Bernice Schumacher, 86, of Springfield died Monday, Feb. 23, 2004, at her home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 26, at St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Springfield, with burial in St. Raphael's Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. today and 7:30-10 a.m. Thursday at the Sturm Funeral Home in Springfield. There will be a parish prayer service on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the funeral home and a CCW rosary on Thursday at 10 a.m. at the church.
She is survived by her sons, Dennis Schumacher of Comfrey, Gary Schumacher of Lamberton, Dean Schumacher of Lamberton; a daughter Karen Dockendorf of Cold Spring; 11 grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; five great-grandchildren; seven stepgreat-grandchildren; and sisters, Elvera Schumacher of Springfield and Marie Grochow of New Ulm.
Bernice Ann Schumacher was born Sept. 9, 1917, in Stately Township, Brown County, to Andrew and Gertrude (Eickholt) Schunk.

Andrew Mathiowetz, 84, of Morgan, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2004, at Gil-Mor Manor in Morgan.
Services are 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 28, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Morgan. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m., Friday with a 5:30 p.m. combined rosary and 7 p.m. parish prayer service at the church and one hour before the service Saturday at the church.
He is survived by his wife Veronica of Morgan; children, James Mathiowetz, Myron Mathiowetz and David Mathiowetz, all of Morgan, Diane Nelson of Lakeville, Al Mathiowetz of Mounds View, Virgil Mathiowetz of New Brighton, Virginia Nikolai of Madison, Sharon Erickson of Le Sueur, Loraine Roger of Minneapolis, Mark Mathiowetz of Lakeville, Margaret Stoterau of St. Cloud and Melanie Mathiowetz of St. Louis Park; 29 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sister Anna Zinniel of Winnebago; and brothers, Martin of Redwood Falls and Lawrence of Richland, Wash.
He was born May 31, 1919, in Eden Township, Brown County, Minnesota to Frank G. and Margaretha (Rauch) Mathiowetz.

Mathew L. Turbes, 98, of Springfield, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004, at Gil-Mor Manor in Morgan.
Services will be held at St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Springfield on Saturday, Feb. 28, at 10:30 a.m. The clergy will be Father Dennis Labat. Interment will be at the St. Raphael's Catholic Cemetery in Springfield.

Mathew Louis Turbes was born Oct. 25, 1905, in Brookville Township, the son of Hubert and Mary (Grausam) Turbes. He attended country school in Brookville Township. On Oct. 26, 1932, he married Eleanor Lang in Springfield. Mathew was a long-time resident of the Springfield area. The couple farmed in Stately Township for 40 years and later moved into Springfield in 1973. In 1994 they moved to Lake Villa Marie Apartments in Sleepy Eye and in April of 2003 moved to Gil-Mor Manor in Morgan. Mathew was a member of St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Springfield, a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, and a past member of the Springfield Senior Citizens. He enjoyed gardening, playing cards, and visiting with people. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family of which they have many fond memories.
He is survived by his wife Eleanor S. Turbes of Gil-Mor Manor; daughter Angela and husband Leander Rosenhammer of Mankato; son Glen and wife Kathy Turbes of Willmar; grandchildren, Cheryl and husband Fritz Bredenbeck of Edina, Brian Rosenhammer and fiancee Kathy White of Richfield, and Deb and husband Joe Jensen of Elk River; brothers, Sylvester and wife Myrtle Turbes of Sleepy Eye, Victor and wife Doris Turbes of Maple Plain, and James and wife Cyrilla Turbes of Springfield; sisters-in-law, Gladys Lang of Springfield, Mary Turbes of Sleepy Eye and Annabelle Turbes of Redwood Falls; and by many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Leo, Edward, Florian, George, and Raymond; and a sister Loretta Wenisch.

Rose M. Battig, 97, of Longmont, Colo., and formerly of Sleepy Eye, died on Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004, at the Life Care Center in Longmont, Colo.
Funeral services are 11 a.m., Monday, March 1, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye with Pastor Tim Grams officiating. Burial will be in the Home Cemetery in Sleepy Eye.
Visitation will be from 10: a.m. until the time of service at the church on Monday.
Minnesota Valley Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Rose is survived by son, Marvin Battig of Youngtown, Ariz.; and daughter, Muriel Current and her husband Harold of Longmont, Colo.; grandchildren, Barbara Battig, Mark Battig, Merry Andreas, Sandra DiNatale, and Jeanie Vela; and by great-grandchildren, Paul, Katie, Daniel, Sam, Timothy, Johanna, and Elizabeth Battig, Matthew and Justin DiNatale and Ryan, Racheal, and Emily Vela.
She was preceded in death by her husband and her brothers and sisters, Martin, Ewald, Helmut, Arthur, Gerhard, Harry, Herbert, Benny, Arnold, Irene, Eleanor, Edna, and Freda.
Rose was born on May 1, 1906, in Morgan Township, Redwood County, to Fred and Mary (Daluge) Hasse. She married Fred W. Battig on June 20, 1923, in New Ulm. She spent most of her life in the Sleepy Eye vicinity until 1978 when she moved to Longmont, Colo., to be near her daughter and family. Over the years, Rose was employed at several different jobs in Sleep Eye. She loved children and did volunteer work in her church's Lutheran school lunch program in Sleepy Eye. Rose enjoyed her family and family gatherings. She also enjoyed boating, fishing and traveling. She was a member of Our Savior's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Longmont, Colo., and was a past member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye.

Ruth E. Clyne, 80 of 413 5th North in New Ulm, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004, at the New Ulm Medical Center.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm with burial in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m., Friday and 7:30-10 a.m., Saturday at Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. There will be a parish prayer service at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Ruth is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Mary "Eightball" Hogen of New Ulm, Connie "Chico" and James "Chick" Heck of New Ulm, Diane "Termite" and Rich Murphy of New Ulm, Linda Clyne of New Ulm and her special friend, John Schoof of Essig, Monica "Weiner" and Danny Gieseke of New Ulm, Roxanne "Tuni" and Harlan Schwecke of Gibbon, and Julie "Tutsie" and Pat Schugel of New Ulm; a son and daughter-in-law, Randy "Sam" and Jo Clyne of New Ulm; a son-in-law, Le Roy Rewitzer of New Ulm; 18 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; sisters, Deloris Matison of Lakeville, and Eileen Solyntjes of Springfield; sisters-in-law, Marie Clyne, Betty Clyne, and Hilda Clyne, all of New Ulm.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Martin Clyne on Feb. 9, 1960; a daughter, Marlene "Rusty" Rewitzer on Nov. 15, 2003; and a grandson, Danny Clyne on January 11, 1980.
Ruth was born on Aug. 16, 1923, in New Ulm to Joseph and Rose (Schreiner) Guendner. She attended school at St. Raphael's in Springfield. On March 5, 1940, she married Martin Clyne at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm. After the death of Martin, she worked at Fingerhut, Ben Franklin, Highland Manor, and 3M until retiring in 1984. Ruth enjoyed sewing, crocheting, puzzles, and word searches. She loved the Concord Singers, the New Ulm German festivals, music in the park, and most of all, spending time at home with her kids and grandkids. Ruth was well known for making the best flannel pajamas and baby bibs. She was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm.

Mabel Gehrke, 83, of Brownton, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004, at Glencoe Regional Health Services in Glencoe.
Services are 2 p.m., Saturday, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Stewart, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 5-8 p.m., Friday; and 8-11 a.m., Saturday, at Hantge Funeral Chapel in Brownton; and continues one hour before services at the church.

Joan Ann (Ganske) Jensen Jensen, 71, of Springfield, died on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004, at Springfield Medical Center.
Service will be held at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Sanborn on Saturday, Feb. 28, at 3 p.m. The Clergy will be Father Phil Schotzko. Burial will be in Sanborn City Cemetery
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m., Friday, at Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye, and 1:30-3 p.m., Saturday, at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Sanborn. There will be a parish prayer service at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home in Sleepy Eye.

Joan Ann (Ganske) Jensen was born on Aug. 7, 1932, in Sleepy Eye, the daughter of John and Ann (Kachelmeier) Ganske. She grew up in Sleepy Eye graduating from St. Mary's High School in 1950. Joan married Kenneth Jensen on Aug. 30, 1952, in Oceanside, Calif. The couple made their home in rural Sanborn where they farmed and raised their family. In 1991 Joan went to work as a cashier at Jackpot Junction where she was a "mother" to many of her co-workers and friends. She helped raise her grandchildren and loved to take care of her family. Joan was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Sanborn, the Christian Mothers and the CCW. She was a past member of the Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing cards, fishing, cooking, knitting, golfing, gambling, vacations, and baking chocolate chip cookies. Joan really enjoyed entertaining her family and especially loved all her grandchildren from Seb, age 29, on down to Melanie, 9 months.
Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Jensen of Springfield, children, Kenny (Jean) Jensen, Jr. of Wanda, Kevin (Riki) Jensen of Lakeville, Kurt (Pamela) Jensen of Lamberton, Mary (Myron) Vogt of Sanborn, Marci (Rick) Heid of St. Cloud, Kriss Jensen (Shana Jackson) of Marshall and Maureen Janssen of St. Cloud, 26 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brothers, Lyle (Myrna) Ganske of Brea, Calif., Tom (Karen) Ganske of Sleepy Eye, Jim (Maxine) Ganske of Sleepy Eye; sisters, MaryJane Koessler of New Ulm, Maureen (Pete) DeRosler of Burlington, Wis., and Collette Van De Bogart of Elkhorn, Wis.,; and brother-in-law, Albert Flor of New Richland

Eileen L. Black, 62, of rural Fairfax died Wednesday, February 25, 2004 at the Rio Grande Regional Hospital in McAllen, Texas.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Gibbon with Pastor Richard J. Kuckhahn officiating. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Gibbon.
Visitation will be 3 - 5 p.m. Sunday and from 7:30 until 11 a.m. on Monday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in Gibbon and will continue on Monday for one hour prior to the time of service at the church.
Eileen is survived by a daughter and son-in-law Joleen and Robert Pitts of Big Lake; a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Kelly Sander of Alexandria, four beautiful grandchildren, Samantha, Jesse, Jacob, and Shane. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Eileen Lenore Black, the daughter of Reinhold and Lenora (Jacobson) Black was born on November 22, 1941 in New Ulm. She was baptized, confirmed, and married all at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Gibbon. Eileen graduated from the Fairfax High School. After high school she continued her education at the Swedish Hospital in Minneapolis graduating from there as an X-ray Technician in 1961. On May 4, 1962 she was united in marriage to Howard J. Sander at the Immanuel Lutheran Church. Eileen was very active during her lifetime. In 1991 she moved to her parents farm in rural Fairfax where she resided up until the time of her death. She enjoyed life on the farm doing field work, gardening, fishing, and growing flowers. For many years Eileen had spent winters in Texas where she was when she died. Eileen was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Gibbon. In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorial to the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Gibbon.

Alvin T. Anderson, 80, of Hanska, died Friday, February 27th at Hillcrest Health Care Center in Mankato after a lengthy illness with cancer.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the United Church of Christ in New Ulm with Rev. Henry Campbell officiating.
Burial will follow in the New Ulm City Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Monday and 7 to 8 a.m. Tuesday at Schmucker Funeral Service in New Ulm, and one hour prior to service at the church.
Alvin Torvold Anderson, the son of Kristofer and Marie (Mundal) Anderson, was born October 1, 1923 at the family home in Hanska. He attended rural district 54 school and Hanska High School, graduating in 1942. Al was united in marriage to Marlys Rolloff November 21, 1945 at the former Friedens Church in New Ulm. Together, they farmed in the Hanska area for many years. He also sold Cargill Seeds and was the manager of the Legion Lanes bowling alley in Hanska for 23 years. They moved into Hanska in 1976. He had served on the Hanska School Board, Creamery Board, and Hanska Business Association.
Survivors include his wife, Marlys; son, Wayne Anderson and his wife Mary Gayle of Mankato; stepdaughter, Yvonne Lyons of Nashville, TN; five grandchildren, Michele (Kevin) Butt, Micheal (Michelle) Anderson, Wade (Nikki) Anderson, Chad Anderson, Troy Lyons; six great grandchildren; one niece and three nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a half-sister, Pearl Glaseman.

Ernest 'Ernie' Ohland Sr., 95, of New Ulm died Friday, February 27, 2004 at the Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm.
Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 3, 2004 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Gibbon with pastor Richard J. Kuckhahn officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be for one hour prior to the time of service at the church on Wednesday. Minnesota Valley Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Ernie is survived by his wife, Esther Ohland of New Ulm; daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Marv Jenkins
of Woodbury; son and daughter-in-law, Ernest, Jr. and Chris Ohland of Hanska; ten grandchildren; and ninteen great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Sandra Jane Kramer in 1994; and by brothers, Fred, Edward, Arthur and Alfred Ohland; and sisters, Emma Hoppenstedt, Bertha Ohland and Anna Blosjo.
Ernest Henry Ohland was born on August 16, 1908 in Hamburg to William and Sophie (Drier) Ohland. On August 6, 1934 he married Esther A. Heckenliable in Minneapolis. After marriage they farmed in Gibbon until 1970 when they move to Las Cruces, New Mexico and lived there for ninteen years. In 1990 they moved to New Ulm. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Gibbon.

Amor Seemann, 93, of New Ulm died Thursday, February 26, 2004 at the Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm.
Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 3, 2004 at the New Ulm City Cemetery.
Amor is survived by his wife, Cora Seemann a resident at Ridgeway on German Street in New Ulm; a daughter and a son-in-law, Jane Christensen and Jim Krzmarzick of Comfrey; sons and daughters-in-law, William and Joanne Seemann of Mesa, Arizona, and Dennis and Claudia Seemann of Edina; eight grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; and one great grandson; brothers and sisters-in-law, George and Lillian Seemann of Gaylord, and Carl and Margaret Seemann of Bemidji. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Steve Seemann in Vietnam in 1970; and a brother, Raymond Seemann in WWII.
Amor was born on January 18, 1911 in Henderson, Minnesota to Florenz and Laura (Witzany) Seemann. He attended Gaylord High School and then the Mankato Business School. On April 25, 1936, he married Cora Weine at the Parish Priest House in Gibbon. He worked numerous lumber company managerial positions for fifty years. He loved hunting, fishing, and his family. Amor was a member of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Minnesota Conservation Volunteer Magazine. Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm is handling the arrangements.

Dolores J. Ebnet, 79, of Springfield died Friday, Feb. 27, 2004, at the Springfield Medical Center.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m., Tuesday, and 7:30-10 a.m., Wednesday at the Sturm Funeral Home in Springfield. There will be a parish prayer service on at 7 p.m., Tuesday, at the Sturm Funeral Home in Springfield and a CCW rosary at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church.

Dolores Julia Weiss was born south of Leavenworth, Minn., on the family farm on July 13, 1924, to Clement and Philomenia (Groebner) Weiss. She was baptized at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye and confirmed at St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Springfield. Dolores attended country school in Mulligan, Iberia, Dist. 59, and Dotson. She attended fourth grade at St. Mary's Catholic School in Sleepy Eye and eighth grade at St. Raphael's Catholic School in Springfield and graduated in 1939. Following the death of her mother in 1934, she helped her dad bring up three sisters and a brother. She never stopped missing her daddy after his death. Dolores married Arthur Vincent Lang on Jan. 28, 1948. To this union, two daughters and two sons were born. Her husband died on Feb. 24, 1955, following a train-truck accident. She married Albert L. Ebnet on Jan. 23, 1958, and they had one daughter and one son. Dolores enjoyed her family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives, and friends. She enjoyed sewing clothes for her siblings and family, making quilts, and working with the craft ladies at St. Raphael's Church. She also made dolls and enjoyed collecting dolls and teddy bears. She always kept the shelves full of canned goods from the garden.
She is survived by her husband Albert L. Ebnet of Springfield; daughters, Le Ann and husband Ron Johnson of New Ulm, Marietta and husband Dan Kinzer of Cold Spring, and Lori and husband Brian Gramentz of New Ulm; sons, David and wife Vicki Lang of Brooklyn Park, Arthur Lang of Maplewood, and Steven Ebnet and special friend Aimee Stang of Star Prairie, Wis.; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sisters, Angeline and husband Lowell Steffl of Comfrey, Bernice and husband Robert Rose of Morgan, and Mary Jane and husband Cyril Windschitl of Springfield; a brother Clarence and wife Irene Weiss of Comfrey; sisters-in-law, Esther Ebnet of Wabasso, Leona Meidl and Cleopha Weiss both of Sleepy Eye, Margaret Zenk of Olivia, Kathleen Lang of Springfield and Caroline and husband Fred Welsch of Springfield; an aunt Julia Groebner Streich of Springfield; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Arthur Lang Sr.

Pearl Reyo, 78, of Gibbon, died Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004, at the St. Peter Community Health Care Center in St. Peter.
Services are 11 a.m., Saturday, March 6, 2004, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Gibbon with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Friday and from 7:30-9 a.m., Saturday, at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in Gibbon. Visitation will continue for one hour before the service Saturday at the church.

Clementine Schroeder went to her Heavenly home on Sunday, February 29, at age 86.
Services are 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 2, 2004, at Pilgrim Funeral Home in Madelia.
Visitation is one hour before the service at the funeral home.
Clem was born to Charles E. and Precious Dietz on July 25, 1918 in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota. At the age two her father died. When Clem was four, her mother married Walter A Dietz. She was the fourth daughter born into a family that eventually had a total of eight sisters and brothers.
Several years after graduation from Sanborn High School, she married Robert "Bob" Schroeder. They courted through high school, and on July 8, 1942, were married in Orlando, Florida, where her sweetheart was stationed for a time in the Army. Their daughter, Judy was born in October the following year. When Bob shipped out to the war in Europe, Clem came back to Minnesota to wait his return. It was a long train ride with a young infant daughter.
In 1948, Bob and Clem along with their daughter moved to Madelia where in 1950 their son, Jan was born. Bob barbered until January 2004, and Clem worked at the pea plant, Siebert's Royal Blue Foods, Tony Downs Foods and retired out of Zimmermann's Variety Store. She became Bob's secretary at the barbershop which was then in the family home at 12 East Main Street. At the end of January 2004, Bob and Clem moved to Oak View Apartments in New Ulm, Minnesota where God's appointed time came with her husband, children, grandchildren and a niece at her side.
Clem loved spending time with her family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives, and friends. She enjoyed attending school programs, dance recitals, soccer games and family vacations at the lake. At the family functions, Clem was famous for her pea salad and Jell-o salads. She would always put her family first. She was a member of the Christian's Women's Club in St. James. She was past member of the Madelia First Baptist Church and currently was attending the Lake Crystal Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Ruth and Bernice.
Surviving Clem is her loving husband Bob, daughter, Judy Michniewicz (Robert) of Madelia, MN and son, Jan (Judy) of Missoula. MT, 2 brothers, Wayne (Elizabeth) Dietz, Anoka, Burton (Betty) Dietz, Raleigh NC and three sisters, Remona Peterson, Springfield, MN, Charlotte Starken, Rochester, MN and Roberta (Gilbert) Ihnen, Lamberton, MN; eight grandchildren, Bob, Brenda, Jeff, Lori, Adam, Justin, Sarah and Bethany and nine great-grandchildren Joseph, Jenna, Nic, Kaitlyn, Krista, Lukas, Erika, Kayley and Matthew and many nieces and nephews.
