James E. Pierre
James E. Pierre, who was a bus driver for the Proctor Public Schools, died Wed., Nov. 28, 2001 in a Duluth hospital. He was 71.

The Esko resident was born in Muskegon, Mich. to Swedish immigrant parents. He grew up in Minneapolis, lived in Bloomington for 22 years, and since 1978 he had lived in Esko. Jim also worked for International Harvester for many years. Jim was an Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of Northwoods United Methodist Church in Esko.

He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years Anna, children Anita (Mark) Kelly, Roland (Christina), Robert (Tammy), Laura (David) Dahl, Roger (Karen) and Joanie (Noel) Pierre, and 16 grandchildren.

Burial was in Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis.

Brent A. Oling
Brent A. Oling, who graduated from Proctor High School, died Thurs., Dec. 6, 2001 in a Cloquet hospital. He was 45.

The Duluth resident lived in the area throughout his life. He was a veteran of the Navy. He worked for Black Bear Casino in food services for several years.

He was preceded in death by his parents Bert and Gladys Oling.

He is survived by sisters Joy (Paul) Quisling of Zanesville, Ohio, and Shirley (Ron) Adolphson of Garrison, Minn., and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Inurnment was in Fort Ripley Cemetery, Fort Ripley, Minn.

Gerrit “Jerry” Vandenberg
Gerrit “Jerry” Vandenberg, who moved to Proctor in 1942, died Fri., Nov. 30, 2001 in Duluth. He was 89.

He was born Jan. 8, 1912, on Park Point in Duluth. He married Sylvia Turpanen and then moved to Pine City, Minn., where he worked for Minnesota Tea Co. as a route salesman. After moving to Proctor, he worked for Grand Union Tea Co. as a district manager. He worked for Daugherty Hardware for 18 years, retiring in 1974. Gerrit was a member of Salem Covenant Church and United Commercial Travelers. He was a volunteer driver for St. Louis County for 18 years.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years Sylvia, sons Gerrit N. (Merdita) of Port Lions, Alaska, Michael (Jeri) and Douglas (Karen), all of Duluth, brothers John, Frank, Bernard and George, sisters Florence Selari and Martha Tarabula, grandchildren Gerrit, Sherry, Kevin, Victoria (William) Knapp, Tammy (Andy) Cerrato, Bonnie (Ed) Shiels, Mary, Craig (Anna), Jeff and Debbie (Mitch) Mathers, and five great-grandchildren.

Burial was in Forest Hill cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Patricia “Pat” A. Pilcher
Former Proctorite Gregg Pilcher is mourning the death of his mother Patricia “Pat” A. Pilcher. She died Thurs., Dec. 13, 2001 in a Duluth hospital. She was 73.

She was born and raised in Duluth and attended schools here. She married Gerald L. Pilcher in 1949. She worked for 20 years at Chris Jensen Nursing Home and the previous Cook Home. She enjoyed her country home, spending time with and caring for her grandchildren. She also had a special place in her heart for her pets.

Survivors also include four daughters, two other sons, a brother, a sister, 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Burial was in Park Hill Cemetery.

Peter J. Francisco
Peter J. Francisco of Midway Township went home to be with the Lord on Sun., Dec. 16, 2001, with his family at his side. He was 83.

Peter was born to Vincent and Filamina (Romano) Gianfrancisco in 1918 in Duluth. He served in the U.S. Army from 1944-1946 with the 376th Infantry 94th Division under Patton. He was wounded in action in Germany prior to the 3rd Army crossing the Rhine River. He received the Purple Heart and three Bronze Stars. He worked for the St. Louis County Highway Maintenance Department for 30 years. He liked to fish, go for walks, spend time with family, and tell stories and jokes.

Peter was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Carmella, and brothers Victor, Anthony, James, John, and Dominick.

Survivors include his wife Dollie of fifty years, daughters Darlene (Al) Bayer of Calif. and Frances (Cliff Peterson) Francisco of Duluth, son William (Mary Anne Swanson) Lehto of Duluth, foster son, Darryl Sawyer of Duluth, grandchildren Jeremy Francisco and Susan Lehto of Duluth and Heidi Bayer of Calif., great-grandchildren Amanda, John and Laurie-Leigh Fehl of Duluth, a sister Mary (Ed) Murray of White Bear Lake, and several family and friends.

Graveside services held in Ft. Snelling National cemetery at Peter’s request. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Roger Gene Kratt
Proctor area family and friends are mourning the death of Roger Gene Kratt. He died Sun., Dec. 16, 2001 in his Duluth residence. He was 66.

He was a lifelong Duluth resident and an Air Force veteran. He was a retired electrician and was a member of the IBEW.

Roger was preceded in death by his father Reinhold.

He is survived by his sons Brett Kratt of Proctor and Burton Kratt of Saginaw, his mother Ida Johnson of Hermantown, a sister Margaret (Robert) Kanuit of Duluth, a brother Wayne (Nancy) Kratt of Saginaw, grandsons Ryan and Kyle, and aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at a later date. At Roger’s request, his body was donated to the University of Minnesota Bequest Program. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Douglas G. Scouton
Douglas G. Scouton, who had a long battle with multiple sclerosis and diabetes, died Fri., Dec. 14, 2001 in a Duluth hospital. He was 46.

He was born to Frank and Joan (Bolland) Scouton Nov. 11, 1955, in Duluth. He attended Proctor High School. Douglas had worked as a union laborer in the construction field for many years.

He was preceded in death by a son Douglas Jr. on Dec. 17, 1987.

He is survived by his parents Frank and Joan of Twig, son Shane (Kristin) of Faribault, Minn., brothers Frank Jr., Larry (Lana) and Mike, all of Twig, sisters Carla (Mike) Salo and Debora (Roger) Malzac, both of Twig, granddaughter Brooke, many nieces and nephews.

A service was held Monday in Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Twig. Burial was in Twig Cemetery.

Fred H. Johncox
Ruby Thilmany, of Bayview, is saddened by the loss of her brother, Fred H. Johncox. The Mesa, Ariz. resident died Sat., Dec. 1, 2001. He was 86.

He was a veteran of the Marines.

Survivors also include his wife Gladys of Mesa, two sons, and another sister.

Services were held Dec. 6 in Mariposa Gardens Chapel in Mesa.

Joseph Edward Provinske
Joseph Edward Provinske, who graduated from Proctor High School, died Sat., Dec. 8, 2001 on his yacht in San Rafael, Calif. He was 63.

A native of the area, he lived in Pinole, Calif., for 45 years. He was a superintendent for Pacific Mechanical Corp. of Concord, Calif. Joseph was a member of Lock Lomond Yacht Club of San Rafael.

He was preceded in death by his wife Janelle on Dec. 5, 2000.

Joseph is survived by and was the loving father of Darin J. Provinske of Pinole, and Dana J. Repp and her husband Richard of Gig Harbor, Wash, devoted grandfather of Ryan R. Provinske and Jessica J. Repp, and dear brother of Sharon Labovitz and Belle Sundbom, both of Duluth.

Services were held Dec. 13 in Sunset View Mortuary, El Cerrito, Calif.

Dorothy Beatrice (Lind) Janke
Services were held for Dorothy Beatrice (Lind) Janke. The Alborn resident died Tues., Dec. 11 in a Duluth hospital. She was 85.

Dorothy was born in Minneapolis to Fred and Anna (Savage) Lind. She was a lifelong resident of Alborn. She married William C. Janke Feb. 28, 1943. They were married for 58 years. Dorothy was a retired cook from Miller-Dwan, a home health aide and a homemaker. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Saginaw.

Dorothy is survived by her sons Harold (Margaret) and William E. (Wendy) both of Alborn, Howard (Ruth) of Esko and Ellwyn (Delores) of Saginaw, daughters Joan (Myron) Ugstad, Lois (John) Larson and Alice (Raymond) Larson all of Alborn, brothers Fred Lind and Curtis (Darlene) Lind, both of Saginaw, and Morrie (Helen) Lind of Duluth, sister Jenny (Merlin) Baublitz of Proctor, brothers-in-law Howard (Esther) Amborn of Minneapolis and Ronald (Karen) Amborn of Saginaw, sister-in-law Selma Arbuckle of Saginaw, 17 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.

Interment in St. John’s Cemetery, Industrial Twsp.

Carl Wesley Hermanson
Ronald Hermanson of Proctor is mourning the death of his father, Carl Wesley Hermanson. He died Tues., Dec. 18, 2001 in Eveleth. He was 78.

The Iron resident was born in Hancock, Mich. and graduated in 1941. After school he entered the Navy. He worked for Copper Country Railroad as an accountant, for the Soo Line Railroad. He worked for Pilotac, before working for Seppi Brothers for 18 years.

Carl ran the family farm as well as serving as the Clinton Township and Iron Junction licensed assessor for 25 years. He was the former president of the Cherry-Iron Apostolic Lutheran Church and a member of D.A.V. Kolstad chapter 23.

Survivors also include his wife of 45 years Linda, three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, two brothers, four half-brothers, two half-sisters, his stepmother, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Burial was in Cherry Cemetery.
