Jacolyn Jean Walter passed away at the age of 54 in Peoria, Ariz. on Jan. 20 under Hospice Care after a lengthy illness. A memorial service was held on Sunday, Jan. 26, at the Heritage Funeral Chapel in Peoria.
Jackie, as she was known to her friends and family, was born on Nov. 22, 1949 to Walter and Bea Lowinske in Sleepy Eye. The family first moved to Hutchinson in 1954, where Jackie attended grade school, and then in 1962, the family moved New Ulm, where she graduated from high school. Tom Walter and Jackie were married in 1969 and three children were born from this union: Heather and husband (Brian) Ertle, Ryan and special friend (Carrie), and Tessa and fiance (Matt). They are survived along with her parents, Walter and Bea, two sisters, Joleen and Jan, and three brothers, Jeff, Jay, and Jim, along with five grandchildren.

Leona Cordes, 98, of 223 N. Payne St., New Ulm, died Wednesday, January 28, 2004 at Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Wed-nesday, Feb. 4 at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm with Rev. Timothy Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service on Wednesday at the church. Schmucker Funeral Service of New Ulm is handling arrangements.
Leona Vorwerk, the daughter of Paul and Dora (Niebuhr) Vorwerk, Sr., was born December 10, 1905 in Gibbon, where she spent her youth and attended school. She was united in marriage to Albert Cordes March 6, 1928 at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm. They made their home in New Ulm. Leona was a homemaker her entire married life and was astute at handicraft work. Her husband died in 1994. She was a dedicated member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church. Leona was an active member of her card club until this past year. She became a resident of Oak Hills Living Center in October 2003.
Survivors include her daughter, Hazel Schmidt and her husband Harlan of Kasota; son, Donald Cordes and his wife Jeanne of New Ulm; seven grandchildren, Michael Schmidt and his wife Patrice, Peter Schmidt, Andrew Schmidt, Ricky Cordes and his wife Deb, Randy Cordes and his wife Sandy, Ronny Cordes and his wife Sue, Rusty Cordes; twelve great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; brother, Wilmar Vorwerk and his wife Eunice of New Ulm; nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives. In addition to her husband, Leona was preceded in death by her grandson, Thomas Schmidt; two brothers in infancy, and two brothers, Eugene Vorwerk and Paul Vorwerk, Jr.
Memorials are preferred to the donor's choice.

Alfred H. 'Sarge' Schroeder, age 77 of Fairfax, passed away on Sunday, February 1st, at the Fairfax Community Home, after a long and courageous battle with ALS.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, at 1 p.m., at St. John Lutheran Church, in Fairfax. Interment will be at the church cemetery in Cairo Twp., Renville Co. Full military rites will be conducted by the Fairfax Honor Guard.
Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday, and 7:30-10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, at the Hauser-Hantge Funeral Chapel in Fairfax. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the time of services at the church on Wednesday.
Alfred Henry Schroeder was born July 15, 1926, in New Ulm, MN to Henry and Olga (Seidl) Schroeder. On August 12, 1948, Alfred married Elda Heine at the St. John Lutheran Church parsonage in Fairfax.
Alfred attended Dist. #26 country school. He served in the U. S. Army from 1945-1946, serving in Guam and Philippines. Alfred was a lifetime member of the Fairfax VFW Post #8459 and Fairfax American Legion Post #205. Alfred farmed in Severance Twp, Sibley Co., until retiring in 1979, when they moved into Fairfax. He continued working for Farmer's Co-op Creamery and assisted local area farmers until retiring in 2000. Alfred entered the Fairfax Community Home in May, 2003, when he needed assistance with his daily care.
Alfred was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church in Fairfax. For many years, Alfred played drums with area old time bands including, Don Morris and the Jolly Germans, Bob Milbrett Band, Johnny Helget Band, Christy Hengel and several others.
Alfred was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Fred and Ida Heine; brother-in-law, Sigmund Lehrke; sister-in-law, Arabella Graf, and great-nephew, Ryan Otto.
Alfred is survived by his: wife, Elda Schroeder of Fairfax, MN; daughters, Linda (Jim) Schroeder of New Ulm, and Nancy (Don) Brooks of Fairfax; sons, Bob (Elaine) Schroeder of Belle Plaine, MN, and Gary Schroeder of Fairfax, MN; grandchildren, Steven and Jeana Schroeder, Katie Schroeder, Glen and Neil Brooks, Brian and Michael Schroeder; a great-grandson, Zachary Schroeder; step-grandchildren, Jimmy Jo and Kim Schroeder, Jenny Schroeder, Jim and Justine Buboltz, John and Christine Buboltz, Jackie and Darron Dalueg; eight step-great-grandchildren; a sister, Lorna Lehrke of Gaylord, MN; brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Alfred Graf of Fairfax, and Arden and Shirley Heine of Chewelah, Wash.

Arleen H. Schumacher, 86, of Springfield died on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004 at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield.
Servicew will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, at St. Raphael's Catholic Church, with interment will be at St. Paul's Catholic Cemetery in Comfrey.
Visitation will be on 4-8 p.m.. today and 7:30-10 a.m. Wednesday at the Sturm Funeral Home in Springfield. There will be a parish prayer service at 6 p.m. today at the funeral home and a CCW Rosary on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Springfield.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary Ellen Berg of Clements; four grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.
Arleen Hulda Schumacher was born Feb. 3, 1917, to Louis and Elsie (Becker) Seavert near Butterfield.

Lewis J. Haller, 85, of Grand Junction, Colo., and formerly of New Ulm, died Jan. 28, 2004.
The funeral service is 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 7, at Callahan Edfast Mortuary Chapel in Grand Junction.
He is survived by his wife Michiko Haller of Grand Junction; daughter Marla Caywood of Clearfield, Utah; sons, Daniel Haller of Adelaide, Australia, James Haller of Steamboat Springs, Colo., Mark Haller of Hudson, Wis.; seven grandchildren and three great- grandchildren; brother Herbert Haller of Sun City West, Ariz.; and stepchildren, Daniel Watson of Wayzata, and Debora Leska of Barrington Hills, Ill.; and four stepgrandchildren.
Lewis was born on May 24, 1918 in Duluth, Minn., to Otto and Martha (Deischel) Haller.

Cecelia Welsch, 94, of Lucan. died Monday, Feb. 2, 2004, at Wabasso Health Care Center in Wabasso.
Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m., Friday, Feb. 6, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Lucan with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 9-10:45 a.m., Friday at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Lucan. The Sunset Burial Association of Echo and Wabasso is handling the arrangements.
She was born Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1909, in Granite Rock Township, Redwood County, Minnesota to John G. And Frances (Plaetz) Wurscher.

Norman H. Wieland, 83, of New Ulm, died Monday, February 2, 2004, at the Luther Memorial Home in Madelia.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m., Thursday, February 5, at the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm with burial in the New Ulm City Cemetery. Full military honors will be conducted at the cemetery by the New Ulm Veterans Organizations.
Visitation will be 4 - 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 7:30 - 10:00 a.m. Thursday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the services at the church on Thursday.
Norman is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Norma and Bill Hanson of Lake Crystal, Gloria and Clifford Fenske of San Martin, California, Joyce and Ron Rodewald of New Ulm; sons and daughter-in-law, Norman A. Jr. and Cindy Wieland of Hanska, Charles "Chuck" Wieland and his fiancee, Debra Hippert and her children, Nathan and Tyler all of New Ulm; grandchildren, Travis, Ryan, Timothy, Chet, Jenna, Katie, Amy, Christine and Jamie; sisters and brothers-in-law, Vera Meredith of New Ulm, Alyce and George Robinson of Olewien, Iowa, Laura and Harold Richter, Hilda and Leonard Breu all of New Ulm; brothers and sisters-in-law, Vernon and Darlene Wieland, Harold and Joanne Wieland, Jim and Bea Wieland all of New Ulm; nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Linda Wieland on November 10, 2003; grandsons, Ross Hanson and Paul Peterson; sisters, Viola Rockvam, Florence Ginkel, and a sister, Lois Wieland in infancy; brother, Willard Wieland, and a brother, Alfred Wieland in infancy; four nephews and one niece.
Norman Harry Wieland was born on June 21, 1920, in New Ulm, to Fred and Ella (Meyer) Wieland. He married Linda Tews on October 28, 1941 in Hanska. From 1942 to 1945 he served during WWII in the African and European Theaters. Norman and Linda operated the Brown County Home for the Aged in New Ulm for fifteen years and then farmed in the New Ulm Area for twenty five years. He then worked at 3M in New Ulm for eighteen years. After he retired in 1982 they enjoyed traveling to the south and west coasts. He was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm, and the Seifert-Bianchi American Legion Post #132 in New Ulm.
In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials be given to donor's choice.

Zeda Bickhardt t, 91, of Morgan, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at her home of cancer.
Services are 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 7, at United Methodist Church In Morgan. Spring burial will be in Morgan City Cemetery.
Visitation is one hour before services Saturday at the church.

She is survived by son Philip of Morgan; daughters Kathy Pelkey of Coon Rapids, Sue Wennerberg of Kerkhoven; and eight grandchildren.
She was born Aug. 7, 1912, in Clinton, Minn., to Fred and Mae (Chase) Green.

Kathy Ebbers, 63, of Hector, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, near St. Cloud.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, Feb. 7, at 10:30 a.m. at the St. John's Catholic Church in Hector.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m., Friday, at the Hughes Funeral Home in Hector with a 5 p.m. rosary and a 7: p.m. prayer service; and continues one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.
Kathy is survived by her husband Ronald Ebbers, of Hector, daughter Kathryn Grieger of Waverly; son Jim Ebbers of Hector; and six grandchildren.
Mary Kathleen Ebbers was born Nov. 22, 1940, in Glencoe, Minn., to Ross and May (Campbell) Chisholm

Russell Marron, 78, of Mound, died Feb. 2, 2004.
Memorial service is noon, Saturday, Feb. 7, at Huber Funeral Home, 1801 Commerce Blvd., Mound.
Visitation is one hour before the service.
He is survived by his wife, Anna Belle; children, Rebecca Sell, Roderick O'Marron, Patrick, Mike, and Mary Beth Wersal; stepchildren, Juli Lieske, Sharon Hooge; eight grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
He was born on June 11, 1925, to Roderick and Viola (Wagner) Marron in Springfield, Minn.

Margaret V. (Sowers) Mielke, 78, of Sleepy Eye, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at Franklin Health Care Center in Franklin.
Services will be 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 7, at Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye, with burial in Home Cemetery.
Visitation will be 12:30-2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Survivors include her sons, Rev. Marlon Mielke of Milltown, Wis., Brent Mielke of Adrian, Bradd Mielke of Sleepy Eye, and Myron Mielke of Lancaster, Calif., 11 grandchildren; and a sister Maybelle Sowers of Sleepy Eye.
She was born Oct. 7, 1925, in Groton, S.D. to Hiram and Lydia (Kruger) Sowers.

Luella Olson, 94, of Winthrop, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004, at the Winthrop Good Samaritan Center.
Funeral services are 2 p.m., Friday, Feb. 6, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, in Winthrop.
Visitation will be one hour prior, to the time of services, at the church, on Friday.
Burial will be in the Winthrop Cemetery, at a later date.
She is survived by her sister Doris Thornburg of Lakefield.
She was born on May 16, 1909, in Alfsborg Township, Sibley County, Minn., to John and Ida (Swanson) Olson.

Thomas Ramon Sandtorf, 48, of Champlin, formerly of New Ulm, died Wednesday Jan. 28, 2004, at Fairview University Medical Center.
He is survived by wife Carol; sons, Joshua and Steven; and daughter Sara.
Services were held on Friday Jan. 30, at Washburn-McReavy Funeral Home in Hopkins.
Burial will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, Feb. 13, at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
He was born Feb. 13, 1955. He served four years in the Marine Corps.

Ethel A. Ames, 93, of Springfield, died Thursday, Feb, 5, 2004, at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield.
Service is 10:30 a.m., Monday, Feb. 9, at St. John Lutheran Church, with burial in Springfield City Cemetery.
Visitation is 9-10:30 a.m., Monday, at the church.
Arrangements are with the Sturm Funeral Home in Springfield.
She is survived by her sons, Bradford Ames of Crookston, and Tom Ames of St. Charles; five grandchildren; brother Allen Anderson of Crosby; and a sister Carolyn of Maryland
She was born on Sept. 12, 1910, to Hans and Anna (Gullberg) Anderson.

Erna Balbach, 83, of Springfield, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004, at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield.
Services are 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, at Springfield United Methodist Church, with burial in Springfield Cemetery.
Anderson-Schmidt-LaCanne Funeral Service handled arrangements.
She is survived by sisters, Esther Gieseke of Springfield and Delores Sater of St. Louis Park; and brothers, Walter Schenk of Springfield and Armin Schenk of Butterfield.
Erna Balbach was born March 9, 1920, in Springfield to Ed and Emma (Kettner) Schenk.

Jane Lund, 65, of Redwood Falls, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004, at Wood Dale Home in Redwood Falls.
Services will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, at Redwood Valley Funeral Home in Redwood Falls with burial in Beaver Falls Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and will continue on Monday one hour prior to the service.
She is survived by her son Loni Lund; one granddaughter; and sisters June Lehman of Morton, Jean Sherman of Franklin, and Joan Robertson of Delano.
Jane Tena Lund was born Aug. 13, 1938, in New Ulm, to Francis Fredrick and Bernice Helen (Storch) Robertson.
