Reverend Boyd Ellefson
Reverend Boyd Ellefson, who graduated from Proctor High School, died Fri., Dec. 21, 2001, in Clinton, Iowa.

The Thomson, Ill. resident was born in Duluth, the son of Boyd Kermit and Ida June (Graham) Ellefson. He attended the University of Minnesota, Duluth; graduated from the University of Dubuque, Iowa; and received a Master of Divinity Degree from the Dubuque Theological Seminary. After high school, Boyd married Judith Lenore Endresen. Boyd married Barbara Reck in 1983 in Sanford, Florida.

Boyd had a special place in his heart for small country churches and served parishes in six states including Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Carolina and Florida. Boyd served in the Ministry for 43 years, he was the Pastor for the York Community Church, Thomson. Boyd also served as a Pastor with Mercy Hospice, Clinton, Iowa. He was a member of the Thomson Lions Club and the Thomson Rotary Club. Boyd enjoyed fishing and the outdoors.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara, of Thomson, a daughter, Michele Lenore (Mark) Sundstrom and four grandchildren, Jared, Kimberly, Megan and Nicholas, Proctor; a brother, Daniel John (Susan) Ellefson of Duluth; a nephew, David Boyd Ellefson of Littleton, Colo; and a niece, Melissa June Ellefson of Superior; step-grandchlidren Jessica Sundstrom, Duluth, Amy Haedrich, Saginaw and Markelle Sundstrom, Proctor and three step-great-grandchildren. Boyd is preceded in death by a son, Jonathon Graham Ellefson; and his parents.

A memorial fund has been established in Boyd’s name.

Charlene Audrey Larsen White
Services were held over the weekend for Charlene Audrey Larsen White. The Proctor resident died Thurs., Dec. 27, 2001 in Phoenix, Ariz., while visiting her daughter. She was 69.

She was born Jan. 18, 1932, in Duluth to Charles and Ingrid (Johnsen) Larsen. Charlene attended Proctor schools and then worked at Walgreen’s and as a long distance operator for Bell Telephone Co. She then joined the Army (WAC) and was a sergeant in recruiting, stationed in Chicago, Galesburg and Rock Island, Ill. Charlene then worked for Mi-Pa-Nora Lamp Co. and John Aimes Law Firm, both in Rock Island, and she was a bailiff at the Rock Island County Courthouse. She returned to Duluth in 1974 and opened Charlene’s Shades, a lamp shade store in Proctor. She then worked for Northern Drug from 1976 until retirement in 1994. Charlene was a member of Teamsters Union Local 346 and Teamsters Retiree Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister Corinne Larsen.

Survivors include a daughter Colleen White of Phoenix, a son Michael P. White of Proctor, sisters Dorothy Parker and Betty Miller, both of Proctor, brothers Raymond (Barb) Larsen of Duluth and Robert (Dorothy) Larsen of Pike Lake, a granddaughter Tashina Bolen of Duluth, nieces and nephews Nora Kate Kennedy (Jim) Wood of Fulton, Ill., Michael (Darlene) Kennedy of Bettendorf, Iowa, Patrick (Linda) Kennedy of Rock Island, Bridget Kennedy (Steve) Hull of Winter Haven, Fla., Casey Kennedy of Rock Island, Cathy Larsen (Tim) Clisch of Reedsburg, Wis., Brenda Larsen (Mike) Dunaisky of Duluth, Gary (Heather) Larsen of Moorhead, Mike (Jennifer) Miller of Duluth, Brad (Julie) Miller of Proctor, Ricky Miller of Duluth, Linda Hurt (Dave) McKeever of Duluth, Laurie Hurt of Carlton, Sherri Hurt (Bob) England of Laretto, Minn., Steve (Terry) Larsen, Sandy Larsen Dunaiski and Dan (Penny) Larsen, all of Duluth, and Scott Larsen of Mahtowa, and 33 grandnieces and grandnephews.

Inurnment was in Oneota Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Duluth VFW Combined Honor Guard.

Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Marion Elmi Johnson
Pat Eilola of Proctor is mourning the death of her mother, Marion Elmi Johnson. She died Sun., Dec. 30, 2001 in Viewcrest Nursing Home. She was 91.

She was born Elmi Marianna Brosi near Fort William, Ontario. Valedictorian of the Mountain Iron High School class of 1928, she completed the Virginia Junior College teacher training program and earned a baccalaureate degree from the University of Minnesota Duluth, graduating with her daughter in 1958. Her early teaching experiences in a one-room school in Peyla and the elementary school in Wrenshall ended with her marriage in 1934 to Clifford Emil Johnson of Alango. After returning to teaching during World War II, she became teacher-principal first of the common school district of Munger and, until they were closed, of St. Louis County schools in Alango and Bear River. She retired as a junior high school teacher in Cook. Honored as a St. Louis County Teacher of the Year, she worked actively for her profession and her community, serving on boards for the MEA Journal, for the County Teacher’s Union and for the Alango Unitarian Church. A novel, “A Finntown of the Heart”, published in July 1998 by North Star Press of St. Cloud, Minn., took root in her reminiscences of life on the Iron Range during the past century’s teens and the 1920’s.

She is also survived by a granddaughter Mary (Chuck) Kimball of Duluth, great-grandchildren Katy, Erick, Kelsey and Emma, a niece Phyllis Niemi Boudreau, and a foster daughter Connie Arnold Korhonen.

Her ashes rest at Alango Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Ernest V. Joki, Ellen Iverson of Saginaw is saddened by the death of her brother, Ernest V. Joki. The Cloquet resident died Mon., Dec. 31 in a Duluth hospital. He was 74.

He was a World War II Army veteran. He moved to Cloquet in 1953 and was a mail carrier for the Postal Service.

Ernie is also survived by his wife Rosella, three daughters, two brothers, three grandchildren, and three step-grandchildren.

Interment was in New Calvary Cemetery, Cloquet.

Ruth J. Peterson
Ruth J. Peterson of Proctor, who worked as a Missabe Miss on the DM&IR during World War II, died Fri., Jan. 4, 2002 in a Duluth Hospice. She was 92.

She was born March 2, 1909, in a log cabin in Split Rock, Minn., to Irving and Mary Bisland Kinkead. She was united in Marriage to Carl T. Peterson. They were married for 55 years. She worked as a telephone operator in Duluth and had also worked for the Duluth Missabe and Iron Range Railway during World War II as a laborer.

Ruth taught Sunday school and was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Proctor.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a brother Budd Kinkead, and daughters Betty Trottier and June Mary Grohsman.

Survivors include her son Robert C. (Betty) Peterson of Cloquet, a daughter Barbara J. (Jalmer) Granholm of Esko, 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Private burial was at Park Hill Cemetery, Duluth.

Harvey Henry Hennen
Michael Hennen of Saginaw is mourning the death of his father, Harvey Henry Hennen. The Sturgeon Lake resident died Fri., Jan 4, 2002 in Moose Lake. He was 69.

He was born in Bruno, Minn. In 1938, he moved to the farm that he had been farming in Windemere Township. Harvey attended school in Windemere Township and Willow River. He was a veteran of the Army. On Nov. 26, 1960, Harvey married Janice Peterson in Minneapolis. Harvey owned and operated Hennen Construction. He also continued beef farming throughout the years.

Harvey was a member of the Moose Lake United Methodist Church.

Survivors also include his wife of 41 years Janice, two other sons, two grandsons, three sisters, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Burial was in Blomskog Cemetery in Windemere Township.

Margaret M. Gilliam
Services were held earlier in the week for Margaret M. Gilliam of Proctor. She died Thurs., Jan. 10, 2002 in a Duluth hospital. She was 80.

The former Ely Lake resident was born in Gilbert, she graduated from Gilbert High School in 1939. She was editor of the high school paper, winning a state journalism award, and was on the high school girls swim team, a thespian and honor student. Margaret attended and graduated from the St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing in Rochester. She was a Navy veteran, having served as a registered nurse at the Great Lakes Naval Hospital in Illinois. Margaret married E.E. “Gil” Gilliam in 1946 in Great Lakes, Ill. Margaret had been employed as an R.N. at the Eveleth Hospital, the Virginia Hospital and the Care Unit, and volunteered at the Virginia Free Clinic. She was a former member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Eveleth, was a prolific writer of poetry, creative in her writing of journals and was an accomplished seamstress.

Margaret is survived by a daughter Jeanne Wherley of Columbus, Ohio, sons Thomas of Duluth, Joseph and Timothy of Hinckley, Peter of Woodbury, and John of Houston, Texas, 11 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, a brother Patrick (Gert) Hogan of Gilbert, and sisters Theresa Ocepek of Gilbert and Kathleen Magyar of Cottage Grove, Minn.

Burial was in Gilbert Cemetery.

Cora Ann Cayemberg
Cora Ann Cayemberg lost her battle with leukemia Thurs., Jan. 17, 2002. She died in her Vinland St. home at the age of 13.

Cora was born December 8, 1988 in Duluth to Edward and Martina (Dodge) Cayemberg. She was in the 7th grade at Proctor Junior High. Cora was a member of St. Rose Church and she loved to camp, fish, ski, play volleyball, travel, sing and dance.

She is survived by her parents Martina and Edward, her brother Casey, all at home, her grandparents Jan and Vince Dodge of Saginaw, and Nancy and Ray Cayemberg of Duluth and her great grandfather John Meining of Duluth. Cora also has tons of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Burial was at Oneota Cemetery. Memorials preferred to the Leukemia Society of America.

Joyce Louise Herendeen
Services will be held today for Joyce Louise Herendeen. Herendeen, who was born in Proctor and was the 1944 Proctor High School valedictorian, died Fri., Jan. 18, 2002 in her Hermantown home. She was 75.

She was born on Jan. 23, 1926 in Proctor to Roy and Allie (Meyers) Bennett. She was a Hermantown resident for most of her life. Joyce lettered in tennis and band. She attended the Univ. of Minn., St. Paul, majoring in chemistry and math. She was a homemaker. She married Emory Cooper Herendeen on Aug. 30, 1947 in Proctor. She was a member of Salem Lutheran Church and had sung in its choir, Euclid Chapter Order of Eastern Star and was a 50-year member of the Northern Pine Girl Scouts Council. Joyce enjoyed camping, fishing and traveling.

Survivors include a daughter Sally (Robert) McCracken of Sand Lake, N.Y., son Jeff Herendeen, Sr. of Duluth, grandchildren Josiah, Joanna and Ben Allen and Jeff Herendeen, Jr., brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law William and Lorraine Herendeen of Springfield, Virg., James and MaryAnn Herendeen of Casa Grande, Ariz., Helen and Tony Staniger of Chisholm, and MaryAnn and Joseph Rapolz of Ashland, Wisc.

Visitation will be from noon until the 1 p.m. service Thurs. in Salem Lutheran Church, 4715 Hermantown Road. Rev. Richard C. Hane officiating. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Roger Gene Kratt
Area family and friends are saddened by the death of Roger Gene Kratt. He died Sun., Dec. 16, 2001 in his Duluth residence. He was 66.

He was a lifelong Duluth resident and a U.S. Air Force veteran. He was a retired electrician and was a member of the IBEW.

He was preceded in death by his father Reinhold.

Roger is survived by two sons, Brett Kratt of Proctor and Burton Kratt of Saginaw, his mother Ida Johnson of Hermantown, a sister Margaret (Robert) Kanuit of Duluth, a brother Wayne (Nancy) Kratt of Saginaw, grandsons Ryan and Kyle, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Ora Isabell Rudolph
Private services are slated for Ora Isabell Rudolph. The Hillside Gardens resident died Sat., Jan. 19, 2002 in Nopeming Care Center. She was 91.

The former Hermantown resident was born in Leyden, N.D. Ora moved to Duluth in 1942. She married Harry Rudolph on Jan. 1, 1937 in N.D. Ora lived in Hermantown for 50 years.

Surviving are two sons Calvin (Diana) of Hermantown and Russell J. (JoAnn) of North Kingstown, R.I., a daughter Donna (James) Armstrong of Esko, eight grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

Burial was in Sunrise Memorial Park.

Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.
