday at the Sturm Funeral Home and a 10 a.m. K.C. Rosary on Thursday at St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Springfield.
Gerald John Grausam was born May 10, 1922, in Burnstown Township, the son of John and Josephine (Turbes) Grausam. He attended country school and helped his father with the family farm. On Aug. 26, 1952, Jerry married Mary Griebel at the St. John Catholic Church in Searles. Jerry had farmed his home farm for more than 50 years when the couple moved into Springfield in 1999. He was a member of the St. Raphael's Catholic Church, where he was an usher for many years. Jerry was a K.C. member. He enjoyed farming, taking care of animals, his lawn and family.
He is survived by his wife Mary Grausam of Springfield; two daughters, Ginny and husband Gary Norsten of Willmar, and Pattie and husband Steve Engel of Apple Valley; a son, Jack and wife Nancy Grausam of New Ulm; and grandchildren, Kristen Norsten, Justin and Jamie Engel, and Dustin and Amber Grausam.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Jacob Engel; his parents; a brother, Vince; and sister, Cyrilla Schultz.

Alvin F. Retzlaff, 84, of Greenwood Village, Colo., formerly of New Ulm, died Thursday, Oct. 9, 2003, following a long battle with leukemia.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003, at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Delano, with burial East Mt. Olive Cemetery in Delano. Arrangements are with the Iten Funeral Service in Delano.
Al is survived by his mother Mary Retzlaff; son Michael Retzlaff; daughter Diana Efta; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Alvin F. Retzlaff was born July 27, 1919, to F.H. and Mary (Fuller) Retzlaff in New Ulm.

Ralph E. Gerasch, 79, of 904 South Franklin St., New Ulm, died Saturday, October 11, 2003 at the Sleepy Eye Care Center in Sleepy Eye.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m., Thursday, October 16, 2003, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm with Father Douglas Grams officiating. Private family burial will follow in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to the time of service at the church on Thursday. The Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm is in charge of the arrangements.
Ralph is survived by his wife, Inez Gerasch, a resident of the Sleepy Eye Care Center in Sleepy Eye; mother, Ann Gerasch of New Ulm; daughters and son-in-law, Lucinda and Dr. Ennio Cipani of Vasalia, California, and Maribeth Weidler and fiance, Tony Loftis both of Menomonie, Wisconsin; son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Loretta Gerasch of New Ulm; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Lyle Dobbins of Granbury, Texas; brothers and sisters-in-law, Vernon and Pat Gerasch of South Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Norbert and Mary Alice Gerasch of Virginia Beach, Virginia, James and Kay Gerasch of New Ulm, and Eugene and Jane Gerasch of Sleepy Eye.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ernest Gerasch; brothers, Earl Gerasch and Gerald Gerasch; sisters, Alice Suess, and Janet Striegel.
Ralph was born on February 13, 1924 in New Ulm to Ernest and Ann (Brandl) Gerasch. He attended Holy Trinity High School in New Ulm. He enlisted in the United States Army in December of 1942 and served in the South Pacific during WWII. He was discharged in 1946. On July 8, 1947, he married Inez Just at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm. He then joined the New Ulm National Guard 47th division during the Korean War. He worked at McCleary Auto Parts from 1951 until his retirement in 1987. He was a member of the St. Patrick's Council #1076 Knights of Columbus in New Ulm, Turner Hall, and the Seifert Bianchi American Legion Post #132 in New Ulm. He enjoyed playing cards, gardening, and wood working.

Leonard Gjerstad, 77 of Mankato and formerly of New Ulm, died Monday, October 13, 2003 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester,
Memorial service is 11 a.m., Friday at Christ the King Lutheran Church, Mankato, with burial in Glenwood Cemetery at a later date.
Visitation will be one hour before services at church on Friday.
Mankato Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
He is survived by his wife Roberta; a son, Mark of Gibbon; a daughter, Heidi Weilage of North Mankato; six grandchildren; a brother, Russell Gjerstad of Long Prairie, and a sister, Phyllis Hegle of Winona.
Leonard was born Sept. 10, 1926 in Bertha, to Hobart and Elizabeth (Mastrud) Gjerstad.

Viola Anna Krueger, 94, of Clements, died Monday, Oct. 13, 2003, at Divine Providence Community Home in Sleepy Eye.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, Oct. 17, at the Church of St. Joseph in Clements. Burial will be at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Clements.
Visitation will be 4 - 7 p.m., Thursday at the Sturm Funeral Home in Springfield and 9 - 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church. There will be a 6:30 p.m. prayer service Thursday at Sturm Funeral Home.
Viola is survived by her daughters, Mary Ann Saraceno of Wheatridge, Colo., Veronica Elsing of Morgan, and Marcella Griffith of Rogue River, Ore.; sons, Jerome Krueger of Puertecious, Mexico, August L. Krueger of Clements, Joseph Krueger of Jonesborough, Tenn., Kenneth Krueger of Princeton, and John Krueger of Hillman; 41 grandchildren; 94 great-grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren; and sister Julia Johnson of Minneapolis.
Viola Anna Krueger was born Aug. 29, 1909, to John and Anna (Ludwig) Jaros in Vesta.

Harold E. Baarts 95, of Vernon Center, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, at Mapleton Community Home.
Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday, Oct, 20, 2003, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Vernon Center. Burial will be in Vernon Center Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 - 5 p.m. Sunday at Lake Crystal Mortuary and one hour before services at the church on Monday.
Memorials are preferred to an organization of the donor's choice.
Harold E. Baarts was born July 27, 1908, in Pleasant Mound Township, Blue Earth County. He married Florence Cooling on June 30, 1940, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Good Thunder. For 65 years, he sold Rawleigh and Fuller Brush products in Blue Earth and Waseca counties. He was forced to retire on May 21, 1993, when he suffered a stroke. He enjoyed his family, work, visiting with his customers and gardening.
Survivors include his wife Florence Baarts; son H. Calvin Baarts; and grandsons, Eric and Adam Baarts, all of Vernon Center.
He was preceded in death by daughter-in-law Chrys Baarts; and grandson, Scott Daniel Baarts.

Barbara L. Brown, 59, of Sleepy Eye, died on Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, at Divine Providence Community Home in Sleepy Eye.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct, 18, 2003, at Divine Providence Community Home Chapel in Sleepy Eye, with Pastor Phil Siefkes officiating. Interment will be at the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be 5 - 7 p.m. today at Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye, and 1 - 2 p.m. Saturday Divine Providence Community Home Chapel.
Barbara was born on March 12, 1944, in Independence, Mo., the daughter of Louis and Bobbie (Courtney) Fields. She attended Rye High School in Rye, Colo., where she graduated in 1962. After Jim's discharge from the service, Barb married James Brown on Aug. 21, 1965, in Pueblo, Colo. The couple made their home in Sleepy Eye, where Barb worked as a nurse aid at the Sleepy Eye Hospital, the Sleepy Eye Care Center and Divine Providence Community Home. She also did day care and head start as well as working at the Orchid Inn as a cook and donut maker at Casey's.
Barb was a Girl Scout Leader and Cub Scout Leader. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, attending church, flower gardening, and going for drives in the country. Her hobbies included: sewing, quilting, reading, watching t.v., listening to music, square dancing and animals.
Survivors include her children and their spouses, Richard and Kelli Brown of Sleepy Eye, Joy and James Kotten of Sleepy Eye, Allen and Tanya Brown of Renville, and Bobby and Angela Brown of Cheyenne, Wyo.; nine grandchildren, Kody Brown, Tyler Schultz, Jacob Schultz, Shaniah Brown, Nathaniel Volz, and Amber, Laura, Aimee and Erin Kotten; mother Bobbie Bush of Cripple Creek, Colo., brother Keith and Karen Beck of Cripple Creek, Colo.; sister Debi and James Reynolds of Cripple Creek, Colo.; sister-in-law Joanne and John Mills of Lake Crystal; brother-in-law Donald Brown of Sleepy Eye; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father; husband James in 1995; and an infant daughter.

Raymond 'Ray' Hartman, 92, of New Ulm, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, at Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003, at the First United Methodist Church in New Ulm, Rev. Dean Nosek officiating.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Schmucker Funeral Service of New Ulm is handling arrangements.
Raymond Russell Hartman was born Feb. 14, 1911, to William and Ella (Hinds) Hartman in Des Moines, Iowa, where he graduated from North High School in 1929. He was employed by F.W. Woolworth Company for 36 years, from 1929-1965, in various communities. He married Alice Snook in 1932 in Des Moines, Iowa. They moved to New Ulm in 1941. After retiring from F.W. Woolworth in 1965, Ray started his own cabinet shop and woodworking business. Alice passed away in 1978. In 1979, he married Millie Tyrrell and continued with his woodworking business. Millie died in 1994. Ray had been a resident of Oak Hills Living Center since 1996.
Raymond was a member of the Lions Club in Thief River Falls, and a member of the Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club in New Ulm. He held many offices in Rotary, including Sergeant-at-Arms and President. He was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow and was again honored by the club in 1995 with a lifetime membership after 50 years of service. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and sang in the choir at the Oakwood United Methodist Church.
Ray is survived by his daughter Rayleene Emmeck and husband Dale of Akeley; son Kenneth Hartman and wife Diann of Maple Grove; step-children, Virginia Hammel of Aitkin, and George Tyrrell and wife Janet of Truman; grandchildren, David and Kenneth Emmeck, and Trevor and Suzanne Hartman; great-grandchildren, Jami Hubly, Jessica, Jacob, and Brian Emmeck; stepgrandchildren, Doug and Steve Hammel, Audry Kolquist, Jana Le Gaffer, and Tara Le Tyrrell; step-great-grandchildren, Dustin and Chris Hammel, Tyrrell and Corey Gaffer, and Melissa and Sara Kolquist; his sister Audrey Logan of Des Moines, Iowa; niece Judy Patterson, and nephew Jim Logan and wife Marie, all of Des Moines, Iowa.

Roger Langevin, 54, of St. James, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, in Rapid City, S.D.
Services are 10 a.m., Monday, Oct. 20, at Holy Family catholic Parish in Lake Crystal with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 1-5 p.m., Sunday, at Sturm Funeral Home in St. James, and one hour before services at the church.
