Melvin Nelson, 75, of 2526 S. Bridge St., New Ulm, died Friday, April 16, 2004 at the New Ulm Medical Center. Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday at Schmucker Funeral Service in New Ulm with Rev. Todd Nelsen officiating. Burial will take place at a later date. Visitation will be one hour prior to service at the funeral home.
Melvin Bernard Nelson, the son of Adolph and Rose (Kuchynka) Nelson, was born June 11, 1928 at Mahnoman, MN where he attended school. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1943, moving to the twin cities upon his discharge.
Mel married Barbara Curry March 27, 1953 in St. James. They made their home in various communities before settling in New Ulm in 1973. Mel worked for New Ulm Monument for over twenty-five years. He was also known as a faithful employee and friend to Jeff Gulden at the former Texaco Super Stop & Wash and the B & L Bar. He was an avid hunter and fisherman who also enjoyed camping and dearly loved time spent with his family. Mel was a member of American Legion Post #132.
Survivors include his wife Barbara of New Ulm; son, Timothy Nelson and his fiancee Deb Utz of New Ulm; daughter, Mona Vogel and her husband Don of Waterville; grandchildren, Amy Rehbine and her husband Mark of Minnetonka and Nicole Nelson of New Ulm; great grandchildren, Cole and Blake Rehbine; mother, Rose Nelson of Minneapolis; brothers, Lloyd Nelson and his wife Barb of Bloomington, Harvey Nelson and his wife Adeline of Lino Lakes; sister Sandra Hubbard of Bloomington; mother-in-law, Hilde Curry of St. James; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his father, Mel was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey Nelson; grandsons, Adam Vogel and Justin Nelson; and brother, Vernie Nelson.
Memorials are preferred.

Sister Regina, O.S.F. 67, passed away peacefully at St. Mary's Home on April 15, 2004. Survived by her community, the Franciscan Sisters of St. Paul; sisters, Marlys (Dennis) Schumacher, Alverna (Louis) Dahlheimer, Lois (Bruce) Holmboe; and brothers, Bernard (Tress) Vonderharr, Ronald (Diane) Vonderharr, LeRoy (Bernie) Vonderharr, Eugene (Sheila) Vonderharr, Fred Vonderharr; and nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Sunday, April 18, 2004 from 4 - 8 p.m. at St. Therese Catholic Church. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the time of service at the church. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, April 19 at St. Therese Catholic Church, 1850 Mississippi River Blvd., St. Paul. Memorials are preferred to the Franciscan Sisters of St. Paul, Francis Basket Ministry, Highland Catholic Community, or St. Mary's Home/Hospice. Minnesota Valley Funeral home of New Ulm is in charge of local notification.

Robert 'Bob' John Appel, 68, of Sleepy Eye, Minn., died on Friday, April 16, 2004, at Sleepy Eye Municipal Hospital
Service is 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 20, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye. The clergy will be Fr. Brian Oestreich. Interment will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery with military rites by the Sleepy Eye Honor Guard.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m., Monday, and 7:30-9:30 a.m., Tuesday at Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye. There will be a rosary at 4 p.m. and a parish prayer service at 7 p.m., Monday at the funeral home.
The family prefers memorials given to the donor's choice.
Robert John Appel was born on July 27, 1935, in Buffalo, Minn., to Guido and Frieda (Kotten) Appel. Shortly after the family moved to Sleepy Eye. Robert attended Sleepy Eye St. Mary's Grade and High Schools, graduating in 1953. He entered the United States Army in 1954, served in the Corps of Engineers as a heavy equipment operator and was discharged in 1956. Robert married Florence Faerber on Oct. 10, 1959, at St. Mary's Church in New Ulm. Bob worked at Roman Weiss Construction, Montgomery Ward in New Ulm and Hose Hardware. In 1972, Bob and his wife Florence started Captain Clean Services and continued until his retirement in 1997. Bob was a member of St. Mary's Church. He was also a member of Turner Hall in New Ulm and a member of the Board of directors. He was a past member of the Servicemen's Club. Bob enjoyed carpentry and woodworking, golfing, hunting and fishing and playing sheephead, poker and other card games with very dear and cherished friends.
He is survived by his wife, Florence Appel of Sleepy Eye; son, Stephen and wife Karen Appel of New Ulm; grandchildren, Riley Matthew and Emily Elizabeth; brothers, Leon and wife Victoria Appel of Phoenix, Ariz., Duane Appel of Kallispell, Mont.; sisters, Virginia and husband Bud Gedney of Bradford, Vt. and Darleen Carroll of Sleepy Eye.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Rebecca Elizabeth and his dear parents.

George Robertson and Joyce Robertson SLEEPY EYE -- George Robertson, 80, and Joyce Robertson, 76, of rural Sleepy Eye, died Friday, April 16, 2004, in an auto accident near Sleepy Eye.
Visitation will be at the Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye on Wednesday, April 21 from 4-7 p.m., concluding with a prayer service at 7 p.m.
Private family burial services will be held on Thursday at Hillside Cemetery in Minneapolis.
Arrangements with the Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye.

Joseph L. Mattes, 83, formerly of North Mankato, died Friday, April 16, 2004, at his home in Alvin, Texas.
Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 21, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, North Mankato, with burial in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Mankato Mortuary with a 7 p.m. prayer service; and continues one hour before services at church.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Mattes of Alvin, Texas; sons, Gene Mattes of Alvin, Texas, Bill Mattes of North Mankato; daughters, Kathy Wass of St. Peter, Sharon Stoffregen of North Mankato; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was born April 30, 1920, in rural St. George, Minn., to Joseph and Clara (Dorn) Mattes.

Grace L. Volker, 83, of Sleepy Eye, Minn., died on Saturday, April 17, 2004, at Season's Hospice in Redwood Falls.
Service is 10 a.m., Wednesday, April 21, at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye. The Clergy will be Rev. Bruce J. Naumann.
Interment will be in the Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye
Visitation is 5-8 p.m., Tuesday, at Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye, and continues one hour before the service Wednesday at the church.
The family prefers memorials to the American Cancer Society.
Grace was born on June 7, 1920, in Mallard, Iowa, the daughter of Theo (Stowell) and Frank Schwint. She moved with her family to Sleepy Eye where she grew up and graduated from Sleepy Eye Public High School. She married William Volker on June 10, 1939, in Iowa, the couple made their home in Sleepy Eye. Grace worked as a clerk for the city of Sleepy Eye, as a clerk at the Palace Clothing Store and as secretary at Sleepy Eye Grain and Feed. Grace was an active member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye. She enjoyed reading, word puzzles, donating blood, spending time with her grandchildren and especially having coffee with her friends.
Survivors include, son, Paul and wife Jeanne Volker of Sleepy Eye; six grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Marge and husband Ivan Sandmann of Sleepy Eye and Fran Feig of Willmar; brother, Robert and wife Violet Schwint of Springfield; sisters-in-law, Esther Teschendorf of Fargo; Alice Christensen of Sleepy Eye, Rose Horton of Sleepy Eye and Florence Haas of Rochelle, Ill.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, William in 2003 and sister, Hazel Ebelsisor.

Viola Fredrickson, 85, of Lafayette (Bernadotte), MN, passed away on Sunday, April 18, 2004, at the New Ulm Medical Center in New Ulm, Minn.
Funeral services will be on Wednesday, April 21, at 2 p.m. at the Bernadotte Lutheran Church in Bernadotte Township, Nicollet County. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation is noon to 2 p.m., Wednesday at at Bernadotte Lutheran Church.
Arrangements are being handled by Dalin-Hantge Funeral Chapel in Winthrop.
Viola (Wagner) Fredrickson, was born March 14, 1919, in Brownton, Minn. She was the daughter of Bill and Lena (Schauer) Wagner. She was baptized as an infant and later was confirmed in her faith, as a youth.
On September 20, 1941, Viola was united in marriage to Harris Fredrickson at the Zion Lutheran Church in Winthrop. This marriage was blessed with one child. Viola and Harris farmed and made their home in Alfsborg Township, Sibley County. The couple shared 62 years of marriage together.
Viola was a member of the Bernadotte Lutheran Church and was active with the Lades Aid. She loved spending time with her family and enjoyed knitting.
Viola is survived by her husband, Harris Frederickson of Lafayette; daughter, Diane Dietl and her husband, Ron of Crystal, ; grandson, Mike Dietl and his wife, LeAnn of Zimmerman; great-grandchildren, Travis, Jaclyn, Jenna and Christopher; sisters, Esther Huffman of New Ulm, and Orlene Uecker and husband, Ralph of Hutchinson, MN; five nieces and five nephews; other relatives and friends.
Viola is preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Lena Wagner; brothers,Walter in 1913 and Marvin in 2000; grandson, Tim Dietl and four brothers-in-law.
Blessed be her memory.

Clifford 'Bull' Pfeiffer, 74, of 400 North Franklin, New Ulm, died Friday, April 16, 2004, at his home.
Funeral Services will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, April 21, at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm with burial in the New Ulm City Cemetery.
Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Tuesday and 7:30-10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Clifford is survived by his aunt and uncle, Victoria and Ken Earl of New Ulm; and by seven cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and by a cousin, Scott Earl.
Clifford was born on October 11, 1929, in New Ulm to Clifford and Edna (Brey) Pfeiffer. He graduated from New Ulm Public Schools. He was employed at Schell's Brewery for a number of years and was a member of Turner Hall since 1954. Bull was an avid hunter, sports fan, and had played softball for the New Ulm Greenhouse at one time.

George S. Robertson, 80, of Sleepy Eye, died Friday, April 16, 2004, as the result of an automobile accident in rural Sleepy Eye.
Visitation is 4-7 p.m., Wednesday, at the Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye.
There will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye. Burial will be in he Hillside Cemetery in Minneapolis.
He is survived by his sons, Larry of Bloomington and Bruce of Annandale, Virginia; and two grandchildren.
He was born Nov. 29, 1923, in New Ulm, to Charles and Nellie (Hanson) Robertson.

Joyce (Cook) Robertson, 76,of Sleepy Eye, died Friday, April 16, 2004, as the result of an automobile accident near Sleepy Eye.
Visitation is 4-7 p.m., Wednesday at the Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye. There will be a prayer service at 7 p.m.Wednesday at the Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye.
Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery in Minneapolis.
Joyce is survived by her sons, Larry of Bloomington, and Bruce of Annandale, Virginia; two grandchildren; and sister, Bonnie Nordby of Bloomington.
Joyce was born August 10, 1927, in Minneapolis, to John and Viola (Tiden) Cook.

Marvin 'Barney' Christle, 75, of Carlsbad, Calif., a former resident of New Ulm, died Thursday, April 15, 2004, at Scripps Memorial Hospital in Encinitas, Calif.
The Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Carlsbad, and burial will be at the Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, Calif.
He is survived by his wife, Lorraine Niehoff Christle of Carlsbad; daughters, Sharon Faust, of Apple Valley, Deborah Taylor, of Carlsbad and Audrey Miller of West Covina; son Randy Christle of Seward, Alaska; five grandchildren; two great-grand children; brother Merritt Christle; and sisters, Marianne Budan and Leatha Hanson.
He was born Dec. 28, 1928 in Lisbon, N.D., to Ed and Anna Christle.
