Frances L. Hocking
Annabelle Roach of Proctor is saddened by the death of her sister Frances L. Hocking of Duluth. She died Fri., Nov. 9, 2001, in Chris Jensen Health & Rehabilitation Center. She was 81.

Frances was born in Bovey and graduated from Chisholm High School in 1938. She married James Hocking in 1942. She worked in Hibbing as a beautician. Her family moved to Proctor in 1962, where she lived until entering Chris Jensen in June of this year. She was a former member of St. Rose Catholic Church in Proctor and member of the VFW Auxiliary.

She is also survived by two daughters, two other sisters, three grand-daughters, her beloved cat Lisa, several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery.

Jerry H. Norstrom
Jerry H. Norstrom of Central Avenue, Duluth, died Thurs., Nov. 8, 2001, in his residence. He was 67.

Jerry was born in Duluth to Stanley B. and Myrtle A. (Preston) Norstrom and attended schools in Duluth and Proctor. He served in the Army and was employed by the DM&IR Railroad until his retirement.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister.

He is survived by a brother, two sisters, nieces and nephews.

Edmund Lawrence Kane
Karen Erickson of Proctor is mourning the death of her father Edmund Lawrence Kane of Silver Bay. He died Mon., Nov. 5, 2001 in a Duluth hospital. He was 80.

He was born in Minneapolis, grew up and attended schools in Sturgeon Lake, then served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in the construction of Gooseberry Falls State Park. He worked in Butte, Mont., in the copper mines, then entered the Army, serving as a master sergeant in the Pacific Theater, where he was awarded the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. He married Arlene Brabec in 1948. After the war, he worked in construction in the building of Lake Vermilion Dam, then moved to Silver Bay where he worked for the former Reserve Mining Co. He also worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. in the maintenance department, where he was awarded the Bronze Vail Award for his rescue of people on Wilson Lake.

He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He had also served on the Silver Bay Fire and Rescue Department.

Survivors also include his wife of 53 years Arlene, a son, a sister, a brother, four grandchildren, his mother-in-law, a niece, a nephew and many friends.

Burial was in Sawtooth Mountain Cemetery, Beaver Bay Township.

Pauline Ruth Koncal
Services were held last week for Pauline Ruth Koncal. She died Tues., Nov. 13, 2001 in a Duluth hospice. She was 74.

She was born Feb. 4, 1927, in Duluth to Rudolph and Magenelina Nickel. Pauline was united in marriage to Charles Koncal on Sept. 17, 1943, in Duluth.

Pauline was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Proctor and its Women’s Circle, Northern Pine Girl Scouts, and Cub Scouts. She enjoyed sewing, needlepoint and traveling.

She was preceded in death by her brother Henry Nickel.

Pauline is survived by her husband of 58 years Charles, a son Michael (Pam) Koncal of Wrenshall, daughters Jeanne Koncal and Jackie (Steve) Zapp, both of Duluth, Joan (Johnnie) Rowe of Hermantown, Judy (Howard) Robertson of Cloquet, Joy Koncal of Mahtowa and Janet Jacobs of Duluth, 18 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, a brother Rudolph “Vern” (Vivian) Nickel of Palm Coast, Fla., sisters-in-law Martha Kent and Rose Teman, both of Duluth, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

LeRoy Woodrow Slattengren
Services were held last week for LeRoy Woodrow Slattengren. He died Tues., Nov. 20, 2001 in a Duluth hospital. He was 88.

He was born in Shafer, Minn. He was a 1933 graduate of Taylors Falls High School and was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran of World War II. LeRoy married Betty Evanson on July 28, 1943 in Duluth. They owned a dairy farm for several years in Chisago County, near Shafer. After moving to Proctor in 1955, he was employed by the Duluth Missabe and Iron Range Railway and later worked for plant services at UMD, from which he retired. He had been a Duluth resident since 1978. During retirement, he volunteered for R.S.V.P. He enjoyed hunting and outdoor activities with his family.

LeRoy was a longtime member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Proctor, where he served on the church council, sang in the choir, was a synod delegate, and was a Boy Scout committee man. He was a current member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Alden and Lloyd Slattengren.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years Betty, sons David (Sonya) of Brooklyn Center, Minn. and John (Joan), Paul, Thomas (Marilyn) and Roger, all of Duluth, a daughter Karen (Douglas) Vandenberg of Duluth, three sisters, two sisters-in-law, 16 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

Entombment was in Sunrise Memorial Park. Military honors were accorded by the Duluth VFW Combined Honor Guard. Memorials to Holy Cross Lutheran Church or Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Proctor, would be appreciated. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Joel R. Briggs
Joel R. Briggs, who graduated from Proctor High School in 1975, succumbed to injuries he suffered from a motorcycle accident Sat., Nov. 17, 2001.

Joel was born in Rochester, Minn., to Joseph C. and J. Edith “Edi” (Rysted) Briggs. Joel married Carol M. Strapple on Dec. 30, 1992, in Superior.

Joel was an auto mechanic and had expertise on preparing cars to be street rods. He owned and operated T & T Muffler in Duluth for several years, and added a second location in Superior in 1993. Joel owned and operated That Ol’ Car Place in Superior since 1996. He was a member of the Vintage Times Car Club, and the Murillo (Ontario) Street Rod Association. Joel enjoyed riding his motorcycle and snowmobile. He and Carol taught snowmobile safety courses in Superior for five years.

Joel was preceded in death by his father Joseph C. Briggs, and brother-in-law Martin Bolland.

He is survived by his wife Carol, sons Matt, Eric and Jim, his mother Edi Briggs of Duluth, sisters Joanne Bolland of Hutchinson, Minn. and Jola (Kelley) Johnson of Hector, Minn., a brother Marjoe “Joe” (April) Briggs of Eden Prairie, Minn., his mother and father-in-law Thomas L. and Helen Strapple of Saginaw, brothers-in-law Tom (Elyse) Strapple of Hermantown and Bill (Shelly) Strapple of Duluth, a sister-in-law Betty (Troy) Chalstrom of Duluth, several aunts and uncles, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Ludvig Mortenson Krokum
Ludvig Mortenson Krokum, who moved to Proctor in 1923 from Norway, died Fri., Nov. 30, 2001 in a Duluth hospital. He was 97.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in Bell Brothers Chapel, the Rev. Jeffrey Holter officiating.

He was born in Hungdorf, Norway. Ludvig married Signe Klara Lerdahl in 1928, and together they made their home on Vinland Street. Ludvig was a foreman in the Duluth Missabe & Iron Range Railway’s Mechanical Department. Upon his retirement, the Krokums lived in Minneapolis and Florida, returning to Proctor in the early 1980’s.

Ludvig was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, DM&IR Veterans Association, Euclid Lodge, Scottish Rite, AARP and a life member of the Sons of Norway.

He was preceded in death by four siblings, and his wife Signe on May 23, 2000.

Survivors include his son Rodney (Audrey) of Cincinnati, grandchildren Candy (John) Ploetz of Calif., Scott (Kathy) Krokum of Duluth, and Lee (Tanya Triplett) Krokum and Lucy (Richard Hastings) Krokum, both of Minneapolis, and great-grandchildren Nicholas, Ryan, Jacob, Jennifer, Kerry, Alex and Travis.

Memorials preferred to Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Herbert “Herb” Elton Swanson
Family and friends of Herbert “Herb” Elton Swanson will gather today, Thurs., in Bell Brothers Chapel. The former Maple Grove Rd. resident died Mon., Dec. 3, 2001 in Nopeming Nursing Home. He was 71.

Herb was born in Birmingham, Mich. and lived in the area since childhood. Herb married Yvonne “Dolly” Burcar on March 8, 1947. He was a retired ironworker and member of Local 563 Ironworker’s Union. He went to Thule, Greenland, and along with his brothers, helped build the defense system radar towers. Herb participated in the family-owned and operated Christmas tree lot. He also helped his wife with the operation of her antique and collectible shop for over 20 years.

Herb was preceded in death by his parents, wife Dolly, brothers Maynard and George “Bud”.

Surviving are three daughters Charlotte (Dan R.) Swanson of Superior, Deborah (Roger) Anderson of Hermantown, and Sharon Hennessy (Brad Bennett) of Duluth; three sons Herbert “Jibber” (Donna) of Proctor, Daniel J. (Nancy) of Duluth and David of Trego, Wisc.; a sister, a brother, two sisters-in-law, 11 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Inurnment was in the Hermantown Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Lyla Marie Westberg
Lyla Marie Westberg, who lived with her husband Edward in Saginaw for 65 years, died Sun., Dec. 2, 2001 in Cloquet. She was 93.

Lyla was born in Orr and attended school there. She married Edmund Westberg, and was his wife and a homemaker.

Lyla is survived by her husband Edmund, daughters Carol (Richard) Sobczak of Duluth and Marilyn Bloom of Luck, Wis., a sister Bertha Zatocil of Minneapolis, sisters-in-law Alice Engman of Twig, Laura Westberg of Calif., Ruth Takkunen of Angora, Minn., and Virginia Takkunen of Orr, six grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.

William Fredrick Yax, Services were held last week for William Fredrick Yax II. He died Tues., Dec. 4, 2001 in his Pike Lake home at the age of 63.

He was born Oct. 31, 1938, in Duluth to William F. and Isabel (Perrault) Yax. He was a 1956 graduate of Hermantown High School. He married Patricia Ann Johnson and had been married for 41 years. In his early years, Bill worked part time as a police officer with Hermantown Police Department, along with working as a master electrician. He had been a master electrician for 44 years as a member of Local 242, and had been the owner-operator of Yax Electric for 32 years.

Bill was a charter member of Skyline Rotary, served on many boards and was the president in 1996-97. He also was a Paul Harris Fellow many times and he received “Rotarian of the Year” twice, one was with his wife Patty. He had been active in the Hermantown Community for many years. Bill served as president of the High Village Breezy Point for 13 years. He had been a part of the Hermantown Fire Department for 19 years and the Canosia Fire Department for 15 years, and an emergency medical technician for more than 26 years. He was a hockey coach of Hermantown Youth Hockey. Bill was a member of Lake Superior Masonic Lodge 349 and Proctor Moose 1302.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and grandson Paul Allen Rutka.

Survivors include his spouse of 41 years Patricia (Johnson) Yax, daughter Patty (Paul) Rutka of Princeton, Minn., sons William F. Yax III and Michael M. Yax, both of Duluth, five grandchildren, and his mother-in-law Dolly Johnson of Duluth.
