James E. Manderfeld, 82, of Springfield, died Sunday, January 25, 2004 at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield.
Visitation will be Tuesday, January 27 from 4:00-8:00 p.m. and Wednesday, January 28 from 7:30-10:00 a.m. at Sturm Funeral Home in Springfield. There will be a Parish Prayer Service at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. There will be a Men's Rosary at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at the church.
Funeral service will be Wednesday, January 28 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Springfield with burial at the St. Raphael's Catholic Cemetery. Father Dennis Labat will officiate. Military Honors by John Watson American Legion Post #257.

James Edward Manderfeld was born December 16, 1921 in Huron, S.D., the son of Nicholas and Florence (Dorn) Manderfeld. He moved to Springfield with his parents at the age of 13 and graduated from Springfield High School in 1939. James attended Machinist Trade School in Minneapolis for two years before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1942. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Springfield and married Bernice Schumacher on June 9, 1948 in Leavenworth.
James worked for Lehrer Lumber and Lampert Lumber until the late 1960's before establishing his own cabinetry business, Manderfeld Millwork. He retired in 1986 but continued his wood-working business at a shop attached to his home.
James was a member of St. Raphael's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, John Watson American Legion Post #257 and enjoyed fishing, bowling, gardening, wood-working and country music.
He is survived by wife, Bernice of Springfield; children, Loren and wife Carol Manderfeld of Bloomington, MN, Janet and husband Robert Erickson of Bloomington, MN, Vincent and wife Nancy Manderfeld of St. Cloud, MN, Rebecca and husband Don Waskosky of Mankato, MN, David Manderfeld of Champlin, MN, Barbara and husband Raymond Wagman of New Hope, MN; eight grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and sisters, Jean and husband Wayne Lungstrom of Las Cruces, NM, Therese and husband Bill Berg of Dekalb, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents, and sisters, Maryann Guzman, Betty Buchan and Lois Glock.

George F. Studtmann, 85, of Courtland died Sunday, January 25, 2004 at the New Ulm Medical Center in New Ulm.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, January 29, 2004 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Courtland with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be 4 - 8 p.m. Wednesday and 7:30 - 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the time of service at church on Thursday.
George is survived by his wife, Velora Studtmann of Courtland; daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra Hans of New Ulm, Brenda and Rodney Stiehm of North Mankato, Linda and Troy Havemeier of Courtland, a step-daughter, Mary Shamblin and her husband, Chester of North Hudson, Wisconsin; eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and by a sister, Erna Stolt.
George was born November 22, 1918 in Courtland Township, Nicollet County to William and Alvina (Meyer) Studtmann. He attended Immanuel Lutheran School in rural Courtland. George farmed on the family farm in Courtland Township, Nicollet County his entire life. He married Velora Stolt on June 1, 1963 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Courtland. George also worked for Hewitt Machine and Manufacturing in Nicollet from 1978 - 1992. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren.
He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Courtland.

E. Marie Windhorn, 83, of 110 1/2 North Minnesota Street in New Ulm died Saturday, January 24, 2004 at her home.
Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 28, 2004 at the United Church of Christ in New Ulm. Burial will be in the New Ulm City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday and from 7:30-8:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. Visitaion will continue for one hour prior to the time of service at the church on Wednesday.
She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Cheryl and Robert "Bob" Beussman, and Jamie and Andy Dalle, all of New Ulm; three grandchildren, Dr. Douglas Beussman, and his wife Victoria of Northfield, Audra Beussman of Albert Lea, and Erin Beussman of Eagan; and her step-great-grandson, Tanner Wakeman; one sister, Lola Boyer of Brooklyn Park; a sister-in-law, Agnes Cheney; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Delmer and Donna Windhorn; an aunt, Blance Cheney of Moose Jaw, Canada; by many nieces and nephews; and by her beloved cat, Ginger. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Stanley on March 19, 2001; sister, Gladys in infancy; brothers, Alvin, Guy, Donald, Evan, and Maurice Cheney; sisters-in-law, Mazie Cheney, Bea Cheney, and Sarah Cheney.
Ethel Marie Windhorn was born January 21, 1921 in Bertha, Minnesota to John and Mary (Tramm) Cheney. She worked for four years in Detroit, Michigan until marrying Stanley G. "Windy" Windhorn in Minneapolis on April 14, 1944. She lived in El Paso, Texas and Mason City, Iowa before moving to New Ulm, where she spent the rest of her life. While in New Ulm, she worked at Woolworths, Pink's, and Herberger's. She was a member of the United Church of Christ where at one time, she sang in the church choir, taught sunday school, was on the church council, and belonged to the friendship circle. She was also a past Brownie leader. Marie was a member of the Turner Hall Frauenverein, belonged to the Brown County Humane Society, and the American Legion Auxillary. The family prefers memorials to the Brown County Humane Society.

Florence Main, 90, of Gaylord, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004 at Gaylord Lakeview Home.
Services are 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004 at American Lutheran Church in Gaylord with burial in Westbrook Cemetery.
Visitation is Saturday at the church, two hours prior to the service.
She is survived by a son, David Main of Gaylord; six grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and a brother, Donald Fowler of Westbrook.
She was born Dec. 12, 1913 to Frank and Elsie (Eide) Fowler in Kankakee, Ill.

Irene Ruhland, 81, of Morton, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 2004 at Bums Manor In Hutchinson
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 30, at St. John's Catholic Church In Morton, with burial in Calvary Cemetery, Morton.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Nelson-Martin Funeral Service in Redwood Falls with a prayer service at 7 p.m., and will continue on Friday from 9-10 a.m. at the Nelson-Martin Funeral Service in Redwood Falls.
She is survived by daughters: Sharon Hennen of Redwood Falls; Debra Zupke of Olivia; Vicki Uecker of Dassel; Mary Neubauer of Bird Island, and Ann Simmons of Hutchinson; sons; Darrell Ruhland of Moose Lake, Dean Ruhland of New London/Spicer, Joe Ruhland of Andover; 25 grandchildren 18 great grandchildren; sisters: Gladys Wohnoutka of Redwood Falls, Lorraine Bartes of Olivia, and Sally Ahrens of Franklin
She was born June 1, 1922 In Renville County to Frank and Catherine (Zetah) Kodet.

Frank Lang, Jr., 88 of Mankato, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004 at his residence.
Funeral Mass is Friday, Jan. 30, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Burial is in Calvary Cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Landkamer-Johnson-Boman Funeral Home with a 6:30 p.m. prayer service. Visitation resumes at the church, one hour before the funeral.
Frank was born Sept. 5, 1915 in Springfield to Frank and Cecelia (Vogel) Lang, Sr. He married Ella C. Schnobrich on June 6, 1939 at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Sanborn. Frank farmed at Springfield and Comfrey before buying his own farm in 1947 at Lamberton. In 1952 he moved to Springfield and worked for Vigornia Feed Mill and the tile plant before moving to Mankato. He then worked for North Star Concrete for six years and was the custodian for St. John the Baptist Catholic Church for over 20 years, retiring in 1981.
A member of the Catholic Order of Foresters since 1936, Frank belonged to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church where he served as an usher for many years. He was also a member of the Circle 8 square dance club. Frank enjoyed dancing with his wife, walking, playing cards, feeding birds, gardening, and going out to eat.
Frank is survived by his wife Ella; two daughters: Judy Reich (Jerry) of Mankato and Rosemary "Rosie" Thede (Bob) of North Mankato; four sons: Robert "Bob" of Elysian, Richard "Dick", David (Shari) all of Mankato and Kenneth (Patsy) of North Mankato; three brothers: Joe, Leo (Margaret) and Raymond (Mary Lou) all of Springfield; 12 grandchildren: Tina Dohrer (JD), Kurt Lang, Kelly Marks (Phillip), Jeremy and Betsy Reich, Megan Peterson (Paul), Leah, Luke, Sam and Ben Lang, Nichole and Michael Thede; four great-grandchildren: Katelynn Tischer, Sydney and Jackson Peterson and Ashley Marks; many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and infant grandson Jacob.

Margaret Menk, 94, of Courtland died Wednesday, January 28, 2004 at the Winthrop Good Samaritan Home in Winthrop.
Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, January 31, 2004 at the Courtland Evangelical Lutheran Church in Courtland with Pastor Melvin Schwark officiating. Burial will be in the Courtland Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery, Courtland Township, Nicollet County.
Visitation will be 4 - 7 p.m. Friday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm and will continue for one hour prior to the time of service at the church on Saturday.
Margaret is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Lowell W. and Johanna Menk of rural Courtland; grandchilderen, Warren Menk, James and Tami Menk, Robert Menk, Deborah and Charles "Chuck" Herlick, Steven and Geraye Menk, Brian and Angie Menk, and Dean and Nicki Menk; great grandchildren, Jade Menk, Kelsey Darnall, Shelby Herlick, Devin Herlick, Britleigh Menk, Alannah Menk, Cortnee Menk, and Brodee Menk; by a sister-in-law, Dorothy Gieseke, a resident at the Luther Memorial Home in Madelia; and by nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Marie (Meyer) Menk; her husband, Emil F. Menk on February 2, 1988; a brother and sister-in-law, Erwin and Bertha Gieseke, a brother, Wilbur Gieseke, and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Arthur and Selma Menk.
Margaret B. Menk, the daughter of Martin and Marie (Meyer) Gieseke was born on March 4, 1909 in Courtland. She attended country school rural Courtland. On June 11, 1930 she was united in marriage to Emil F. Menk at the Courtland Evangelical Lutheran Church in Courtland. After marriage they farmed on the Menk's family farm in Granby Township, Nicollet County until 1932 when they moved to a farm in Courtland Township, Nicollet County. They farmed there until 1975 when they retired but continued to live on the farm. In October of 2000 Margaret moved to the Lafayette Good Samaritan Assisted Living in Lafayette. She lived there until becoming a resident of the Winthrop Good Samaritan Home in Winthop in July of 2002. Margaret was a member of the Courtland Evangelical Lutheran Church, a past member of the Martha Circle at church and was a past Sunday School Teacher.

Gloria Schwerzler, 72, of Sleepy Eye, died on Wednesday, January 28, 2004 at Sleepy Eye Care Center.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, at Faith United Methodist Church, Sleepy Eye. Pastor Donn Rakow will officiate. Interment will be in Home Cemetery.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Friday at Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye and 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Faith United Methodist Church.

Gloria Jean was born on September 18, 1931 in Clements, MN, the daughter of Archie & Lillian (Meierding) Jensen. She grew up and attended school at Morgan Public School for six years and later attended Sleepy Eye Public School where she graduated. After Gloria graduated she worked in the food business from cafes and nursing homes. She was a long standing member of Faith United Methodist Church in Sleepy Eye where she served on the administrative board, Methodist Women and many committees. Gloria loved her grandchildren, great grandchildren and special friend, Delores. She enjoyed going to craft shows, eating out, reading and watching football.
She is survived by her children, Cheryl Bock of Las Vegas, Nev., Nadene and David Dale of Dawson, Lenny and Arvilla Walters of Peculiar, MO, Rick and Mindi Schwerzler of Sleepy Eye, Leigh Reiner of Groton, SD; grandchildren, Liberty Bock of Las Vegas, Nikkie Howie of Las Vegas, Jaime, Stacy and Lindsey Dale of Dawson and Brandie, Rikkie and Krissie Reiner of Groton, SD; great-granddaughters, Taylor and Alexis Howie of Las Vegas, brother, Doug and Kay Jensen of Redwood Falls, and three nieces, Lynn, Lori and Lacy. Gloria was preceded in death by her parents, brother in infancy and two grandsons.

Richard J. Vossen, 84, of Arlington, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004 at Glencoe Regional Health Services.
Services are 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004 at St.Mary's Catholic Church in Arlington. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation is Saturday at the church, 90 minutes prior to the service.
Kolden Funeral Home of Arlington is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
He is survived by his wife, Marie of Arlington; children Mike of West Linn, Ore., Tom of Minneapolis, Ruth Kozitza of North Mankato, Pat of Arlington, Marge Ryan of Minneapolis, Mary Randleman of St. Francis, Susan Conley of Cologne, Carol Jordan of St. Louis Park and John of Kasson; 16 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; a sister, Margaret Vincent of White Bear Lake; brothers Leo of Watkins, Elmer of Cold Spring and Ben of St. Cloud.
He was born on April 16, 1919 in Watkins to John and Catherine (Statz) Vossen. He served in the U.S. Medical Corps from 1942-1945.

Carol Welter, 65, of 1005 N. Valley St., New Ulm, died Tuesday, January 27, 2004 at Methodist Hospital in Rochester.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 31 at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm with Father John Richter celebrating. Burial will follow in the New Ulm City Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and 7 to 10 a.m. Saturday at Schmucker Funeral Service in New Ulm with a parish prayer service scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. The Christian Mothers will recite the rosary at 4:00 p.m. Friday at the church and the St. Elizabeth Society rosary will be 6:30 p.m. Friday at Schmucker Funeral Service.
Carol Ann Clyne, the daughter of John and Anna (Fleck) Clyne, Sr., was born April 15, 1938 in New Ulm, graduating from Cathedral High School in 1957. She married Clyde Anderson on March 2, 1957 at Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm. Carol worked for many years at Pamida in New Ulm, Dr. Martin Luther College, and was last employed by MRCI. Her husband died July 22, 1992. She married Leonard Welter May 30, 1998 at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity. She was a member of Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, Christian Mothers, and the St. Elizabeth Society.
Survivors include her husband, Leonard P. Welter of New Ulm; sons, Terry Anderson and his fiancée Susie Cordes of New Ulm, Danny Anderson and his wife Terri of New Hope; daughters, Lori Hofmeister and her husband Mark of New Ulm, Jane Sturm and her husband Lee of New Ulm, Peggy Anderson of Owatonna; stepsons, Jeff Welter of New London, Dave Welter and his wife Shelly of Milbank, SD, Larry Welter and his wife Kari of Mankato; stepdaughters, Carol Fader and her husband Bob of Willmar, Julie Swoboda and her husband Jerry of Willmar; nine grandchildren; two great grandchildren; fifteen step grandchildren; two step great grandchildren; brothers, Tom Clyne and his wife Kathy of New Ulm, John Clyne, Jr. and his companion Elaine Wurtzberger of New Ulm; sister, Darlene Konakowitz and her husband Richard of Hanska; sisters-in-law, Ruby Moskop of White Bear Lake, Delores Andersen of St. Petersburg, FL, Ona Lee Hoffmann of Nicollet; nieces, nephews, and cousins. William H. 'Bill' Wheaton Sr., 66, of 624 South Front Street in New Ulm died Tuesday, January 27, 2004 at the New Ulm Medical Center in New Ulm.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday, February 2, 2004 at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm with Pastor Garry Grunzke officiating.
Visitation will be 9 - 11 a.m. Monday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm.
Bill is survived by his wife, Kay Wheaton of New Ulm; daughters and sons-in-law, Vicki and Les Versch, Melissa Shellum and her fiancé, Leon Fitterer, all of New Ulm; sons and daughters-in-law, William Wheaton Jr. of Norfolk, Virginia, John and Donna Wheaton of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; 12 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; a sister, Nelda Lomboy of Norwood, Ohio; mother-in-law, Gladys Tutila of Kansas City, Missouri; sisters-in-law, Susan Keyton of Kansas City, Missouri, Cheryl Saari and her husband Darrel of Coon Rapids; brothers-in-law, Don Roa of Fort Mitchell, Kentucky, James Robinson and his wife Lynn of Osseo. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Susie Roa; step-father, John O'Connor; father-in-law, John Tuttila; and a brother-in-law, Tom Keyton.
Bill was born October 5, 1937 in Allardt, Tennessee to Howard and Lois (Owens) Wheaton. He was in the United States Navy from 1956 to 1960 serving as a flight navigator. He married Kay Robinson on March 19, 1960 at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. After marriage he worked for Control Data in Minneapolis for ten years. He then worked for A.O. Smith in Mount Sterling, Kentucky. Bill then owned his own business, Cherokee Wood Products in New Ulm for two years and then worked for Tachtronic Industries in New Ulm until the present time.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the American Heart Association and the New Ulm Medical Center Hospice Program.

Elaine Blaalid, 63, of rural Gibbon died Thursday, January 29, 2004 at her home.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday, February 2, at the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm with Pastor Wayne Laitinen officiating. Burial will be in the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery in Ridgely Township, Nicollet County.
Visitation will be 4 - 8 p.m. Sunday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm and will continue on Monday for one hour prior to the time of service at the church.
Elaine is survived by her husband, DeWayne, of rural Gibbon; daughters and sons-in-law, Julie and Fred Wiethoff of rural Fairfax, Sue Blaalid of Fremont, Wisconsin, Sheri and Tim Krogen of rural Marshall, Dianna and Charlie Wiethoff of rural Gibbon; sons, David Blaalid of rural Gibbon and Daniel Blaalid of New Ulm; grandchildren, Ashley and Cassaundra Krogen; her mother-in-law, Esther Blaalid of New Ulm; a brother-in-law, Glen Blaalid of New Ulm; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Margie and Jerry Buerkle of Spring Valley, Wisconsin, and by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Alvina Dourleyn; a sister-in-law, Bernell Blaalid, and by her father-in-law, Palmer Blaalid.
Elaine Rose Blaalid, the daughter of William "Bill" and Alvina (Steffen) Dourleyn, was born on February 15, 1940 in New Ulm. She graduated from New Ulm Public High School in the class of 1958. On June 22, 1960 she was united in marriage to DeWayne Blaalid at the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ridgely Township, Nicollet County. After marriage they farmed her families farm in West Newton Township. This is the same farm that she lived her entire life on. She worked hard along side her husband on the family dairy farm and enjoyed milking cows for many years. Elaine enjoyed gardening, quilting, and spending time with her family and friends. She was a member of the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm.

Norman 'Jim' Brust, 93, of 812 S. Minnesota St., New Ulm, died Friday, January 30, 2004 at Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm with Father John Richter celebrating. Burial will follow in the New Ulm City Cemetery.
Visitation will be Monday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. Schmucker Funeral Service of New Ulm is handling the arrangements.
Norman, the son of Frederich and Anna (Sellner) Brust, was born October 15, 1910 in New Ulm. He married Helen Annen in Grand Island, NE on May 30, 1939. He was employed by various firms in road construction, primarily operating the road grader. Norman loved many forms of hunting, especially deer, pheasant, duck, coon, mushroom and ginseng. He also spent many days fishing at nearby rivers and lakes. He treasured his grandchildren and great grandchildren and enriched them with many of his hunting stories. He enjoyed sitting in his screen porch and having a beer with friends and neighbors.
Norman is survived by his wife of 64 years, Helen; a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Howard Zins; three grandchildren, Heidi Halvorson, Lisa Portner, and Laura Reinarts; great grandchildren, Jenna, Amber, Brittany and Cole; by a brother, Marvin Brust of Wadena; and a sister, Arlene Buck of Minneapolis. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, David Besemer; brothers, Harold, Clarence, James, and William; and sisters Vera, Helen, Lillian, and Lucille.

Connie Bushard, 51, of rural New Ulm died Saturday, January 31, 2004 at her home.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 3, 2004 at the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm with burial in the New Ulm City Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4 - 9 p.m. Monday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm and will continue for one prior to the time of service at church on Tuesday.
Connie is survived by her husband, Gordon "Gordie" Bushard of rural New Ulm; her mother, DeLila Maidl of New Ulm; daughter and son-in-law, Andrea and Matt Hauge of New Ulm; son, Beau Bushard of New Ulm; grandson, Noah Hauge of New Ulm; sister, Lori Oropeza of New Ulm; brother, Gary Maidl of New Ulm; mother-in-law, Marcella Bushard of New Ulm; sisters-in-law, Lois Schreyer of New Ulm, Connie Kloeckl of rural Hanska, Judy Fullerton and her husband, Rick of Chaska; brothers-in-law, Greg Bushard and his wife Agnes and Ron Bushard and his wife Linda, all of New Ulm; and by aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her father, Harold "Red" Maidl on May 27, 2000; father-in-law, Stanley Bushard on June 10, 2000; and a brother-in-law, Randal Kloeckl.
She was born Constance Jean Maidl on March 5, 1952 in New Ulm to Harold and DeLila (Asmus) Maidl. She graduated from New Ulm High School in 1970 then from the Johnson Beauty School inMankato. She then worked for Besemer's Beauty Shop in New Ulm and then owned her own business, "Connie's Best Little Hair House". She married Gordon Bushard on September 23, 1972 at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm.
Connie was a member of the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm, South Central Hair Dresser's Association, and the American Legion Post #132 Auxiliary in New Ulm.
